Wait a few seconds after turning it off.. Because the unit doesn't shut off immediately after the screen and lights turn off, and that can make it iffy getting into download mode..

you have 2 choices
1. for fast solution, return the phone to the store
2. if you can wait, samsung said it'll release a fix later on in september possibly the same time with Froyo2.2

returning it to the store is the best solution.
no one can confirm if samsung will actually release a fix, but it's expected as they are aware of the problem.

It may be something simple but I have not heard of anyone else who could not restart their Galaxy S in the method you are using.

Personally, I've been able to make it into download mode, but not recovery mode. I'm 80% sure I need recovery mode for my root, could I be wrong? And forgive me if these are the same thing, but I don't think they are. I think there is a way to root with the download mode, but the translation for it sucks and I seem to be missing files AFAI can see.
There is a way to get into recovery mode without the 3-button access. I had to go through the same thing with my Bell phone. You need to download the android standard development kit (SDK) and possibly samsung usb drivers. With this from command prompt you can force your phone into recovery/download mode. Here are a few helpful links:
[New member, need to be approved before I can post links. I'll PM them to you if I can and update my post whenever I receive approval.]
I also really recommend you put your SDK right in the C: directory as it simplifies cmd commands. Also make sure to update the SDK when you download it, it's going to want to do it anyways. The above articles aren't very clear if you aren't familiar with cmd commands so I'll quickly explain it. If you put the SDK folder in your C: directory (no subfolders like my documents for example) then you need to get into it by typing " cd \sdk\tools " (at the command prompt screen) before issuing the following commands as described in the video and articles. Hope this helps.
Using the SDK will only really help if your phone's not bricked. If it is, 3 finger recovery is the only real way to help get you back on your feet.
HI all
i tried to return it to the store
but they said it's not a hardware problem
and it is not a necessary for user.
they didn't change it for me.
what can i do
and i found a way to root it..
if i want to fresh the rom without download mode.
what can i do?
I had the same problem entering into Emergency Mode or Recovery mode. I used this trick. Press Home buttton then without releasing Home press and hold at the same time Volume Up button and Power Button and when you see the Galaxy logo for 1 second release the two side buttons Volume and Power but still hold Home for 2 or more seconds till you see Android system recovery mode loading.

Right, I can get to recovery using clockwork after rooting my phone but cannot get into the bootloader by holding down power, home and volume up at boot.
I've tried turning the phone on, immediatly holding down vol up, power and home. It just cycles the Samsun galaxy boot screen to black screen then repeat.
I've also tried taking my fingers off the power (and all other keys on some occasions) when this screen is reached and then putting them back on again - Still no joy.
Anyone got any ideas?
I'd like to try some other roms on my phone but don't want to mess up booting into android and then have no way of getting into recovery/bootloader. Finding it hard to love my galaxy (compared to my desire) due to how I can't do certain things at the moment!
you are not supposed to boot first
to go into download mode, you do it from Power OFF
remove the battery
put battery back
then do the key combos as shown in the wiki
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/Vibrant_GT-I9000M
if it keeps cycling in and endless loop with the Galaxy logo, then the phone is not good
return the phone, and get another one that works
You need to set flags in the boot loader when the phone starts, you do this by holding HOME and either volume up or down. UP is for recovery, and DOWN is for downloader mod. ( Remember [down]loader. )
So whilst holding those two buttons, you then need to turn on the phone. You simply press power until the phone turns on, it is not 'part of the key combination' per say.
If you have no downloader mode, it may be that you received one of the few phones that had the downloader mode disabled for some reason or another, Samsung have said that they will be releasing a patch to fix this. ( I have no idea how you will install it. )

You could use the one click root app thats available.

This is very easy and will reboot your phone into recovery mode.
Is it possible to have a phone that can't enter recovery mode?
My phone is rooted and I can enter recovery mode through Rom Manager but I can't get there by holding volume+- and power. I'm afraid some day I might mess up my phone and be unable to fix it because I can't enter recovery or download mode.
Am I just doing it wrong, or are there phones that cant?
I'm still within 30 days of my phone purchase, should I exchange it?
Same here. I can't get the phone to boot into recovery to update packages to install root. Any suggestions would be appreicated. I just exchanged my phone for a second time for a media player crashing issue, I called AT&T and they told me to bring it in for exchange. I can't get the new one to boot into recovery.
Mine only seems to work if I plug in a usb cable while holding the buttons though I'm sure I just haven't found the right timing the usb cable seems to help for some reason. And no I'm not getting confused with download mode.

I was able to root using the one click root method, the one that's stickied in the development forum. It doesn't require you to manually boot into recovery mode.

