[Think Tank] Modify Kernel to fix charging - Droid Incredible Android Development

I haven't actually looked at the battery driver or even the kernel for that matter, but does it specifically state the cutoff voltages for charging the battery? If it does, we should compare those to what the phone is charging the battery to when the phone is off and make them match. Hell if you want to live on the wild side bump it up another .05 - .075V or so...

Just a question.....but do you know what you are talking about??
Froyo seemed to solve the charging 'problem' for me, then again I never had a charging problem.

Erm, how did it fix it? We still have that problem.

I believe what he is talking about is modifying the kernel to allow the battery to fully charge when powered on rather than leaving the "buffer" which requires the bump charge to get the extra 10% or so out of the battery. I'd definitely like to see this as well, but I've found performing the recalibration did help a bit.

Disclaimer: I'm a noob and don't know ****!
However, it would seem if htc (or google), put code in the kernel to prevent the phone from charging to 100% while turned on, I'm sure they had good reason. My guess would be to keep the phone from over heating.
It would seem that if the phone is on and draining the battery, but at the same time you're trying to charge the battery, achieving that last few percent might be difficult and could take considerable more time, and thus getting hotter.
Just a guess though.

I'll look at the battery driver when I get home (currently at work), but I have seen devices where charging limits were invoked directly in the kernel. These could be modified if they are.
On the issue of heat, manufacturers play it VERY safe. It looks bad if someone is charging their phone in their car during the summer and the battery cooks off in the passenger seat. I'd be fairly comfortable pushing the battery to a little bit higher voltage than it is right now.

What about the charging SPEED? Myself and several others have noticed that Froyo ROMs charge at a much slower rate, plugged in to ac power, compared to 2.1 Rom. For me, it takes about twice as long to charge. Is this something that could also be addressed with a kernel fix? I literally went from being able to charge from ~10% to full in about 90 mins, to now taking about 4 hours on Froyo.

The 2.15 radio probably broke the phone's ability to differentiate between the wall-charger (fast) and normal USB (slow). The reason I say "radio" and not "kernel" is because it charges slowly when powered off as well. Hopefully the radio included in the upcoming OTA will fix this.

I had the slow charging problem on the 2.05 radio as well but doesn't change much about what's being said about a potential fix.
Anyone able to confirm that this (something in the radio) is the reason?
Hope the OTA comes soon so I can get back to recharging in a timely fashion.

Apparently you are one of the users that were lucky enough not to have this issue. This thread is not for you. Move on. And btw, Froyo did not fix this problem. Again, nothing for you to see here, move on.
For the rest of us who are interested in solving this issue we will continue to put ideas out there in the hope that a smart one figures this out. Until then, we will keep reading about how fortunate some people are and how some other unfortunate people are willing to work on this. Thanks OP.

the difference between bump charging and not never really affected me because the phone charged so damn fast, that just plugging it in for a few minutes helped out a ton. but now with froyo, it literally take 5 to 6 times longer to charge to 100%. its ridiculous

i got sick of letting my phone charge overnight then 10 min after i unplug it in the morning its down to 92%. and unless you charge it while the phone is off it rapidly drops all the way down to like 80% before it starts decreasing normally, at least for me. so i started turning it off and topping it off in the mornings for about 30-45 min before i would leave for work, doing this i noticed a HUGE difference in my battery life through out the day. that got to be a pain because sometimes i just don't have time to do that in the mornings, so i ended up buying an external charger and an extra battery. this way charge the extra battery overnight on the external charger, pop the fresh battery in the phone in the morning and i'm ready to go. but all this could be avoided if the phone would charge the battery as good as the $2 wall charger, so if you could find a fix for this battery problem it would be awesome.

I had slow charging with 2.05 and 2.15 radios, unfortunately...

Did any of you that are having this issue root and install froyo immediately after buying the phone? a friend of mine is having a similar issue. Have you tried battery recalibration? Also I would recommend checking your up time and awake times in battery info and see if there's something keeping your phone awake while charging . One last thing, try installing battery save mode toggle from market.

