I want to know the same thing and also, if the official Kies JM1 firmware update is the same with the one from samsung-firm ?
I'm using JM5 now, updated from stock via samsung firmwares and it seems to be a lot faster with the lag fix.
I found JM5 was better - especially for memory leaks. Startup on JM5 i have around 160mb free, but with JH1, only 130mb, and it drops to 99mb pretty quickly even after closing apps with ATK.
Without a lag fix, there was still lag.
The CSC only has 6 localities, 4 of them are chinese, and only UK and USA, where as JM5 has loads more including Australia
I found wifi and 3G/HSDPA stronger on the JM5 radio as well. Had major issues with wifi dropping out similar to JF3 with JH1. GPS was ok, but not on Cell triangulation. JM5 was much more accurate.
I also had issues flashing back to JM5 after flashing JH1. I worked out that if I had partition checked, and included the 512 PIT file, odin just hung. Flashing back to JM5 without these worked fine.
There's certainly nothing new in it, Quadrant scores have been lower than the base JM5 as well (from another thread), so if you're on JM5, just stick with it.
Hope this helps.
My phone is from Singapore. So is there a problem for me to flash jm5 which is an euro version? Thx. Noob here.
JM6 running awesome here! I found it better than JM5.. Haven't used JH1 due to poor reviews..
I flash from jg4 no problem at all, gps is way better in jm5

JH1 only has English UK/US, Korean and 3 chinese locales.
But it is very smooth and bug free. It doesn't contain the default number app when you try to add a default number for multiple contacts (Reason for my choice of JH1 over JM5.)
JH1 contains a native task manager which shows my memory over 175MB ram after a day use, after a reboot or "fast reboot" app another good 20-30MB is freed.
I am using the JM5 modem file though as I find the GPS is stronger and somewhat usable for walks (after changing the gps.conf to use 4 uk pool time servers as I am in London, I find this fix assists the picking up of signals ie more sats, faster locks.) JM5 also picks up the signals stronger and holds on to them for longer.
JM5 PDA was a little jumpy at times for me and the memory showed less.
Both tested after OneClickLagFix. GPS were both tested from the same spot outside my flat window (after giving both modem files a 5 mins warm up time through LbsTestMode Get Position Test.)
Anyone know of a good firmware with better GPS than JM5 (Modem file is XXJM3)?

I am using JH1
I am from Malaysia, currently using I9000ZSJH1 with mimo lag fix quarant 1.4k but phone still lagging, I dont think it's firmware tho mayb it's something wrong with my device or external sd card?
Read some post before that one said I9000XWJM5 with CSC I9000XWJM2 is the best. Any issue to use this mix different firmware? Is that ok to use Europe firmware as I am staying in Malaysia?
I am going to try this out then apply Tayutama update.zip lag fix. Wonder will it solve my current lag issue.
Hope to get more advice or oppinions on this. thank you

