This will NOT work in CM5.0b4 as JIT has been disabled entirely
It seems like a lot of people are constantly pulling/editing/pushing build.conf in order to turn JIT on and off, so I threw together a short script to toggle it on and off.
It's nothing elaborate, but it gets the job done. This is meant to work with the build.prop that comes stock with cyanogenmod 5.0b2 but will most likely work with other build.props that have JIT.
Steps to run the script:
1) Download jit.txt, rename it jit.sh
2) If you downloaded from your computer, run "adb push jit.sh /sdcard" or mount your device and copy to your sdcard.
3) In terminal on Nexus One:
$ su
# sh /sdcard/jit.sh
JIT toggled ON
JIT enabled upon reboot
#
You can also set it up in GScript or GScript Lite so you can add an icon on your homescreen to toggle JIT more easily:
1) From command line: mv /sdcard/jit.sh /sdcard/gscript/jit.sh
2) Open GScript
3) Go to Menu->Add Script
4) Go to "Load file"
5) Select jit.sh
Then to make an icon on your homescreen:
1) Long press homescreen
2) Select Shortcuts
3) Select GScript(Lite)
4) Select jit
You must reboot for the changes to take effect after running the script. If you prefer, simply put "reboot" (without quotes) on it's own line at the end of the script and it will reboot automatically. Only do this after you have confirmed that the script works for you.
If you are using Windows, make sure you use the attached jit.txt rather than copying the code from this post. Copying/pasting the code will not work because of Windows CR/LF line breaks.
Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
if grep -q fast /system/build.prop ; then
sed -i s/=int:fast/=int:jit/ /system/build.prop
echo "JIT toggled ON"
echo "JIT enabled upon reboot"
else
sed -i s/=int:jit/=int:fast/ /system/build.prop
echo "JIT toggled OFF"
echo "JIT disabled upon reboot"
fi
exit

Simply push the script to your phone (sdcard, or wherever you please) and run it. For example, put the quoted text into a file called jit.sh, push it to the root of your sdcard, and run "sh /sdcard/jit.sh" from a terminal. You can also set it up in GScript or GScript Lite so you can add an icon on your homescreen to toggle JIT more easily.

Nice - been looking for just this, thanks. As a bit of a n00b, any idea why this doesn't seem to run in GScript Lite? I get the SU request OK, but then nothing - don't see the echo'd text at all, nowt. Running CM5b2 .29 kernel.
Ive installed pauls modaco patch wil this turn jlt off? its annoying me
Thanks for this script !
I just pull, nano, and push it back.
I don't think It's 100% stable.
push/pull? Shoot, I just use vi on build.prop from betterterminal. Don't have to mess with adb at all
Since you need to reboot anyway, couldn't we just put "reboot" in place of "exit"? I'm assuming that's not part of the script to save, since you have "fi" at the end of it. Personally, what I did is save 2 versions of build.prop to my sdcard and then built gscripts to swap 'em out. lol A little more crude, but just as effective.
when i try to run the jit.sh file in terminal i get:
failed: no such file or directoryk3 on /system : not found
sdcard/jit.sh : 13: syntax error: end of file unexpected (expecting 'then")
am i completely retarded?

Yeah, I had the same problem. Remove the su request from superuser.apk. Then, run any script that requires root. Click remember, and allow. It will not work at this point. Back out to the homescreen with the back button, then go back into GScript Lite and run it again. It should work this time.

Not sure. I would assume so, never seen the build.prop that's used but I don't see why it would be any different.

Don't forget, you need to remount /system as rw also. it is a tiny bit of a pain, but I don't see much of a reason to switch back and forth all the time. Thus far I have yet to have any problems with JIT.

The only time I consistently have problems with JIT is when tethering. Otherwise, I have yet to have any issues. I tether frequently, hence the script.
BTW, thanks for Apps2SD(2) and OpenOverclocker. They were very helpful to me at one point.

Hm, strange. I can't duplicate this error. The steps I take are as follows:
1) Cut/paste the quoted code in the original post and save it in a document called jit.sh

Ah, it's the line breaks. Windows uses a pair of CR and LF characters to terminate lines. Unix based system use an LF character only.
You can get a utility to convert the line breaks to unix style line breaks. I'm sure it will come in handy. I'll also upload the jit.sh with proper line breaks to the original post.

Ignore the installation commands, you need to boot in to recovery and push the hosts file to /system/etc/ on the phone.
Adfree works fine. The reason it doesn't work on slide has nothing to do with the app. The hosts file goes in /system/etc/ and since we don't have r/w access to /system, the app can't do what's its supposed to do. It works great I used it the whole time I had a G1, its just cus your phone isn't PROPERLY rooted. Neither is anyone elses til we get that SPL...
Til then you gotta adb push the file thru recovery...
I dunno if you know this, but adfree temporarily d/l's the hosts file to your sdcard, then deletes it when its done. But since it couldn't replace the file on my slide, it left it on the sdcard! All you gotta do is run the app and wait for it to error out, then go get the file and put it on your pc and adb push to /system/etc...

