[Q] Unable to access Download or Recovery Mode - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title suggests I am having trouble getting into the Download or Recovery modes on the Galaxy S.
I have tried every combination of key presses I have been able to find on the forums including:
- All different combinations of PWR + VOL UP / VOL DN + HOME (release power at the first / second Samsung logo)
- Connecting to USB with no SIM card and holding both volume buttons while pressing power for various lengths of time
- Using the *2767*3855# and repeating the above
Apparently there are different combinations floating around for different phones. This one was delivered a week ago through Optus in Australia.
I was wondering if there was a full list of the various methods which can be used ? Is there such a thing as a Galaxy S with this disabled?
I have used adb to root the phone, but before I try anything else too messy I wanted to make sure I had a way of recovering the phone if I manage to screw it up to the point it won't load Android enabling adb / reset codes giving me an expensive paper weight!
Thanks.
p.s. appologies if this isn't in the right place or I have missed an answer in any of the other threads, but all the options I managed to find don't seem to work.

Turn the phone off and remove the SD card and SIM card.
Hold in the Vol Down + Home buttons then press and hold the power button.
Hope that helps.
If this doesn;t work I make the assumption that this is one fo the one's which has the feature disabled and you might haev to take back to OPTUS and complain that its a DOA.

I just got my phone today through Virgin.
I am also unable to enter recovery / or download mode. Is there anyway around this if they have created a "read only mode?"
I might have to take it back and then hope I don't get another one?
Anyway to check on S/N or something?

Sorry for the newb question, but can you easily leave recovery mode without making changes if you just want to see if you have the functionality?

Anyone cares to lead a bounty to make the 3 buttons working?
there are already a couple of guys looking into it phoenixdigital and Benjamin Dobell as I recall
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=756002
I already lead the unlock bounty and i forked out $75 of my own money, now everyone is reaping the benefits meanwhile i get nothing in return

Yeah I'd definitely contribute to a 3 button bounty. I don't even have my phone yet but there are a lot of stranded folks in need of help.

my galaxy s can't go into download mode too
i bought it from optus australia last week

Got my phone - no download or recovery mode. I'm going to try and return it to Virgin. I ordered online so it is going to be one mighty battle.

me too, i bought from optus last week
and can't enter both mode

+1 S/N 61xxxx here in Finland from DNA. No download or recovery mode.

[Q] Captivate without 3 button combo

I've tried everything in the book, my Captivate is one of the phones that will not boot into recovery using any sort if button combo, I have to use ADB. My phone is rooted, lag fix, bloatware removed, sideloading enabled, MobileAP installed, and the Vibrant's GPS files installed, and I'm afraid that someday I'm going to need my phone in recovery/download for Odin3 because I've bricked my phone, but I wont be able too because if my phone's setup. I'm just asking, question of concept, is it possible for someone who knows what they are doing (I have no inexperience) to find the difference between a Captivate w/ the 3 button combo, and one w/o, so that I could manually enable it.

if you brick your phone, your main worry is how to get into download mode. take battery out, put back in, hold volume down+power while plugging in usb cable. can you at least do that?
As I said, I've tried every trick in the book, it doesn't work.

