disabling cellular radio - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I will be upgrading soon to either the epic or the evo. I want to keep my hero and try my hand at developing a minimalist rom geared toward using it for a pmp. I was wondering if there is a way to permenantly disable the cellular radio or is there a script that can be run at startup to disable it?

Dont pay the bill...?

The phone won't be activated. I want to turn off the radio so it doesn't use any of the battery power.

you could flash a bad PRL, but then the phone will constantly be looking for service, i just wish there was a way to put the phone in airplane mode, but still use wifi.

Just use the "OneClick Widgets" in the market.
In the airplane mode it has the option that leave wifi enable.

Edit the build prop and get rid of the default radio/provider settings. Just leave everything blank and your radio will fail to even activate.

Yeah but if it fails wont it try to restart the service till it works? Just assuming that's how android works especially since when you have low to no signal most phones kill the batt. Faster because it keeps trying to find a signal if any. Using airplane mode in my opinion would be the best bet but once again I'm just assuming how the radio's. In phones / in android work. In no way am I saying that deleting the radio files/config. Files won't work just an opposing idea/thought

I asked this question a month ago and got the same responses, sort of. The idea isn't to just stick the phone into airplane mode, but to turn it into a device like the new archos--> archosfans.com/2010/08/03/first-of-gen8-leaks-archos-32-8gb-149-android-2-2-device-3-2-400x240-screen/, kind of. You could remove the radio parts, remap the buttons, stuff like that. optimize it for music and video. Mine lasts a long time in airplane mode, but wouldn't it be cool if you didn't have to worry about it.

This weekend I had my phone on airplane mode the whole time and was able to enable and use wifi on fresh 2.3.3
I only used wifi a few times, had the phone on mostly for a clock and some daily alarms I use.
I put it in airplane mode Thursday night at 57% battery and left it on all night each night and when I got into town midday Monday, it was at 30%

App To Drastically Improve Battery Life.

Did a search and it didn't show any results about an app called Juice Defender....so here's a post about it.
Simply put it disables your apn when your phone is asleep then turns it back on when you go to use your phone.
It will really surprise how much it saves. Instead of my phone having 5% battery life left after normal usage in a 13-15 hour day, I now have 30-35% percent left.
I suggest everyone give it a try. It has customizable options and is a nice alternative for those not wanting to double the size of their g1 with an extended battery, but want more from their battery.
Just search "Juice Defender" in market or here's the link to the website: http://www.latedroid.com/2010/01/juicedefender.html
Doesnt that mean you wont receive calls or texts?

An APN is only required for 3G, so it should still be fine as EDGE/GSM would still be available. Thats the theory anyway.

Exactly I still receive all my calls and texts, and it also has a schedule so it will turn the apn on for a short time every so many minutes. Mine is scheduled for every 30mins my phone is asleep, it turns the apn on for 3 mins. This way I still recieve any updates that require a data connection, such as email or facebook.

The Access Point Name (APN) is required for GPRS/EDGE/3G. It's my job
OT
The reason why the custom ROMs have the "big apn list" is because when you use different carrier sims the APN is typically always different (except a lot of companies use "internet" for their APN). When I went to China last month my G1 automatically knew the APN for China Mobile. China Mobile doesn't have 1700mhz 3G and I used the APN appp to disable internet access so I wouldn't burn through my prepaid minutes. Very nice.
Im not sure this app works. I turned it on, left Hello AIM signed in, sent some IM's to my phone from my PC and my phone was still able to recieve the IM's in sleep mode.
something that I do is that I turn off my gps and my sync option also I only select my sinc for my gmail and not my contacts or my calendar (I unchecg those) I disable the option that allows google to get my location automatically and share my info with google
when Im not using the internet I select the option of 2g networks only
and that saves me ALOT OF BATTERY

Not sure why that's happening, the app definetly works. There's a half second delay when you wake up your phone and you can see the apn being enabled again, as it wasn't there previously. some things to consider:
-You didn't actually activate the app. It's not enough to just install it you have to click on it and select activate.
-You sent the IM's immediately after putting your phone to sleep. It isn't an immediate turn off of the apn, some data may still get through before it completely turns it off.
-Or it maybe a custom ROM problem. Maybe some unique setting is set so your apn behaves differently than the app expects.