Actually, its rooted just fine (you can run anything you want as uid 0). The SPL security has nothing to do with root.
It is like saying you don't have the proper key to a door just because after you open it there is a guard standing there not letting you in to the next room.
Just being picky...
i think what he meant is that with all the other phones most of us have had we had an SPL to flash once we had done the original tweaks(or before on some phones) so as of right now i agree that the phone is not rooted properly yet as i don't have full control over the phone whenever i want, i want to be able to mv stuff to system partition from android terminal
just being picky...
could anyone please post the actual commands? im new to adb and wold really appreciate the help adfree is the entire reason i even rooted
among others but it was the number one
adb push hosts /system/etc

Other than removing a few of the stock apps, this is one of the things I'm looking forward to rooting for, I loved it on my G1.
With all of the folks having so much trouble rooting this sucker though, I may wait awhile.
it said this
' failed to copy 'hosts' to '/system/etc': Permission denied '

same thing happened to me. but as falken mentioned before, you have to make sure the system is mounted before running the command. so..
boot into recovery.
go to 'partitions'.
select 'mount /system'.
run adb command "adb push hosts /system/etc".
reboot system.
*you might wanna might wanna be sure the comp sees the device in recovery before running the command via "adb devices". i do this before i do any adb'ing.
*be sure the hosts file is in the root of your sdk directory, otherwise your command will vary.

BINGO! Thanks!!!
A soft brick, in this case, is when you make a bad edit to your framework files and the phone won't fully boot and starts flashing a red LED at you.
There is one catch, you only get about 1-2min to do all of this before the phone reboots on its own. If that happens, do SuperOneClick steps again and continue where you left off. Better yet, build a script to do it all for you
Power off your device
Enter Fastboot:
Hold Volume down + power until you see Fastboot at the top left
Use volume down to scroll down to "Early USB Enumeration" (only shows one item at a time, if you pass it, keep going down, up selects)
Press Volume up to select
Wait for ADB to enable, run "Shell Root" from SuperOneClick, wait until it says you have root.
Enter adb shell from command line, You should have root(#) access:
adb shell
Mount the system directory as read/write:
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p12 /system
Make a new directory on /data for your recovery files: (sdcard wont be mounted yet)
mkdir /data/recover
Exit adb shell:
exit
Push your known working files to the new directory:
adb push /path/to/local/file.ext /data/recovery
Enter adb shell from command line:
adb shell
Copy your newly pushed recovery files to their proper location:
cp /data/recover/services.jar /system/framework
cp /data/recover/framework.jar /system/framework
cp /data/recover/famework-res.apk /system/framework
Reboot:
reboot now
Thanks! Extremely happy you are deving for this phone

I would just use the tar solution, much easier to deal with.
You can also use ADB, adb pull /system system
Also, the retail dump I did matched my phone dump bit for bit, as long as you have that you should be fine.

One last question.
Once I deodex my /system/app, should I just do a adb push app /system/app and then rm /system/app/*.odex ?

Crazy....mine just would not reboot. But good to know that there is a way to recover. Love the phone but hate Motorola. Wish that it was easy as the Cappy.
Cool stuff. I may snatch the framework off the phone in stock form and make a batch package for this so folks can easily just double click to restore their framework and system app folder.

I have done this several times now, it works
I soft bricked my Atrix earlier this morning, and used this to recover. The time limit is a serious pain!
I ended up needing to separate /system into 5 separate pushes of 30MB each in order to get them done in time.
Oddly, after restoring everything, the phone is no longer associated with my motoblur account, and I can't add it.
Also, I think there my be some files in /system that are unaccounted for by the filesystem, as there is 70MB more than what is present.
Edit:
Restoring the system fixed both above problems.
Like many, I have CM installed on the Touchpad, with that frakking wifi problem plaguing me.
I don't mind redoing my connection every time I take the tablet; however where is the wifi settings "kept" in the file system? I need to delete the profile in order to redo the connection.
Can someone help? There are so many bazillion posts mentioning wifi that nothing of value can be found.
you can see the wifi settings in settings>wireless and networks>wifi settings and you can make your touchpad forget the connection settings by holding on the name of the connection and hitting forget on the pop up. after that you connect to your connection as if for the first time.

Yep I tried doing that, and I have Force Close problems on the Wi-Fi menu, when the device does not connect. It's as if internally, there is a loop of something happening.
I thought somewhere in the filesystem bowels, there is a way to delete it "directly" without going via the UI. Thanks for trying to help, I appreciate it
Anyone knows if there is such a file somewhere?
i had this problem two days ago. i changed the channel of my router to 2 and restarted my touchpad into webos and back into android and made my touchpad to forget the network and reconnected it and i don't know what happened but that worked. wish i could be of more help to you, hope you get it working sooner so you could enjoy the android goodness.