go to where you got it, tell them its a samsung problem, they SHOULD replace it. Before you okay the replacement try to boot the phone without the sim to recovery.
try turning off. Unplug USB. Then hold down the Vol down button and the power button. Just the 2 of them.
Then insert the USB cable 2-3 seconds after holding those 2 keys down.
That worked for me even though I used to use Vol up and down and power all together.
Hope it works for you.
we need a sticky that includes EVERY single way of recovering from all these "bricked" phones. I'm nervous that it will happen to me one day and i won't know what to do. Everyone says there is always a way to unbrick, but there sure are a lot of people that have claimed to try every possible way of entering download mode and still not happen.....and i don't want to get stuck with them!
BTW, did you try plugging your phone into the wall for awhile and then going back to trying usb and download modes?
i also have the same problem with a friends phone. i know the newer ones have issues with the 3 button combo and adb is the only way. i suppose there is a way to remove the block from boot that detects the command, maybe like a different firmware, i remembered that the stock i9000 firmware on the captivate uses only vo down + power to get to download mode but i will not want to risk the phone or it will be bricked.
i know alot of users in this forum are saying read the stickys but until u experience the problem, u will be singing a different tune. there are new captivate owners that cannot get into download mode with the 3 button combo.
i will confirm this and i have 3 other captivates that going into download mode no prolems with 2 possible 3 button combo, just only 1 that doesnot
Yes, I think someone needs to make a sticky for this. Mine works with 3 buttons, but I have seen many many users now that have 3 button disabled. I'm sure they appreciate all the suggestions, but every single person recommends the regular button methods that just don't work!
I would say, if it were me, I would stop modding it now before you f*** it up and return it to the store. I would also test the new phone in store until you get one that works.
I'm sure someone much smarter than I will figure out a software method for this. I find it hard to believe the when the phone is in Phone--!--computer mode that there is no possible way to force it into download mode via software. I know adb doesn't work, but theres got to be some other developer tool that will work.
Part of the issue is terminology.
Recovery Mode is what you use to clear cache, clear user data, or install an update.zip file by selecting "Reinstall Packages".
Download Mode is the screen with a yellow triangle and android digger icon and allows you to use odin to flash. This is the important one for recovering from a problem.
Both modes can be entered with ADB. Both modes can be entered with hardware buttons and that's where things get tricky.
On my phone, I can activate recovery mode with the steps below:
Power off
Hold both volume buttons
Press Power
Release power when I see the AT&T splash screen
Release the volume buttons a second or two after releasing power
If I continue to hold all three buttons, the phone simply boot loops at the AT&T screen with a blank flash in between. If I continue to hold the volume buttons after releasing the power button, the phone will boot normally. I have to release them to get into recovery. The phone also has to get past the AT&T splash screen before recovery will load.
I can only enter download mode with the steps below.
Phone off
Remove battery, sim, microsd
Hold volume buttons
Plug in USB
Plug in battery
The phone will then immediately enter download mode.
People need to be very careful when claiming what mode they are in and how they got there.
thanks for repeating what millions have already posted.....that doesn't work for a ton of people around here. Luckily, it does work for me, but in the case i get put in the same situation as those guys, i want to know how to get myself out. There are some people that know what they are talking about and still can't get into download mode, and yes, that is including adb reboot download
just because it works for you doesnt mean it works for everyone
I agree. I want to know just in case that happens to my phone one day. I refuse to think that without the 3 button option your phone can be hard bricked. Worst case some has to figure out a JTAG method.
And from reading a few threads, it looks like the build date is related to 3 button modes being disabled. Many users without 3 button have build dates between 8-11-2010 to 8-14-2010.

Not sure if you were responding to me or not, I simply wanted to point out the difference between recovery mode and DL mode as I see plenty of posts where someone is trying to use odin but can't get into "recovery mode". I don't doubt that there are phones that won't work with the hardware buttons.
Welp, count me in as having a brand new Captivate that will not go into Recovery or Download mode. I've tried all the suggestions and stickies, as well. Its like the phone simply ignores button presses while starting up. I bricked my phone while attempting to reverse the lagfix. No idea how I managed that. It now will only boot to the AT&T splash screen... over and over. At least, I'm able to exchange it today as I just brought it home yesterday. I'm going to try boot into recovery before I leave the store with the replacement. Although, my fear is the "bad batch" from manufacturing is actually the new "anti-xda haxor" safe guard from Samsung.

I was in the same boat as you...both phones so far won't go into recovery or dl unless adb'ed... have had the same fear as you. However... sister's captivate goes into dl mode just fine. Got them both at the same time...
Let's hope there's some workaround for this somewhere down the road.
Those of you that are missing 3 button recovery and download mode, if your phone is working do this,
go to the phone keypad, dial *#*#197328640#*#* from there it will pull the service menu, go to Version Info, SW Version, READ ALL SW VERSION
Look at the line labeled RF CAL DATE.
Mine for example is, RF CAL DATE 07-11-2010 and my buttons work.
It looks like phones with an RF CAL DATE between 8-11-2010 and 8-14-2010 have the button problems. I just want to find as much data as I can to verify or not-verify this.

Interesting. That means so far, the earliest i have seen is 8-11-2010 and yours is the latest. Looks like that was a bad week at the Cappy factory.
This is what I was talking about. I was in the middle of Odin3, going back to stock so I could take it back and do the "manufacturer defect" thing to get a new one, and out of no where, I didn't touch anything, nothing was unplugged, but my phone's screen went black, and it rebooted itself to the "phone+!+computer" screen. Anyone wanna give me some tips to maybe get them to replace my phone without looking at it, for the same "manufacturer defect" reason?
Oh, and by the way, my phone is one of the unlucky ones. So I can't boot into download mode. Period.

