the best app on the market. use your pc from your phone.
using it right now to post this. love it.
using ultravnc with windows 7 x64. great app.
While there are better remote desktop protocols, vnc is still good.
It's free too. Which is saying something in comparison to the iphone which charges 25$ for the app.
I am willing to pay for it, but not that much.
Awesome, I just got it to work with Tightvnc.
I got androidVNC working with an Asus EEE 900 using KDE desktop sharing. It seems to work really well. And I also used wifi tether and it works as well. I also tried enabling the built-in webcam but the video feed is way slow.
Awesome App
androivnc is an awesome app. I use it with my Windows Home Server and so i can look on my homeserver from everywhere.

Are you running Xandros on your EEE or another distro? I would like to get this set up but I'm running Easy Peasy, will KDE desktop sharing work still?

Froggy, I am using default xandros in easymode. You dont have to install vnc or anything. The KDE remote desktop sharing comes preinstalled in xandros. You just have to open up a terminal and type in
Code:
/home/user>kfrb
to start up the desktop sharing. and if you have androidVNC installed on the g1 you can connect to the eee very easily. my network is setup as wifi tether and i have also tried having both the eee and the g1 on a wireless access point on my network. I havent tried connecting over the internet but i pretty sure it will work.
UltraVNC
I am currently using UltraVNC (WINVNC).
This is pretty slow. Sweet. But slow. I was wondering if anyone has tried multiple servers to benchmark speed.
Or i'm at least trying to identify if one is faster than the other.
Thanks all.
Does it work with RealVNC?
Thanks
My buddy wants to get into android, but he was curious if there was an app where he could control his computer remotely. Like tell it to download something?
That seems extreme and not feasible to me. Any apps out there close to this though?
I need to pull up gmote and see its capabilities.

I think that you might be able to control your computer with VNC but I haven't tried.
In regards to downloading... sure. There are a lot of torrent apps that will connect to your bittorrent clients (such as utorrent or whatever). You just need to make sure everything is set up properly.
Yeah, he has utorrent on his computer currently. So can he see his desktop on his droid and open up programs on his computer?
If so, that seems unreal to me. I looked and saw on gmotes site they had a beta that sounded like this.
Can anyone confirm? Thank you guys.

If he's using a Windows Desktop, there is a RDP client on the App Market, just search for RDP. He will need to have his router setup to forward the proper ports (3389 TCP) to his computer for it to work, but I've used it to download things in a pinch, and copy it up to a webserver to download on my G1....
he's not gonna be doing anything ridiculous on it, remember there is a HUGE resolution difference b/t G1/DROID/Mobiles in general vs Computer Resolutions...
Okay, sounds very intriguing.
Let me word it differently though:
From his Droid, would he be able to see his desktop and scroll to uTorrent and tell it to download something, to his computer, not the droid.
You guys are awesome. I am floored that our G1 can do what you guys have told me. I obviously need to move beyond flashing roms and themes and learn what the guts can do.

Really what it sounds like you're asking, is he can remotely connect to his desktop, use it to search for and download the torrent file, and open it in the torrent client...? Complete remote control of his computer from off-site...? I don't know about you guys, but I have to search for and find a torrent file from a tracking site (demonoid, thepiratebay, etc.) and d/l that, then open it in my torrent client (utorrent).
I don't think this is capable yet... but I'm interested to hear more about this from those that know.
Remote Desktop Client works just like RDP and will allow you to log into your computer at home from your android phone using your windows login. Once logged in you have your trackball to move the mouse and can do anything you could do sitting in front of your computer. Its a $15 app which is really high for android OS but its been more than worth $15 all the times its saved my butt.
I also use it to monitor my utorrent download remotely.