Apparently they released the JH2 again but including a SPL fix, so people already on JH2 will need to flash back to JG8 or something, then flash forward to JH2 again to get the new SPL fix
I got JH2 the other day. Yesterday my phone was going retarded, freezing and losing signal when it never had before. Seemed ok last night and today though I haven't spent much time with it today.
GPS was totally out of whack last night, sitting still and my location was jumping all over the place. Google navigation is unusable. Checked compass in GPS essentials and it was fine but in nav it just spins around and can't get it right.
Youtube widget changed. Now shows most viewed on the main bar but video and search buttons are not functioning properly. Right now it only shows the search button. If I search or launch youtube then go back the video button will be there but neither thet nor the search button will work. Wish I had just left it alone.
did you get the update with the spl fix?
and was your 3 button mode working for you before?
if not does it work with the new update?
lol so many questions... and thanks for the replies and the update on the firmware.
Just update dude. Everyone is experiencing various issues regardless of the firmware. I run 3 to 4 times a week using endomondo and the GPS tracks my route almost flawlessly. A few hitches here and there but nothing horrible.
My 3 button combo wasn't working at all and I was already on JH2. Had to do the registry trick to get Kies to flash the new JH2 on my phone and now it works. Upgrading to the new JH2 is the best choice to make, especially if you have plans on using a few mods.
I highly recommend the battery mod available on this forum after you upgrade. The SGS stock battery indicator is horrible and inaccurate, and I rather not waste my homescreen space on a battery widget.
Ya, did the update a few days ago. Three buttons work now and my gps doesnt think im in japan anymore (ya it was that bad) anyway definitely worth the update.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
My 3 button mode worked before the update, I haven't tried it since. I haven't rooted and not sure yet if I will, will see how official 2.2 goes first.
Still losing signal though. Yesterday the girlfriend tried to call me and said she either got a busy signal (WTF) or it just went straight to voicemail.
Today I tried to make a call and had to redial two or three times because it kept losing signal. Def a problem with the phone and not anything to do with reception in my area. Only phone calls though, never lose signal when using data or market ect.
Guys, I'm a bit dense on this subject so please be kind.
I have JH2 on my Galaxy. I can't remember if I updated to this version via Kies.
So far, the 3-button recovery problem has not affected me. I haven't rooted Android (since I don't need SU rights), I haven't yet unlocked the phone (no need) and I haven't attempted any Android system updates. I guess I could be called an average user. I haven't tested the 3-button issue.
What circumstances could arise down the road, which would make it necessary for me to do a 3-button recovery? In other words, is this a problem which could affect all Galaxy owners?
Thanks.

I havent been able to update to JH2 from JG9 (trying to use kies but thats a prize in itself) but I have in the past gotten where I would try to call, and as the call dropped while still dialing it would tell me the radio is off. Or it would tell me im in airplane mode etc.
Now for the last 24 hrs I have yet to be able to make a call, although datta and texting works perfectly fine, every time I make a call it says my radio is off. And the same problem when someone calls, they are lucky if they get a fast busy signal.
Im talking with bell to get a replacement in store, if not I have a 'insurance' plan that'll give me a loaner etc while they ship it out.
Any update on whether your phone is still dropping into Flight mode?
I'm just wondering if someone can list any ROMs or flashing methods/guides that work on Bell I9000M phones without losing the 850mhz band.
I'd really like to give Tayutama's SuperLite version a go (for example), but I need the 850mhz band; is it safe? If not is there something we can do to re-enable it without going back to a stock ROM?
I've looked around the forum and not seen any clear answer to this.
Input is appreciated!
I second this.. But im thinking ill be disappointed as ive read a few places that the bell galaxy s cant be flashed with the i9000 roms out there without minor to major issues
i believe if you flash only the pda and leave jh2 modem and jh2 csc. you can flash any of the newer roms 2.1 eclair.. but havent tried it myself.. my one exerience with jm7 when i didnt do this and only kept the csc i lost my 850 mhz.

Does it have to be Eclair ROMs only?
I just spent the night trying various ones and got squat. I did find this post here (forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8299301&postcount=18) but it seems to be older and references the JH2 files, and not necessarily a specific ROM.
If I find one that works, I'll post it here.
For now, I'm heading back down to 2.1 stock version (ugh).
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=site:+xda-developers.com+"i9000m"+froyo
I would also like to know as well... I am quite interested in trying Darky's Froyo rom
(Apparently it is safe, will probably give it a shot today at some point)
if you flash only the pda of a rom, and the jh2 modem/csc files, know that you may experience battery drain issues because they do not match. i flashed jpk with jh2 modem/csc for few days and the battery drain was insane. only fix was to flash the full jpk, then re-enable all the bands.
Would love to get an answer for this as well.
Phone crashed on first day from the store. Touchwiz issue had to wipe. So i dont see the down side to flashing when the stock can crash too.
And no gps which is such a letdown. Cant lock location ever.