[Q] Security Locked Galaxy Conundrum

Hi guys,
I honestly thing that this is a unique situation. I have done a lot of searching, not just here but on Googlez as well, and no one seems to present a solution for me.
I have a Galaxy S that I received yesterday. I thought this was going to be a new hand set but it has been used. I know this because the previous user has set a pattern lock that I don't know on it.
So I have been trying to wipe this phone so that I can use it. I have tried a lot of avenues and yet nothing has worked. Here is what I have tried:
Reboot Into Recovery Mode : I believe I have tried every button combination to get into the recovery/maintenance mode so I can select wipe. However, when I try a combination (for example holding vol down and power) the phone gets to the initial boot logo, goes black, shows the same logo again, goes back, and repeats this in a loop until I let go of one of the buttons. When I do that it boots normally.
So this seems to indicate that the recovery mode on this phone is broken. Anyone else have any ideas with this bit?
ADB : Ok, so I turn the phone on to the lock screen. Then I plug in the USB cable to the computer. First, the device drive unsuccessfully installs on Win 7 every time. Then I fire up CMD, navigate to my ADB folder, and run 'adb devices' this just returns an empty list of devices attached.
I assume that based on the results of ADB that 'debugging via usb' is not turned no. I cannot turn this on because I'm locked out. Anyone know a way round this?
Special Code : Apparently there's a special code that can be entered on these Galaxy S devices when in the phone normally to wipe it. You have to enter this code via the Dialer (my mate tells me the code is '*2767*3855#'). I can't get to the normal dialer because I'm locked out so I try and use the Emergency Dialer. However, this proves unsuccessful as the phone just tells me that the code is not an emergency number.
At the moment I cannot see a way to fix this phone. It is impossible to find who used this phone before me.
Any ideas are welcome.
Before anyone Calls BS on this "Stolen Phone" its not and it is legit i can verify that the phone is legit and defiantly not stolen.
If I bought a "new" phone which is actually a "used" phone, I would return it!
And if it is legal, that should not be the Problem.
Anyway:
For the normal way to unlock the phone if you forgott your pattern you need the gmail account.
Without adb or 3-button-mode your phone is kind of useless.
He is just doing the combo wrong if you ask me. Hold the buttons until you see the initial bootscreen and then let go. If it doesn't work, 3 key combo might indeed be disabled
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
It was not purchased it was given as a competition and there was nothing stipulating that the handset would be new.
Obviously the competition handset had been used as a demo before being given out as a prize and they had forgot to factory reset the handset before giving it out.
Problem is Gmail, lock pattern, adb (doesn't seem to work as usb debug must have been left of) , and recovery wont work by the looks of things. Also tried to call the handset and press back button but must have updated FW
The people who held the comp have been notified but obviously where there is an android problem you guys know your onions so we ended up posting here.
I was just about to say the same thing as Kenneth. This is indeed a device won through a competition with Samsung them selves.
What combinations of buttons are talking about? I've tried and read about a lot, but would like to what you guys think the combination should be.
Any combination does seem to do the same thing though:
Hold down till the logo appears the release = Normal Boot
Hold down till the initial logo changes to a black screen = Normal Boot
VolUp+Home+Power is the one i am talking about
Wait until u get the white text logo and release as soon as you see it. If it doesn't work, combo is broken and the phone will indeed be useless until you can get the right pattern
You should try it like this and stick to the order!
Hold Volume up + Home (sqaure bottun in the midle) + Power on
When Galaxy S (white on black) appears you can release all buttons. It should go to recovery, if not this mode is disabled on your phone.
Even so I would try to swap it! If it is from Samsung itself that should not be a Problem at all.
OH... MY... DAYS!
Ok! The three button combination, and then releasing it as soon as the logo appeared, worked. I have successfully wiped the phone and am in.
Great advice guys. Thanks.
Thanks from me as well quick response and always awesome knowledge.
Oddly enough the combinations from vodafone uk and others were different so you guys are amazing.
Cheers Kenny

[Q] Bricked my Tab...please help!

Hello
I was in the process of updating the firmware of my 'brand new' tab, when for some reason, the PC crashed and it all hung. The tab went all blank and now Odin doesnt detect the tab either. What do I do? How can I get the tab back into the mode that Odin can detect? Please help!
1. Did you put the Tab in 'Download Mode' using the Power & Vol Down buttons first?
2. Did you first terminate Kies from your PC's System Tray before running Odin?
1. Yes. After selecting the files in Odin, I did put the tab in download mode using the Power & Vol down button & Home button. That doesnt work any more. Neither does the Power + Vol up button
2. I didnt terminate Kies before running Odin. I didnt know I was supposed to do that.

