[Q] Jeff Sharkey's AMOLED "night mode" - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Has anyone attempted to/willing to try to implement this on the Captivate?
jsharkey.org/blog/2010/07/01/android-surfaceflinger-tricks-for-fun-and-profit/

This is really interesting. I'm into astronomy and it would be awesome to not have the phone blind me everytime I turn it on during an observing session to use it for google sky and the atomic clock.

Apparently no dev types are interested enough to tell us that they are not interested.

No doubt.
This thing is blinding even on the lowest brightness setting.

Yes, the brightness is pretty ridiculous. Is this because of the AMOLED screen? Can't set brightness below "blinding" due to no backlight?

I have heard that the leaked I897UCJH2 rom has a lower mininal brightness; which might help with the blinding brightness at night, and also helps bettery a bit.
Not sure if you guys are interested in leaked ROMs but I'm sure if Samsung does not release it that a cook will make a custom rom from it.

looks awesome

Bump.
I think this would be extremely useful.

Me too. I'm jealous of the iphone star map program. The authors were smart enough to make it all black and red. You can tell none of the google authors star gaze in their spare time with all that color.

on Google sky map theres a night mode option when you press the menu key.

I seem to recal hearing that at a certain point when the voltage is too low the screen will still work, but you see glitches/artifacts.
So im assuming this is why the min brightness is set where it is.

There is that very low brightness that occurs when you have less than 10% battery life. I wish they would make that brightness user selectable.

Even if the screen cannot be physically set below a certain level of brightness, it would be trivial to have the OS do the equivalent of putting a partially-transparent black rectangle over the screen. Sure, color fidelity would suffer, but it would be a welcome option anyway--I have seriously considered wearing sunglasses in bed.

wow, i think your right.
instead of trying to set the brighness lower just put a transparent gray object that sites on top of all the windows.
It would have the same effect and save tons of battery.

You can!

Search for a widget called Curvefish Brightness Level in the market. Set it to 0% brightness, which appears to be the same as the low battery life brightness.

display issue with super-amoled

download display color test from market or any other aplication
set your display light to manual and lower one possible.now open display color test, or any other picture and you whil see.... some orizontal lines like gradients.
(for me i can use a lower light to 40 %).
tell me your experience.
please.
Light lowered as low as possible... no probleme here
With some less intensive colors I could make out some kind of lines but I had to watch pretty closely to notice them. If I hadn't been searching for them, I probably wouldn't even have noticed. So it's nothing I would worry about, unless they are more pronounced for you.

Just slide your finger along the notification bar.
app called "brightness level"
set to 0%
Interested in this as well.
I think we are actually looking for something lower than 0%
It is probably the amoled screen vs backlit one, the way they operate. 20% on lcd is much lower than 0% on amoled.
Maybe there is some kind of overlay that can act as Rayban? Like ie when you do Titanium backup, you can see the rest of the application being much darker than the notification that pops up. Probably some overlay being used.
Maybe some of you asking yourself why, but try using it in complete darkness for awhile and you'll see what I mean.

Thats what i mean like a torch in the night.
I had tested all brightness apps in market but no one goes lower.
Thanks for help.
Mybe a dev or supercurio can help to explain
Yes, the lowest stock level is already quite bright, too bright of course for night use in bed.
You'll also notice that the colors & contrast looks quite dull on the lowest stock brightness settings, with a color deviation in the red shadow colors.
With the revamped Voodoo color which will be released step by step during the next weeks, you'll be able to go so "dark" (if chosen) that you'll be almost not able to see it in the dark even when on
All that, preserving color accuracy and color temperature (which goes more red when you lower the brightness on stock)

[SOLVED] Xperia T - screen dimming

Hi, I love my Xperia T but there is one thing that bothers me. I noticed that every xperia T has that automatic screen dimming when viewing darker media on your screen. For example, when i turn on facebook app, before the actual app opens there is dark grey screen. During that sequence screen gets darker, and when white facebook page pops up you can actually see screen adjusting its brightness to higher "normal" level. That really bothers me especially when gaming. On dark sequences screen gets really dark, and than it takes second or two to adjust normal brightness when brighter sequences appear. You can actually see brightness going down when darker images are displayed, and then back up again when brighter images appear.
So I'm not talking about dimming when overheating or flickering (that second is fixed by jellybean update as I noticed), or etc. And before you ask me I if turned on autobrightness in display settings, it has nothing to do with that.
My question is, is there a way to turn this off because it is really annoying?