Okay here are some straight facts - you can flash any of the new roms on a Bell SGS. You need the Bell version of the modem to maintain 850 - it works with 2.2 - it may or may not not be fully optimized for 2.2 but it works just as well as it does on 2.1. It just doesn't matter that much in the grans scheme of things.
All other so-called issues with battery drain, SD card, bricking, weird behavour, etc. are not caused by the ROMs either but rather the execution of underlying apps - usually optimization and timing related issues - if you have a problem it is most likely software related - i.e the app has not been optimized under FROYO.
Seriously, this is not rocket science. You cannot permanently brick your phone from FROYO - it is impossible.
If you want to successfully implement Froyo but are skeptical, pick a ROM, flash the Bell modem and then try it out for a week or two BEFORE dumping a bunch of new apps on it. Then decide if you want to keep it - which you will. Then start finding apps that are Froyo optimized and you will have no issues. Seriously.

I didn't flash a bell specific modem. I used the one that came packaged in Docs JPM froyo. Works perfect with no loss of any 850mhz 3G band.
Good job and clarification - as long as the modem supports 850 it does not need to be Bell.
First off for those that think you have WCDMA 850 working after a rom flash designed for another region, make sure you actually try and run only the WCDMA 850 band to see if you actually have it. If your not running on Bell and your network doesn't have WCDMA 850 available to you then you can't check and it won't matter. Any rom designed for a region that doesn't use WCDMA 850 will not give you WCDMA 850 and why should it.
Install whatever rom you want and simply flash your JH2 modem to get your WCDMA 850 back. After the modem flash make sure you put your phone into automatic mode and select all to refresh the modem band availability.
If your able to flash your modem AND your csc you might even get your product code back.... maybe.
For Bell users it would be nice to have a Froyo modem that will support WCDMA 1900 and 850. The 2.1 JH2 works fine though with Froyo.

Are you sure that you have the WCDMA 850 band functional with the JPM modem? Didn't work for me. Are you on Bell's network?
So is there a way to get the gps working? I can wait on Froyo but the GPS issue is terrible. Also any way to do a true backup of the phone. like an image.

As for the GPS its a bit better but still sucks.
I've never had a GPS problem so I can't tell you if its an issue with the hardware/software/location/interference, etc. Since day 1 (three months ago) I have had no issues locking satellites to 10m accuracy, regardless of firmware. Actually the only time I had an issue was on Osoyoos lake but I suspect that may have had more to do with the proximity to the border crossing.

Getting a fix isn't the issue. Its active tracking.
Active tracking has been a-o-k the whole time as well which I thought was implied by using the "locking to 10m accuracy" terminology.
Just cooked and installed a rom on my Telstra GT-I9000T handset and I couldn't be happier. The speed has more than doubled and I am free from Telstra refusing to release updates and their bloatware. Any way I have some Questions.
I'v installed Doc's 9.6.6 Rom and it's going quite well.
1. The GPS has improved but I think it could still be better. I see there is an APP out there called GPS Aids and I was wondering if it would improve my GPS functionality or would it not work with a custom rom like mine?
Are there any methods to make my GPS better? I feel that this is the phone's achilles heal.
2. I now have the option under settings > About Phone > Software Update. I guess Samsung or Google will make Gingerbread avaliable for the SGS soon. When it is will i be upgraded OTA with this software update feature?
3. Any word on when gingerbread is coming out and if/when it will be avaliable in the RomKitchen? I know it's in Beta testing at the moment. Can't be too long before it starts to get released around the globe.
1. You could try a newer rom/modem as they definitely help out with GPS. Currently on JQ1 I get a lock within 5 secs accurate to about 10m. You could also try Faster Fix from the market
2. Upgrade will happen when Samsung releases it.
3. Supposed to be coming out March but no one really knows.

GPS Aids do works on Doc's ROM. What it does is speed up satellite discovery. So in theory you'll see satellites faster, but this doesn't necessarily means that it will be locked faster.
On my SGS it takes an average of 20s to lock using LBSTestMode. Some navigation apps takes longer though (not sure why). Also as utsmaster18 said, fasterfix helps too.
Latest DOC's ROM is 9.9.5 (based on JS8) and I've read (can't remember what thread) that ZSJPG modem is very good. I'm using JS8 + JPY CSC + ZSJPG modem, with Damian Kernel. I have gps aids and faster fix and I do love the GPS performance.