This is what I did (and still do) before I installed this app to save battery. Try using the app and you'll see your battery life will almost double.
I can only agree. Works fine for me. Battery lasts considerably longer.

I don't see it on the market?
I see it on developer website as free and has a barcode. I scan it with my barcode scanner and it didn't find on the market either. Is this compatible with cupcake 1.5 ROM or only 1.6 or higher? I like to give this app a try.
Update: OK I looked at the FAQ on dev site and it's not compatible for cupcake ROM. So I guess I have to wait until 2.1 rom comes out.. bummer.

i just searched for it and it is in the android market.
I did a search in the market and found it... it seems to work like the OP said it would... I am still able to receive texts, and I can see the delay when the 3g comes back on. Only time will tell though... If you download the free version, some things are disabled. I might end up getting the paid version later if this really helps.
alright, so i installed it and played around with the settings.
i rebooted my phone and now it doesnt really boot up.
on the lockscreen, i get the 'no service' message. and then it gives me a ton of force closes one right after the other.
so basically, it doesnt allow my phone to boot up. doesnt even get to the part where it gets signal or anything.
im just gonna restore from an earlier backup and see what was wrong. but dunno if this has happened to any of you...

Lost data/internet today...verizon rep hard reboot

So today my data/internet 3g went down...I could receive calls send texts but no 3G verizon rep needed with my cell for a while kept going on how task killer and lookout was bad for my cell and was likely causing the problem...whatever I said and he couldn't figure it out do he hard reset...guy mentioned saving apps to SD card so here come
My noob question how do I save my apps to SD cars? And had anyone had 3g loss issues like I did today?

Same here
I am losing 4g/3g pretty frequently now as well. When it goes off, it doesnt seem to want to come back - but a reboot does it.
The only thing I have kinda noticed is that if I am wifi, then leave the wifi area (thus disconnecting) it tends to drop the 4g as well and wont reconnect. I'll have to test this some more, but thats all I can tell so far.

I am having the same problem as you, between changing back and forth from wifi to 4g and loosing all connectivity besides voice. My girlfriend has a bionic as well and has no problems whatsoever. I also do have lookout installed and she doesn't so I will try uninstalling that to see if it help and check back. But it might be a faulty phone since my girlfriend is having none of my numerus problems. dropping 3g/4g, wifi super slow when my other verizon phone is having no problems with connectivity with 3g/wifi. randomly locks on me while Im using the phone and the timeout is set at 10 minutes. And one time it totally turned off, not even just a reboot. Anyways back to the connectivity, I will try uninstalling lookout and report back! Hopefully that works.
i think verizon is working on their towers and 4g as ive had alot of data issues too until yesterday when it seemed to resolve itself.
Hmm so it may be lookout... Well I installed it again so let's see how it goes on the wifi speed I had the problem the first day I connected to my home connection but as of late its all good. Is anyone else running lookout? Post what up with your bionic running lookout. The rep did say it might be just my cell in particular but seems I might not be the only one I guess will update as day goes

Ive been having the same problem with 3g. I stay on wifi most of the time but whenever I do have to leave the house or work, I will lose 3g at first.
At first, the only way I could find to fix it was with a power cycle. Since then, Ive discovered that turning on and off airplane mode seems to do the trick.
Next time you guys are having trouble, try toggling airplone mode once or twice. That has worked for me everytime.
It's not convenient, but I'm sure there is a fix in the works.
Oh nice i had tried to toggle airplane mode but just once ill give that a shot if i loose 3G again so far last night after hard reset and as of this morning everything running good even with lookout running... Might not even be lookout
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
It is definitely not lookout. Or any other useless battery drainer. Toggling airplane mode, rebooting, etc do nothing for me. It decides when it wants to come back.
I have had the same issue once today. It was alot more yesterday.
If it keeps up, I'll be taking it back.