All i thought it differs to auto brightness thats why i ask it sir. Sorry for the question then
You dont have to apologise. So, the problem is that when you watch darker images, or videos, or just any darker screen on your display, contrast and brightness goes down. And when you switch to brighter screen you can actually see, with your naked eye, brightnes going up. I see that Sony intentionally put that feature, but it is very, very stupid one. There is no point in making dark images even darker with even less contrast. I assume they wanted to achieve better black levels that way, or I don't know, but it is very stupid way of doing black levels more black. And, of course, there is no setting in settings menu tu turn this nonsense off, nice one Sony!

This similar annoying ass feature is there in my Spectre laptop. This was supposed to be a battery saving feature and I haven't yet found a way to turn it off. Maybe it's also a way to get higher black levels.
This is the Bravia Engine. Just unselect Settings -> Display -> Mobile Bravia Engine

Dude, this is definitely not a battery saving mode. There is no need for batery saving mode when displaying dark screen, and the problem occurs when displaying dark images or any other dark media, app or non-app. every single time.

OMG... Mobile bravia engine has apsolutely nothing to do with with that, because bravia engine works only in phones stock apps for viewing videos and pictures, and the effect is not even similiar to screen dimming. It brings more saturated colors and that is all.
Same problem is posted here: http://communities.sonyericsson.com/thread/61560?start=0&tstart=0 and Sony replied "I'm sorry that it has taken so long but I have done some testing now using a later software and I'm not able to replicate the issue that you guys report so I assume it's fixed." It is more than obvious that they like to close their eyes on every single problem that occurs. Thank you Sony for your gorgeous support to your beloved customers. I cant be more sarcastic, of course.

It's not my way, it's the way it is. If one understands what mobile bravia engine is, one could never offered it as a solution to a problem that has nothing to do with it. I'm terribly sorry if I ofended you, and I apologize for my attitude. I'm not mad at you, or anybody else here, I just don't see why would one write something just to be written. I know my T-Rex wery well, and I know there is no "normal" way to turn this dimming crap off, so I posted my question here, and expected that someone of the experts would offer some kind of solution to that. And I got things like "turn automatic brightness off", or "turn mobile bravia engine off" even though I previously mentioned that i tried all that stuff. People are "trying" to "help" me here, and they didn't even read what I've written. I'm really not one of guys that would post a question here just to be posted, I searched the crap out of the internet, and I found apsolutely nothing helpfull. That's why I decided to open this thread, to hear what experts have to say.

Thank you guys very much! Changed values, and rebooting my phone...everything is fine now, no more stupid dimming. However...I noticed that color adjusment is still visible when changing from dark screen to colorfull bright one. So the dimming is now definitely gone, but that color adjusment is still visible, like it changes contrast a bit, from worse to better, it is clearly visible. Any ideas about that?
I'm uploading a video I recorded with my webcam to get you a closer look. I'll post a link once it's uploaded.
Video will be live here in a couple of minutes: http://youtu.be/fHozO8zGZ1Y
After I managed to turn off DLS, that auto-contrast thing still remains. If you look closely, you'll se that the blue facebook stripe (and everything else) slightly changes its color/contrast when returning from the gray screen. But DLS was much bigger pain in the ass and I'm very pleased with the result od turning it off.

Disable dynamic contrast?

I hate the dynamic contrast on this phone. To the point im thinking of returning it to get another phone. I was reading this review
http://www.anandtech.com/show/6747/htc-one-review/10
and it leads me to believe that it is possible somehow. "The HTC One includes a dynamic contrast function which can’t easily be disabled, as there’s no option in the display settings for it."
Does anyone know if theres a mod to do this or how I could do it? Maybe theres a rom that allows this? Its driving me crazy the way the backlight adjusts constantly.

Errm do you mean auto brightness? As dynamic contrast really isn't going to be noticeable enough to annoy anybody, as proven with TV's.
Try just setting brightness to 1/3 of the slider.

Dynamics contrast only affects pure black scenes and it is not really noticeable during a normal TV show. Apart from us lot most wouldn't notice it, but on this phone I can't notice It at all and it would be linked to auto brightness so that it tries to keep up a consistent experience. Try sticking a constant brightness and see if it's better

Look for an app called "Lux Auto Brightness" on the Play Store. There is a lite version that you can try out. It's allowed me to go in the negative brightness and it works pretty well.

thanks. don't suppose this will work with locale...
maybe i'll have to write my own pluggin
I haven't used Lux but I really like Screen Filter for the same job: it has a huge range of dimming up to total blackness and can turn off the capacitative button backlight (requires turning the screen off and back on) which is a big deal when viewing a dimmed screen in a dark room. And the full version is free and ad-free as well.
thanks again for your replies. looks like Lux works with locale.
but... it's not quite working for me yet (setting to negative values of brighness at certain times, etc doesn't seem to work)
i'll keep trying. thankfully there is a trial version
