[Q] Phone calling random numbers - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I've been lurking and reading on the forum for a while but haven't had a need to post yet. I've had my phone rooted since the first week I got it and I haven't had any issues.
I rooted my sister's and she hasn't had any problems. My mom didn't want me to root her's so I did the Sprint update then the HTC update to .6 and then the problems started.
It wouldn't install anything, there were no apps in the drawer, wouldn't let me back anything up. So I downgraded it to .5 and rooted it using Regaw's method and flashed Fresh 2.3.3.
She calls me the next morning because apparently overnight her phone was calling random numbers in the same area code. I flashed ZenHeroFX 2.0 and the problem went away until yesterday.
Now I guess her phone was calling out of state numbers. Now it was doing this just sitting out, not in her purse or pocket. She barely has any apps installed on it, surely nothing out of the ordinary.
I searched even other android phone's forums and the only thing I could come up with was Amazon mp3, which I had removed, and being plugged into a non-OEM charger. She generally charges it over usb with the original cable but the wires are pulling out.
So any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

Wow, weird, never heard of that before. So it does this even when she's not holding it or touching it? But it only happens when it's on the charger overnight?
Sounds like that could be a clue. Could be a bad charging cable that causes surges or something like that. Maybe buy a new charger/cable?
Or possibly just put the phone in Airplane mode just while it's charging overnight so the radio signals are disabled?
What about putting a lock pattern onto the touchscreen?
Have you called Sprint tech support? What have they said? (knowing some Sprint techs, they might be clueless as well)
Don't know for sure....just trying to think of several things to suggest.

Apparently it was doing it while charging and not. She does have a pattern lock on it.
Something else weird is that while on Fresh the calls would show up in the call log. Lately it has not.

[Q] Why my Galaxy S locks up?! (Comatose Syndrome on going investigation)

Hi Guys,
Could someone tell me why my 2 weeks old Galaxy S (Service Provider: Bell) turns it self off out of the blue?
It happend twice already, the phone was on my pocket, I pushed the on/off side botton and nothing happens, the screen is pitch black!!
This is an irritating issue as I'm forced to physically take out the phone from the case and remove the battery and put it back on to turn on the phone.
Does anybody whats causing this issue? and how to fix it ?
Your help is much appreciated!
Cheers
Also, I was wondering if I do a factory reset to try solving the random shutting down problem, will I have to re-purchase all the apps I bought from the Market?
Send for warranty is needed I think

No, the info that you purchased the apps is stored in your Google account. So if you use the same Google account as you're using now as your primary account after reset, you can download all those apps for free. (Primary account is the Google account you first associated with the device.)
i had the same problem with 3 different bell vibrants. About 6 days ago, i bought a new sim card from bell for $5, and it has not happened since. I bought my phone from Bestbuy, but bought my new sim card from Bell store because perhaps the bestbuy sim cards are outdated. Hopefully it stays ok.
One thing i did notice was that when my phone would turn off by itself, it was always in an area where there was bad reception. Maybe a link.
I found that it happened when I installed a different launcher other than Touchwiz. I was using LauncherPro, uninstalled it and everything worked fine. I installed ADW and everything is fine so far.
I saw this thread yesterday and was thankful mine hadn't developed this issue. And then last night after about two hours idle time, my SGS switched itself off and the power button wouldn't respond at all. The only way to revive my beloved phone was to do a hard reset (i.e. removing the battery).
For what it's worth, the only "mods" I've made are installing a handful of apps. No new launcher, no custom ROMs etc.
I'm tempted to give Voda a ring and ask for a new SIM. But this really smells more like a hardware fault to me. A faulty SIM shouldn't result in a handset switching itself off, I'd think...
i'v encountered smailar problem , first i thought my phone turned itself off, later i suspected some apps i'v installed ( setCPU, autokiller etc), after while and digging, i found that i'v installed "Android Tweak" , it has an option to disable screen dim, and i'v used that option, so i changed it back and the problem is gone.
in Spain we have the same problem and no solution by now

Mine just died again ten minutes ago. I guess it's a possibility, but considering the number of bugs that we're all discovering with the hardware and software, I'm suspecting it's yet another dodgy batch of phones from Samsung.
I just bought two Galaxy S and I am having same problems with both. I called Belll and they said they never had this kind of problem before. I had installed few apps and thought may be those apps were causing the problem, but even after deleting the apps..phones are powering off itself...
Did any one find the solution yet??
Same problem here, and from what i am hearing is becoming frecuent among galaxy owners. Im amazed something this important hasnt made the news , i mean, its a huge malfunction issue .
I had the same issue.
I called up Samsung support and they asked me to do a phone reset. I didn't try that, but I upgraded the firmware and it's gone now. I suspect resetting the phone will also solve the issue.
This happened to me for the first time today as I woke up and it wasn't dark outside. When I looked to see what time it was my phone (that I use as an alarm) was off!!
This is the first blemish on an otherwise outstanding experience. But it is a major one. I will assume that it is somehow related to something I've installed. But I'm not looking forward to figuring it out, since I've got a lot of apps

