Hi,
Few month ago, my N1 falled on the street and the touch screen broked. I ordered a new one, dissassembled the phone to replace it, reassembled and everything was working fine.
Then one week ago, i dissasembled it again to clean some (a lot of) dust that went under the screen. Now everything is still working except the GPS.
GPS test doesn't show me any satellite, nothing... it just say "GPS on"
I'm using cyanogen 6.0 rc3.
Does anyone knows where to look inside the phone to check if something is broken ?

Have you tried a couple of different ROM / kernel combinations to make sure it's not a software issue?
Well i was using kang o rama 1.0 b2 with an intersecraven kernel, then i switched to the last service pack of kang o rama (so based on cyano 6.0 rc3) with the kernel that comes with it.
I think if there was a problem with gps in the the cyano / kang o rama, it will be widely reported here. And the GPS was the only thing that always worked fine in almost all roms /kernel i have tried.

Many users report problems with GPS on RC3. Check that thread.
The GPS problem occured days before upgrading to RC3. I installed RC3 only to see if it fixes something but nope.
People on the thread says that with the RC3, it's quite long to get GPS lock, about 5 min. For me, it's impossible to get any GPS lock, even after half an hour, outside during a sunny day.
The problem started to show right after dissambling the phone, not after changing software. So i suppose i did something wrong while reassembling.
if you made a nandroid you can try flashing it back... as gerikss said, many users are having gps issues on CMRC3
heya,
I was having GPS problems as well with my first Nexus One - turned out to be hardware problems, had to send it back.
I installed GPS Status from the Market, and mine wasn't able to see any satellites - is yours able to see any satellites?

Hmm, it sounds like you've put yours through the wringer though...haha...and taking it apart? Yeah, not sure if warranty will repair that for you. You can give it a shot?
Cheers,
Victor

The problem is not in the phone but the RC3 build which is widely used right now. Change it and I GUARANTEE it will work fine. FYI.. Rodriguez, Cyanogen, and Kang all use the build.
Is my english that bad ? My GPS problem started to occur with RC2 ! then i installed RC3. And they started right after dissambling my phone, not after any kernel / rom / radio / software change.
Like victorhooi said, GPS test program (or any gps diagnostic) is giving me no signal.
No matter i dissambled it or not, my phone is not under warranty, I got it offered at a google conférence.
I guess i'll have to live with only 3G location until a new phone will make me want to leave my N1.

most likely if the gps is showing "on" as you stated in post 1 then the gps isn't "broken", but most likely a loose connection. Some problems are solved flashing back to factory rom. If the gps was broken it wouldn't activate.
this post fixed it for me.

Hi,
flashed modaco r21 with stock froyo kernel, did what's told in the previous post (in fast, it was already like this). Still no GPS. GPS Test shows me no satellite.
I tell you, it's inside the phone. Maybe something is really broken, maybe just not connecte something correctly. But i want to know where to look before opening it again.
I'm having problems with my GPS too. I remember that it used to work well with FRF91. I still have locked bootloader and I rooted yet. Most of the time, it takes me a while to get a GPS lock, 5-10 minutes. Sometimes, it never gets a lock. Any ideas?
Update: I fixed my problem with the link in post#11.

In the recent cyanogen roms since 4.19 which required flashing with the htc radio my gps has stopped getting fixes. I am limited to only cell tower location. Maybe this is a radio issue? If so what is the best radio alternative which will work with cyanogen roms? I need my gps back. Thanks.
I just tested gps on my dream with cyan 4.2.1 on top of the htc flash. Working with no problems, even indoors. If you don't get any better tips, I would suggest installing again, and this time wipe ext3 partition in addition to wiping, and don't restore anything from backup for root users etc. before you check the GPS.
Hi
This may not be a tip, but i had the same problems when i upgraded rom, I had copilot and Ndive that worked prior, But stopped after urgrading rom to CYAN 4.1.999
Only solution i found was to try other alternatives, the only one i got to work flawlessly was Sygic mobile maps 9 V7.71, gets a fix almost immediatley and works Perfecto.
Hope this helps
I have the exact same problem!
I flashed cyan 4.21 and stopped getting GPS fix. I wiped, wiped ext3 and installed enomther AOSP 1.6 without the expansion pack. I can't get a gps fix anyway...

