Has anyone successfully completed Odin One-Click on a Mac using a VM? Odin can see the COM port just fine before I complete the battery/sim/downloader ritual. No problem getting into download mode - but I am unable to make the USB connection as before. I'm stumped.
Same boat (using Parallels).
I had to revert back to my 7yr old Sony Vaio to do it. Couldn't get Odin to recognize the device.
Try using virtualbox works great on linux hosts, should be fine on Mac as well.
I had to partition my hard drive and use boot camp to get ODIN to work on my mac. That's about the only way I got it to work. I tried Parallels and got the same as you couldn't get it working.
Odin won't work in a VM. I ran into this same problem flashing firmware on the Moment as well. I think it sucks that there isn't a Mac version.
has anyone gotten odin to work on a mac yet?
Yes! i got it to work tonight (on my i9000). I couldn't find anything confirming it working on either phone, so i thought i would just try it out myself.
Using Parallels 5 on OS X 10.5, just make sure you get the windows drivers for the phone, ODIN will recognize.
Sorry for rezzing this thread, but i wanted to let people know it will work through parallels.
lol might want to explain " drivers " to the mac guys
hahaha
Are you using parallels? I've had trouble with parallels and getting the usb connection through from the mac hardware into windows. I've found a way to get it to work:
1. Connect the phone while booted normally, USB debugging on.
2. Use the version of odin in the AIO captivate tool. Opening odin here will automatically put the phone into download mode. I suspect that this is the same as giving the phone an adb download command from command line in the PC, but I haven't bothered to install the android sdk in windows to find out.
3. For some reason, telling the phone to reboot to download mode from windows makes it stay connected. You can now use odin.
Downside to this method: it doesn't work if your phone can't boot.
I've actually had occasional luck getting it to connect while forcing the phone to boot straight into download mode with the buttons on the phone. This seems to be a bug in parallels and/or the usb drivers in mac os.

Yep still sucks.
Bootcamp FTW!
Get it on Bootcamp.
Logically speaking, Vmware or Parallels runs on a main OS (OSX).
So an OS over an OS, the drivers won't recognize coz your main OS already did.
Just partition the HDD to a minimum (20gb) run that Bootcamp.
I got mine working btw.
(Win 7 Ultimate Bootcamp on Mac OSX Lion MacBook Pro late 2010.)
Peace out!
i just used odin on my mac (lion os x)using parallel with windows xp home edition. when you plug in the phone, even in download mode, it asks if you wanna connect it to your mac or the VM. the weird thing is, it didnt work on my old captivate, but it works on my refurbished one i got a few days ago. i think it might be because i was running cm7 on my old one, and samsung froyo on the new one. but yes, as m0ngstr0us said, boot camp is always another option.
Succesful Flash w/ Parallels and SGS3
I know this isn't in the correct forum (Using a Verizon SGS3), but I wanted to post confirmation that this does indeed work. Your mileage may vary, but if the SGS3 can work, I'm assuming this applies for older Samsung devices as well:
Successfully ODIN'ed a new recovery IMG on Windows 7 (in conjunction with Parallels 6 for Mac OS X 10.6.8)
Used a random Windows 7 iso I had lying around. This was a brand new Windows installation, and no out-of-the-box modifications were made to OS X, Windows, or Parallels (except for downloading/installing the Samsung USB drivers, as suggested in a previous post).
My SGS3 was actually soft-bricked (Could not boot into recovery OR download mode.. Holding the power button would greet me with a "Could not do normal mode. Booting into Odin Mode" error)
Turned phone on (auto-booted into ODIN mode), plugged it into the Mac via USB, and was greeted by a dialog noting that a USB device was detected. It asked if I wanted to access the USB device via Mac or Windows 7. Chose Windows 7, and Odin was able to connect to it flawlessly.
If there are any questions, please let me know. I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to find a solution (I'm on vacation in Germany and for some reason Windows PC's are avoided like the plague) and didn't want to go through the trouble of using Parallels unless it was confirmed working. For others in the same boat as me, let this be your confirmation. It works!!!