Airplane toggle hasnt done the trick for be. Just as a shot in the dark, I removed juice defender. I do not think that is the culprit here, but anything that controls my radios is suspect at this point.
Huh i just thought about something yesterday in the morning i saw a post Bout someone developing an fm radio app and thinking about it now after i installed it thats when i started having issues... I am not rooted yet and haven't applied any hacks/tweaks. My data connection drops whether Im in a 4G or 3G area, automatic or CDMA only.
Seems to happen randomly although this last time it happened after unplugging the Bionic from charging. Toggling airplane mode restores data temporarily. Verizon will probably issue an OTA update soon to fix this but I hope it doesn't break the root exploit or I won't install. Once we have a working ClockworkMod recovery the ROM chefs should be able to fix this...
I heard the verizon rep say that his bionic did the same thing when it was charging via computer because it was in debug mode so you might want to look into that if you charging via a computer... Maybe?
Sent from my DROID BIONIC using XDA App
I've been experimenting a bit today and it seems that anytime my phone switches between data types, the signal goes down until a power cycle or toggling airplane mode. It happens the most when my phone goes from wifi to 3g. Whenever I leave my wifi area (work or home), the phone fails to find a 3g connection. This also happens if I manually turn off Wifi. If I've been on a wifi connection for a good amount of time and then disconnect the wifi, the phone won't find 3g.
Not sure if it has to do with my settings, but figured I'd mention them here.
Most of the time, I am in a 3g area so I keep my phone on cdma only unless I'll be traveling to a 4g area. Not sure if changing the settings to CDMA/LTE will change anything but I'm going to try that next.
Anyway, this is definitely something that needs to be brought up with both Verizon and Motorola. The more people who notice and say something, the faster we'll get a fix...at least in theory.
I switched to Verizon from Sprint and I'm not going back. Despite the issues, Verizon's 3g has been 5-6 times faster than the 3g I got with Sprint. Besides that, I should have 4g by the end of the year and the 25 Mbps down I am getting in surrounding 4g areas is killer. Just hope my switch to Verizon wasn't in vane. There isn't another phone on their network that even looks halfway appealing at this time and I can't wait a month for the Vigor or anything else to come out. Plus I like motorola build quality. So, let's hope a DEV or Motorola and Verizon gets this fixed on the fly cause its definitely an annoying issue.
Anyhow, if anyone finds a workaround or solution to this better than toggling airplane mode, please let us know. Starting to get tired of pulling out my phone looking for something, only to find out that I don't have data.

Data Drop/Mobile Network Issues

Well, this has been happening for about two days now. My mobile network will drop out and I have to toggle airplane mode to get it back - only to have it drop about 5 minutes later. It's getting really annoying. I am rooted, but that is it. Nothing is frozen or removed.
Anyone else having this issue? I'm wondering if it's Verizon in my area. I'm going to SBF (FTZ) later tonight to see if it fixes it.
Thanks.
EDIT: Not Verizon. Other work peeps who have Verizon have perfect service.
Does anybody know the *228 way of activating a SIM based phone? I'm guessing it has to do with flashing the radio FTZ file via RSDlite.
Also bumping this. Data seems to drop whenever the screen shuts off. I have zero applications installed that would do this - plus I checked my battery and data settings.
I noticed this also. Sometimes it just drops out and airplane mode will get it to jump back on data. I also have a Thunderbolt which doesn't have this issue so it not a problem with service/towers. I had this issue on the earlier builds of gingerbread Roms for the OG Droid but I'm not sure how the Dev's addressed it. In time I'm sure it will get worked out. There is no way of reactivating 4G LTE phones as they "reactivate" every time you reboot the phone. *228 is strictly for 3G phones as you most likely already know but the only similar solution is a reboot.

