Search Button No Longer Launches Search - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used titanium backup to uninstall my Google Search app to update to the new one in the market. But now when I press the search button while on my home screen nothing happens. If I long press it will open voice search and it still works in the browser but when I try to use it to search for something nothing happens? Know how I can get it back?

It's been covered in detail how to fix this. Search for the threads.

I have searched but couldn't find it which is why I'm posting here...

I don't know what fix RogerPodacter is referring to, but I've noticed a similar bug on my phone. If I hit the search button while on the home screen nothing happens, but if I hit the home button (even when already on the home screen) then hit the search button it works. Weird...

Soft Reset app

Does anyone know if there is a soft reset/restart app available?
I am checking out a bunch of themes and hitting "Menu+End+Call" at the same time is a pain!
I am hoping there is a simple app that you just press, select to confirm, and it restarts the phone.
I have had a similar app for every smartphone I have owned except this one. WM5, Blackberry, etc.
I searched in several different ways and have been unable to locate this type of app. If my search wasn't extensive enough please let me know so the monitors can delete this thread.
Search the market for 'tReboot'
It notes on the market that the app only works with Dev phones.
I have a rooted phone - but, not a Dev phone.
That is exactly what I want... If it worked on a Rooted phone it would be great! Thanks for the info.
np sorry about that, didn't know what type you had or whether it would work or not on which phones, just saw it in the market while browsing around I'm sure the dev will make it better.
why don't you just long hold the end call button and press 'shut down'
Or you may get DroidSans Tweak Tools 0.87, it has a option for reboot ^^;
Or use adb (or terminal emulator) to enter the command
reboot recovery
then just wait for it..... It will reboot into recovery mode automagically!
DroidSans Tweak Tools works.
You could also use the gSript app and put a shortcut on your desktop with a reboot script.
I would think that would be the easiest way.
Yes, I just found the Gscript app today.
I think I am going to use that. I have Droidsans Tweak Tools - but, I think mine is the lite version. Didn't use the other version because my phone has JF latest mod on it and I didn't know that app added anything that wasn't covered by the mod that the lite version had.
"Or use adb (or terminal emulator) to enter the command
reboot recovery
then just wait for it..... It will reboot into recovery mode automagically!" - Kinda defeats the whole purpose of having something that is quick and easy.
Looks like Gscript will end up working best. Then if Buttercut will work with my Home program I can just give it a nice looking icon.
Thanks!

Of course, I know about that. But, when I am constantly checking out new themes and tinkering with my phone it is a hassle to keep pressing three buttons at the same time to reboot when I could have a button on the home screen to press without having to pick the phone up.
It is just a convenience issue - like the whole cell phone/smart phone thing to begin with. LOL

Agreed. On my phone I seem to have to be fantastically precise with the timing of all three buttons at once. Even with concentrated effort it most often brings up the dialler, the menu or goes into sleep mode (annoying). I put a GScript - Reboot shortcut on my homepage and it works fine.
I am also looking forward to a application that could reboot the phone like those found in Windows Mobile. As the above reply said, sometimes we may not press all three buttons together at one go. Seems like we got to wait.

Why wait for an app when you can use a script?
Download Gscript from the above posted links.
To create a reboot/soft reset/re-start script you just:
Open Gscript
Select the "Menu" button
Select "Add script"
Enter a name for your script - I entered "Re-Start" - but, use what you want.
Make sure "Needs SU?" is checked.
Enter "reboot" inside the large text window.
Select save.
Long press on your new script and select to "save to SDcard."
Go to your home screen. Long press in a blank area and go through the prompts to add a shortcut. Select Gscript and it will give you the options to choose which script you wish to create a shortcut for. Then you can use Bettercut to give it a nicer look (unless you are like me and using a custom home screen which won't work with Bettercut!)
Why not "reboot recovery"? Then you won't need to hold the home button when it reboots. Just a thought.

One touch lock app?

I was wondering if there was a one touch lock app. I guess in a way it's similar to the iphone? Just press the widget and the phone's lockscreen engages. I dont want to press the power button all the time. I also have the screen on the quickest time out but sometimes find my phone doing weird things in my pocket lol. I've tried as many apps I could find but none of them seem to fit my needs.
I found one that does what I want but according to the reviews, people have problems with it and can't uninstall it. I dont really wanna take that chance.
Description from appbrain:
Lock Screen Widget
Locks your phone with one click iPhone-style.
Before uninstalling widget make sure to disable admin permissions in Location & security > Select device admin > Lock Screen Widget
So does anyone know of such an app?
Also how does one go about disabling the admin permissions in android 2.1 if I do decide to install the lock screen widget?
Thanks
I've got that installed. Works great. My power button stopped working when I replaced my digitizer.

You quoted the name of the app and instructions for how to use it................. search the market for "Lock Screen Widget" ..............
So I did but did you read the reviews? People can't uninstall it. I dont know about you but I can't find the admin permissions if I do need to uninstall it (obviously our phone doesnt have "location and security" it just has location and security listed separately but no "select device admin"). Maybe I'm looking under the wrong setting? Maybe I should've said I'm looking for something similar...

I installed it and was able to uninstall it as well. The instructions are right on the market page for the widget about disabling it in 'Select Device Administrators', but I have no idea why you wouldn't have that option.
Are you using the stock rom?
Yes I am using the stock rom. I'm guessing the device admin is in froyo.
I guess maybe I should get CM6 lol..
thanks for the info

You can use Tasker to build your own widget for this.

[Q] Search Bar doesnt work after new rom install

I just installed Cassie's Rom, and I think I may have forgotten to add in search from the custom list. I have the persistant search bar on the home screen, but clicking on it does nothing. And now since I've set up my phone, i dont want to have to go back and do it all again. Is there a way to install the search app?
Might be a long shot but try downloading Google's Search App from the Play Store. I used to do that when I used MIUI roms that defaulted to the chinese search engine. Might at least be worth a shot.

Did you read my post? Launch the app, once it is launched three little dots will appear at the top or bottom of the screen, these are where you enter any applications settings.

Try a long-press on the screen? Most apps will follow the android guidelines of using the 3 dots to indicate the menu, but others (especially homescreens) will rely on long-presses to declutter the UI.

I already did yesterday

Home button opens google search instead of recent apps, how to fix?

Upgraded firmware to 5.0 but now holding down the home button just opens a google search. How can I get it back to how it was originally and have it open recent apps?

Thing is, that this is normal in LP, because google changed things in lollipop, i don't know for solutions or that there is some .
Reading on internet,i found that lollipop shuts down not working apps automaticly, so there is no need for an app manager

Looks like I just have to hold down the button on the right and that does it but how can I disable home button hold down? Why do they think I'm so desperate for a search I need a dedicated button for it?
