Hi all,
Bear with me while I explain my case.
I have a friend in Texas that has an Android phone and I'm in England, so, all the help I can gather I will email her and if would be better if the "tutorial" have pictures if you know what I mean as she is not at all a tech person, and she is older than me !
She likes her Android phone and she said it is a G2. I don't have a clue as to the Android version and asking her this is a waste of time; it is definitely not rooted; did I mention that she is not techy? The fact is that she says the text (font?) on the interface and everywhere else is too small for her and she cannot find a way to change the font. Is it a possibility with Android? Her phone provider says it is not or they don't know.
Any help appreciated.

Me!

There is no such thing as the G2 in the states (There is in Europe, but it's actually the HTC Hero), so I'm assuming she is talking about the HTC Magic (or here it is called the MyTouch 3G). If this is her phone, she has 1.6 (If it's the Hero, she has 1.5).
As far as I remember, there is an app called "Spare Parts" in the Market which allows you to adjust the font size, but there were problems where it would return to default size at some time (Not sure if it was when you closed the app or rebooted the phone).
@JAguirre1231
Thanks for your input. You are probably right about the 3G model thing. I will mention "Spare Parts" to her and see how she gets on with it.
After posting I've decided to search the Android section here for themes but had the feeling that everything that is done here uses the premise that everyone roots their phones but that does not happen out there in the real world where not everybody is a geek or tech savvy.
I've found some very interesting stuff using Metamorph but rooting is not an option unfortunatelly and I don't have time to dig deep right now.
Cheers!

Rooting these days can be as simple as putting a file on your sdcard, booting up and installing an app.
Unfortunately, yes, if you want a full theme, you will have to root your phone. The best you can do without a rooted phone is install themes on an alternate launcher (which will slow down the phone since you will have two launchers running).
PLEASE HELP ME! my phone is "rooted" with 3 third-party apps my BF installed!
I noticed that my nexus 6 was acting funny, and since my boyfriend purchased this phone for me- he set the entire thing up. The day it arrived, he plugged my phone into his laptop and started typing away at what looked like a black screen and a boxy white font with a bunch of rom codes etc(at this point, i was totally clueless and oblivious to what he was doing)...
Then, he would sporadically bring up specific texts that i had sent, and at times would randomly pinpoint specific addresses and times and asked me about them(mind you, they were my friends homes) which left me to wonder "how the hell did he even know about that text or specific location unless my phone is hacked??"
so, i took my phone to a specialist who confirmed that my phone was rooted with a custom ROM along with 3 third-party apps "kernel adiutor", "pure nexus", and "xda labs".
Once i called tech support for my phone, they said they couldn't help me because they're third party apps that are not legal to use in the first place.
long story short, his mom confirmed recently that he in fact has my phone hacked. can somebody please give me insight on the apps he installed and the purpose they serve?? what kind of access/capabilities does he have now that my phone is rooted even if i restore my phone???
Kernel Auditor Xda labs and pure nexus are not phone hacking apps Xda lab is app by xda community and Kernel Auditor is for tweaking the kernel and i think Pure Nexus is a Custom Rom for the Nexus
If you want to get rid of this you can ask service centre to flash Stock Rom of Nexus phone
Sent from my SM-A9000 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Download a factory image from here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Follow the instructions on the webpage. Doing this will wipe your phone and put it back to 100% stock.
Also lol @ this:

You have a very *very* serious problem.
As khanboyz007 says, the apps you mention are entirely pukka, totally normal, nothing suspicious.
But...
If you can't trust your boyfriend so much that you have to post for help from anonymous strangers, then your problem is far deeper than your Nexus 6. From the technical side of your description, he's done nothing at all wrong, but from reading between the lines you don't trust him, and *that's* a dealbreaker.
Why are you asking us instead of him? Give him a chance to explain. Maybe there's nothing more sinister than you (clearly without any technical knowledge... sorry...) don't have your phone password-protected and he's just looked at your texts - in itself a breach of trust, but still not justifying posting in a public forum to strangers.

