CM6 RC2 - Change boot animation? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I posted this at Cyanogen's own forums, but it's much quieter over there than here at XDA, so hopefully someone here can help...
I'm trying to change the boot animation on a Nexus One running CyanogenMod 6 RC2.
I put the bootanimation.zip on my SD card and from Better Terminal Emulator pro ran the command(s):
su
cp /sdcard/bootanimation.zip /data/local/
I then rebooted and no change.
I then used Root Explorer and went and renamed /system/media/bootanimation.zip to zzbootanimation.zip.old in case it was using that one, still, no change after another reboot.
What could be wrong here?
Thanks.

Just back up the old bootanimation.zip and the replace it.

I tried. I've put the custom boot animation in both /system/media/ and /data/local. Checked permissions, but every time I just get the normal CM6 boot animation.

Make sure your bootanimation.zip does not have a capital B

It doesn't, but thanks for the suggestion.

You could probably extract the ZIP of CM6 to some directory and search for bootanimation.zip, see where is it located, and replace on the phone.

Good idea. I'll give that a go. Thanks.

Mmmm, well it's in /system/media, but I have already replaced that file, still no joy :-S
Can anyone confirm for me what the permissions on the zip file should be?
SOLVED! Total brain fart on my part. Thanks for the help chaps.

+1 I hate when people get the issue solved and then don't post a solution.

Would be nice to have a local list of working boot animations here. I figured I'd throw a few out there that I've played with so far. It's a bit of a pain searching threads to find all of them, so if anyone knows of a good collection thread in another forum, a link would be great.

I wouldn't flash any of them. Make sure you only have the bootanimation.zip portion, and drop it in your system/media folder, replacing the existing one with it. I have a folder on my SDCard to store them by name, so I can copy and rename when I want.
How do you change the bootup sound? I went to data/local and didn't see anything there...what folder do you have to drop the mp3 in?

Find a wav file you see fitting for your bootup sound. Download it to your SD card. Rename the file "PowerOn.wav" (this can also be done in the next step). Use Root Explorer or what have you to copy it from your SD card and paste it into system\etc. Reboot and enjoy.
Love the Android Skribble, thanks for posting these.
i've been using this one:

thanks for the info about where to put the boot audio. now to find something that fits. i can't stand the verizon portion of the boot audio!!

Thank you for this.
You can also replace the shutdown sound with an ogg file of your choice. Make sure it is named shutdown.ogg and place it in the system/media/audio/ui folder. I have replaced both my startup and shutdown sounds with the "Droid" sound.
how do I do this on my fascinate? I took the bootanimation.zip and dropped it in the folder, but it won't do anything? Do i need to delete the verizon one or samsung ones?

You need to either delete them, or tack .old on the end of them, so that there is only one file named bootanimation.zip in you system/media folder.

Where did you guys get the droid sound files? Can you please post a link to where I could grab them? THanks!
Does anybody know if it's at all possible to extend the amount of time the boot up sound can play? The boot animation I have works great with this drumloop I have behind it, but it gets cut off at about 8-10 seconds.
ugh, newb ? here.. how do I access the system/media folder?

Your bootanim is now called: sanim.zip
You can also use bootanimation.zip (from 2.2) and rename it sanim.zip and it will work on GB.

Is that still in /system/media? Cause I just looked and there isn't even a .zip at all in that folder?

Umm tbh, I'm not sure. I though it would be.
I'll look for it lol
Idea: (Could it be cause Bob doesn't have a custom boot anim yet that it's not there?)

Yup. Still there.
As for fonts, I believe they are still flipfonts / ttf.
Search market or xda for them, install, and select under settings/display/fonts

[Q] How can I remove messages from the phone log?

I am on a rooted 2.2 captivate but one thing really bugs me and that is the sms messages in the phone log. I know that on some custom ROM's the developer hs removed them. Cognition comes to mind. But without flashing the whole ROM is there a way to get just that functionality? Like say just replacing the phone.apk?
I have done some searching but have been spectacularly unsuccessful. Thanks for any guidance.
Yes you can just replace the apk however it's not the phone.apk it's the logproviders.apk, grab that from a rom and drop it into /system/app on the phone then reboot.

Do I need to do anything about the.odex file? I don't see one in the ROM's I've checked.
You won't find one in the rom its more than likely been deodexed, umm I think you just leave the odex file there.
Rename the original with a .bak at the end before you paste the new one in that way if it doesn't work yo usage a backup of the original.

I copied in a logprovider file from Cognition... verified that the new file is there. But sadly it looks and acts the same as the old one.
I rebooted as well. Thoughts?

Woah woah. Nope.
Make a backup of /system/media/bootanimation.zip
then replace it with the new one. Make sure you fix permissions after replacing it.
If it doesn't work, use this app to install it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.boot.animations&hl=en

Use ES Explorer or Root Explorer or File Manager and go to the file and change permissions to whatever was set on the file originally (Probably rw-r--r--).
If you're not sure how to do this, i'd recommend just using the app I suggested above.

Cant Change Boot Animation

Im attempting to add a custom boot animation to my OPO and I am having a lot of trouble. I searched around and all the threads basically say to put the zip file into system/media for CM roms. My current boot animation comes from a theme pack. I went into themes and unchecked boot animation before adding the new one. Even after adding the new one the animation from the theme is still there. I then swapped to the default theme, and im still getting the same result. I tried using data/local just incase, and got the same result. Do you have any idea what im doing wrong?
You may have a flashable zip as opposed to one you just simply put in the /system/media folder. What did the op recommend for install. I don't know what bootanimation you have.

I have the files for a flashable zip as well as a bootanimation.zip meant to be put directly into the system. The post provided both methods. I tried the flash through TWRP and it failed. As stated above I put the bootanimation.zip into system/media and nothing happens. I even tried it in data/local (had to create the local folder) and still nothing.

Can you throw me a link to which one you are trying to use? Also, what are you running? Cm11s, aosp, etc... You shouldn't have had to create the local folder under data, so best bet would have been the system/media folder.

Sure, thanks for the help. Here is the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115717. Yes Im using CM11s, rooted but not otherwise modified. I thought the problem might have something to do with permissions, so I gave the zip file permission to read/write/execute. Now I am no longer seeing the custom nexus loadscreen from the theme i was using, but I am getting the factory OPO lockscreen.

On CM11s the spot for it is definitely in /system/media. Make sure to move the old one into a folder called old or rename it bootanimation.old. The permissions should be rw- r-- r--. But, if you still don't see it the files may not be formatted to fit the one plus screen.

Not really any ideas. I would just flash back to sick and start over. That way you know the system is fresh and nothing should stop it from working correctly. Losing data sucks, but you could run a rom like Calkulin stock 38r. Just wipe phone correctly and keep all the sdcard data. Minimal setup required after that. And then try out bootanimation right out if the gate.

I ended up doing this today just to get the 38r update. Boot animations from apk's work again. Still no luck with the one I was originally going after but Im still trying. Thanks for the input.
Hi,
I've tried downloading a few boot animations from Theme Showcase, but no matter what I click (boot animations, fonts, wallpapers) it only shows me a list of themes to download. Is there any way to browse the boot animations form this app?
I'm using a OPO which is NOT rooted.