I did almost the same thing but using Windows XP via Parallels.
I had bricked my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 trying to install JellyWiz RLS12 without first unlocking the bootloader.
So I used the guide found at below link to walk me through using Odin for the first time. My timing was very good as official 4.1.1 leak had just surfaced and the guide included a link to it. I unbricked with that and my phone is running as smooth as ever (and i love JB!)
HOWEVER - USB not recognized on my Mac. Android File Transfer also does not recognize the phone. And FoxFi of course isn't working, hoping for a workaround :/
Also, my phone appears to be "stock" and is not rooted. Not sure how to root now but i'm sure there are a million similar threads i can search on.
GUIDE i followed to successfully unbrick!
EDIT: I got wifi tethering working on non-root JB for Verizon Gs3 by using pda + foxfi combo.
Worked!
I did it on Parallels 10.1.1!
Thanks everyone.
My steps:
Downloaded and installed Samsung USB Drivers for Windows on Windows 7 VM (google developer samsung usb driver)
Rebooted my VM
Turned off and disconnected my phone
Opened Odin
Turn on my phone on Downloading mode
Connected USB cable
Parallels asked if I want connect the device on Mac or VM, I choosed VM.
I waited the drivers are installed automatically.
I looked at Odin and the COM was appearing.
thanks so much

Hello guys,
To cut a long story short, my cousin wants me to hack is Samsung Galaxy GT i9000.
I rooted his phone in August and it was working perfectly (I play around with my Desire quite a lot) and since then he's tried to get rid of the root to update to official Froyo and something has happened to the USB.
I have tried to install every driver known to man kind to get this phone recognised by 3 laptops and a Desktop PC. 1 XP, 1 Vista and 2 Windows 7. I have been using USB Debug Mode, I've tried it without Debug mode, I've tried every USB slot, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, kies, even deleted the phone from Device Manager and retried that... and nothing has happened. I can also get in to Download mode but unfortunately the computer still doesn't recognise the USB so therefore I cannot use Odin to flash the phone.
Any help? Cheers

Tried all that already mate, but I tried again just in case, and nope.. No avail whatsoever. This is majorly frustrating now.
I can access Android Recovery (eventhough originally Clockworkmod was on there, but my cousin has done some strange things to this phone) so I think if I can find a verified signed update.zip, I can install something through that no problem, via the Internal SD Card + "apply: update.zip"?
Oh and another thing, when I put the USB Cable in to the Computer and in to the SGS, the option for Charging, Mass Storage, Tethering etc doesn't come up..
Any light whatsoever?

Try Odin 1 Click. You'll find it on here somewhere. It wil take you back to stock 2.1 Eclair. Then you can READ ABOUT flashing other ROMs and proceed from there.

im sorry but most of us can't even help you IF we want to The users of windows based PC's are greater in this forums compared to Macs. if there is drivers for mac, are they installed?
Since you only have a Mac, I would suggest installing Windows through Boot-Camp (included in Mac OSX) on a different partition. I read Galaxy S doesn't have drivers support for Mac OSX Leopart or later, not entirely sure if its true though, but I do have a MacBook Pro and had no success in finding a way to connect my phone to it by USB... Good thing I had a regular old Windows PC Desktop.
Then as Jack Man said, use Odin 1-Click found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
to reset your phone completely to factory settings, relatively simple to do as long as you read the instructions on that post. =)
Well since you only have a Mac and hiemidal is not see your phone i think your only option is to find a friend with a PC and give the Odin 1 click a try.

Sir, just in case, did you reboot after installing drivers and BEFORE you tried connecting the device? Also, did you check if Odin detected your device when its connected in Download mode?
yes, and thats what in trying to do, to get odin to detect my phone in download mode...
Ok, is your phone detected by the operating system? If it does, then try using this other Odin thread instead, this one however will restore it to Stock Samsung Galaxy with 2.3 Gingerbread.