I've been messing with the slow charge issue all night tonight, and as far as I can tell, it is not the 2.xx radio, and it must be the .32 kernel.
Slow charging started for me when I installed the first 2.2 leak which had the 2.05 radio, and remained on the the 2nd 2.2 leak and 2.15 radio. Before that I had the 2.05 radio on 2.1 and charging was normal, tonight I rolled back to complete stock 2.1/1.0 radio and charging was normal again, I kept the 1.0 radio and installed a 2.2 rom, charging slowed again, changed to 2.15 radio, still slow, so I installed the old CM6 test 8 rom which was used the old kernel with the broken camera, and sure enough, charging was fast again.
I'd really love to figure this out, if any of you get on IRC and want to discuss this, /msg digi

Great work. on testing at least...
Is there anyone out there who can help fix this? I hate these slow charge times.

I thought the issue was that the phone starts running off battery one its at 100%, not that it can't charge the last 10%...am I misunderstanding that?
I've tested this by taking it off the charger as soon as the light turns green...seems I get much better battery life this way.

This doesn't quite explain why some of us have had no problems at all either. Maybe an issue with newer devices but personally my device has been up for over 31 hours since charge and haven't noticed this issue but a friend of mine has complained of it, and he recently bought his device. Tomorrow after I charge my device I'll post with findings after charging.

this has to do with 2.2 and new kernels. not stock 2.1.

might be time for a new battery. It should take 30 to 45 mins to charge. And it should last longer than that. How much time do you spend playing games ect. Gps also is a battery drainer. Also alot of data usage.

My battery can last all or most of the day with moderate use on Android.
If you are running off an SD card, try booting back into windows for a day or so to see if you have a similar battery problem there too. Actually, windows battery life was MUCH worse for me. The difference is that Android does not wake the screen for Calendar alerts or text messages like WinMo does... though in Android you do still get the vibrate or sound alert.

win mo is actually quite ROM dependent (NFSFAN's ROMs got awesome battery life). android is pretty kernel dependent. if you are charging overnight, and using latest zimage/kernel, and turing off syncing (background data), and that is the battery life you are getting, you need a new battery.
i use gps a lot as i work as a field technician but i don't have gps turned on all the time while im driving as the screen shuts off by itself in a minute or so. maybe gps is still working even with the screen shut off? and it's a nand install so trying with winmo is not possible. i had much better battery life with winmo for sure. if i turn off the syncing will i still be able to use gps?

It's the kernel. you know the file you rename RUU_signed and you flash.
I am definitely having this problem as well, and the charge does not last very long it seems either. Was much, MUCH better in the Windows Mobile builds I was using previously.
I am on Bell using the basic HTC Touch
Same problem here. Brand new battery on bell.
Yeah, although battery life is positively improved and pretty decent now, there is definitely still something funky going on with charging. I still don't rely on / believe when the phone says it is fully charged. It happens too quickly to be possibly true.
I have the exact same issue and it is absolutely a problem with charging within Android. I have two identical batteries. One was fully charged in winmo before I flashed - I took it out and swapped for the other one. Flashed it with that battery in and charged it overnight. It only lasted about a half-day. Came home and swapped out for my other fully-charged (in winmo) battery, and it lasted for more than a day. Same settings, same use. After it discharged, I recharged overnight from Android and it behaved the same as the first - discharging in about a half-day.
What gives?
I'm curious what builds people are using? I'm totally new to this but I'm using warm donut with voguimg-240x320-06-04-10.nbh. It seems that nbh isn't posted on the sourceforge site yet - maybe I should switch back to an older one?
Maybe kernel problem.
I'm experiencing the same problem as everyone.
Lately my battery suddenly drops from 100% to 4%.
When I put to charge, it reaches 100% very fast. Should reach only 5%
I think it can be a problem in the kernel.
Now, i'm trying to solve it. If I find something I'll share with you
I can not determine which kernel brought the problem...
23/04 - 16:16 (GMT-3 - Rio de Janeiro) - Trying an old kernel
23/04 - 17:00 - Nothing. But came to the conclusion that the problem is with the battery.
Battery really "thinks" its 100% charged, since it accepts flash a nbh without the need of the phone is charging. And this only happens when the battery is at least 50% charged...
(sorry about my english. I'm brazilian and still learning english)