Rumor says it would be out this month. In fact there is a leaked beta ROM already out and many custom ROMS built on top of it. But an official *golden* ROM from Samsung, I think that even they (samsung developers) can't tell for sure.
This is my ROM:
XWJS5_Wipe-v9_6_6-23-29-22-04-03-rM9FJUquQU
I got the GPS working.
First I used an ap called GPS Status to reset my GPS data as Dialing *#*#1472365#*#* does not work for me.
After I cleared all my GPS data I used FasterFix to add the fix although I am not sure if FasterFix was necessary as maybe clearing the data was all I needed to do.
GPS is really good now though.
I also got the compas working in GPS Status. First time I have had a compas work on my phone.

I have a mate with an old Nexus phone and he recieves firmware updates OTA. I never had this with my stock firmware (2.1-Update1) but Telstra probably removed it.
It will be interesting to see if I am able to update this way.
I may be wrong, but I guess Nexus firmware comes from Google itself, while we have to wait for samsung to release it. That's why we probably won't get updates through that menu.
At least on stock froyo (JPY) that menu hasn't worked for me. Not even to tell that I was running the most updated firmware. All I got was errors connecting to the server, or some other words with the same meaning
I'm pretty sure you're right and nexus firmware comes straight from Google.
GPS Aids and Doc's Rom works well together and gave me GPS lock in 2 minutes or so.
That's with JPE modem.
Now using Darky's 9.4, JQ1 modem without GPS Aids and getting locked in under 30 seconds with Google Maps and Navigation.
But I'm not knocking ROM creators around here, GPS Aids and Doc Rom FTW!
And yes, Nexus handsets get OTA directly from Google, no mobile operators in the damn way.
I might try GPS AIDS.
The clearing the data method with GPS Status then using Fast fix has made my GPS super accurate but it takes forever to get a fix and actually start working.
Just another question. Not really related to the OP but my provider has released 2.2 and there is a new modem JP9. Is it worth flashing this to my phone. I am running JL2 and it seems fine. Has any one compared JL2 to JP9?
I've read around the forum and other forums as well about SGS GPS issue. From what I read, seems like SGS users did get their GPS to work but inaccurately.
My SGS has no custom ROM, running on 2.3.3. My GPS seems to not work at all. Every time I enter Navigation, it just gets stuck on "Waiting for location".
A-GPS might help you
Maybe try faster fix

GPS hardware works as a standalone GPS no A-GPS no wireless no network towers .
Take sim out of phone turn off WiFi delete GPS data .
Go outside clear view of sky and use something like GPS Test to pick up satellites .
No satellites after half an hour = hardware fault .
All these aids and GPS fixes do not fix faulty hardware .

The thing is, when ever i starting GPS program (GPStest, GPSstatus, AngryGPS...) the GPS symbol in the status line flashing for 3 second and disappeared... no signal and not even a weak satellite. Nothing. The GPStest keep showing clear windows. I tried every trick i could fine, every server, lots of program, and nothing seems to make this phone to find a single satellite.
When i do the tests with AngryGPS/LBST, the test just doesnt process to anywhere(keep showing me Starting test... or 0/30.. Weird!)

I am on Europe.
The phone is unlocked At&t.

miztaken1312 is right, you'll be hard pressed to get any kind of GPS using JF6. You'll need to go to a custom ROM to get usable GPS. I can't speak for the other ROM's out there but I've had great success with Phoenix(Froyo 2.2) and Mosaic(Gingerbread 2.3)
Ok, i also tried to upgrade to GB 2.3.4 PilotXrom 3.5, and still, the same problem, no GPS signal at all, tests in AngryGps stopped 3 seconds after its start. Could it be a hardware damage? What other Rom should i try? Froyo one?

Yep, 1007 is your problem. I had one as well and traded it in for a refurbed 1011. However if yours is a refurbed 1007 then it shouldn't be a hardware issue.