HOW DO I CLEAR OUT *ALL* MY WIFI SETTINGS AND START FRESH?
If you find that your wifi is "strobing" on and off, or you wish to completely wipe out all wifi settings, you can do this in one of three ways:
THE "RIGHT" WAY (USING ADB):
adb shell rm -rf /data/misc/wifi && reboot
(this will remove the settings and then force a reboot)
THE "I-DON'T HAVE ADB INSTALLED" WAY:
From the Terminal app.
# rm -rf /data/misc/wifi && reboot
(similar command as above. The # is a prompt-- don't type that part. If you see a $ prompt instead, type "su" (no quotes) and it should become a #)

true. I'm with ya, just throwing it out there. ADB would be the preferred method but for those that are not familiar with ADB, then an app would be easier, although i don't know if that app is doing the same thing as the ADB approach. if it is then win-win. if not, and problems still exsist, then ADB is an alternative approach.

Well for one thing if you disabled/uninstall Unified Search, it allows google search to work correctly in the launcher, also without root you can replace the amazon keyboard with the google keyboard and get voice search.
Edit: We need to probably install Google play services properly to get Google Play Games to work correctly but I am not sure.
The ability to install apps depending on root is awesome.

You can use titanium backup, and remove it like that. I would make a backup firs though just in-case.
Also, I need help trying to unhide the firelauncher process. I have the command here "adb shell pm unhide [package:com.amazon.firelauncher]"
But I need the other command first so ADB can talk to my tablet. Because I ran the command, and it just says "true" when it should say "false".

Working Launcher replacement thanks to @diegocr and @Awesomeslayerg ! Here's the steps:
1. See @diegocr post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63599598&postcount=23 and download "boot-firelauncher.img"
2. Enable USB debugging
3. Install your launcher of choice!
4. On your computer, run
adb reboot bootloader
Click to collapse
5. Once your tablet reboots in to fastboot, run on your computer (if you are not in the same directory as boot-firelauncher.img, put the full path):
fastboot boot boot-firelauncher.img
Click to collapse
6. Tablet will reboot
7. Once booted open an adb shell:
adb shell
Click to collapse
8. To back up the existing app, run:
cp /system/priv-app/com.amazon.firelauncher/com.amazon.firelauncher.apk /sdcard/Download/com.amazon.firelauncher.apk
Click to collapse
9. Then nuke it!
rm /system/priv-app/com.amazon.firelauncher/com.amazon.firelauncher.apk
Click to collapse
10. Now, run to restart your device:
reboot
Click to collapse
Confirmed working on my tablet with FireOS 5.0.1.
Enjoy!

If you are already rooted you don't need to do all that stuff.
Just adb shell
su
mount -o remount,rw /system
rm -r /system/priv-app/com.amazon.firelauncher or whatever the package is called.
Reboot and it's done.
Remember to install a launcher before this.

Will this work if I hid the process with ADB before hand? If not, how do I unhide it? What command would I use before "adb shell pm unhide [package:com.amazon.firelauncher]"
Don't know, try if it works hiding, but I doubt it.
I want to replace the hosts file with the one of my Lenovo S660 (China phone). The S660 hosts file is about a mile long and has entries like "0.0.0.0 bad.ad.server" - a very basic but effective way to avoid a lot ads, even at apps. I have not yet took a closer look but I think I would create a mix of both files for the fire.
So, what are the steps?
I have done similar things to my rooted Sony Experia Tipo concerning modifying files at /system, which is mounted RO as default. So I remounted it RW with ES-Explorer, modified what I had to and mounted RO with ES-Explorer again.
I wonder, if this is ok, because of the security means the fire/android has.
I took a chance and I was successfull.
I attached the unchanged hosts file from my Lenovo S660 /system/etc/ as hosts.lenovo.zip file. The fire hosts has just 1 line: 127.0.0.1 localhost. The lenovo's hosts has 25858 lines.
Code:
- unzip hosts.lenovo.zip -> you get host.lenovo
- rename hosts.lenovo to hosts
- connect fire
- adb push hosts /data
- adb shell
- $ su -
- # cd /data
- # chmod 644 hosts
- # exit
- $ exit
- ES Explorer
- Enable root explorer
- remount /system rw
- go to /data
- mark hosts
- cut hosts (to memory)
- go to /system/etc
- mark hosts
- rename hosts to hosts.old
- insert hosts from memory
- remount /system ro
- exit ES Explorer
done.
should work, use at own risk.
Note: You cannot chmod 644 at /mnt/sdcard1 because it is vfat there, that's why you use /data.
Note: You cannot write to /system/etc while at adb shell, even if it is mounted RW, that's why you have to use ES Explorer which will ask you to choose the path with android overlay window - which makes it work (at least my experience).
If you have apps which showed ads before, then you might keep on seeing the very last forever. Or a broken link sign. Or even a popop with broken link sign. Or your ads hosts is missing at the lenovo hosts file and you keep on seeing ads. There even my be websites you cannot visit anymore - which I have not yet experienced, but the risk exists, or will come.
If interested, take a look at http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm for more information and use for your windows or linux pc.
If you don't like it you can go back, you have a copy of your old hosts file.

Check out the adaway app (open source). It blocks ads through the host file just like you're doing except it puts the host file in place for you, combines host files from a couple different sources (running de-duplication on them) & auto updates your host file as new ad severs are added or removed. Absolutely beats rolling your own host file manually.
That is new information to me, thanks.