Battery Problem

My phone suddenly just shuts down when I'm using it... not a "powering off" but just out of nowhere turns off
Anyone know what the problem might be?
I've had this same issue before, so I bought a new battery last month and it worked great until just last week...
I've tried resetting the battery stats....nothing....
The battery still fully charges and shows the correct percentage when I plug in the charger to use...
Could it be the ROM or battery issue?
....I'm currently using cannon's rom... 2.2.1
Anyone know how to fix?..... thanks

Something to take note, What are you doing when it does this?
-Surfing net on the phone
-Listening to music
-Charging
-Tethering
Keeping in mind that the phone will shut its self down (it should) if your battery starts to over heat. On my Hero the charge light flashes before it shuts down and it gets really hot to the touch. Also at higher heat temps, overall battery life suffers.
my phones shuts down usually when wifi is on and im sirfing or using youtube app or google maps(every time i use wifi for a while this happens...)
it also shuts down rarely on calls and sometimes when im trying to flash a new rom...
it doesnt powers on until i connect it on AC...
I REALLY NEED HELP...
ps:if i change the battery will my problem been solved?

it turns off randomly...even when im just browsing through the home screens... a full charge will last me like 5 minutes max.... no matter what im doing an the battery doesnt overheat at all...
and when i plug it in to the charger, it shows the correct percentage.. well at least an estimate of what it could be (for about 5 min of use before shut down= 95%)
I have the same problem, It is extremely frustrating.
The shutdowns would happen randomly during surfing the net or using google maps. It would shut down out of no where and it would be impossible to turn back without being plugged into a charger since the phone thinks it battery is at 0 even it was just charged to full before the shutdown. I tried to calibrate the battery but it would just shut down while I'm trying to burn through the charge with the screen on. This is the such a nuisance, can't even get through one day.
I am using biffmod 1.8 so I don't know if this is a rom related problem.
I'm havuing the exact same problem. Even with a full battery, the pgone will shut down when I do anything more than a text or two here and there. When I put it on the charger I will still have a significant amount of power left. I've tried doing full wipes and changing roms. I think it might actually be related to the radio. This began after I updated the radio. It would get stck on formatting the cache. I tried going back to the old radio, but the problem has persisted.. and it also got stuck on formatting cache...
I hope someone can help with this bc it pretty much renders the phone useless when it's not being charged. =\
try change the battery...this solve my prob
you could try recalibrating the battery.
let your phone die.
plug it in for so long that you are 100% sure that it is full.
boot to recovery wipe battery stats.
boot normal
use it and let it die.
recharge again until its full BEFORE booting it.
if you sure its full boot normal.
if you follow this cycle some times it should be fine.
Only issue: you have to wait long until its full and you always have to be near an ac
i've tried re-callibration.. guess i will have to get another battery..
i don't think it's the battery though bc others with the same problem said that the problem persisted after getting a new battery.. =\ we'll see.. thanks for the replies.

[SOLVED] Incorrect Battery Values

This seems to be quite a common and somewhat obscure at the same time.
Many people have reported installing a new rom or even just powering up their phone and seeing a battery % much different from what they expect. Most often much lower than it should be. Evidently this corrects itself after some time but it's a real problem if your display reads <15% because you really have to plug it in then, even with you know you have 90% battery!
So, here's the solution after testing it under different circumstances over a few days:
Simply boot your phone when it is not plugged in to a power source and battery % will be accurate.
That simple. Silly LG!
So, if you flash a new rom, unplug the USB cable before you reboot...
Hit 'Thanks' below for the 50 reboots I did to prove this...

