Hello, my name is.....

Hello All!
New to Android, but not new to hacking mobiles.
Palm devices in middle school and high school. Original B&W iPods (hex editing using ipw) and every iPod through to iPhone (Including internal hardware mods like rerouting the DAC) - high school through past college.
Got sick of the Apple games they play with developers and haphazard code systems (rather than doing good drivers, just kept it to a bare minimum of working - see bluetooth section especially when it comes to "bitrate grouping" and "real time operations"). Played with Android, thought it was awesome and put in preorder for Evo when came.
One of the Best decisions I have ever made! In fact, so good that I am getting my boyfriend to buy one (we will be on the same plan - 25% Company discount ). Now my brothers and cousins and aunts and uncles want one too after playing with it for a few hours. Best part, google is never going to send me angry letters or freak out about a rooted phone, heck they might even encourage it.
4G Coverage is great by me (5-6MB) so I can kick Comcast to the curb (terrible company) and everything on the phone just works, doesn't keep crashing. Everything just works, especially hooking up to my car setup and various automation tools. Games are not as good (ChaosRings), but who buys a phone to be a PSP? It is a tool!
CURRENT TASK - IR Universal Remote for Android devices (other lossless capable players with a headphone jack can too). Hopefully will be able to make it into a learning remote, but the problem is getting it to record in at a lossless or very low loss, then cleaning the signal and modulating onto stereo at 19k/channel. If someone really knows encoding, help is appreciated and it would be a free program of course! just sick of loosing remotes....and the hardware piece can be put together for $6 worth of radio shack parts or $1 using a broken remote and a trip to the dollar store.
NEXT TASK - Get a working USBhost for EVO that allows use with USB Touchscreen (lilliput model) for the ultimate Car Docking and control station.
BTW - congrats Sven on getting a USBhost for Nexus!
So well..... Hello and Nice to meet you!

Would you buy a Android based MP3 Player?

Seriously, if Google came out with a MP3 player that ran on Android, would you buy it? Think about it, it has worked for Apple with the iPod touch running iOS (same OS that runs off the iPhone). Post your comments...
I wouldn´t buy any OS MP3 Player as I have a device that does that and much more!
My phones, work just as well. So I would have to say no. That, and my Sansa FUZE with rockbox was on the CHEAP I've got 20GB player for cheaper than a shuffle.
I'm sure there are other people, like me, that purchase certain phones for their cababilities of not neccesitasting to have to use other item if you dont have to. Just like my phone is basically my "point and shoot" camera as well.
They already have them:
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/9254204/Trail/searchtext>PHILLIPS+MP3.htm
http://www.archos.com/products/imt/archos_5it/index.html?country=us&lang=en (it's a tablet but still).
An mp3 player? No, probably not (it's just not needed, I prefer a dedicated portable audio player, which the iPad Touch is not either). An Android tablet? Now that I would have to consider...
I had an MP3 player once. A Diamond Rio PMP300 to be exact.
Came with 32mb of memory. Enough for 8 songs, 10 if I got the bitrate lower. It also cost me $249. When I got it (1998), no one knew what it was, or what an MP3 was. I loved it.
But yeah, I wouldn't buy one now. I have a phone for that.
I wouldn't buy an mp3 player just for Android. Now a tablet with good hardware and made by a respectable manufacturer would definitely get me excited.
like anything i think it would depend on how it looks. although considering that nothing about android today suggests that it would be anything less than beautiful to look at i think i would have to say that ide give it a shot! also it would need the little extras like radio and wifi and all that stuff the itouch does.
Nope. I've got my Evo for videos, plus AT&T Uverse, and my iphone for netflix.
My Desire is my MP3 player, so I wouldn't go out and buy a seperate MP3 player.
Well, at the moment i have a Sansa Clip+ running RockBox. Fantastic little player. I was thinking of getting an archos 43 vision.
I would have an android mp3 player if the battery lasted as long as my Clip+.
Take a look at this though: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/4-3-lc...er-with-fm-radio-black-4gb-tf-card-slot-37241