I downloaded the oneclick however it is a .rare file and I can not extract the data with my pc for some reason. This is not my first time rooting a Captivate either so I have the tools and drivers. I just can't get into recovery mode and I am frustrated because without root I can not access my backup of Titanium or ClockworkMod.
I also am having problems getting into recovery.. Just got my phone today... I've tried about 30 times, and it absolutely will not go into recovery mode.
Works every time for me if i power off. Hold down volume up and down and power. Wait for the att screen to go off and as soon as it comes back on the second time let go of the power button and continue holding both volume button down until you see recovery booting. It works the same with a usb cable plugged in for download mode.
have you tried to get into recovery via adb , i always found that way a lot easier then pressing those buttons, pressing the buttons always hurt my fingers too much anyways.
From terminal in tool in the android sdk directory, you can do adb reboot recovery

i had the exact same issue of mine not working.. somewhere i had read it was to only hold down the UP arrow, not both up and down. I Just did exactly as you said and it worked perfect.
I am on my 3rd Captivate and it appears that the last two won't go into recovery mode using the button combo at all. My first Captivate did with ease, go figure.

Thanks I did it as you stated and it worked on the first try. Thanks a lot, you just saved me from agonizing over making changes to my phone in fear of not being able to get to the recovery screen.
If people are still having problem is suggest
1 turn off phone
2 count to 30
3 pull battery
4 putt in battery
5 hold both +,- vol buttons and the power
6 let go of power button when you see the att screen
Note: if that doesn't work than in step 5 hold the - vol and the power only or try to hold the + vol and power only.
Hope that helps even though it was said in the thread b4. Im just trying to make it clear
I've tried vol +&- with power.
vol - with power
vol + with power
I've tried letting off power at the at&t screen. I've tried one click root.
Nothing is working.
Edit: Lol, win 7 needs x64 drivers then I got it done through sdk. Still no hardware recovery boot though.
any chance this would work for our phones? Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant (GT-I9000) Software Upgrades for Handsets with Original Production Software
.by Samsung Mobile Canada on Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 4:14pm.A software upgrade is now available for Bell Mobility Galaxy S Vibrant handsets, provided the device has original production software (JG9). The latest version of Kies has been tested and will resolve the three-button recovery issue
I've read on a forum once(can't remember where) that there are different models of the at&t captivate, some ship without the ability to use the buttons to boot into recovery/download. It also said that if you call at&t and tell them you want a phone that boots into recovery they'll send you one.
I told them that this was one of the principal reasons that I won't be keeping my Captivate. I returned mine today (the second one i have had, and after a Nexus One and EVO as well).
Ok i had the same problem i broke the screen on my captivate went to at&t
did a upgrade went to root it and could not get into recovery after reading all the
post and calling samsung (what a wast of time) i took the back cover off my broken phone looking for numbers what i found was a batch # under the sn#
my old phone had 1007# my new phone had a 1008# went back to at&t we looked
at all the captivates until we found a 1007# poped in a battery and went right in
to recovery i'm thinking mabe the new batch# had something different but it worked for me thought i would share

