[Q] navigation without a data plan? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

is there a way to use navigation without a data plan?

If you start the navigation at home, using your wifi for downloading the map data, it should run all the way until you reached your destination witheot requesting further map data, afair. You should only run into problems when you leave the track and google navigation tries to download new map data that has been of your initial route.
Better disable data completely if you want to try (e.g. use a wrong apn), otherwise it might become an expensive try.

Thats whay I do.
I let Google Maps download all the map data it needs and as long as yopu stay on your course, you'll be fine.
I've only had data on a couple of phones and thats why wifi is a must for me(it's everywhere here..lol)..Data is over rated in my books if you got good wifi connects.
Hope you get it sorted.

HSDPA, 3G, GPS and Google Maps...

When I first got my kaiser, I could use the Google Maps "My Location" (location via tower position) while connected to WIFI with the 3G logo in the top bar.
Now, I have upgraded to the HTC ROM (so much better), and if I turn off HSDPA (so 3G is showing on top bar), I cannot use the "My Location" feature. As soon as I enable HSDPA and soft reboot, the "My Location" feature works.
Now... the question. Since I am on WIFI, my in house network, am I using the HSDPA to transfer data? I know that the map data comes via my 802.11 network, but why the heck does HSDPA have to be enable? If so, am I being charged for it? I just switched to ATT and have not received a bill, so I am hoping every time I use the HSDPA and google maps on my WIFI, I am not getting charged?
I do not have a data plan, but it still lets me open a data session (which I assume costs a ton). When HSDPA is on an H icon is at the top bar. When its off it goes back to 3G. When I click on the H is says "No Data Sessions Active", so I'm safe right, even though it has to be on for Google Maps?
Also, I cant seem enable GPS with Google Maps. It searches for a satellite forever and never gets anywhere. Does using GPS cost money with ATT? Is there a good program for GPS usage?
My main concern is NOT getting charged cause I do not have a data plan. I only use the WIFI. Thanks for you help.
You need to go to your ATT rep and tell them to turn off the pay per use data package. If not, they usually leave this on, you will be charged. Google Maps uses a data plan. It will not work without one as the maps are loaded as you and your phone are moving. To use GPS without a data plan, you will need to purchase software, ie: Tom Tom 6. around $100 to $150. Hope this helps.

Cool. To clarify... as long as I am using WIFI (say, to get directions from a cafe with free WIFI with Google Maps) I will NOT be charged? Even though the HSDPA is enable but it NOT my source for data because WIFI is?
Also, there is no way to disable ATT data connection locally on the phone?
Ok, I think I figured it out. I used KaiserTweak to disable data, but I can still use wifi and the "My Location" in Google maps work.
Now when I am off WIFI and a program calls for data, the phone it tells me that I can't do it because of my settings, which is exatly what I wanted. The H icon remians, but it seems that it can't connect so the H is just telling me it's available, from what I understand. I hope so, cause I dont want it to connect and run up my bill!
Thanks KaiserTweak!

if you're worried about data bills running up the bill, call AT&T to block data service.
While you're on the phone with them, figure out how much data you used this month and get a MediaNet package to cover data use already used this month (they can backdate it) -- if you used over 4-5 MB you want at least the $5 medianet package, will save you money -- Please don't let your data usage for the first month go unchecked.... otherwise it could be a really big first bill shocker :-/

Ok, I am going to call them. Although I've only used WIFI so far and was accidentally connected to their service only once and didn't use any data-required programs.
We will see when I call them.
WTF... seriously, ATT call centers are closed?
I'm used to tmobiles 24/7 service centers.
Oh well, tomorrow I'll find out. I'm already expecting a big bill. It's my fist one, so prorated plus activation fees.

Removed data plan -now what?-

In an effort to cut costs I removed the data plan from my phone. I setup wifi at home since I rarely use the internet while I am away from home and I plan on just stopping using it at all unless I'm home.
Here's my question. I have a lot of apps on my phone and some of them use the net. Without a data plan are those apps going to connect to the internet while I'm away from home and run up my bill?
Is there anything that I need to do on the phone now that I don't have a data plan to ensure that it is all set up to just be a phone when I'm away from home and a fully functional Android device when I'm home and on wifi?
There is an app for your issue. Can't remember the name, but I'm sure someone will come on to tell you.
You have to ask your provider... are they going to let your phone connect to the net and charge you ridiculous fees or they are not going to let you even hook up unless you have a data plan? Because the phone itself will check for stuff every so often. You can disable wireless synk for google stuff but your other apps may still hook up to the net Either way, screwing something up in the apn settings will guarantee you not to be able to get on the net, it may mess up with your mms messages too though.
Good luck
Check my provider? Seriously? T-Mobile just tells me that I HAVE to have a data plan cause they want to make more money
Try APNdroid in the market... it disables the 3g/edge data...
'Toggle Data' is also good. You just tap the icon and it will disable, and tap to enable again. I also don't have a data plan (not all the time anyway) so it's very useful.
WiSyncPlus is your friend from now on.. http://www.cyrket.com/package/mobi.gearsoft.android.wisyncplus

Google navigation on evo does not require sprint data?