That actually doesn't look bad and its cheap I wouldn't mind owning one of those!
Samsung are releasing the 'Wi-fi 4' which is a Galaxy S varient PMP. No phone functions but improved codec support.
Not sure there is any need for devices like this though. As others have said we have everything we need, including call capability, in our regular devices.
I would consider giving up my Zune 80gb

I don't know how people use their phones as an MP3 player. Battery life is too precious for me to be using it as an MP3 player.
would be in my opinion something for heavy users.
for me my android phone is enough
I've git my iPod touch for that. Also, Apple and Google are different. Theres low-end android phones that play MP3 etc. while Apple only have the one iPhone which not everybody can afford, but people can feel like they have something like an iPhone and iPod at the same time if you get me. Was actually quite smart of Apple if I'm honest.

Had Mp3 players for years, but now I'm only use my sgs. Tired of taking two devices with me every day.
1. Add music to phone
2. Buy bluetooth headphones
3. ????
4 Profit?
absolutely yes!

What game controllers are tested working?

From various threads, I see that the wiimote with or without the wii classic controller works well.
That's the only widely available controller I've seen. Some people have been pimping the Phonejoy modified PSX controller, but those are custom made. The datel retro wii controller has also come up, but Nintendo has all but driven these out of the market, and for our limited bt range, tethering Nintendo's Wii Classic controller to a Wiimote may be a better option anyway.
I'm specifically curious about the PS3 controller, but some googling suggests it's a no-go with Android for the foreseeable future. Too bad, as I may pick up a PS3 at some point, but probably will never own a Wii.
Any other game controllers tested working? Any of them look more versatile or otherwise better than the Wiimote + Wii Classic combo?
Has anyone using the Wiimote or other controllers found them useful aside from gaming?
the datel retro controller seems to be the way to go imo.

IDK, looking around a little more, I found there's a newer generation (still a year old) Nintendo offering, the Classic Controller Pro:
http://www.amazon.com/Wii-Classic-C...UTF8&coliid=INNONUR2I65HQ&colid=3L10NYSDYJ11Z
It stacks the L/R buttons, adds grips, and spaces the analog sticks better. Given the NC's limited range, it might be a pro rather than a con that it tethers to a bluetooth radio (the wiimote). At $15, even if you need to buy a wiimote you could come in under the $40 price tag on the datel retro.
ETA: Actually, a knock-off wiimote should be fine for our purposes, right? So you could have wiimote+CC Pro for $25-30 from Amazon.
wow, havent seen that before, thats deff way to go.
There is also the Msi bgp100 gamepad. But personally I have a datel and love it. Not to much use besides gaming though.
I like the datel because its 1 controller instead of 2, having the wiimote and a classic controller just seems bulkie. But, yes, it would give you an extra foot of 2 of range if needed. Fyi the datel is the only stand alone wireless on the market. All the other aftermarket wireless wiimotes have to plug an adapter into the back of the wiimote.
im using a fake wiimote and it works fine...going to get the classic controller to extend the range a bit
check out deal extreme for some good deals...shipping does take forever from china though...
I too would have liked to see the PS3 Controller work. As I think it really would have been the ultimate controller as far as everything goes.
However it doesn't, so I purchased a kid's wiimote (just a smaller wiimote for extra portability) and a offbrand classic controller from gamestop for like $10. All in all was under 40, and it really helps with range issues.
That said, it's not much bulkier of a setup than the Datel wireless controller... If you're planning on taking the nook color somewhere to play games for a few hours, you can easily use an old backpack or wal-mart plastic bag to carry it all =\.
Just bought a knockoff Wiimote and Nunchuck off of Amazon, and a Wii Classic Controller Pro, all for $29! Here are the links to the two items:
Wii Classic Pro
Wiimote and Nunchuck
I'll update yall as to how they work as soon as I get them, cant wait to get playin some N64!
Well, I was trying not to spend any more money on the NC this month, but I broke down and grabbed the CCP for $15 while my Amazon Prime trial lasts. I'll look around locally for a knock-off or used wiimote, but otherwise I can get one from Amazon for $10 shipped.
I have not tried to use an emulator. However, this might be of interest to you.
N64oid a Nintendo 64 emulator is free for 1-2 weeks. In fact, Nesoid, Snesoid, Gensoid, N64oid, Ataroid, Gearoid and Gameboid are all free at the moment.

