Looking for a couple specific apps please :) - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone. If somebody needs to move my thread then please do to the correct area
Just got my Nexus One today and loving it so far. Im now on the lookout for some apps.
I read somewhere (could of been on this forum, not sure) that there is an app that tells you how much data you are using/have used - what is the name of that please?
Also is there such an App which tells you when you have lost your Wi-Fi signal/When you are using 3G data and not Wi-FI? (I know you can just look at the notification bar, but with me being a new user Ill most likely forget)
Also looking for some "must have" apps.
Thanks in advance for all the help - it is greatly appreciated

Because your from New Zealand... although a search might have helped...
OSMonitor (free on the market) will show you your data usage under each interface on the Network tab. Also there are widgets on the Market for this including a free one called "3G Data Usage" and another called "Traffic Counter" - if you search for "data usage" on the Market you'll get a few results.
WiFi Status is the other app you're looking for.
Now, try my rom and support another Kiwi!

App for controlling data usage.

Hi there,
I'm looking for a specific app for my rooted 2.1 G1. I'm on a Vodafone pay as you go thing, and internet/data usage is pricy on this. Is there an app which stops ALL data usage/internet/GPS(Does GPS use data usage?)/etc unless connected to WiFi, in which case it'll allow all that?
Thanks in advance

Oh fantastic! I think that might be perfect
One question though, if the APN is off will I still be able to make/recieve calls and texts?
You can also use droidwall. Its really useful and free on market
APN OnOff is no longer free from what I can tell from the Market, but DroidWall looks ideal.
Thanks!

Network Traffic Monitor that tracks Apps traffic

Is there any app that displays which app connected to the internet and using how much data.
I ve seen NetCounter etc but I am not lloking for an app to monitor my BW.
I'm looking for something like Tcpview from Sysinternals

http://www.appbrain.com/app/3g-watchdog/net.rgruet.android.g3watchdog
Only on pro. I would like to try before buy

no it doesn't. here is the reply from author:
Hi,
No, sorry it doesn't. Have a look at busybox if you have a rooted phone, maybe it offers some network related commands.
Cheers

I never said it would show the connections.
It will only show the total upload and download usage on 3g/edge/gprs (does not count wifi)
Three was a misunderstanding then.
I love TrafficStats and it graphs and everything.
hi you can bandwidth monitor you can try use protemac. com ProteMac Meter. It;s really nice prog)
How about AppTraffic Free? Shows each app data usage.
Apptraffic works great for me. Samsung Galaxy Note N7000.
I wish there was an ad-free version, however. The app itself uses a little data when it loads. Not much, but when you are watching every one of those bytes...
Onova, works and is free and is adfree

Android already shows the amount of data used per app. Go to settings, data. There is a whole list.

My data manager is pretty good and free!!
I like to use Network monitor mini as well to see the actual throughput i'm getting. Not broken down by individual app but still useful.
I have the same problem but I think I may have a bad app.
Is there no way to see which App is connected to which IP adresses atm? Or any chance to get info via Terminal emulator?
They informed me at work that my device is blocking about 30% of the net-usage so I wondered myself. And something always connects to internet on 3G too...

Lost My 3 Widget!

I wiped my phone, didn't backup anything and got Android Revolution HD
When I got my phone with 3 it had alot of extra useless apps/widgets but there was one that looked very useful!
I can't find it on the app store or anywhere when I Google but its a My 3 Widget.
It allows me to simply have a widget telling me my data usage and so on without having to get to it though the browser.
Does anyone have it???
Or even a backup of the default ROM from a DHD from 3?
Give Quota a go, its available for free from the market and comes with a small widget that shows call and data balances for most Aus providers including 3. Much better than 3's widget imo

Thanks!
I ended up getting the widget back. But it didn't want to work...
EDIT: I don't know if I even have a Username/password to access my stuff on the 3 website so I can't set my icon or whatever to the 3
EDIT: EDIT: Whats Wifi Limit? I assume Cellular Limit is my 'mobile internet' if Wifi Limit is ment to mean my home internet or whatever then I should disable it yeah?
EDIT: EDIT: EDIT: I'm using 3G watchdog. The one you told me is too complicated. This one has got all I need.