Don't have to follow the rest of the instructions to root it just in case, but see if that version of Odin detects your phone.
actually thats the problem... windows vista doesnt recognize my device, either my mac... is there a solution to my phone or not? please help

Windows does not recognize it.
Are you sure it goes in to Download Mode (little android with a shovel)? Also have u tried different usb ports?
Like the above said, are you sure you are in download mode?
What USB port are you using if ots a desktop computer. There are known issues using front usb, plug into the usb on the back of the tower.
Also, are you sure odin doesnt see it? I know windows doesnt like it, but start odin, put phone in download mode, connect to pc. What does odin show? Any connected devices?

Hi All,
here is the story, I was on MilkyS GB rom, made a ndriod backup, then flashed dark knight 2.1 then wiped , flashed DK3 w/ Semaphone. Today, I was going to flash stock JVU via Odin but while I was charging up the phone I already noticed Windows was showing error saying something like ' USB device is malfunction cannot install' , so I thought that must be a DK3 bug for not able to access to the SD card, so I did not care.
Went ahead and tried to flash Odin, sure enough Odin did not detect my phone, so did Google and found 'Gnex USB drivers' which by the way took forever to install, while waiting , I thought I might as well just go back to MilkyS GB by using the backup I have done before, so I went in recovery tried to restore, but not successful, so I went ahead and choose reboot....now I am stuck at the boot screen, pull battery, I can go into download mode , however, Odin cannot detect the phone so I still can NOT flash anything.... (just now tried all kinds of drivers I can find, CM7 USB driver, Google usb_driver_r04-windows, even installed the drivers within Andriod SDK, still can't detect the phone..)
Any suggestions ? am I out of luck ? by the way, tried installing drivers in 3 x different laptops and with different USB port on them...
Have you tried a different USB cable? Also ensure KIES is not running & that there are no KIES processes running in the background. Make sure no other usb devices connected to the pc. I've also heard Windows 7 64bit can be the issue sometime but not sure so maybe try a windows xp pc.
Also try disabling any antivirus/firewall on the pc. I had this is issue but for me restarting pc and using a different USB port did the trick.
Should you figure out the USB issue you can't actually restore a Gingerbread backup from ICS.
You will need to get a stock rom (darky resurection should also work) and flash with ODIN. You will need a 3 file stock rom (pda, phone, csc) & 512 pit file.
From here you will need to select all files into relevant places, check repartion and run ODIN. Sometimes I've also needed to flash a second time with just the 3 files and repartition unchecked.

thanks scubadude for your reply. Yes, tried 2 x cables, 3 x laptops and all the USB ports on the laptops, now trying on a clean XP , AV disabled PC still no go.
I know the Odin 3 file process and so on and I kind of know that I can't flash GB on top of ICS that is why I attempt to flash stock in Odin but I guess I was just impatient to wait for the stupid Samsung driver to be installed and made a stupid mistake...

I guess you have tried going back in recovery mode using the 3-button combo but that is also not working?
Odin isn't recognizing your phone but does windows recognize it? If you uninstall all samsung drivers and then try to connect your phone to PC does it ask for installation of drivers? .. if it doesn't that means your phone's usb could have become faulty.. (just speculating)
Or you can try to use Heimdall instead of Odin.. maybe that'll work for you..

Try using Heimdall for mac or linux. It does the same as Odin with no drivers.
Also try cleaning the contacts in usb port on the phone with a small brush(this worked for me when I had similar problems).

Try using Heimdall for linux. The windows version depends on drivers while the linux does not need drivers.
Also try turning USB-debugging on. Some people report that this is needed for download mode, though I don't see how this can make a difference as the OS is not loaded when using download mode.
If this doesn't work I think you have a hardware problem.
EDIT: Don't use WM-ware etc for the above. I think an Ubuntu live CD will be fine.