I haven't seen the Wii Controller itself, but I have seen 3rd party Nubchucks and Classic Controllers at 5 Below stores in the US... (It's like a Dollar store, but with the upper limit at 5 dollars per item...)

I thought that, then I bought a Datel Retro. With newer versions of CM7 I have the Retro working from 10 feet away.

Yeah, I checked the dollar store, but no love. I might be making a field trip near the cheap mall tomorrow, so I'll poke my head in Wally World and the like.

I've seen good results with the wiimote, too, but that's nuts. I wonder why the game controllers do so much better than other devices?
There's a new USBhost kernel for CM7 in the dev forum that should open the door to ps3 and xbox controllers...
Just got in my Wiimote and Classic controller, and they pair and work great! Only thing it, I cant seem to get any diagonal directions working... Does anyone else use Fpse and have some advice for setting up the controls for a Classic controller?? Thanks in advance!
Diagonals seem to be working for me in SNesoid, but I can't get the CCPro to work in Gensoid. It recognized the buttons for keymapping, but the games didn't respond
Anyone see a Datel Retro for sale anywhere?

I'd love a working 360 controller on the NC. Even if it's just to see my wifes face when she sees me goofing around on it.

Xbox 360 Vs Ps3 vs Wii

I don't want this to become a flame war with people saying "ps3 sucks" or "xbox is a piece of crap".
I'm just asking 2 simple questions...
Which would you buy Xbox 360 Ps3 or Wii? And why?
Or which do you have?
I have Ps3 I mean all are good but Wii is kind of childish and I don't want
to have to pay for online for Xbox
The only downfall of Ps3 to me is ps3 network getting hacked

PS3. Blu-ray player, motion controllers, free online stuff. I personally have a PS3. And to counter your downfall of the PS3, hasn't XBL gone down for a few weeks as well? Thought I heard something about that a while ago.
Sent from my Droid Incredible running a random CM7 nightly.
I have a 360 for the simple reason it was out years before the other two.now I would still buy it though.the live is not that expensive and I find it to be more refined
And more secure then psn. Also the controller is more comfortable to me.