Christ, thats an ignorant post
Cyanogen does not "mess up basic functionality", 99.9% of people running his roms have no such problems, myself included. It was probably something you missed or did wrong in the process. Did you follow the steps in his first post carefully, it is a more convoluted process coming from 4.1.11 because of the changes required by Google. In any case, rooting and installing custom roms has its risks and you chose to accept those risks, stop trying to blame someone else when it goes wrong. Take some responsibility, be constructive and try to find a solution instead of crying about it.
Incidentally, the reason Google had an issue with cyanogen was, completely legitimately, because his roms included some of their closed source apps (mail, youtube, market etc) hence why his new roms do not include those and Google are fine with him now. Try reading about it before you shoot your mouth off
I'm trying to work out the problem right now. I wiped again and installed another rom - not cyanogen. The problem is still here. It seems to be a problem that not only I have. It's quite possible that I, and others having the same issue, haven't followed the instructions correctly or did something else wrong.
Try flashing the radio

Well, seeing as my GPS just got a fix indoors with Cyanogen's 4.2.2, I think the problem is with you.
Now, without posting what you have done to get your phone to the state it is in now, how in the world can we help figure out what went wrong? This really seems like an isolated incident, and obviously not one that is suggestive of Cyanogen's rom being faulty (pretty damn insulting of you to blame him) since you have the problem even after flashing a rom that you give so much praise to for being 'stable'.
So..... how about you reconsider what you might have done to your phone, and try some troubleshooting...
1. When I am having issues with my GPS, sometimes I find it helps to disable GPS (both wireless and sat), reboot my phone, re-enable them, and try again to get a fix.
2. Use GPS Status2 to see if it is connecting to any sats at all.
See what happens... Who knows, maybe there is something wrong with your phone (ever imagine that?).
Not trying to be rude, or bash you, but you were pretty rude and bashing towards Cyanogen, and then you said you had the problem with someone else's rom too...

First off. I have tried both steps you suggested.
With gps status I can see 4-5 satelites and the lower right of the display says 0 sats. So I can't get fix, the gps itself works. Could be a problem with gps.cfg, I'm going to look at it now.
The issue occured right after I flashed cyanogen 4.2.1 stable. Even afer wiping entirely and flashing another rom I have the same issue, So I suppose that that the problem might be radio related. I actually consider there might be a problem with the phone, but a user who started this thread also had similar problem after going to cyanogen build. Maybe he did the same mistake as I did. Many times I have installed roms and had no issues while others had them - sometimes they occur sometimes they dont - depending on what spl/radio you are on, even what network you are on and what ROM you are coming from. Sorry for being that rude, I realize that now...