Good luck. I did a factory restore the other day to see if that would help. It didn't. Like you I use my SGS as an alarm... I woke up two hours late this morning because my phone had switched itself off in the middle of the night.
I'm currently waiting for a replacement handset. I'm not holding my breath that the new hardware won't have exactly the same bug though...
Mine started doing this yesterday...same with a bunch of coworkers that have the same phone. We think it may be related to bad reception.
Sigh
My phone just started doing this in the last couple of days.
I've also noticed sometimes it gets into a state of continuously saying "usb debugging connected" and then "usb connected" and just continuously keeps displaying those even though it has no usb cable anywhere near it..
Havent flashed the phone for about a week now and it was fine for 3-4 days after the flash so no idea what is going on..
Anyone else seen those usb messages? They come and go.. but it seems when they come its usually when my phone turns off..

Thats funny...because the only time it has happened to me is at work, where the phone is struggling for reception. It has turned off a total of about 8 times over 1 month. It has never turned off anywhere else (except one other time i was getting bad reception in the forest, and a few minutes later it was off)...strange

Can someone with 2.2 froyo update perform this check for me..."stay awake" gone?

Can someone with 2.2 froyo update perform this check for me..."stay awake" gone?
So I installed the new froyo update last night and I see one thing missing I liked which was on the 2.1. It had a feature called "stay awake" under the application settings I believe. Well I go to charge my phone for the first time since installing 2.2 and the screen stays on and never sleeps unless I press the lock button. This is only with the usb/charger plugged in.
Can someone verify theres is the same way please? I am thinking they either designed it this way or there is was a problem with my install? Not a big issue, just something I wanted to get clarification on. Thanks!
They did remove Stay Awake from every froyo I've looked at.
It's very easy to add it back. You have to decompile the Settings.apk and remove one line from the .smali files.

I had the same exact problem when I did my upgrade. I was worried about burning the screen and went looking for some fixes for it. You can edit the Settings APK like the above reply mentions Here.
You can also download some widgets to toggle it.
However in playing with the phone I did a couple of reboots, once witht he USB plugged in, (not sure that makes a difference) and noticed that the phone timed out like normal while it was plugged in so I left it alone after that.
Thanks for the replies guys. New twist to the story today. I left my "samsung" OEM charger(one that came with my Cappy) at work Friday so I went to AT&T to buy one. They didn't have an OEM samsung charger but only the AT&T branded micro usb ones so I picked one of those up.
Went home to plug it in, and the screen sleeps/turns off like normal. So now I'm thinking it has something to do with the charger being used? Interesting...
Also still reading up on all the stickies here on XDA on how to modify this phone from rooting/etc so can't quite get into that yet! =/
OK, Similar problem, hopefully someone can help. My phone used to stay on when plugged in (even with 2.2). Convenient since I frequently use it for GPS (Google maps and Google navigator). I tried to use it for GPS the other day, and it kept turning off. Looked for the setting to stay on when plugged in, and noticed it was gone.
Apparently some software I was using changed a setting somewhere. Any EASY way to switch the feature on and off? Can someone recommend a widget or utility to do it?

Google Nexus One random restarts

Hi all,
I've been having some random reboots w/ my N1. I got the ATT version w/ 2.3.3 Gingerbread (Latest OTA) Also happened while running Froyo
Not rooted, all stock.
Carrier Cable & Wireless Panama City, Panama
I have already wiped the phone via the security menu and via the recovery boot and doesn't work
I have tried to recreate the problem but I haven't been able to isolate to a particular application or moment that could cause the problem.
Could the 3G data connection cause the problem? I also read about overheating but the problem is completely random.
I would appreciate any tips.
Rob
Suggest you try running a log cat to help identify the issue...