If you did not terminate Kies first then that is 100% the problem.
Try it ....
Thanks for that info..but how do I get the Tab to get into download mode now? It doesnt seem to respond to anything I do! It really fits into the description of a brick now!
Some machine's also require a third button (as in on the Galaxy S) by using the Back button as well.
The tab doesnt have any other hardware buttons..just the power button and the volume control. All other buttons are sensors (like the galaxy S)...
By the way..i really appreciate your help!
No problem but I do have to shoot out for about an hour....
Re the 'Back button'. Yes, I know it's not a hardware button but just as on the Galaxy S it needs the back button to complete the Recovery/Download modes.
The Tab has been reported in some countries to also want the same.
What country are you using and I should be able to tell you if you need this third button or not.
If you can not get into Recovery/Download mode and the electric mains switch on didn't work either then yes, you really do have a problem.
Again, let me know the country specific you are using the machine on as if you end up having to send the Tab to a service centre you may find the Tab is no longer under Warranty.
Samsung got wise to the rooting as it was causing all manner of problems with returned units.
In the end they issued a newsletter to all service centres.
You can read that newsletter here ~ Samsung Newsletter to Service Centre's ~ Rooting Voids Warranty
Oops. Getting a little worried now....
I bought the tab from Dubai. Thats the reason I wanted to update the firmware. It has a lot of apps that I am not really interested in.
If you can't get into recovery or download mode you are stuffed.
I would try contacting your nearest service centre and see what they have to say.
Thanks for your help. I will keep trying....

I just described the restore button combo procedure here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9853737&postcount=12
For download mode do the same, but instead of volume up use volume down... That's it.
EDIT: saw you did that before. Sorry! Can you get into restore mode?
Let me summarize what I have done till now..
1. Plugged the tab to power via socket
2. Tried Home + Vol Up + power button - no response ..screen is black
3. Tried Home + Vol down + power button - no response..screen is black..
in both the cases I kept the buttons pressed in for minimum 30 secs..
I am NOT aware of a 'restore mode' ..could you please xplain?

That would be the mode you would have entered when step 3 would have succeeded. I think your Tab is really bricked. The scenario described is typical a scenario that can result in a brick. All I can do is show some compassion Sorry.
This is not good..not good at all!
Thanks for your help anyway...
Just got back.....
As I mentioned previously your only option now is to contact the nearest Samsung Service Centre and explain to them you tried to carry out a firmware update but the phone is no non-operative.
See what they say about it.... If you are in luck and they can't see you have tampered with the device then it should be covered under warranty.
When I contacted them here in the UK they told me if I brought my Galaxy S in they would fix it there and then... I opted out though as I could not get over to see them. I was fortunate in that the Recovery and Download modes were still working. Your case however is different, in that with out these two modes it is impossible to get the Tab activated.
I know it's not good news but honestly, providing you can get down to a centre they should be able to sort you out.
Yep, just done the same to mine also..totally dead, trying to flash JMA !
Take it back to the store you got it from and plead total ignorance, that's what I am going to do...
Thats precisely what I did...lets see if they can help...
My tab is back! They were able to revive my tab. Now to try again...

[Q] The phone screen turns all green when starting but doesn't freeze.

Sorry friends, I am a newbee and seems I have done a stupid thing on the first hour I got my phone. [It should be reported to the Guinness World Records!]
I tried to check all the combinations of different keys pressed together. The one that got me stuck was – Volume Up + Volume Down + Power. What happens?
The screen turns all green but doesn't freeze. That means, the phone is not bricked but something happened to the display.
I still hear that it works playing the starting music. When I press power to close it, I try to guess where is the place of "Power Off" on the screen, I press it and the phone plays the "Good Bye" music and closes.
If I remove the battery, put it again and press Power, it enters again into a "greenish display" state.
Somebody can help me with any solution to get out of this situation?

Can you get the phone into download mode? (volume down, home + power). If you can you can try reflashing the firmware through odin. You could also try taking the battery out and leaving it awhile, but if I'm honest I have never heard of this problem before so am only suggesting the methods I would try. Otherwise give samsung a call and get them to sort it, I would imagine they'll be ok... Good luck!!