can we get that ported?
just checking out this review of the evo

although i think gps+data is better, when i travel i don't usually have 3g so using gps only would be beneficial to me.
what do you guys think? is this guy full of it?
My guess is he doesn't know what he's talking about, or he misspoke. Unless there's about a gig worth of google maps data stored somewhere on the device, it absolutely needs a data connection to get the map data on the fly.
Wow this sounds great!
you need a data connection, either through wifi or 3g (or really slow through edge) to get the map, or the route if you are using navigation. the gps does not need data to put you on the map.
if using navigation, the map data is cached, and the gps tracks you through the path. i can load the path at home, on my connection, or in decent 3g, and then my navigation is maintained through dead zones, because of the cache. my buddy lives in total wasteland, and i drove out there a few weeks ago, with no loss of navigation at all. i had no phone signal for half of the trip

GPS question

Hey guys quick question would the GPS still work on the n1 if you use it with only wifi. I was thinking of getting an offline map program and then using the GPS on the already downloaded map.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
I heard that google will provide an offline navigation soon. Very soon.
So you don't have to go looking for anything.
GPS can work without any data at all, WiFi or cellular. It'll just take much more time to lock on the position.
Assistance data can be downloaded on WiFi as well as cellular data.

GPS = Provides a location. Besides speeding up an initial fix over data (AGPS) to get ephemeris data it doesn't care about data. And if you don't have any data available, it will download the ephemeris data itself after a few minutes anyway over the sat link.
What YOU mean is navigation... Google Maps? Waze? Those do require data. New Google Maps 5 coming out will not in certain circumstances, and there are other offline mapping programs out there, but most rely on data to download maps, routes, and create routes.

[Q] Does GPS uses data?

Hi, Just got my Galaxy Note a few weeks ago. Downloaded this GPS app called Sygic and was wondering will it requires data and blow up my phone bill? I do in fact have a 500MB internet data plan but i usually used it only on internet. Pls help
GPS wont use your Data connection, i think sygic has pre-loaded maps. if so then it wont use your data connection.
Hold power button for a second or two, select disable data, turn off wifi.
If Sygic continues to work, you are good.
What size is the app? Does it have on-board maps? If the app is like 6mb and there are no additional downloads, chances are it streams data to download maps on the fly, hence using your data. If the app has an initial download of a gig or so, you probably have onboard maps.
its a 6mb file. But when downloading the maps. Its about 300MB.
GPS uses very few data to approximate the position (that helps to fix) and download ephemeris (essential to fix). I've tried my GPS without data, fix time goes from few seconds to more than 5 minutes (it did not achieve fix).
BUT, I think a 500 Mb plan is far enough. I use from time to time Google navigation (which download maps), and use 200-300 Mb a month (not only with navigation).
GPS not using data, it connects directly with satellite, but when you use any application that uploads your location, uses data. e.g. Google map lattitude. to locate your position data not being used, but lattitude updates your location at define period of time, that uses data.
Sygic, it dont requires data. but on first usage it download required basic files n map, that uses data. Sygic requires basic files of around 300Mb or more. as well Map as per your selection. e.g. India map + Basic files are about 800MB, so if you have not downloaded it with wi-fi OR transfere these files (it stored in 'Aura' folder of device internal memory), then it will download. Once you complete this dowload, you can use it without data /even without SIM card too.
Google Map navigation, That uses data. but you can limit data by pre fetch map, You will get this option in - Map -setting -Labs - enable precatch map area
Now you can long press any area on map, you want to travel - press popup menu - select pre cache map area, it will download 10ml area, you have selected. so this can be fetched using wi-fi. and you ca save data during navigation. But it still requires active data connection to run Navigation.

This is untrue. First, on my captivate when I still had a 200mb plan, before I switched to unlimited, I would input my destination over wifi, disable mobile data, and I could get Navigation all the way to my destination. I have done the same think with my WiFi only transformer. You only need data at the beginning of the trip, unless you get a fair bit off course.

I said it requires to 'run' navigation.better term is 'Start'. you have already run application when you wr on wifi, But what about if you have to restart it in any case? In sort it is not complete offline, like sygic / navigon n other offline mavigation SW.
Onboard navigation programs like Aura Sygic do not recquire data connection..
However after installing Aura, you will need to download the maps of your choice and in this case you will need wifi connection and you will do this only once, unless you want to download more maps in the future..
With Offboard navigation apps like some versions of google maps, the required maps are not installed on your device, but in a server and therefore you will be needing data connection.
I will always go for ONBOARD gps programs, they are more reliable, stable and I wont get a data plan only to use Google's supposedly free stuff which are not working that good anyway. Not to mention the roaming costs once I am abroad....so, not that free...
My favorite onboard program is iGO, but unfortunately, I cannot find a suitable version for the GNote's screen resolution...
But Aura Sygic is doing just fine, at least here in Europe..

If you want to download gps ASSIST data, in order to speed up that first satellite fix, you can do it on demand by using apps such as GPS Status and you can do it at home using a wifi connection.
But since I have this monster (GNote) The first fix happen always amazingly fast even during a cold start without any assist, unlike many other phones I owned
So when I use the gps, I am always offline, I dont have a data -account, data network mode is always deactivated and I dont have any APN configured
And off course I dont have wifi in my car