CAPTIVATE - Frozen on AT&T Boot, Unrecognized via USB, NO access to CWM - PLEASE HELP
HI - I've been fighting this captivate for over 48 hours. Being very familiar with all this, and not doing this for the first time either, the fact that I can't get this resolved drives me insane as I have never been so mentally exhausted in being incapable of resolving a problem, thus seeking professional guidance from the Gods on mobile technology!
HERE IS THE SPIEL:
Device: Samsung Captivate i897 (Device is rooted)
Software: AOKP build.38
Kernel: IcyGlitch v14
CWM: Installed v.5-----
The Problem
Device stuck at AT&T Logo - Not Looping (just stuck)
Windows XP Professional SP3 (x86) with all recommended USB drivers will not detect device. Device Manager displays the phone as unknown, regardless of drivers & upon inputting it into a USB (2.0) windows displays a message "USB Device is not recognized".
Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) brings up identical message as that of Windows XP with all proper & recommended drivers with the phone recognized as "unknown"
Device boots into download mode via holding Vol.+/- and plugin in USB cable. Both Heimdall & Odin can't recognized the device when it's in UNKNOWN state by windows. Although all drivers are installed.
Purchased new Micro USB cable - NOTHING - that's testing all USB ports on all my systems.
The Story:
The device was working flawlessly being able to mount as mass storage on both my Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) & Windows XP Professional SP3 (x86) until i've upgraded to AOKP build #38. The upgrade was successful (2 months ago). 2 days ago, i decided to upgrade to AOKP build #40. The device was not recognized as mass storage but rather "Unknown Device" or "USB Device not Recognized" - although the phone was in full working condition (USB Debugging was enabled). After some reading, I realized that the AOKP build #38 has a bug where there was a problem with mounting & the camera was not functioning since it had no access to external_sd (a problem that was very irritating since the update, but i had no time to look into it until recently). I followed a similar tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1545801) which required the editing of the vold.fstab file with Root Explorer, resolving the issue of external_sd becoming accessible on the phone with camera working, however unable to mount and copy the new AOKP Build 40 ROM through Windows to flash via CWM.
At this point I booted into CWM via holding volume +/- & power button. Wiped everything, and loaded a backup I've done a # of months ago where everything was working perfectly. There was an error when it was "...loading data image" which is normal, so I did it again and the error persisted. On the second attempt, it again re-sent me primary CWM menu where i was intending to now load another backup. I accidentally clicked the restart button, having already cleaned the devlick cache, etc, including user data which brought me this NIGHTMARE of problems.
I will be forever grateful the the kind soul which will help me resolve this, as I am at a phase of taking this samsung captivate and throwing it against a wall.
I assume you can still access recovery? Try putting CM9 on the external SD with a card reader, and flashing that...
EDIT: Just saw you can't access CWM... Try recovery again... all three until ATT comes up, immediately let off power... Try multiple times... Leave the battery out, hold all three, have someone else insert it, and let off power at ATT... When going into download mode, leave the battery out, hook it up, hold boths vols, and insert the battery...
The Unknown device issue....
Uninstall your drivers... Here are drivers to manually install, they are 64bit... so try right clicking the Unknown device in device manager and doing a manual driver update...
OP,
See this thread... Captivate Connection Issues...

B-Naughty: Thank you. I have tried this & that no luck. Even loaded Linux Mint 13, however heimdall is being a !*&#@ in loading the firmware...Perhaps if you would know any (proper) packages for a Samsung Captivate i897 via heimdall id be grateful. I used heimdall-suite-1.3.2 command line & frontend. Will try again tomorrow. Although still haven't figured out whether or not it read the phone in Linux (it's a different world for me)
4-2ndtwin: My friend, thank you for the detailed link. I have been doing this for over 48 hours ... nothing. I'll give it another shot via Linux, if not i'll try Ubuntu. Truly am just confused out of my mind, never had this before.
PS: The phone's data is wiped & it's stuck at AT&T when loaded via power button. Booting into DOWNLOAD MODE isn't a problem. All combination to load into recovery, did not work. I mean...there must be a way! There always is...Any further ideas or should i simply through it out and buy a Galaxy SIII?