ps3 ofcourse!
Tried both systems and I always preferred Xbox 360 just because the service always seemed better. Don't care if I have to pay $60 for a year. I also like the community and the amount of ignorance on Xbox Live. I see it as comedy. Like a virtual Gran Torino. haha
I have a 360 and I'm considering a PS3. I'm fed up of all the racist on XBL, and I'm tired of microsofts proprietary BS. Ive gone through 3 mics because of wiring issues, I can't add a bigger hard drive, and I can't stand the laggy ass media center.
PS3 has the same games, and does more. I thought the kinnect was cool, but after 3 months of ownership its been used twice, its a gimmicky child's toy.
Sorry for the rant.
PS
If you think Halo is a great game. Get a life. It's great if you've never played anything else.
The Wii is definitely the better of the three. I unique shape along with remotes for controllers makes it awesome. Besides the Wii is the only console that doesn't make you feel sad that you don't have an HDTV (since there's no HDMI port). And finnaly the Wii has great games like the ones below
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref...+ubisoft&ie=UTF8&qid=1310370111&rnid=11846801
/sarcasm
playing on station... i think 15 jears. so i never change.
PS3 all the way. The ps3 is a better entertainment system then the Xbox, with bluray and dlna. Although I think hardcore gamers are better of with an Xbox, better online(I wouldn't pay it though) and usually better graphics with cross platform games( take the call of duty series for example).
I own a ps3 and have never had an Xbox, its a better system for my needs
Also, never liked the wii. Too childish and I get tired pretty quickly, I know how kinect users feel
I have a 360 and love the online play and whats $50 a year gona hurt your pockets
rocking on the nintendo wii !
beast of the generation man! you can run almost anything on it
e.g. linux distro, play dvds, wii games, web browsing, gamecube games, homebrew apps, music player... possibilties are countless
None!
PC all the way !!!!
I've had PSX, PS2, PSP and PS3, but have also had Xbox360 (a couple of em, actually). I personally prefer the PS range, but that's not a knock to the Xbox. And to people that say they prefer 1 controller over the other, they're like 90% exactly the same! It took me about an hour of playing an Xbox to forget that it was a different controller!
Anyway, you won't get any fanboyisms from me. They're all great consoles, but I like what I like.
Xbox 360 for me. I love both (i mean PS3.... Wii, bleh) but i like the 360 controller better, more refined services, and slightly better looking games cross platform (90%)
That said, i know it has its faults, like not having blu-ray, much more limited disc storage that might make devs cut corners to make it fit, and less exclusives (Kratos for MK ugh...)
All personal preference though
s3nT Fr0m aN0tH3r dIm3nSi0n (EVO 3D)
xbox 360
Xbox has:
Better more comfy controller
Halo
Gears Of War
As well as COD just like the ps3
Better online service
PS3:
Not as comfy controller
free internet gaming and browser (kinda cool but there online service is horrible compared to xbox
blueray player- unnecessary cause im not paying 30 bucks for a movie
dlna- um my tv has this already
few exclusive games that arent even that good...
PLUS all my friends on xbox and not ps3
AS for the wii- its fun to play with multiple people and play all the mario series games but boring to play alone
Kinect- i like it a lot, sure i dont use it all the time, but kinect sports is always fun and a good little workout
ps3 of course i had a xbox from release date and got a ps3 2 christmases ago and i just sold my xbox in february for lack of use .even tho i was a live member
I have all three and here's my opinion on them.
Xbox 360 - My favorite controller of the three. Live is good, but I shouldn't have to pay a premium for online, especially when you're shoving ads in my face. Besides Halo or Gears of War, it doesn't have many exclusives.
Wii - Not many hardcore games, only about one big title a year, then it collects dust again until next year. Good for emulation when hacked.
PS3 - I have an older model model with backwards compatibility, so having every PlayStation platform (besides the PSP) in one console is great. I just recently bought it so I can't say much about it at this point. Any game recommendations?

i bought a 360 at launch and within a week it overheated...sent away, came back, same thing. also, it looked so cheap...like a fisher price toy...hate the 360 control pad with a passion...truly awful...good riddens.
bought ps3 fatty at launch, love the dual shock. for me its perfect. console lasted three years before the blu ray lens went. got a slim..running perfect..i will buy the next ps console.

Get your Bluetooth controller before the crowds

Forgive the cross post from another forum site, just helpful info for those interested...
So I was at my local Target, and my local Best Buy is next door, couldn't resist going in to play with my future phone (got home delivery). Not much hullabaloo happening, but did play with the VR. Great experience, can't wait for my own. But a heads up, I grabbed the one steelseries status xl Bluetooth controller left on the shelf. The 2 minutes I was playing with the VR was enough to realize a controller is going to make the experience much much better. And once the hoardes of new VR owners realize the same it may be hard to find a controller quickly. But then again, there's always Amazon.
Maybe a non issue, but seeing only one I the shelf with a lot of empty space made me think of grabbing it now.
Now I just need the darn phone and gear! ::deep breaths:::
Which controller is that and how much?

seems to have good reviews compared to others
Already got one that I've been using with my Apple TV for a while so happy I ain't got to spend more money! Lol. Good to know, thanks for the info.
I bought a Mogo Pro used at a game store for $20. Works great.
Picked up a Nexus Player controller on closeout on my way home the morning after getting my Edge. So far so good!