Even while charging with the phone shut down, pulling it off the charger and then booting this happens. On my phone I have experienced it on all MCR's.
It's really not a big deal as long as the battery performs as Stock 10b, that build has been stable batterywise on my phone. But staying stock isn't too much fun
Well, every time I charge, whether I reboot/shut down before unplugging or not, my charge always maxes out at 96%.
Annoying and I'd like it sorted if at all possible.
Anyone?..........lol

also the battery reset in cwm didnt fix the loading till 97% w/e percentage.
when i install the stock rom it allows me to load it till 100% though pretty weird stuff -.-

I had a replacement netbook battery that could only max to 90%. So, over the weekend, I practically drained it to 0% (not a healthy practice for Li-ion batteries but I was desperate). Took out the battery for a while, and then recharged for several hours. Well, it seems to get up to 100% now.
Perhaps you could try using the the phone until it very low on battery before recharging. Maybe the charging process in the phone needs some sort of recalibration. But should not be doing this all the time as it will reduce Li-ion battery longevity.
Let mine totally die last night so it wouldn't even turn on at all. Took out and replaced battery and then charged it overnight and hey-presto, when I unplugged it this morning, it stayed at 100%.
Solved indeed....for me anyway. Feel free to try the same and post your results.

I'll be sure to try your tip man. But not easy drain it completely when I always need the phone :=)
I guys! I've got the same problem.
I think that it could depend on the "full battery popup FIX" that Paul introduced in his roms by the FR8.
So I would like to ask Paul if you can create a patch to remove that fix. Just to try it!
According to me, incorrect battery amount depend on a wrong voltage read error (offset introduced?) by the rom.
In my case, I have followed many times battery wype procedure without positive issue. The matter leaves only by flashing original roms.
I think that if Paul have written a wrong battery values range (to delete the battery full popup) that can be traduced in an incorrect battery status displays.

Perhaps, but you can not conclude it was introduced by MCR. You logic is wrong there.
Even without "battery full popup fix" it doesn't work good...
Battery level, when unpluged, stay at 100% for 2 minutes afterwards drop down fast until 85% then drain normally...
I'm getting huge battery display problems no matter what I do.
When I took it off the charger this morning, it said I had 100%... thats fair enough. However it stayed at 100% all day, so to "refresh" it this evening I restarted the phone, and low and behold it now says I have 27% left. But again, it's just sticking at that value, even with me now plugging the phone into the wall to charge. It simply says "Charging (27%)" and won't budge, likely until I restart the phone again.
Sometimes it works fine, it seemed to be doing ok last night before I put it on the charger. Any tips/suggestions? Is this something likely to be fixed when the Gingerbread update rolls around?
This is my first real smartphone, and am fairly annoyed as its giving me a fair few problems that I've not had from other electronic devices.
As I stated in another thread, I had the same issue while on MoDaCo Fr12. However, after reverting back to stock, the battery percentage is spot-on and I'm getting up to 48 hours use out of it.
Draw your own conclusions.

That sounds super, but I'm still on stock too. About the only things of note I've done are root and switching to Launcher Pro. Oh, and Clockwork Mod of course. Perhaps a complete reboot is needed, we'll see how it goes.
Saying that - since charging, my phone has been at 90% all evening, until right this moment when it changed to 89%. It's less than I'd expect on this type of phone for 3-4 hours use (or lack thereof, I've barely touched it), but it's a start eh?
Welcome to the world of smartphones my friend. I've had various handsets over the last 4 years from iphone to android and a day and a half out of the battery is about average......at best. ;-)

Just to clarify, what I meant in my previous post was that I was expecting to battery to drop a lot more than it did. The fact that it only went down 1% in several hours of use prompted me to think that the battery value was messed up.
As it is, I've not charged my phone in the 36 hours since, and it tells me I have 73% battery left. Perhaps it is performing extremely well after all? If that's the case then I'm more than happy with it, but being the pessimist I'm still expecting the phone to turn off sometime with the battery reporting incorrect values.