And try all of your USB cords, I don't know what you bought, but a bad one, or a lot of times an aftermarket one won't work...
Edit:
I saw you can get into download mode. So my original post doesn't help much.
Have you tried installing the Andoid SDK and downloading the nexus drivers from there? Perhaps your device now thinks it is a nexus. It might be worth a shot.

Thank you all for the support.
At this point I've installed SDK Manager w/Google USB revision 6, latest Java, all proper drivers...nothing. Tried all usbs on all systems.
Q: If the phone goes into download mode, is it not in a default state and must be detected? I have a samsung galaxy tab 10.1, detects immediately. Samsung YPS3 mp3 player detects immediately - Samsung Captivate however, nothing...
I set up a clean Windows 7 Ultimate x64bit (all june 2012 updates + .Net 4.0). Installed all usb drivers...same thing, UNKNOWN DEVICE - so the usb cable works...but now when you go and manually upgrade driver via device manager, it says that the best driver for the unknown device is already installed.
Anyone want's a free captivate lol...
At this point...I dont even know what to ask...since i've tried everything. I'll try to revisit Ubuntu & Linux later this evenings and report status!
Thanks for the I897UCKK4 Stock, Wipe, with option to install Bootloaders, Param, and Repartition-Heimdall One-Click link, i can't use it since the phone isn't detected by the application
I would say you need to uninstall any/all drivers for your captivate. This includes heimdall installed drivers. Make sure to uninstall the drivers for the "unknown" device also.

Seems as though you have a hardware problem with the phone, or a s/w problem so messed up you're down to Unbrickable Mod

I would say you need to uninstall any/all drivers for your captivate. This includes heimdall installed drivers. Make sure to uninstall the drivers for the "unknown" device also.

He had a fresh Windows install and install drivers...
Unbrickable MOD - wont be able to do this my self, would need an electric to look into it. I mean the phone isn't bricked, it accesses download mode i just have to get it to connect via usb to be read as a "samsung composite device" to flash the bootloader. As now, it would be stuck at the AT&T screen without giving access to CWM.
I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 - set up java 7 - loaded Heimdall One-Click stock rom provided above via java...tried all USB's phone not detected via DOWNLOAD MODE. Phone not detected at all!
This is just insane...If it's in DOWNLOAD MODE, it should be accessible, not the contrary. Ubuntu doesn't need usb drivers, should be plug&play...Both XP & Win7Ultimate at least recognized the phone as an unknown device. On Ubuntu it does nothing at all, as if it never was plugged in.
The microusb slot on the phone is not damaged / cable is stock, also have another one from Staples. The system w/XP is reading all devices on a plug&play basis and read the captivate before flawlessly. Same applies to the Asus P43 laptop, which read the device without hesitation on Win7 Ultimate x64. The Ubuntu is now on the laptop...tried connecting the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (Samsung) it recognized it immediately...with full access to files etc.
Last plea for Ideas...before i'll send this captivate to hell, to where the journey isn't captivating at all!
It sounds like you have a bad flash. You need jtag to fix this issue. Contact mobiletechvideos and Josh should be able to repair it for you. I think at this point you've tried every other option.