I wouldnt say that at all. If he can tell where she has been and what text she is sending then he installed one of the many monitor apps onto her phone which is illegal.
My advise would be to completely wipe your device. Flash a stock rom and dont let him touch your device.
As for your personal life no one can or has any right to say anything about that. Do what you think is best.
If he knows the locations you've been at its possible he has your google+ share location set where it's shared with him. Or possibly he had set up an email for you on it and is signing into it to track your location. As far as the apps you mentioned they are %100 percent legal, most carrier don't know anything about rooting or custom Roms and will not give you adequate advice. But as they said, you can just flash the stock image, make your own Gmail to sign in or make sure to change your Gmail password. After you do make sure that that you put a password on your device that he doesn't know.
"then he installed one of the many monitor apps onto her phone"
Isn't that what I said...? No trust. This isn't in any way a technical question - it's about their relationship.
And since I've seen your many posts here over the years I know you've got a fair amount of life experience, in which case I can assume that you know of Occam's Razor - the simplest explanation is likely to be the correct one, and the simplest explanation here is not that he's installed a monitoring app but is simply looking at the phone. I stand by my comments.
"no one can or has any right to say anything about that"
Yes, I agree, it would be none of my business - *if* she hadn't asked for my advice (as well as yours).
If she has so little trust in her partner, and has asked for advice (technical or otherwise), then the answer has to be "Look very carefully at your relationship".
(P.S. To avoid the inevitable "sexist" comments, yes, I've assumed it's a female poster, but I'm aware that there are alternatives).
To be honest I think it might be a moot point as he is most likely part of this forum and has seen this post.
Then he's got the message...
Or this is just a prank. Like I'm getting private messages from people who haven't even posted yet to fix their phones.

Yes, that same thought had occurred to me. I give the benefit of the doubt unless there's a clear sign that it's a joke, and this one does come close to the edge...
A lot of effort for a not-funny joke though. It would be good if the OP provides some feedback - I do get very fed up with people asking for advice, which is given maybe by half a dozen people who have taken the time and trouble to provide it, only for the OP to vanish into the ether without so much as a "thank you" button press.
Step one, flash the phone back to stock using the links provided eariler posts.
Step two, dump the loser - he is too controlling, and this will never change...
Now that the personal advice has been given, let's bring this thread back to troubleshooting device issues, not relationship issues . Thanks for your cooperation.

Your friend has set up your phone the same way as he should do for himself.
There nothing wrong with rooting and the apps you mentioned.
My idea is that ask him very friendly to flash the latest official stock Rom.
Tell him that you prefer the official rom of Google.
Because you want official support when there is something wrong. And you don't need root acces because you only use 'normal' apps.
As everything there are disadvantages.
A rooted phone allows you to install layers. That makes it possible to choose dark themes. And that's important when you need a better battery life.
I Bet he's using Cerberus. Go into your settings>apps, select to include system apps. You'll be looking for a app name: system framework. If you see this He is tracking you using Ceberus, . This app/service is pretty awesome. I was able to track my phone down, see the texts sent, turn the mic on and listen to where my phone was at. .
Like everyone said flash a new rom. clean slate. Then dump dude, there should be no need for that crap.
Here's the link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lsdroid.cerberus&hl=en