If he has uTorrent then he can just set up the webui and forward his utorrent port on his/her router to the ip address of the computer. then download Transdroid (what I use because it has a decent widget) and set that up. TIP: use no-ip (or whatever) to set up a static ip address and change the name (like [email protected]) so you can just input that in the Default Server settings in the Transdroid preferences. It also uses isoHunt, Mininova, BT Junkie and even allows you to enter your own to search for new torrents. When you find one to download simply select it and it sends it to the computer. From there the uTorrent client will open the torrent that was sent and starts the download process. You can easily track the status of the active torrents on the client with it as well.
There are some out there that will even let you scan a barcode of a movie (useful if your in the video store) and it'll lookup the movie and send the torrent to your pc and it'll start downloading. If you have a decent enough internet connection you can go to the video store, scan a movie in the New Releases section, leave empty handed, get some Jack In The Box and by the time you get home the movie can already be on your computer ready to be viewed/burned. And it's not just for movies. It's for any other type of torrent.
Hey guys,
Sorry to say but my laptop just died on me...
So im wondering about the capability of the nook color, which im using to write right now.
how does the ubuntu run compared to the honeycomb?
I am looking for msword capabilities and external keyboard capabilities especially.
thanks for all the inputs
I wish they'd get ubuntu netbook or jolicloud on the nook color
From what I recall they couldn't get wifi working on ubuntu last time I checked, not sure how progress has been on that front
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Particularly I am wondering how good ubuntu software that is already available to nook really is. i've never used ubuntu before.
on a side note, can anyone tell me if there is a way to boot straight into win7 from an external hard drive? a link would be nice since the internet on the nook is lacking, and having no undo button sucks too.
currently have the nook color running phiremod and samsung fascinate superclean, but no computer with sdk or adb access..

I haven't personally tried running ubuntu on the NC yet, but from the way I understand it, its not going to be a notebook replacement anytime soon.
If you really need to use the NC to replace a real PC at the moment, I'd be looking more in the direction of using dolphin browser and a bluetooth keyboard while running CM7.
On your sidenote, did just the HD on your pc die?
http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/01/21/seven-steps-to-a-bootable-windows-7-thumb-drive/
You will need a working PC to do it and IIRC you need win7 to make the drive bootable the way he describes, although it may be possible in vista, I don't recall.

Yeah, once a release CM7 is nailed down with functional bluetooth and good compatibility with a couple of BT keyboards I could definitely see using the NC as a laptop replacement (just install a decent office app and you're good to go).

Isn't that possible now.
Remember the Nook is a well specc'd Android e-book that just so happens is capable of being expanded to full Android tablet functionality. It is not a laptop replacement but can be used for light supplementary laptop like work.
So...
Watch Youtube
Watch ripped video's
Listen to music, Pandora etc
Email (Web based email such as Hotmail/Gmail as well as IMAP, POP3 and corporate Exchange email)
Browse the web (Flash currently sucks horribly when it can be made to work)
Read and do VERY basic creation and editing of MS Office docs through apps such as "Docs to Go"
Right now, using CM7 there is VERY limited BT connectivity available, we are taking 2-24 inches at best in range. There is NO USB hub functionality and no idea if that can even be enabled (although if anyone can get it to work it will be the CM7 guys...)
This is all a work in progress and to be honest if you're set on a touchscreen slate/tablet that can run Office apps, Outlook etc get a Win 7 built slate like the EXOPC etc.
I have ubuntu running on an older laptop and love it - I have a macbook air for my own use, wife and I each have dell windows laptops for work, son has a high end windows system for gaming - I'm very agnostic about computers.
I took one of my step-daughter's old windows laptops and repurposed it to ubuntu. Prior to the macbook air, this was my machine for personal use - android development, etc. Ubuntu is fiddlier than windows to get set up - finding the right driver's can take some effort - but I've found the performance you get from your hardware to be exceptional. There are a lot of good software solutions available on ubuntu now - open office has free software that largely replaces word, ppt, excel. Graphics are nice, chrome and firefox are both available and are very stable, and updating and maintenance aren't a big issue. My wife uses it now as her primary non-work computer - does all her options trading on it. I'd definitely look at ubuntu on an older machine if you don't require windows compatibility for work reasons. Unix was an amazing concept and its children have been very successful - linux, ubuntu (variation of linux), mac osX, iOS, android.
My macbook air though is by *far* the best computer I've ever owned, followed by the ubuntu laptop which shames my work dell laptop running windows XP. The macbook is incredibly stable and *fast* compared to my work laptop which is severely bogged down by corporate software. Office 2011 on my macbook is far faster than office 2010 on my windows laptop which has the faster processor. Windows doesn't have to be slow but gets severely clogged up very quickly.
The nook color is not a substitute for any of these. It really is suited for content consumption rather than creation - I wouldn't want to write a report on this. If I were strapped for money, I'd look for an inexpensive or used pc laptop. On the used one, I'd put on ubuntu.
Peter
I'm assuming the Nook Color is a little less powerful than my g tablet. That being said, I'd opt for a netbook, maybe one of the convertible ones if I needed to type anything but needed small size.