with charger in 100% charger out 97% recently

did not have this problem befor flashin jvs but now when im charging it indicates 100% battery and directly when i unplug it it goes down to 97 did not do this before flashin 2.3.5 and I even flashed 2.3.4 now! I managed to get 98 by disconnecting and connecting charger many times. Why?
I have darky's 10.2 Exrtreme or final - can't remember
I have the same problem. But even worse mine sometimes only charges to 60 or 65%. I can get a full charge after several unplugs and re-plug but it takes a while.
The big problem is once it fully charges it seems like the phone stops charging completely and then begins to drain out - should it not maintain the full charge even if left charging at full?
Any help please.
Thanks

This is not normal, although a known and common bug.

my phone is using build jvq -not sure if that makes a difference. I am new to all of this. Had a friend help me with the flashing. Anyway I didnt think my issue was normal - its a pain because when I charge my phone overnight - I cant simply unplug and take it away with a full charge.
Any ideas how to rectify this?
Thanks,

I did some more reading. Apparently my problem is a bug with respect to SGS and gingerbread. Once the phone reaches full charge - it stops charging and even though its still plugged in. At this point the phone drains (presumably like normal depending on what you have running in background).
At this point the only fix is to flash back to froyo or I think charging the phone while powered off would work too. Not much of a fix but at least when I wake up in the morning its fully charged.
For others with the same problem as me see this thread:

If anyone else has a better alternative I am all ears.

[Q] battery issues....four hour charge time...help!

ok, I recently replaced my bionic due to a shattered screen. the one verizon sent me didn't come with a battery so I'm using the same old one. so when I rooted my phone on ics, a couple weeks later I noticed that my phone was taking awhile to recharge. with the battery hd app it said that from about ted percent it would take nearly 4 hours to charge! as opposed to the usual hour, hour an a half. then I updated to jelly bean an due to my internal storage becoming unmounted, I had to fxz an lost root altogether. so after getting my internal storage back an waiting what seemed like a month for a root exploit, my battery was back to charging normally, which was pretty sweet. so today I booted ubuntu an rooted my bionic using the samba exploit recreated by the master genius of moto exploits himself, all hail Dan! after playing around an getting back to my old setup I drained a full battery. I plugged in an yet again battery hd. is reporting a 4 hour charge time, plugged into ac! so my question is, does anyone know what could be causing this?! from what I know so far it seems that having root access is the cause. but I can't put the two together an understand how that is an I don't have the kinda time for a 4 hour wait on a charge....somebody help!
Try to delete the battery stats. Maybe the phone is traiting the battery like a 10000mah one and recharges it a while.
Let me know if it worked!
yea i tried that right off the bat. in recovery, with a battery calibration app, and manually. nothin helps
It could be one of two things: one, there could be a problem with your ROM's battery app, therefore displaying incorrect data. Another issue could be the battery itself, as these batteries degrade over time so it could have gone flat and no longer hold an efficient charge.

hopeully its just the rom. i'm installing safestrap right now so i can jump over to another one and see how the battery acts there, maybe help narrow it down. an now i'm thinking it probly is the rom as the battery holds a charge like it always has. it just charges super slow. if i use the wifi tether or download any big files such as a zip file for a rom, it actually drains the battery very slowly while plugged in to ac. around 1 percent every five or ten min, depending how much i have goin on at the time. i clearly remember when it started happening. i checked once and it showed a normal charge time between 1 an 2 hours. i fiddled around did some things, of which i now cant remember what i did (install apps for example) an ten minutes later it was in this state where it takes 4 hours to charge. i've tried deleting apps, calibrating the battery, hopefully it works normal on a different rom its turning out to be quite the inconvience. Thanks for you help and input!!

ok so I installed a different rom on the safe system using safe strap an I was still having issues. tried a different rom and same thing. I went back to the unsafe side and did a master reset on the stock rom and it seems to have fixed the problem. I'm curious to see what it is um doing that's causing it as this is the second time its happened. gonna pay close attention to the possibility of it happening again to hopefully pin point the origin.

If you tried various versions of different ROMs, and you're still experiencing the same issues, it's probably an issue with the hardware, so I would check the battery to make sure.
its back to normal now. But I'm still pretty curious as to how my stock rom was causing the problem across different roms even using safestrap. an fxz fixed her right up