Thanks Nagrom78 for your efforts to help me.
I have tried what you have suggested and with no success. I fill in my fingers that it continued to work for a while and seems it is waiting for an input but I don't know the sequel of the keys and which keys I have to press.
I have also tried to do a Factory Reset to resolve the problem. Have you tried to do things blindfolded? It's like working in total "blindness". The phone shows a bright blank green screen and you have to guess what has been written so you could carry out the instructions it gives.
I followed the "Step by Step Instructions to Restore the Galaxy S Factory Setting", as following:
------------------------------------------------------------
1.Turn the device off, or if the device is halting, you can remove the battery and put it back again.
2.Simultaneously, hold the volume down button and press the power button.
3.Menu will pop-out containing the option Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock.
4.In this case choose Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button.
5.Then press and release the power button.
6.Here you need to confirm your decision, to choose YES press Volume Up button or NO by pressing down button.
Choosing YES will erase all data including apps and games installed; if you choose YES then the erasing process will start. After erasing process finish, the phone will automatically reboot and turn back on with default factory setting.
-----------------------------------------------------------
…. But it didn't does anything. When the phone is supposed to start the process I hear [and fill a vibration] but after waiting more than 20 minutes seeing no reboot, nothing at all, I closed the phone! I suspect they skipped a step in the instructions or I have waited a too short time.
By the way, do you know how long should take the restoring process?
This is the last try before sending back to support
This is my last try before sending the phone back for support.
Somebody has a brilliant suggestion to fix the problem?
Does somebody know the email support address of Samsung UK?
I believe it should be: "[email protected]".

From what you say I guess you didnt try odin yet.by pressing power+down+home then it should go in download mode and let you do the work with odin.so download odin, open it in the pc,press the buttons on phone and connect the usb.if you see yellow in odin then its connected to the phone.if it connected you can probably fix it...

What you're describing isn't what I've heard of before. Take a video or a photo of what's happening?
What did you do to the phone?
Going into download and flashing the phone should fix it I guess.

It seems you haven't read all my explanations. Never mind I"ll repeat them shortly, I know you want to help me:
I go into download mode (volume down, home + power). I hear the phone works (the vibration is on) but I don't see anything. I see only a bright blank green screen. It's like been blindfolded! I don't know the sequel of the keys and which keys I have to press to pass all the process (including Odin that I haven't yet installed). I have to guess what instructions I get. I don't even know where in the screen I have to press!
I suspect I have done a short circuit of the screen and I"ll have to send it back to Samsung Support.

Power button all of the sudden stopped working

So I have a major problem. My power button on my phone stopped working out of nowhere. I went to put my phone on the charger last night, my hand was pressed against the power button, so as normal the Reboot / Recovery / Shutdown menu popped up. After I couldn't get my power button to work at all. When my phone would sleep, I'd have to pull the battery out and put it back in (strangely, my Cappy would turn on by itself once I put the battery in). From there, I figured out how to reprogram the hard keys, so I used root explorer to get into the system folder on my internal SD and I remapped the 'Volume Up' key to work as the power key, so now I have a working power key. The only problem is, is I can't flash anything now.. well, I can, but since I no longer have a Volume Up key, I can't boot into D/L mode or into Recovery if something goes wrong during flashing. My phone also freezes on shutdown when I use the new remap. So I'm not sure what is going on with it. This is really troublesome, I was considering paying the $399 and getting the Galaxy Nexus GSM from Google and putting my SIM card in it, since it works with AT&T, but I really don't want to buy a new phone.
Any help at solving this and getting the normal power button working again would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Edit: I am running ICSSGS[RC4.1], if anyone needs to know the ROM. I am using whatever the stock kernel is that comes with it.
Make or buy a Jig (see my sig below for links) and Odin or Heimdall back to a Stock i897 Firmware, KK4 was the latest GB (see Dev Forum One Click Sticky Thread). See if that fixes the problem.
If not, then see here... Samsung Captivate Power Button Repair . This is a reliable and trust worthy company to do this job and more.-- (see here for references, etc. ). The guy who runs this biz is known as connexion2005 on XDA.
I'm sorry this happened to you, it's a bummer when hardware dies.
If you do this I am in no way responsible for your phone.
two options:
#1
follow the teardown guide here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022
and see if there's any crap messing with the contact for the power button. if there is clean the crap out and re install everything.(my brother fixed his button this way)
#2 if the first way doesn't work
go here and but a new power button module.
http://www.globaldirectparts.com/Samsung-Captivate-i897-Replacement-Repair-Parts-s/6412.htm
or search other sites for a power button
and order yourself a new power button module and re install it.
follow the teardown guide here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740022
and see if you can find out a way to replace your power button.
I've taken my phone apart many times it's pretty easy, just be extremely careful, once again I am in no way responsible for any damage YOU cause.
hope it works! let me know! just be careful, it's really not that hard though.
It is not a good sign when HW faults. In General section there's also a thread on remapping Search button as Power. I'm going to include it in my future ROM - good use for useless Search button.