Yea i've done all of that, and everything works fine except msoffice capabilites and how good the bluetooth keyboard is thru wifi. Im typing thru slideit right now, and although the best keyboard so far for the nook, its function is limited by the screen which can register things one at a time not very fast.
I am not looking for another tablet, but something that can run win7 relatively fast. My computer died after me spilling hot water on it, nothing turns on so im thinking that the hdd isn't affected, only the power supply. My usb coincidentally has win7 on it but for installing. Ive heard of ubuntu bootable drives, anything for windows?

I use it almost daily.
i notice this app in the android app store today. has anyone purchased this $4.99 app? recommendations? pros and cons?
damn, instead of fixing their app they want us to buy it AGAIN?!
this kind of behavior by app makers really makes me mad!!
...and besides, by the comments, it looks like it still changing the host's resolution, that is the biggest issue with this app for me, as it messes with all open windows locations and sizes.
this is bull****, it should be an update. i have the old app and it's the best for streaming videos but not for actual work, for that i recommend teamviewer.
i disagree. this app is great and is well worth the $5 dollars for their hard work. you can always request a refund for the first app. they might not give it to you but its worth a shot.
the app runs incredibly even on my ****ty internet
it originally does change your resolution size however when reverting back to normal resolution the orientation of your desktop is left unchanged! you can make it not change your resolution at all in the settings for the connection itself.
great app
I bought it since I do not have it yet. yes it DOES change the host resolution to 720p which is VERY annoying but otherwise it is pretty good.
THanks for the heads up....although I SWEAR that I saw this thread in the Asus Transformer section....now it is in Xoom section?
I like the app, except I wish it had the ability to blank the screen on the host. Resolution change doesnt bother me as it does this to match the screen resolution of the xoom. Also you can not use it outside of your own LAN yet which is a pretty big deal.

Sure you can, it's called port forwarding.
By the way this version of the app utilizes the dual core tegra more efficiently and they are already optimizing for 1280x752 instead of just 1280x720. I was running around in WoW for a few minutes, it was funny

Yes you can, you can use it as long as you know your IP address and the port that is assigned to Splashtop, it tells you that when you configure it the first time.
I bought the program based on the comments in the market after the OP here made me aware of the program. I think it's a great program and it does exactly what it says it does.

That's normal for remote desktop. Even the windows client from Microsoft does this.
If you don't want this behavior you're going to need to find a different protocol, like logmein or VNC.
I bought it, love it. Might as well get it now before the price raises to 10. Even if not going to use it much like me.

that is not correct. RDP can just use the host resolution (or any available resolution in the host) like any other! even spalshtop for iOS can do that!!
check your facts before posting something like that!
Ok just to be fair, if you adjust it to use the computer's native resolution, it doesn't change a thing host wise. It defaults to best fit the device using it, and most people don't know how to change it or didn't know you could.

that is something that already existed in iOS version, but not in the non-HD version and the description of the app didn't mentioned it... some posts confirmed it changing the resolution anyway, like the non-HD version, but I'm glad they actually implemented this setting this time. (can you confirm it not changing a host resolution larger the 1280x800? 1440x900 or 1920x1080? thanks)
Just waiting if they can refund the old version now, as I have no use for it and was just it for this single option to be implemented.
Yes, my res is 1440*900 and it doesn't change a thing host wise for me.