Log
Alright here is the log.
My guess is that this is like when Windows creates the minidumps when you get a BSOD. Let me know what to look for and again thanks for all the assistance.
I think I might have traced the problem to the charger. If use the phone for browsing, youtube, FB, IM, email etc etc. I can open all the apps and use them w/o the phone restarting but as soon as I plug in the wall charger or USB data cable it starts restarting. I have to remove the battery and then put it back and power on and let it charge until full. While charging I can use some apps but I try not to use the phone that much since it might restart.
The phone is the usual warm when is charging so I doubt is overheating
Anyone having this kind of problem?
Giving up
Well after a few months trying to figure out what is going on with my GN1, I decided to call it quits and call HTC to get a replacement.
My guess is that since the problem happens mostly when the phone is charging it could be a overheating problem. The same thing happens when you have a portable or desktop computer with overheating problems, it either starts rebooting, becomes really slow or shuts down.
Lets see if the replacement works better or I will have to sell the phone and maybe go back to iOS. :-/

Phone won't turn on

Hey Everyone,
Just seeing if anyone might have a solution to my problem that I'm facing. I had rooted my phone when the root originally came out, and everything seemed to be working fine. I had been texting on my phone when it suddenly froze, I waited to see if it would come back, but it never did so I pulled the battery.
The phone originally booted to the M logo, but froze, after another battery pull the phone now won't turn on at all. As in it's not responding to the power button press at all. It's not being recognized by a computer, and there doesn't seem like much I can do.
Any suggestions out there? If my phone is bricked and can't even turn on, will a Verizon store know this? How could they?
thanks.
If u froze something like a system app that may have bricked it. Theres something u can flash which was a cracked version of an ota update that should fix it but u may not be able to receive official updates if u do that. Other option is to wait for an official sbf file

How can I flash something? There doesn't appear to be a way for me to access my phone. I can't get into restore or the bootloader.
What happens when you plug the phone into your charger(using the stock charger and cable)?
Nothing, no light, no anything
I actually haven't tried it in a situation like that so I can't give instructions :/

Just take the phone into Verizon and tell them it has stopped working. You don't have to go into any detail at all.

I think that might be what I do, I can't imagine they would have a way of knowing it's rooted if the phone won't even turn on, charge, or anything.
Thank you, btw.
Try taking out the battery and plugging it in to the wall without it in it. If it starts to boot, let it. Then replace the batter and plug it into the wall again and let it charge up. Happened to my Droid X before and I was able to get it working by doing this.
Tried this, but couldn't get it to work.
Took it to a Verizon store and they said they would send me a new one tomorrow, and then all I do is send mine in afterwards.
Is there a chance that after I send them my phone they could find out I rooted it? I'm worried they would charge me full price for the phone they sent me if they discover it.

Honestly the Magnuson-Moss act protects you in that VZW has to prove that rooting caused the phone to fail. However in practice you end up having to take them to court which is too costly and time consuming. But to answer your question yes they could pretty easily figure it out.
But to put it differently no one else that I've read about has had a failure like yours. People have bootlooped and such, but no one has just had nothing happen on power-up. It doesn't sound like you did anything other than root, which couldn't possible cause this. Freezing apps and deleting system apps only causes force closes and bootlooping, you had neither.

Anyone else finding their Vivid to be really glitchy?

My Vivid does all sorts of crazy stuff. Sometimes when you flick the screen one way, it will flick 4 screen the other way. Sometimes when you press an icon on the home screen it will select the icon to the right. Some times when returning to the home screen i will get black bars along the sides of the home screen. Is anyone else seeing things like this with their vivd?
It also seems that as soon as you run an app like Pandora the phone slows a lot. No more smooth transition back to home screen.Instead I get a second of the black screen instead of that nice fade back to home. Its like the phone goes stupid as soon as you a running something. Is this phone really not that powerful?
By the way, I returned a phone for this already. This is the second phone running in the same way.
Not so cool.
You seem to be alone. Take that one back too. Inconvenient but you deserve better.

This is my 3rd phone.... i dont think they will take it back again ..
this is my first android phone from an iphone and to me it seems a little buggy, but my problems are in android and they dont happen often.
i clicked on the messaging app once and it opened my browser
2 apps randomly got deleted when i rebooted
dropbox app was there but the app wasnt, so i had to uninstall it and reinstall it
it froze on my once the second day i got it
this might be normal for android, but its frustrating coming from an iphone. the problems might be user error clicking the wrong thing, but in my book that still falls on android for making a hard os to follow for noobs. maybe now that im learning more of android im able to stop problems or prevent them but your problems sound weird seeing as its your third phone

The problems you are having are not very typical either. My main suggestion would be to check your Micro SD Card for the app thing. Sounds like the card is glitching out to me or you got a phone that has a Micro SD Card reader flaw.
Regardless though to the OP sounds like where ever you are getting the phone from got a Bad Batch of phones shipped to them. As for return even if it is your third one if you are still having issues and still withing 30 days keep returning until you get a fully functional phone I would say.