Which update? The JH7 one? I can't boot into recovery either. I'm running JH7 on an AT&T Captivate unlocked and using it on Rogers in Canada, with "1008" on the back of the phone. Maybe they DID remove recovery mode since the "1007" phones?
EDIT: 3-button combo fixed using C3P0LOL's fix.
There have been those that run into problems after installing the XXJP3I9000 update on the Samsung Captivate and attempt to reboot into recovery mode. The issue that they have is that since the Captivate has no physical home button to select an option like you can with the Galaxy S, you can't select an option, and therefore you can't reboot your device regularly. While I am in this same problem and have not figured out a solution, I have started this thread to post what knowledge I have about this issue so that others may help get this issue figured out. If anyone has information on how to fix this problem, please comment below. Let's fix this!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First of all, the key combinations that standardly would work with the original captivate firmware will not work anymore. Pressing all three buttons (Vol+, Vol - and Power) will only power cycle the phone, that is, until you let up on the buttons. Pressing Vol+ and Vol- and then plugging your phone into the computer will also do nothing. (By nothing I mean will take you back to the recovery menu)
Every key combination will only take you back to the recovery menu, so key combinations seem to be out.
If you boot into recovery mode, take out the battery and put it back in, all the while keeping the phone plugged in to the computer, the phone will enter the "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE", which will show your device in windows as being a Samsung USB Composite Device and a Samsung Mobile Modem (gadget serial, Windows 7) While this may be helpful, you cannot run ODIN or ADB in this mode, nor does this allow disk access. If you have Samsung Kies installed, it will detect a device, but will never complete loading it.
Other information with this method: On the phone screen, as well as showing "POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD DEVICE" the screen will also show the following in red:
RST_STAT =0X1
PMIC_IRQ1 =0X0
PMIC_IRQ2 =0x0
PMIC_IRQ3 =0x4
PMIC_STATUS1 =0x40
PMIC_STATUS2 =0x2c
If this helps anybody, it was a pleasure
Another method I found briefly was that after installing Kies, and rebooting the phone into recovery mode (again) my computer detected four new devices, two of them being Samsung Android devices and one being a disk drive. Potentially, without freezing or error, the drivers that are included with the Kies software will detect and allow for disk management while the phone is in recovery mode. Three of the four devices installed without error for me, but the fourth, the actual Android device, continued to say "installing device" until I unplugged the phone out of frustration. It has since not detected those four devices again, and I have yet to figure out how to do that again. The nice thing about that was that although the adb.exe reboot download command did not work, adb.exe did detect the phone. if this is true then rebooting normally or into download mode should be easy.
The last thing I noticed is that button furthest to the left on the main screen on the captivate will close the recovery menu when pressed, and leave the background behind, and then will reopen the recovery menu when pressed again. This is showing me that the four touch buttons are operable, but not configured. If it were possible to reconfigure the actions that pressing these buttons do, then it would be easy to be able to reboot the device normally.
I have compiled information to the best of my ability, and here is a question to ask, that I think will help solve the problem. Can the captivate with I9000 2.2 software run adb in recovery mode?
Comments, Questions, and Most of all, answers would be appreciated for me, as well as for other users with the same problem as I. Hopefully, this thread can be the solving point for this problem.
Many Thanks,
TouchofDestiny
The n00b who isn't a n00b at all
An Update: The reason that the combinations don't work for me or either people is because they (and I) fail to install the captivate kernel, and that is making the volume power button controls useless.
same here i put froyo from the galaxy s i9000 and i cant change the rom or get into recoverymode because buttons dont work man this sucks and 3G or Edge doesnt work.....
You're problem is a little different. If you can't get into recovery mode, than that means you aren't in recovery mode, which means you can use ADB to enter download mode and use Odin to flash your phone. I have given up looking for a solution, and have sent my phone back to AT&T for a replacement. Since I'm still in my thirty day trial period, it doesn't matter if I used different firmware or not. Hopefully others won't get into the situation I had. For me, this thread is complete.
hi,
I solved the same problem doing this:
start odin.
take out battery. plug in USB. press both volume buttons. insert battery while pressing those buttons.
Done. download mode should appear.
yep, same boat
I am in the same position here. I downloaded the froyo leak and installed it with odin, no problem there. Upon startup into froyo, all was good, except my phone was stuck in horizontal mode until I tilted it vertical, *then* it would go horizontal. So basically I am 90 degrees off kilter. I decided to look around for another rom to try, and in the process managed to get stuck in recovery mode. Couldn't tell ya what firmware I have, just what is on the endless recovery screen that I cannot get out of!
I have no external microSD card, only the SIM card, and no way to get it recognized on my XP or win 7 system.
Really, really stuck here, guys. I do have the androidsdk installed, if there is a way to get it to reboot. As it is, adb cannot see the device, so I am looking at a truly bricked phone.
And yes, this is a US phone, which is why the power button and home button are not mapped (I assume).
I am DESPERATE for some help here!
and while I am at it...
I WAS able to get into download mode with the shovel guy originally by using the 2 volume keys+power, usb (odin up), battery in, release power.
No more. No key combo works.
Totally bricked the Samsung, which is supposed to be impossible!
You, sir, are a gentleman, scholar, and all-round smart guy! How did I miss that? I coulda SWORN I was getting into download mode with both volume keys. I've never been so happy to see a little Dalek dude with a shovel in my LIFE. 2 minutes in the one-click installer and now I'm back in business!
Thanks for helping a terrified owner out, and preventing a trip to the AT&T store.
the key to the i9000 rom/kernel button combo is VOL DOWN + using the USB trick. do not press vol up + down, just the down while you are plugging in the usb cable