Your request is very modest. You're asking someone to spend hours trying to establish whether certain apps run on the Note (or Android) or not.
Go visit the Google Market and see for yourself. There's tens of thousands of apps there, covering everything under the sun.
GNote can be rooted, that I can tell you, our future good member.

i came from an n900 too, was a good swap.
you can use something like eset mobile security for your sms con stuff. more or less the same thing, can remote wipe, remote lock, remote GPS, etc. although samsungdive.com will give you similar control via a web browser.
no xterminal that i know of, so you cant run 'sudo gainroot' but there are other ways of gaining root. theres a one click root method.
theres another app called 'gotya!' where it snaps a photo of whoever is trying to unlock your device and then emails the photo to you.
backup stuff can be handed via clockworkmod on custom firmwares or via samsung kies software.
there are plenty of emulators on the android market/google play or whatever its called now.
multitasking on android isnt as efficient as on the n900. on the n900, you have that multitask button, which was pure awesome. on android, by default the nearest thing we have is if you press and hold the home key, you can see the last bunch of recent apps, it doesnt tell you if its running or not. there was a visual task switcher on the market that ran similar to the n900 multitask method, but it doesnt run on anything newer than froyo. the next best thing would be something like 'smart task switcher'.
dunno about the other stuff you've mentioned though.
Hi Nicholes,
openssh - yes, there are several free ssh client apps, but better terminal emulator pro (£2.49) gets best reviews. I haven't tried ssh on the note myself (yet!) - I used it on n900 at first but soon replaced with openvpn which met my needs better. I've setup openvpn on my note (requires root and a custom kernel with tun.ko) it runs very nicely.
smscon - partial: samsung offer their own free app for the note, see: http://v2.samsungdive.com/help/guideRemoteControlsClear.do and there are other smilar free apps - however I haven't seen one that offers linux shell command "passthrough" via SMS like the SMScon app does for n900. I used to use reverse ssh to be able to do full remote control of my n900 outwith any apps - it took a while to get that set up to maintain tunnels across wifi/3G changes, and once I had it working I never had cause to use it Anyway, a combination of one of the free remote location pps plus ssh should give you most of what you're used to.
backup menu - I never used it on n900, but if you root the note then you have titanium backup (for apps/data) and CWM (full /system image).
evil alarm - haven't looked, but guaranteed to be one in android market (or should I say "google play" as it's about to be rebranded).
HEN - yes, note has full usb on the go/host mode out of the box, so much easier and more reliable, plug & play
xterminal - yes. plenty of terminal emulators to choose from, I use "terminal emulator". It's not as nice as n900, lacking the h/w keyboard and it doesn't support tab key to autocomplete, but pretty usable.
emulators - gain, no idea but pretty sure there are loads
vnc viewer - yes, I use pocketcloud free - excellent VNC client. The free version only allows one saved connection but that is sufficient for me. THe screen size of the note makes this a far better remote access solution than the n900 (even though I loved presenceVNC, you cant beat some physical real estate for remote access work). There is also 2x client for RDP client access to windows boxes. This is free, has no limitations, and works excellently. Again, better than RDP client on n900 partly due to better/more intuitive mouse/keyboard support but also jsut screen size.
root access - yes, pretty easy to do although some newer firmwares are not directly rootable (need a downgrade->root-> upgrade). Drawbacks to being rooted I've come across: some apps (eg. skygo for UK access to sky TV) don't work with rooted phones unless you jump through hoops;
and how is multitasking on galaxy note? errr ... a bit of a dissapointment after n900! task switching is a bit cumbersome by comparison (though fine once you are used to it) but android tends to arbitrarily remove tasks from memory if you aren't using them which sucks. Also, if you are watching video it's not easy to concurrently do other stuff on android - as soon as you switch away from video, it auto-pauses. that said, the extra RAM makes up to an extent
I'd suggest you re-post this question over at TMO - there is a samsung galaxy note thread there which has been running for a while and there are several active n900/note users on it who know much more than me about android and I think you'll probably get more/better replies there. They are currently discussing an Android video player that allows you to run the video windowed or even minimised
EDIT - oh, just noticed that you've already posted there too ... you're way ahead of me!