This might fall into one of Verizon's list of known bugs for the bionic at release.
"Subcategory: 4G/3G Service - Data Connectivity *Marginal 4G to 3G transition: Loss of data connectivity - The device may display 3G service indication but no data connections are possible. Short term work around: The user will need to power cycle the device or enable/disable Airplane Mode. Planned Resolution: A fix for this issue is under review and will be included in the first post launch maintenance release software for this device. The tentative release date is early November 2011."
Sadly this is a known issue and was told this by a verizon engineer AFTER buying the phone. Data drops and data loses will be part of the ota that is suppose to be released eventually, couldn't give me an eta though. Personally I have had the issue when switching from 3g to 4g, example would be driving to work. Sometimes you need to simply turnoff then on the radio (easiest to use airplane mode widget) to get it to reconnect but in some extreme cases a complete factory reset/wipe is needed. That is what happened in my case. If I would have known that this was going to be the case I probably would have gotten the Dinc2 but oh-well, refuse to pay restocking fee.
This happens all the time for me, usually when I first wake up or when I've been on WiFi for a while with data off. I've gotten around this issue (reliably and without powering down or airplane mode toggling 20 times) by:
1) Disabling Juice Defender (temporarily) so that my data will run even with WiFi 2) Ensuring that data is enabled (in Settings)
3) Dialing *#*#4636#*#*
4) Opening "Phone", then tapping "Turn off Radio" at the bottom of the page
5) Tapping "Turn on Radio" again
6) Hitting Back or Home to get back to your home screen
In just a moment, when the radio comes back up, you should find Mobile Data re-enabled. I know Airplane mode should do the same thing, but I've found this more reliable and quicker.
Edit: Turns out that I was using a bad airplane mode widget. When I started using Widgetsoid, Airplane mode worked fine, no need for debug mode. Ignore the above
I read on another forum that it depends on the phone, so I took mine back to Verizon after multiple episodes of losing data until I restarted the phone. They were reluctant to exchange it and said there was a 90% chance that I'd still lose data due to switching between 3g/4g. The rep said that all of their 4g phones did it. I stuck to my guns and got a replacement. A week later I haven't lost data once. Maybe I've just gotten lucky, maybe it's just coincidence, but my experience certainly seems to back up the conclusion that not all Bionics have the problem.
I actually heard that and did the same thing as well and after receiving the new phone all was great for about 3 days then I had a total loss of data, no 3g or 4g and no way to get it back.. That's when I was told to perform a factory reset. Only way to fix it. So I said screw it and rooted my phone and now keep nandroid backups. I hope you have better luck then me... Cross those fingers.

[Q] Droid 4 connection issues

Has anyone else noticed their DROID 4 dropping data connectivity seemingly randomly and requiring a reboot to pick it back up? I know that I am...and I'm wondering if Motorola can't make it hang onto a data connection how hash is ever going to mmake it work right.
I haven't had any issues with data at all... LTE/3G handoffs work perfectly and everything ...And no worries, I am confident the data issues will be sorted out on the ics builds!

Rooted stock, no safestrap.
Though I doubt safestrap is causing data issues, or fixing them for that matter.
While I do plan on flashing some custom ROMs at some point, I have to admit that I'm very happy with the stock rom. Performance is very good, smart actions are actually pretty great (though there are of course 3rd party apps that do the same thing), and the camera app works pretty well.
My only complaint are the window transitions, blech. Yea, you can disable them, but then all the eye candy goes away completely! Ah Moto, why no middle ground?
I have had data connection issues on all the ICS ROMs but data on stock has been pretty solid.
Did you just port your number from another carrier to verizon? I had the same issue plus some and called verizon and they fixed it on their end. Hope this helps.

I had a few problems with my data just going out for a few minutes on the stock rom. I would be browsing the web, and then a page would just not load. I noticed my signal indicator was grey and not blue, and thus I wasn't getting a data connection. I just waited a few minutes and it came back up.
I never really though too much into it because I expect these small things to happen on such a big wireless network.

This is exactly what happens to me. It almost seems like a session timing out and renewing but I don't have a clue how the LTE network works.
Had the same data issue.. went to Verizon store and got a new SIM card (free) and problems cleared right up. Evidently the old SIM card did not get activated properly in their system.
I'm also having connection problems from time to time. I'm in a 3G only area. I'm running a stock non-rooted phone. Usually, I can get the connection back with a reboot. It's still a pain in the ass, I shouldn't have to deal with. I've called Verizon a few times. Its like talking to a wall with them. They act like you are the dumbest person in the world. Hopefully the next update can clear this problem.