We all get upset when things don't work that we expect to, my suggestion about that is to go back and clean up your posts before Cyanogen reads them (hopefully) so as to avoid pissing him off.. He has given us so much, and we don't want to alienate him on XDA...
Anyway, about seeing satellites but not getting a fix, have you tried re-flashing the radio?
You said you have wiped, and flashed two different ROMS. The possibility of it still being a software issue are slim (but still there), if the radio doesn't help... it just may be a hardware thing.
I have never had mine get locks on satellites and not lock-in my position.
I know this stuff has been mentioned, but here is your basic troubleshooting process. Complicated, I know. Shouldn't take all day.
Download GPSStatus2 from the market and check to see if it is connecting to any satellites at all.
a) Go outside, away from buildings and trees, and open GPSStatus2. If it connects to 1 satellite, your receiver is working and it's probably some fluke of atmospheric interference (rain, dust, clouds, temperature, vapor, fog all affect microwave transmission; even air quality) that it can't connect to more. Try some different areas with different weather.
b) If it connects to zero, reinstall radio image from the link a few posts up.
c) Still no luck, go all the way back to stock firmware (flash OriginalSPL if you have DangerSPL installed, then RC29) and let it update to Donut, try again.
d) If it's still not working, your GPS happened to randomly die or something. Call T-Mobile cause you need a warranty replacement. They will send you a new phone, you send the old one back.
You know... if you are only trying google maps, try downloading some alternatives. One off the top of my head is RMaps.
I'm flashing the radio now. I have tried the other steps. I tried to get a fix from different locations, now I'm in the mountains and the device has a clear view to the north, where most sattelites are supposed to be... Yes it could be a hardware issue. As you can see another userr ATINsa, who started the topic has the same issue.
still problems
I don't know why you are attacking that guy. There is a problem. I had it on my old dream which was just stolen and replaced. And now I have it with the replacement. Prior to 4.19 and the radio you had to flash to keep cyan cool with google I had no problems. Google tracks, my maps editor, and google maps have a problem. When using wifi can sometimes connect more. The old cyan roms worked fined. Please don't try to explain to me how to use a gps. I have reflashed and redormatted. This has reccured with all roms since I had to replacwe the radio with the one required for him to be cool with google.
So the quesstion is, what other radios are the newest and will work with gps and cyanogens newest rom?
There are 2 people in this thread with the same prob. A third says google maps didn't work but anothewr gps program did. I have experianced this with2 googlde dev dreams. There is a problem and its not a user problem.
Something like this really sounds like a hardware issue. I don't mess around with the GPS code in my ROMs.

The thing is, the radio that is flashed with the HTC system image, should be the same radio that you were already running on your phone. I don't think that has been changed since 1.5 came out.
And the problem with your theory of this being more than just an isolated incident is this: most people aren't experiencing this problem, only a handful (two or three people here or there does not a system problem make).
I'm 26 years old and have had windows mobile devices and now I've been on android for about half an year. I have used linux back in school when most of the kids here, blindly defending cyanogen were toddlers. I didn't mean to attack cyanogen or whoever else. It's just that the problem is with at least 2 or 3 people and maybe more. The right thing to do is to calm down and try to go back to a state which works. I have reflashed radio and gone to AOSP donut build. Still no luck. When you wipe you wipe /data and /cache right? What about /system ? I bet it's some of the libraries that have something to do with controlling GPS hardware, which remains after a wipe. It would be a nice idea to flash the SPL again. It will probaby clean things up. This is the next thing I'm going to try. It's a good time for someone with better knowledge of how android works step up and give any other ideas.
For now try :
Flash SPL again (whatever SPL you are using)
Flash Radio (latest one from htc developer site)
Flash some basic rom, like TMO cupcake or donut and let's see of it works. That's what I'm trying to do now. If this doesn't help, we might try the proposed reverting to stock spl and RC29.

If you wipe it wipes /data, if you flash a new rom it "wipes" (it really formats) /system and /cache. Nothing is left behind on /system...
Ok. I fixed the issue. I'm on danger SPL , newest radio etc...
I reflashed radio (as adviced above). Prior reflashing the radio wiped and installed enomther AOSP+ADP 1.6, with exp pack 2.11.
After that installed an app from market called GPS TEST (Don't know if it had something to do with GPS being fixed)
It detected 5 satelites right by the window indoors. Then Google maps found my location.

well if you tried another rom and its still there .. then the problem might lie with your phone and not the roms you installing .... is anyone else around you with a G1 not getting gps location also ?
Help please! GPS has stopped working suddenly on my SGS. I had an overclocked (1120 Mhz) SGS running Darky's ROM 9.3. Everything was okay till two days back.
I guess it maybe because of too much apps on my phone or the fact that my kid had dropped it once or twice. There were no problems initially. Then phone had rebooting issues.
I've since formatted it yesterday night and it seems to be okay in terms of rebooting and stuff. I then noticed today that GPS was unable to pinpoint me on GMaps. All I saw in Google Maps was "Your current location is temporarily unavailable"
I thought it maybe bad 3G signal and I tried it outside --> No detection. Back at home I tried with Wi-fi having ticked all 3 options in Settings --> My Location. Still no use.
I then decided to run *#*#1472365#*#* but nothing comes up --> NOTHING! I tried with the tool "SGS Info" (GPS Test/ Settings) and ended up with the same result. Other options in "SGS Info" seem to work fine.
Now I have a feeling my GPS may be malfunctioning or worse broken for good. Can someone clarify this? It would also help if you have suggestions in terms of any other tools, so that I can check the GPS unit of my phone!
Could be hardware more likely the rom or software malfunction .
best would be flash stock rom via Odin and test if its hardware you stand a chance of warranty repair with stock rom .