to me, a "specialist", it sounds like he did you a favor, by rooting your device, and adding apps that you will need to control your own phone. your "own" i say because otherwise you are just using someone elses device, that you happened to pay for with your money. so, instead of posting a pissy thread, id do a little more research on how to control your own phone, and then tell him thank you.
oh, btw, just because the apps arent from the play store, it does not make them illegal to use, at all. you can use whatever app you want, from wherever you want, LEGALLY.
I'm coming round to istperson's point of view - this thread is beginning to look more and more like an elaborate pointless hoax, and not a very funny one.
There are far too many of these threads where people ask a question and then disappear without the courtesy of a sign-off or even a "thank you". Very discouraging, and makes me less keen on spending my time here trying to help timewasting ingrates...
I'm gonna close this thread for now. If the OP has anything else to add they can contact me again to reopen it.
Not all apps are legal. It really depends on where you are living. As an example. Things like keyloggers, call recorders (depending on local laws) screen recorders and things of this nature are completely legal in some countries like China, while being completely illegal in other places in the world.
Also installing tracking software of any kind on someone's device is also illegal.
We have to remember that many people search for help on something, reg to the forum to get the answer and dont come back until they have another issue. This is becoming far more common as of late.
Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum, and new to all of this, so please forgive my ineptness and general cluelessness.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 Active (AT&T version) model SM-G870A. It was running 5.1.1 but was rooted. It also had debugging checked.
I was getting really irritated with all the bloatware that was installed by Samsung and AT&T because I hated opening my apps drawer and having to wade through panel after panel of useless apps. Not only this, but they ate up far too much of the space and resources on my device. And, just out of principal, the phone belongs to me. I paid cash for it, I don't have any kind of contract with AT&T, so why should they force me to have all their useless junk on my phone?
At first, I would have been happy just debloating it. So I used Dr.Fone to root it, and then I attempted to get rid of all the unwanted apps using Debloater by Gatesjunior. Long story short, I've now managed to get my phone into bootloop. Since then I've tried the different solutions recommended on XDA and nothing has worked so far for me.
At this point, I'd prefer just to be able to flash a custom rom for my phone, but honestly, if I can't do this I would be happy just to go back to where I was before this whole ordeal started... me with a functioning phone (albeit, full of useless bloatware). It would be horrible to admit defeat to AT&T, but I just want a working phone now
Any advice?
Thanks.
Bump.
Nobody? The post has gotten 59 views so far. I mean, I know it's not a hot new model S8, but can nobody point me in the right direction? I'd really appreciate it as this is the only phone I have, I like it despite all the bloatware it had, and I can't afford another. Or is it only worth throwing in the bottom of some drawer to collect dust?
Thanks.
111 views now and still no suggestions or advice. Seems there are loads of helpful people replying to other requests for help. I'm not sure what's different about this.
Read read read .... There is currently NO root method for the active this is stated over and over on this forum . You should be able to use Odin and flash a stock non rooted firmware ....again there are several posts and threads explaining this in detail ....good luck .... Do some searching and reading before making posts whining about no one helping you ....
I did read read read as you say. I did lots of searching, lots of reading, and tried lots of the suggestions (including flashing factory firmware with Odin) and nothing's worked. I also said in my original post that I'm not a phone enthusiast, I don't know anything about this stuff. I thought the point to the site was that there were advanced users and developers who wouldn't mind helping out the clueless. But no, everything I've read is quite cryptic in its terminology as to be basically opaque to most but it's spoke of in a way that's clearly meant for an audience with a similar knowledge base. I mean, I just wanted all the extra crap off my phone, I wasn't hoping to hack it into The Superphone, I got in over my head, and I realize I should have just left it alone. Don't open a watch unless your job is fixing watches. I understand that this is a site supported mostly by niche enthusiasts. Phones are your fun (which I don't get, but to each their own, mine is cameras and bicycles, so I understand having a passion other people don't get) but to most people phones are just something they have. If you're knowledgeable about this stuff, then I get why you might not understand why it's confusing to people like me.
In short, thanks for nothing.
P.S. - It IS rootable. I rooted mine. It is rooted right now. It's rootable using Dr.Phone. I mentioned this, so why don't you read? I could go on and on about the lame traits of users of niche interest sites (including photographers and cyclists, they can be so irritating) one being that of false authority... but why bother when I'll just receive another boring snide response (another lame trait of some enthusiasts which they seem to get no end of satisfaction from "Umm, there's this thing called the search function... duh".)
Lol enjoy your junk phone ...
Yeah, that's about what I expected. Thanks for proving my point. Enjoy your lame hobby.
I've had the note8 for about 3 months-ish. It's been great, only thing is I am getting SICK of having no control over which apps are doing what in background, (stock stuff spying/sending data home etc).
I was just pushed the oreo update from my carrier and it looks like its slightly slower now, guess this is all part of the planned obsolescence to get us to buy new phones.
The questions for the experts here :
-How difficult/dangerous is it to root note8 with knox, and have it come out successful?
-How do you possibly find a trustworthy rom that wont be loaded with viruses/rootkits
-Is there a gold standard guide out there for security on rooted note8's (how to setup firewalls/ iptables. with knox in the equation)
I dont want to overload this post with stuff when I'm the one holding my hat out here for advice. I've googled for weeks, can't seem to find any straight answer. No one seems to have any solid hands on experience with this (rooting/knox/security). I just know that the note8 with all the knox parts makes it different from any other phone ive had.
THANK YOU.
I suppose I should also mention that I am looking for something that will be the most secure/offer the most flexibility in maintaining privacy.
Ideally I would love something that just has a homescreen that shows all network data events/history. Probably doesnt exist, but thats my mindset about all this.
If you want security and the ability to stop stuff running in the background (slowing down your phone and using your battery), you don't want to root.
Just install one of these apps:
1. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdp.singleplay
or
2. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunkunsoft.packagedisabler
They allow you to disable apps you don't want or use (e.g. facebook). I use the first one. I know they are paid apps but they are worth the money.

Yea, I have heard of those. But I guess whenever I see a solution that involves me paying some person I dont know for them to put code on my phone, I always prefer to go the learn it myself route. Which is why I guess I am asking for some advice on rooting, I can handle doing it myself, I'm not entirely un-tech savvy. Just had a few general questions about rom/knox issues.