After dealing with this problem for over 2 months I finally found an answer.
I have had this problem since day 2 and after getting the run around several times at the Verizon store (They claimed it was because they were upgrading to LTE in the area, which they said we'd have within 1 month over 2 months ago) they told me there was nothing they could do and suggested I call tech support (I don't know why I didn't think of that). I called tech support and talked to a very helpful woman, after describing my problem to her she asked me what phone I had, she knew the issue right after I told her it was the Droid 4. She told me it was a well known issue with the Droid 4 and that they expect a patch to be released at the end of the month (July) that would address the problem. She said that some people have had temporary success with toggling airplane mode (this has never worked for me but rebooting a few times does) and that having WiFi on, even when your not connected, can knock your data connection out (I have been able to reproduce this once so far).
So that's it. Keep your WiFi off when you don't need it, reboot when you have problems, and hopefully it will be fixed at the end of July.
I'm very disappointed with my Verizon store. Some of the employees I talked to owned a Droid 4 themselves and said they had the same problem and still claimed it was tower work. Either they were misinformed, stupid, or they were lying to me (who wants to buy a broken phone).
My Droid 4 does this in 4G mode. I've read that it's due to the nature of SIM cards. The network constantly vets and authorizes the card's access. If this vetting fails, you get the "white out", as I call it. It might clear up on the next pass, or you might have to reboot. My "solution" is to keep it in 3G mode. As for getting a fix at the end of the month, I'm not holding my breath, as I've read that that's VZW's standard response to just get the customer to shut up and go away.
I've been having the data dropping issue as well for the past few weeks. Running stock GB, rooted with safe strap, but have yet to flash a custom ROM. I thought the issue might be because I'm on a legacy Alltel plan with PRL 14012, which is way outdated...
Well, today I believe I finally found the source of what was causing the issue for me personally, from an unexpected source...Flipboard.
I've found myself glancing at it a bunch at red lights when I'm driving, or sitting in a waiting room, etc. Today I was driving though, and noted towards the end of my trip that this was the first time in weeks the phone hadn't once lost it's data connection for the entire drive. After reflecting for a moment on what, if anything, was different about this excursion, the only thing I could come up with is that I hadn't used Flipboard since I left the house. Even though my initial reaction was to seriously doubt a respectable app like that could cause such an issue, I had nothing else to go on. So, for the hell of it, I picked up my phone and fired up Flipboard...
Within 5-10 seconds of clicking it...BAM...gray 4g icon and no data would load. Needless to say, I uninstalled Flip**** right away...then reinstalled so I could comment on it in the market, then uninstalled again, and haven't dropped data at all in the last several hours. I also took note that a guy with a Droid Razr Maxx left a comment complaining that Flipboard was actually causing random reboots for him.
I don't know if any of you have Flip**** installed, or why you're having similar data issues, but if any of you do happen to have it installed, try uninstalling from the phone...not the market. Then, turn your phone off, pull out the SD card and SIM for a moment or so, put them back in, power up the device, and see if that might possibly help alleviate the constant data dropping. If I find I start dropping data again, without Flipboard installed, I'll update this post. Good luck.
No Flipboard on my phone. I'm glad you found an answer to your problem though.

I've been having problems since Verizon turned on 4G LTE in my area. Once a day I have to remove my SIM card. If I don't, the 4G is very unreliable. Could it be a bad SIM card? Or maybe the fact that they just activated it here and they're working out the bugs? Anyone have any ideas?
I also forgot to mention, I've got a Motorola XOOM 4G LTE And have had not one single connection problem since 4G went live in my area.

I just have the data connection issue when ever i flip on wifi then disable it .. a reboot is required for data to work again regardless if i force 3g or if i am trying to use lte.. guessing it is a software bug.. i never seem to have a connection issue if wifi wasnt used prior.

My only complaint are the window transitions, blech. Yea, you can disable them, but then all the eye candy goes away completely! Ah Moto, why no middle ground?

I know this thread and comment are old, but if you use Spare Parts, you can change the Window Transition speed to Fast and then your phone seems much faster/smoother. Don't mess with Window Animation speed if you want to keep th TV-like power off blip.
My Droid 4 Connection Issues

I've been having the data dropping issue as well for the past few weeks. Running stock GB, rooted with safe strap, but have yet to flash a custom ROM. I thought the issue might be because I'm on a legacy Alltel plan with PRL 14012, which is way outdated...

