[Q] adding a smb share in galleries - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
a question: is it possible to manual add a smb share in the gallery?
If i use a program like ES file explorer i can see and acces my smb shares, but if i open gallery i don't see the smb share (nor can i add a smb share). It would be nice if this could be done somehow because another programm photoframe looks to the gallery to see what pictures are stored in the gallery. It would be great to use to phone as a digital slideshow when it's charging
My phone is rooted (i don't know if this can help to find a anser to my question). If anyone has an idea than that would be great.

I will take a guess:
1) The gallery application is updated with content every time you restart your phone or re-insert your SD card. Only at this point does it populate the gallery with content.
2) The smb share you see with the explorer app is not mounted onto your phone at all so even if you triggered a rescan of the sd card it would still miss the smb share unless the application provided some kind of a driver for the smb share.
3) A thought would be to try and make a directory on your SD card, mount the smb share to it and find a way to trigger the sd card scan ad hope that it picks it up.

adding new music

When I add new music to my sdcard via PC or downloading through the browser it doesn't show up in the stock music app.
I can open the file directly through a file explorer or browser download screen and it will play but it will have no options eg: no repeat or add to playlist
Has anyone come across this? Once I restart the phone it will show up correctly.
I noticed there is a media scanner in spare parts or dev tools but it doesn't help.
mine shows up pretty quick, where do you put the music onthe sd card and how do you dismount the sd card?
Had that problem too, a long time ago. Probably even before I got my Nexus and used a Galaxy Spica. What I did was download songs to my SD card over the network using ES File Explorer. I think Android doesn't really monitor the SD card, all it does is scan when the SD card is mounted. This way, if you use USB to transfer media from your PC, and then disconnect it, it gets mounted again, and the media scanner will run and find the new files. Any other way is probably broken... maybe you can trigger a scan by unmounting and remounting the SD card (from the settings menu)...
I remember there being an application on the market, sdcard rescan or something that did that.
yup, thats normal, if you copy music to the sd through an application. android does not monitor the filesystem for new music files and only scans on mount (which happens on bootup).
but yeah ther was an app for that. does anybody have the name?

perfect.
thanks for the mount tips too. makes sense.
or if your rom comes with "Dev Tools" just open media scanner.
Good one, forgot about that.

[Q] Shortcuts possible to sdcard2?

Hi, I'm running Vegan 5.1 on Gtab. I know I can put shortcuts on the desktop but that isn't what Im trying to do. For instance I want to use a audio or video player that searches by default for files in folders on sdcard such as audio or video. When the program searches /sdcard/video I would like to redirect it to /sdcard2/video. Wouldn't a shortcut in one directory redirect to another location and be "visible" to the host program? I'm trying to get audio and video players to find sdcard2. If a shortcut existed to the directory or file itself wouldn't that work? Looking around I don't see much about this, and it may not be possible with android. The only information I see is about shortcuts on the desktop. Any ideas? Thanks.
Try this- ../sdcard2/(target directory)

Thanks, but I don't understand how to apply this. Lets say I have a video file at /sdcard2/video/movie.mp4. If I could make a shortcut to the movie.mp4 file and place it in /sdcard/video, then movie player program would be able to see it. Since I can't change the path for the movie player to search, I'm going to have to bring the files to where they can be found. I want to use sdcard2 for multimedia storage and put shortcuts to video and music on internal sdcard. I can mke shortcuts to the desktop all day long, but I can't find how to move them into a different folder. Also I don't know where the desktop folder, if indeed there is such a folder is located. If I could find the desktop folder I could copy or move the shortcut from there. Like I say, this may not even be possible.
you can always use astro file manager to open the video/audio file. i have the same problem opening videos that only vital player recognizes, but it only gives the option to sdcard not sdcard2 or usb. so i search for the file in astro and open with vital.
I know this is an old thread, but here's what I have been doing in VEGAn 5.11.
Make a directory called sdcard2 in /mnt/sdcard -- you can do this with a file manager or in the shell. You only have to do this once
Open a shell.
Enter:
su
First time you do this you'll have to acknowledge root. If you tell it to remember, you won't have to do it again.
Type
mount -o bind /mnt/sdcard2 /mnt/sdcard/sdcard2
That's it. Now you will have an sdcard2 folder nested in the sdcard folder. The only problem is it won't survive a reboot. I was looking for /etc/fstab to do this permanently but there is only a vold.fstab file so not sure if that will work or not. Need to try it and see I suppose.
Re Calkiuns ROM I believe it's native...