I did not find (or manage to compile) openssh for Android. dropbear has much less features (both client and server), so if you use any specific feature that openssh has and dropbear does not have, you might have a problem. I wrote a simple bash script to parse openssh's .ssh/config file and run dropbear with the correct parameters, which gives me a client that behaves similarly to openssh client.

Tab completion is not a function of the terminal emulator, but of the shell. The ash shell which is included in busybox in packages such as "terminal emulator" and "sshdroid" does support tab completion. It is not the default login shell, so you need to change the configuration, or run it manually.

You're not specifying whether you want an SSH client or server. But yes, there are plenty of both on the App Market.

No, there is no X.Org and as such no xterminal either. If you're looking for just a terminal emulator then there is one called Better Terminal Emulator Pro that is very good.

Good enough. Less powerful than on N900 as it is limited by Dalvik itself, but anyways.
can anyone confirm for me?

NITdroid is not useable, it lacks way too many features on N900.

Good luck to you. I got you wrong, my bad. I thought you were gonna post how nokia/meego/maego was (?!) better than android. And welcome to the forum.

Actually, as a Note owner i would have preferred maemo on my Note. Too bad they dropped it for sucky wp7

I did the swap and was obsessed with my n900. But the note is far far superior. Its not quite as 'nerdy' as the n900 in my opinion. But does everything I've asked of it. wait until you see the notes screen. Its blinding in comparison to the n900. You wont look back. Trust me. Providing you have some basic technical knowledge (which I assume you do coming from the Nokia) you will have no trouble rooting and playing with kernels. Etc. It seems to me that the devs for the note and for android in general provide more complete packages than I experienced on the n900. Kernels are optimized and roms have all the tweaks you would want applied. Where the n900 was more of a manual affair messing with the terminal (which I did love doing). I barely use the terminal now as most apps are very well written and have all the tweaks and features you need for customizing without the nitty gritty of line by line and scripts in the n900. Just my opinion though!

and how is multitasking on galaxy note? errr ... a bit of a dissapointment after n900! task switching is a bit cumbersome by comparison (though fine once you are used to it) but android tends to arbitrarily remove tasks from memory if you aren't using them which sucks. Also, if you are watching video it's not easy to concurrently do other stuff on android - as soon as you switch away from video, it auto-pauses. that said, the extra RAM makes up to an extent

Also completely agree with the above.

While on this issue, is there a replacement for Mappero (maemo-mapper)? The features I miss in Google Maps compared to Mappero are:
On map tracking (including display of track length).
Display of route length/route distance remaining.
Precaching of maps by coordinates or along routes.
Saving of routes (for using without internet access.
You've got many answers on the app side of questions so i'll just say this. I too came from the n900 and i am very disappointed with the multitasking. I also completely agree with _pigro_.
There isnt much else im not happy with though. The size is phoenominal!
Do it you will be happy. Rooting and custom rom fun galore!
How's that for multitasking on the note?

Sure it is capable of running lots at the same time but the actual handling of multitasking on android is far inferior.
Dont get me wrong, i am impressed with android, but i expected better multitasking. I have also experienced closing of apps that i left running but most of the time its seems ok and i can get used to it as the note is impressive in every other way.
The n900 also gave live thumbnails of apps when switching which still impressed me for the two years after my contract ended that i kept the n900 for. Such a good phone for its time.

I had a N900 before i bought a SGS2 and now have both SGS2 and Note!
The answer to your questions:
Q: Open ssh?
A: Don't need this!
Q: app like smscon?
A: Use Avast Anti-Theft!
Q: backup menu?
A: CWM!
Q: evil alarm!
A: Lot's of apps that do that!
Q: H-e-n?
A: On The Go (OTG) USB is supported by all versions of Gingerbread and ICS! No extra app for that is needed!
Q: xterminal?
A: MANY, MANY,MANY terminals for free in Market lol
Q: emulatores?
A: PS1, N64, etc etc etc.. all available in Market!
Q: vnc viewer?
A: Yep this too.. and you can emulate Linux and Backtrack 5
Root access is available to all devices that i know and multitasking works like a charm
Go get it!!! It's worth it and believe me, i loved my N900 and i love my Note even more!
Everything you dream you could do on N900 you can do on Note and more!