^ Good advice. Stock ROM is always good to try, first, you may want to try what's working for me at the moment.
Download an app called GPS test. Try it in a few different areas of your house to get the best result, but see how many satellites you can pick up. Generally, I find I get a decent signal if I can lock 5 or more satellites. Gray means they are found, but not locked. They will be coloured when locked on. anything above 20 is generally a strong enough signal to provide a decent GPS signal.
I've found that keeping my GPS close to windows or "in view of the sky" actually helps my signal quite a bit, even if its just to lock the satellite, then I can bring it away from the window.
You may also want to read this thread, should neither of those help you.
The GPS on the Galaxy needs some TLC in order to get working properly, but with a little playing around you can find what works for you.
I went back to XXJPX - that's something that came in Dec 2010. Stock ROM from Europe I guess. But still the same issue. Thanks for the suggestion though!
I have tried putting a bit of pressure on the top portion of the unit. But no GPS detected Looks like I got to try to get it repaired. Now that I am on stock ROM I guess it should be fine in terms of warranty. Thanks for the links and your suggestions.
Well, know what; I tried again in a more open area (importantly in a not so remote area) and it works - at least in GMaps! I am still on XXJPX, so I am unable to say whether something went bad in Darky's ROM, but I am happy nonetheless!

hi all,
I was just wondering if I was the only one with gps troubles.
I tried stock rom, overcome, ics miui, jb aokp, but rarely got satellites detected.
I once got some connexions while using tomtom but about 20 minutes (discontinued) on a 2 hours trip.
with some test apps I got 3 feeble satellites signals.
Does someone else had so much trouble ?
(I trying some gps fixes I found but just wanted to know if I was the only one)
thanks
you are not the only one

No you are not.
Did you GPS work at all?
Mine did and then stopped.. here is what I did before it stopped.
I rooted it with ODIN (ages ago)
for ICS I followed the widely available instructions to get ICS (How to install Stable ICS 4.0.4 on Galaxy TAB P1000 [CyanogenMod 9 Stable]) and everything worked well. Needed a different camera app but the GPS worked reliable and FAST.
When JB was available I used the ROM Based on Jelly Bean 4.1.2 Platform. This is the official CyanogenMod 10 Nightly but had issues with Gapps and did not have time back then (xmas time) so just restored my nandroid backup. And to be honest I have no idea if the GPS worked after that. I think I used the iPhone more for GPS stuff until March.
Fact was it did not get any satelite at all, only location is via WIFI.
My hypo was that I may have missed something or the nandroid backup / restore does not include all files.
To fix it I looked for a later ROM and used JB. I used the Android 4.2.1 CM10.1 for Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 P1000 [Filename: cm-10.1-20121229-EXPERIMENTAL-p1-cdesai.zip] and Google Apps [Filename: gapps-jb-20121130-signed.zip] and that rome is reported that GPS works (but remember it did not work before i used this rom)
All went well and the rom works with all other features but did not GPS and I still have 0 satelites with either GPS Test or GPS Fix.
That is when I found your post.
I had a good dig around XDS and well GPS issues are plentiful, but not quite like the one you or I experience.
It seems that you at least get "some" satelites which is an improvement over none.
re-stocking did not solve it for you so I may save myself the trouble.
that said, my only thought is the GPS module packed in and that is why I get not a single satelite...
did you get anywhere?
TIA