I experienced a few issue with reboots and jittery transistion the first few days I had the phone, but after that it is smooth sailing. I've been with android since I installed it on my HTC HD2 and was with WINMO before that. I can understand there would be a bit of learning curve coming from iOS. I actually flirted with the idea of getting the iPhone 4s, but settled on HTC Vivid instead, better media managment and couldn't get over the small screen size of the 4s, espcially when my proir phone was the 4.3-inch HTC Inspire.

As malickie suggested in his post, there may be a bad batch of phones delivered to stores in your area. I would return it and by it online, as I assume those may be delivered from a central warehouse or distrubtion center.
My phone acts that when when I'm using it with it plugged in to a wall charger. Strange...
i've found that my phone sketches out on me when plugged in to an AC power source. things like random screen activity and button presses because of the power supply. doesn't matter what combo of cords and adapters i use, it still wigs out on me. when it's plugged in to USB it works flawlessly. i noticed i had the same problem with my old iPhone 4 and 4s. same deal as now, works perfectly on USB charge. i think it has to do with some power circuits in older houses because it doesn't happen in some places, and in other places the intensity isn't as bad.
are these issues happening when your device is plugged in?
if not, then it is certainly a device problem because it shouldn't go bonkers at the slightest touch. regardless of how many times it happens, i would keep returning it. if they keep giving you defective equipment, then the onus is upon your cell company to provide you with working equipment. i can personally vouch for the power and functionality of the Raider (here in Canada) so i think you may have gotten the bad luck of being stuck in the middle of a bad batch of stock. try going to a different store and see if one from there makes a difference.
This may sund dumb, but any chance a certain wallpaper would be glitchy? I changed the wallpaper today to a more demanding live walpaper, and opened up every app i could find with pandora streaming and gps navi going and the phone was running very smooth still.
I wonder....... ill report back in a few days to see how it goes.
It's entirely possible you e been using one that has bugs, so if it fixed it then that may be the culprit.
See if the issue repeats without the LWP and go from there

OP, i think i was able to duplicate your problem... I used a cheap micro usb cable last night to charge my vivid, while it was plugged in it started doing crazy stuff, the touch was way off etc... i tried a different cheap micro usb charger and was able to duplicate the problem. I then tried the OEM charger as well as a motorola micro usb charger and had no problems. So i would check the charger you are using..
interesting.. i will be keeping a better eye on when i have problems. Allthough with this new wallpapers once in a while its not super duper smooth going back to homescreen, i have not seen any of these crazier glitches in the past 24 hours...
Yes
See my separate thread on the HTC Sense and Location Service problems.
Patience is wearing thin, and I'm getting ready to return it before the 30 return period expires.
Mine has done it twice while I've been trying to unlock the screen with the power button on top. I press it and nothing, then press again, and again, then the phone would reboot. I also sent the logs to HTC.

I've had similar results under different charging circumstances as well.
In two of my cars I have power inverters that plug into the cigarette lighter sockets. With both of my OEM HTC chargers, as well as two different Samsung chargers, the phone goes haywire. Touch is sometimes completely off - if it even registers - and there's noticeable lag. However, the same chargers plugged into any other normal household outlet do not seem to affect the phone at all. What I took particular note of was that how when the engine is running, the phone acts up. But when it's off and the inverter is pulling straight from the battery, all is well.. perhaps the phone does not like running off of alternating current, although the current a car's alternator produces is still rectified into DC. Weird.
Me too

Man, I thought I was the only one. It's kinda annoying.
My vivid has been screwing up bad all day. I was in the middle of trying to perma-root when it rebooted itself... Loaded up to the ATT beginning message and instantly shot to black screen, buttons didn't work. I pulled out the battery and booted it up again and when it got to the att screen a message came up saying it couldn't load the OS. I pulled the battery and the sim out and let it sit for about 10 mins. Booted it up for the third time and finally it loaded the home page. But now the status bar has been failing and my data drops in and out all the time. I think I might have to install a new OS

Sorry I didn't know what it was called, I'm extremely green on HTC lol. As far as the phone goes it had a random reboot during the temp root loading and wouldn't turn on.
You should feel glad though cause I was gonna call it iOS at first =p

My first attempts at rooting gave me the same status bar error. Hold off on rooting for a few and restart the phone a couple of times, letting it boot completely and then properly using the restart option in the power menu. Then try again.. it took me seven tries before the status bar errors and glitchiness went away, and it finally rooted.