did u try reverting back to stock using ODIN 1 Click Stock Firmware Installer? there's a tutorial on youtube by mobiletechvideos original post by connexion2005.
Samsung Captivate (ODIN 1 Click Stock Firmware Installer)
youtube.com/watch?v=UDtxnH4lFuk
I would like to have that free captivate thou :good:
Same Problem
i have the same prob and if i try to recovery mode (i.e. by pressing volume buttons and power button simultaneously)
i get following type of errors
"E:failed to mount /cache (Invalid argument)
E:Can't mount/cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log
E:copy_kernel_file :: Can't open /cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log"
kindly sugeest some way out
I have done everything possible to get it connected and recognized by the PC & all is failing. I have tried to "manually" install the Samsung composite Device driver via "have disk method in Device Manager.
In XP:
I load device manager and than do the following:
Click Universal Serial Bus Controllers
Right click "unknown device" which is the captivate
Select Update Driver
Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)
Select Don't Search. I will choose the driver to install. (Click Next)
Select "Have Disk" with the (show compatible devices) checked
Browse to the directory of extracted 32bit Windows XP Drivers: SGH-i897_Captivate_USB_Drivers_5_02_0_2
Select "ssadadb2.inf" & click open
And than i get the msg saying:The specified location does not contain information about your hardware
...WTF... I mean really...
Windows 7 Ultimate:
Same procedure as above until you select have disk, pick a proper x64 driver provided by XDA - also tried the Universal_Naked_Driver_Beta_0.6 ...there was progress that got me very excited - the Phone was detected as: Samsung Android Composite Device. Was I happy...until i clicked next and got this msg:Samsung Android USB Composite Device - This device cannot start. (Code10)...
There must be a solution: I had the phone bricked when i first tried to change from stock rom, managed to load it in download mode, and it was detected fine on all systems via USB with the same accessories, worked like a charm...so when this happened i wasn't concerned, as i thought id follow standard procedure, accept it did not work.
Anyone?
Let's try this since you seem to be stuck in a boot loop.
Code:
adb wait-for-device reboot recovery
Make sure your phone is plugged in and reboot it. If your machine recognizes the phone at any point in the boot process it will kick it into recovery.
Once there you can try to restore the backup again.
If this doesn't work, you will most likely need JTAG service. Because of the bad image flash your device might not "think" it is a Captivate any longer and that's why the drivers aren't working.
Red_81 :Thank You. Would you please be more specific & put into a 1,2,3...process?
1. Power off device
2. Plug in to computer
3. Open a command prompt
4. Navigate to adb.exe (android sdk or inside my kk4 root utility)
5. Enter command above
6. Boot up phone.
7. Hopefully go into recovery

Thank you. I've been endlessly fighting the achievement of the PC systems to detect the captivate & no results. Thank you all for you help...when i have time i'll JTAG this device, or probably not even going to bother and pick up a SGIII. By the way Red_81:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1680048 is an amazing app, if only my phone was detected as it's recognized as unknown device, so there isn't much it can do. Although i highly recommend it to anyone else whose phone is detected.
So attempting to root I can not get my tmobile note 4 to be recognized by Odin when I enter downloading mode. I obviously tried installing samsung usb mobile driver, when I did a message window in Japanese with a red x appeared on my win 8.1 desktop. I tried different downloads of driver and even tried samsung site all give same error window. I then installed latest kies and it installed ok and recognized my note. I tried Odin and entered dl mode on note and still Odin doesn't recognize device. I uninstalled and reinstalled kies and driver but no luck. Is there a setting on my phone that's not allowing. I have usb Debug checked. When in dl mode it just says secure download enabled and then says entering udc. I am adb literate but new to odin. Any suggestions ...
Delete everything and start over. My laptop automatically downloads the drivers for me so not sure if your desktop will do the same.
If not, download drivers or just reinstall then and try it out and see if that works for you.
Well my fix was to go to a friend's house and use there pc. Tried everything and my win 8.1 did not like.
Removing or reinstalling Samsung drivers can be tricky. You did the right (easy) thing going to a different computer. Trying to use the same computer for an old and new Samsung device at the same time can easily cause your problem to happen. I found that you can't just switch between different versions of the drivers willy nilly. Perhaps the uninstaller routine doesn't work? Registry issue? Don't know.
If your win 8 pc can be rolled back to before you ever installed kies or a Samsung driver you might be able to get it to work using the correct (new) driver. That said, I'm still using the same driver I installed for my Note 2. Since it worked for the Note 4 and knowing what could happen, I left well enough alone!