I actually have a few movies saved in SD card 2 I long press chose shortcuts, astro, scroll to SD card2 and choose the movie witch puts it on my homescreen I then put them all in a movie folder on the homescreen... hope that helps.. I'm running tnt lite 4.3
nice tip about the shortcuts. however, it doesn't work if you have an application that only works with the sd card
besides, I can imagine wanting to start other things like sshd
One other thing I've noticed. If you do the bind mount (https://market.android.com/details?id=os.tools.scriptmanager looks like it would be good for doing this on boot, btw) then putting the tablet in USB file transfer mode just spins forever. Well maybe it just takes a long time searching sdcard2 but I finally cancelled it. The solution is:
umount /mnt/sdcard/sdcard2
Then do the USB operation.

cannot see /mnt/external1/DCIM/Camera folder on PC

Has anyone observed a similar issue on their Motorola Razr-i (or maybe it is an ICF issue/feature)? When I connect my RAZR-i to my Windows 7 laptop, I see all folders and files in my external card but the pictures taken with the RAZR camera. When I push into the DCIM folder I cannot see the Camera folder (my camera setting is to save all pictures on the external card). USB debugging is turned on and I get the same results whetherI I conenxt as Media device (MTP) or Camera (PTP). However, when I check the content using the File Manager app on my RAZR-i, I do see the Camera folder and its content. So it is there, just I cannot see it from my laptop. Finally, when I copy it's content (via the RAZR file manager app) to another folder on teh SD card, I do see that content on my laptop...somehow the DCIM/Camera folder is being blocked from viewing on my laptop.
Another topic: my camera makes ok pictures, but I noticed: a) corseness in parts of the pictures when there is a lot of sky and b) pictures tend to be a bit yellowish. Any app I can use to correct for that? I do not see any settings/options to correct using the build-in camera app....
Thanks for any hints - I am an overall happy RAZR-i customer.

FYI: My recent update to system version "81.5.39001.xt890.Retail.en.GB" fixed both issues (and the sluggish performance when one pressing teh home button on the home screen)....

Mapping CIFs network drives for use in VR Gallery.

Hi everyone, I've been trying to fiddle with my CIFs network hard drive shares to see if there was any way to virtually mount them so that the Gallery sees them as though they were on my SDCard locally. I know that with kitkat it is required that you use a kernel that supports CIFs and as of Dec 6th, AEL (I use the TMo variant of the Note 4) supposedly supports CIF's network shares.
I have been able to successfully mount them using CIFS manager in the play store but when going to browse within any file explorer the folders show up but they are empty. Does anyone have any other ideas? I would love to be able to use the VR Gallery to browse 3D files stored on my PC as I have a rather extensive selection and having to copy back and forth on to the micro SD is a slow and tedious process. Hopefully this feature is added in the future but for the time being I'd love to get some ideas on whether or not we could possible get files to stream over wifi from a file server.

[Q] External share?

Hi.
I got the Lollipop update for my Z3 Compact (T-mobile), and now I see i can add an external share to my phone. Does this mean I can add my Nas (a special share for my phone) to offload images and videos to? If so, how do I add the share? Can't find any info on this subject. Anyone added an external share? Thanks in advance.
Neo
Yes, it can connect to SMB (Windows) shares. The KitKat builds had this capability as well. On my Lollipop phone my home computer share is still visible in the storage control from when I connected to it with KitKat.
Personally, I prefer to use the tabs in Root Explorer to browse my PC file system.
So if I understand correctly, I can connect to my nas to offload pictures and videos? I really wanna avoid opening the lid each time my phone is full of videos. Dropbox isn't a really viable option either. So now I only have to figure out how to connect the two... Any tutorials?