I don't have Flipboard, however I noticed connection issues within 12 hours of getting my phone. At the time it was stock GB. I took it back to the store, he called tech support. Between the 2 of them, my phone was hard reset, the SD and SIM cards were pulled and the phone rebooted, they fiddled with settings, tech support tried to turn on data from their end, nothing worked. I noticed I lost my data connection when the Smart Action for battery saver clicked on. It was like it got stuck and the phone couldn't turn on data anymore. I did a factory reboot, and got data back. I turned on that first smart action, lost data connection again, it wouldn't turn back on. So I did another factory reboot, disabled that "Smart" Action, and been ok since then. I do still loose my connection, but I am able to get it back if I turn wifi on. Not sure why, but it works most of the time. Some days I still have data if I turn my wifi off, other days i have to leave wifi on if I want to use my 4g. I have my phone rooted, running GB and loving Spirit FM..(Having FM radio was the only reason why I rooted my phone..can't live without my FM!!) Is there anything I can do to get my data connection to stay on?
BTW an OTA update has occured for GB, but it doesn't seem to have fixed the problem.

Strange Network Data Issue

Hi
I have been using the Red Magic 3 for a couple of weeks now and I ma generally very satisfied with the phone, but there is one issue which is frustrating me.
I'm a delivery driver and when I'm driving around listening to Spotify, randomly the phone decides to lose the data connection completely and the signal bars will remain stuck on a certain amount of bars despite driving around and actual signal fluctuating. When it does this my data won't work again until I either reboot the phone or toggle airplane mode. It is doing this at least 3 times a day and I can't figure out what is causing it to do this.
Has anyone else experienced this and know how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Never heard/seen of this before. Are you on the latest rom update?

Thanks for the reply. No it's not something I've experienced before either, it doesn't affect WiFi just mobile data. I can't even spot a pattern or a trigger as to why it does it, it just seems really random.
I am currently on version 3.0 of the software which it says is the latest version.
It's so annoying because I am happy with this phone but this is driving me nuts because I can't even make or receive calls when it happens

I think 3.0 is the version of the update software.
The version of the rom can be found in Settings/System/About. It should be something like 1.11 or 1.15 (latest US version.) 2.09 if it's global version.
Now, just a wild idea here: the back of the phone is metal so the only way radio can transmit is through the screen or two metallic antenna bands at the top and bottom sides of the phone. Are you by any chance putting the phone screen down on something metallic?
Also, just to make sure that it isn't some rogue app that is doing this, you could try using the phone in Safe mode, which temporarily disables all installed apps - hold down power button until Restart button appears, hold down Restart button until it asks if you want to reboot into safe mode.

This has me a bit worried, I'm looking at buying one of these and I too am a delivery driver. Where are you located? Maybe something unique to that area? Also what network. I use Red Pocket Mobile (a MVNO reseller) so I can switch to any of the main carriers of tower usage. Currently using their At&t. Could maybe be an issue with APN settings. If you didn't enter any, you may want to google them and try entering in one manually.

Apologies, yes it's the global version 2.09.
Well the phone is in a car phone holder made of plastic when the problem occurs so it shouldn't be that causing it, it also doesn't affect any other phone I've had.
Many thanks for the suggestion of a rogue app, I'll do a factory reset and just install the basic apps I need for work and see if that does the trick ?

Hi, I'm located in the UK and I use the EE network in SIM 1 and Vodafone in SIM 2.
Yes if could be an APN issue as when I put my Sims in the phone they text me saying that they couldn't send the APN settings remotely and I'd have to input them myself, but the settings were already there. I'll try deleting the ones that are there and input them manually.
I think this phone doesn't play very well with the networks here in the UK generally as whenever I have voLTE activated on the phone, all incoming calls show up as unknown callers. I've seen reports of this happening on several UK networks so looks like it might just be that the phone isn't optimized for the UK networks
I have same one .. u solved ut?
I have red magic 6pro and I am seeing exactly this behaviour!! Very frustrating. How to fix this.
I just i stalled the chinese version with android 11 and get way better signal, but is bloatware city and struggling to uninstall gapps. I hesitated before to install chinese version but is something I should have done long time ago.