It's pretty straightforward to root, just read through the root threads and make sure you're familiar with all the steps.
I have never downloaded a rom from here with viruses and rootkits. Look at user feedback and install a virus scanner on your phone if concerned. For official firmware, try SamFirm or Sammobile.
You can use apps like AFWall+ from the Play Store but root is required for it to work. I don't know what you mean by "with Knox in the equation" though. Knox is something else entirely.

Yep, pretty familiar with finding roms/installing them (still weary of anything free, rootkits can be hidden anywhere these days). Only reason I specifically made a thread this time around is due to the knox security portion of the note8. I've heard it can complicate things when rooting note8, and I was unable to find much info from people on it (especially with recent version releases)
but thank you!

What model do you have? Rooting on Exynos with custom recovery will trip Knox counter and stop samsung pay/secure pass from working ever again. Most Snapdragon models have locked bootloaders though, and their root method doesn't affect Knox if I recall correctly (see SamFail thread though for that last one).

Do what you're happy doing.
Just one thing. Your logic is fatally flawed. You say you won't pay someone to provide a solution unless you have researched it first but you will however sacrifice security by rooting for free but you haven't researched it.
Your questions are all answered in this forum, you just need to use the search function. No need to create another 'how do I root and what are the advantages/disadvantages' thread.
Good luck.

Thanks for your reply, however practice makes perfect - can't get good at anything until you try.
As for searching this forum, maybe I should have been more specific when i said I googled. That meant I searched everywhere I knew of (including here) for any specific knox related rooting guides for the current note8 OS release. And since it just rolled out few days prior, I haven't found many first hand accounts/spoken to anyone who has attempted it. I will also add that i was hoping to hear some opinions about something that is specifically tailored to security/privacy. I guess I thought that was unique enough/not previously posted to warrant my own thread. But as you stated, perhaps my thinking is flawed.
Thank you!
The thing is, if you are so concerned about security issues, do not use ANY google related service/software, there you voluntarily give tons of pieces of info, but that includes amdroid itself, as it relies on google play services, as I see it, your best option for not having anything suspicious installed in your device is a plain feature phone, and a computer with the best protection you can buy/get

Yes, you couldn't be more right about that.
Unfortunately google and my work have not fully separated and probably wont anytime soon. Main reason i was wanting to root was to have some sort of control over my firewall/setup some iptables to limit the amount of trackers/bugs phoning home.
Rooting is the exact opposite to safety, that is why unbranded/generic/fake/etc are sold with root access out of the box, no restrictions whatsoever for anything

I'm not sure what you mean by "Knox-related rooting guides". That may be part of the confusion and why you can't find what you're looking for. You root the phone/OS, not Knox.

Well, I would somewhat agree with you there. But, I guess Im just sick of having no way to set my own firewall rules/ have control over my ports.
First of all hello from Germany. It is a sunny evening, and we're expecting 40 deg Celsius within the next days...
Well, on to the topic. I am an experienced software developer, I am a pretty much experienced Linux/Unix administrator, but I never bought a over-the-egde mobile phone bevore I've fallen in... well, not exactly love, but excitement with the MI 9. I know to patch kernel code, I know how to tune even Windows Server farms etc etc. But I am absolutely new to mobile pimping. So, stuff like alternative boot loaders, GCam, this, that, whatnot are completely new to me.
So....... what would be a good starter to learn about all this stuff? As we are walking on Linux grounds, I am pretty much aware of the fact that there will be no such stop-once-know-all thing like the Microsoft Developer Network where not only one question leads to the next, but also the answers are built on top of each other. But at least...? Some good starter that leads back to this forum later on when my knowledge may eventually will have become appropriate to understand all your geek speak? :good:
To be more precise, what I am looking for is like a simple newbie tuturial like:
In order to unleash the full power of your phone, you have to
1st Get yourself acquainted with these concepts and that terms. Read on here, there, and there.
2nd Do this as a starter. You'll need that. Read here.
3rd If you want to do this, first you have to do that and that. The pros are here and the cons are there. Read here about the quirks.
4th You can do a lot of more fancy things. Before you do so, look here and there. Also keep in mind that this and that are important.
5th If you really want to go further, read the following xda-developers threads: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G, then H, I, J...
Thank you very much indeed everyone who wants to share their ideas, hints, and knowledge!

Why sould I? That is my very question. All of you are like go unlocking, rooting, stuff. Perhaps you did not get the point. WHY? I am almost convinced to do so, but what would be THE reason? No Google spyware would be one reason, no crapware, adware would be another, more speed, no more footprints sent to some of US' greedy intelligence.

Sounds like you've answered your own question with valid reasons. But, you have to unlock bootloader in order to root/flash custom roms etc. It is required as a first step
And you can always relock bootloader