Don't use tethering apps from the market. Your phone supports native "access point" type tethering. It's called "Mobile AP" and was built into your ROM via Samsung.
I believe it's disabled in AT&T stock ROMs, but it can be re-enabled without too much fuss. SEARCH and you will find the answers you need.
PS, since this is a question, it should have been posted in the "Captivate Q&A" forum, not in the general forum. And also, this question has been asked/discussed/re-discussed many times already.
In the future please SEARCH a little bit more before posting.
if you had read my post a little closer Shammyh i think you'd see that i DID search and i couldn't find the info. i also should of mentioned that i'm not using stock ROMS. i'm just trying to figure out how to do a wireless tether and no wireless tether apps are showing up in the market (hence my question if att removed them or if it was just me).
i may have posted in the wrong forum, and if i did i apologize. but it was meant for general discussion considering the conversations we've had on the forum concerning att's conquest to eliminate tethering. thanks for the response as it prompted me to search more but couldn't find any new useful info.

stock rom or not, Wireless AP is included in your rom....look under WIRELESS AND NETWORKING in your SETTINGS menu
you dont need a third party app to do it, but in answer to your question, yes, ATT is blocking you from seeing those downloads on the market. you can get around that by putting your phone in airplane mode, turn on wifi, and browse the market....
yeah that's what i thought. i know i have wireless tether build into my rom now (just found out via confirmation), i couldnt find the wireless tether app i used to have and lost after losing my tibu backup when i flashed.
so what sort of apps is att blocking other than just tether apps? i'll see if i can have someone delete this thread.

You can use this tool called MarketAccess to emulate different "carrier versions" of the Android Market. From there you can look and see what apps are available or not.
Also, I read your first post in its entirety. Even the simplest of searches would have quickly gotten you to the answer you were looking for.
The motto around here is: search, read, search, and read some more. then after careful consideration, and even more searching, start a new thread.
Shammyh beat me to it, he is right.

Android OS using data

Hey!
I'm getting crazy here...
I do not have an internet flatrate on my phone, everything is prepaid, i.e. every time I access the internet via mobile data I lose money !
My provider lets me access facebook for free -> I sometimes use it on the go.
Eventhough its free I lose money through "Android OS" downloading stuff...
I'm using Droidwall and only allowed Dolphin to use mobile data. Android OS still has access somehow...
Does anybody know how to stop Android OS from using data? I don't have any syncs on. Even when using the option "restrict background data" i lose money though Android OS. My Data Manager also just tells me "dolphin" and "OS services"...
Hope you can help!

Thanks for trying to help but you cannot imagine how often i do a factory reset. This does NOT fix the problem of Android OS.
Have you enabled - back up my settings, etc. to my google account ?
In most ICS Rom are widget buttons where you can find "Toggle sync". Disable synchronization by this widget doesn't help?

I disabled the sync toggle from the power management widget...
Its driving me crazy! :/
Hmm, if you switched off general synchronization and it doesn't help, maybe try switch off synchronize in every application, e.g, weather, google play etc.
It's a bit strange, but maybe it'll help
Don't know if that would help, since i use Droidwall to block all internet accesses on mobile data exept Dolphin. AndroidOS still has access but i cannot figure out why...
Which processes are AndroidOS? Is there any Spy App that could tell me this?
Hmmm.... use a DroidWall from Google Play, if your phone is rooted.
After install, you can precisely set which app would you like to grant net access, and it is possible to allow access over wifi only.
Another what you can try is PermissionsDenied. Here you can set the net access via each app permission.
Now Im saying it thrice. I am using Droidwall!

I guess it's not much solace, but I'm experiencing the same. I know a bit about Android/Linux/etc., so I took a look at the firewall rules. Theoretically it is possible that some packets are leaking through the rules of DroidWall (or the firewall rules of "avast! Mobile Security" ... but they are mostly the same as DroidWall's rules). Later I'll test this by adding a custom rule that logs everything that gets past DroidWall's rules and see if any traffic shows up that should be caught by DroidWall. I'll report back my results here.
Ok, I got to the bottom of this. In my case I was seeing very small amounts of data usage and it was attributed to the "Android OS" app/component in the "Settings / Data usage / Mobile" screen. As it turned out, the small traffic was caused by regular DNS requests (since I had "avast! Mobile Security" installed which always allows outgoing DNS requests ... regardless of your firewall settings).
I wrote a pretty thorough post on my experiences in my blog: muzso.hu/node/4943
P.S.: I do not have yet 10 posts on xda-developers so I was not allowed to insert a proper link to my blog post (but I guess a copy&paste is not too much to ask for if you're interested in the details)