i too am stuck in recovery mode. the only way i can get into download mode is by using both volume buttons. just holding the down button just sends me to revoery mode as well. how can i fix my phone in download mode?
nevermind, reinstalled 2.2 and it works now.
Eureka I got it...I think
I installed froyo 2.2 i9000 on my captivate and got stuck in recovery mode...power button doesnt select and when I hold down the up and down vol buttons I couldnt get the downloading icon anymore either. Then I remembered something from another post....
Home + Vol Down + Power = Downloading Icon
It worked for me....let me know if this helped....I'm officially unbricked.
Hey. I'm in the same boat. My Captivate has I9000 firmware running it and it won't run properly. I can't access the settings to enable USB debugging in order to boot in either Recovery or Download using adb and no button combination works for me. I can't use button combos to boot into either Recovery or Download mode.
JPBentley-- Since the I9000 firmware is set to use physical buttons, and the Captivate doesn't contain any, once you get into recovery mode, you cannot get out. The standard Captivate key combinations to get into download mode do not work, as do the combinations to get into download mode via the I9000 firmware. Basically, you get to a dead end. Unless there is some way to flash the phone's ROM outside of download mode, which I doubt, your best bet is to return the phone for a replacement. After haggling around with AT&T for a while, they admitted that installing the I9000 ROM doesn't invalidate your warranty, so they should take it back. They did with mine, and now I'm running the official Froyo leak. Good luck with your new phone!
SOLUTION
For all those that are having this problem, Ive struggled with it & tried EVERY possible button combination & nothing worked.
The ONLY solutions I have found is to use a usb JIG. Take out the battery, sim card & sd card, plug in the Usb JIG & put the batter back in. Give it a couple of seconds & I'tll enter recovery mode without pushing any buttons. You dont even need to push the power button, it's that simple.
Here is an image of how to make one if you are electronically inclined, personally I am not so I found a local electronic parts store & they put on together for me.
1.bp.blogspot.com/_3KjgtwnRiWM/TNTyjkZGquI/AAAAAAAABL4/7NSmqrYmkmU/s640/i900.jpg
If you want, you can also buy one online, I cant post a link becuase Im a new member but just search for "samsung usb jig" on ebay.com & youll find plenty.
shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=samsung+usb+jig&_sacat=See-All-Categories
yes, i think you need to build a jig or buy one online if you want to play with custom rom. you may not need it now, but you may need it just in case.
That's not even close to a brick. Are you using a usb port closest to the motherboard on your pc? Is your cable good? Make or buy a jig, that will put your phone into download mode.
I decided to try the the rom provided by Null, but I can not get into recovery mode for my life.Held power button, but pressing it again 5 after power off screen, does nothing.
It will either open svoice or back to clock.....
Just a note, I tried rooting yesterday and did all the steps but explorer never gives me the option to have access to everything, so probably, not rooted yet. Don't know why.
I just got the gear yesterday and been playing with it.
Used an older version of manager and got it to connect to my S4 for now with limited functionality....
So I don't know if I am missing anything, if it's region specific or what, any help would be appreciated..
Any other way to get o recovery mode for now ?
UPDATE : DONE! not as simple as guide, thanks to someone that posted detailed instructions I did it. Thanks
sorry, was answered in the other thread, never thought to paste it here...There you go : (from another guy that posted the help)
"Step 1ress and hold power button for 2 secs
Step 2:Tap restart
Step 3:Tap ok
Step 4:Immediately hold the power (you will see the Samsung emblem with a blue halo)
Step 5:Release the power button when you see the Samsung Galaxy Gear with "rebooting" underneath
Step 6:Immediately rapidly press the power button 5-12 times until the next screen appears "Select boot mode"
Step 7ress power button once to change to Download.
Step 8ress and hold the power button on desired selection to choose and enter the selected mode
"
All these steps are way too complicated but it's awesome you guys have figured it out though but I find it easier to just add reboot download
Whats so hard about these steps. I had my gear less than 20 minutes and was already doing those steps.
Sorry my gear get stuck on "Downloading do not turn off target" the target it's looking for is not available it was replaced by my new S6edge+... Any solution?
I have a G973F that I managed to root and get TWRP installed. I attempted to install the BeyondROM but wouldn't make it past the logo screen so I attempted to flash the original firmware for my device using Odin. There were no errors when I flashed the firmware but the system still didn't boot. I tried to do a factory reset from the recovery menu and it seemed like it completed but now my device will only turn on with "Only official released binaries are allowed to be flashed" at the top. It does not attempt to boot the OS and turns off a few seconds after I release the power button. I have held the Bixby+Vol Up buttons to attempt to get into recovery, doesn't work. I have held Bixby+Vol Down buttons and plugged my phone into my computer to try and boot download mode, doesn't work.
I can't do anything at this point. Does anyone have a way I can use to recover from this?
Hi I got plenty of times this msg "Only official released binaries are allowed to be flashed". You don't have to worry about it. Just try to flash Official Stock and it will be fine.
Unfortunately I cannot get to download mode to do that. My phone turns on flashes the notice and then turns off. If I hold the power button it will stay on but Download Mode and Recovery cannot be booted to.
Thats the tricky part but I know its hard. Try to press together Bixby + Power button. As soon as it goes off then suddenly press Bixby + Volume Down button and attach data cable. I got the same issue because you have only few seconds to do it. If you cant do it then try to get some help of your friend or relatives etc. I am damn sure you can do this. You take reponsibility of buttons and tell your friend to attach the cable once it goes off. And sorry for my bad english
Your English is great and it worked as you said. I totally thought I was out the cost of this damn phone. Was that documented somewhere or did you randomly figure that out?
Its even easier - you can keep the cable attached. Had some story ...)