hi there,
for my part, I bought this used tab some month ago. I didn't really liked it in gb, so almost immediatly tried to root it, changed recovery and rom, but never tested gps then.
I actually use miui ics rom and tried gps once. on a 2 hours long trip, sunny weather, nothing to disturb gps signal, I had 20mn of signal and not in a single straight connexion, but only just 1 or 2 mn from time to time.
I tried restock, but not bettre, even my chinese tab is more efficient. I'm still trying to understand and looking for answers but I nedd to restart my searches all over, too much things founds and now I'm quite lost.
The only thing I remember is that someone picked up gps files from his old samsung gsm and copied them on his GT as they had the same system.
I'll try to find that back, and maybe I'll try with my htc as they're all two on miui.
I'll send infos if I find something working
The same problem

Sorry for my english!
My GT-P1000 was to repair because it was unable to read the internal memory! After that I never tested the gps and rooted the tab with CM10.1 TWRP 20130802 Kernel 3.0.88 v1.35 (cm-10.1-20130802-UNOFFICIAL-p1)! I tried gps, but there is no gps signal and there are no satellites found!

Did ypu solved the problem?

no, still not solved it, I suspect some hardware problem like gps chip dead, gps antenna unplugged or broken, but as I had troubles with electronics thèses days, I will wait to open my GT
install apps like Faster GPS, GPS Fix or similar from Play
define your NTP Server and load XTRA data (table of current satellite position)
this will help you!
When I have a 4g connection my GPS doesn't work. The second it goes into 3g the GPS picks up. Pictures attached are GPS status started in 4g and right after it switched to 3g

Wish I had a solution for you, but I've had ridiculously fast lock on times in GPS Status with both 3g and 4g. Only thing I've done is install viperROM and Wolfpack kernel. Can't remember off hand if either of those have had GPS enhancements.
Hope you find a fix.

Installed stock deox rom. Hopefully I will enter lte today to test. Was on sd 1.2
Stock rom worked.. Seems to be a problem with SD 1.2.1 ... Not sure if it effects all roms (don't have LTE at home yet so was testing it while on the road)
Total N00B Question about ViperControl
So I started the emulator and got to the menu...how do I actually access the options? I type the number and push enter but nothing happens. I'm sure it's a dumb dumb question but I'm stuck. Thanks!

Not sure if my situation is related, but on two separate occasions, I also lost GPS all together. I wasn't paying attention to 3G/4G, but like yours, it was also 0/0 satellites; however, if I were to restart the app, the satellites came back. I let my phone try to find signal for five minutes or so the first time this occurred to no avail. Could have been just fluke occurrences, but we'll see if it happens a third time.
Question: Does re-routing take a little longer than usual for anyone else? I noticed that when I made a different turn today, it took a good probably 10 seconds to re-route. Not sure if my phone is just wonky or what, but my GPS has definitely not been up to par.

What ROM are you running (if any)?

Viper, been running it since 1.0.3. At the time, I believe my kernel was stock (now running Wolfpack). Haven't had to use GPS for any decently long lengths recently, so I haven't ran into any issues as of now.

Viper is working fine... It was SD that I had the problem with
I haven't had any GPS issues yet with or without 4G on either stock or Viper 1.0.4 w/ stock kernel. For the record, I have Qualcomm's IZat enabled. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Hello everyone,
I've had my Xperia Z for around a year now and I have used it consistently with cyanogenmod with no issues regarding GPS. The only time my GPS has failed to work properly, I flashed the stock ROM and then the latest cyanogen build to get it working again.
However this time my GPS will not function whatsoever, I have flashed numerous stock and cyanogen builds to no affect. I have also tried every GPS app I can think of to tweak my GPS settings and try to see if any satellites will show up, however none of these approaches have worked. I have come to the conclusion that the GPS hardware must be faulty. Is there anything else I can do, or is it broke for good?]
Many thanks.

Flash the stock rom, go to service menu - service tests - gps. If it doesn't work relock your bootloader. I hope you backed up your TA Partition, because it would make it easier to sent it to repair...
