hi, im a new galaxy S owner living over in Seoul, South Korea (originally from Canada), and im having a hard time rooting my phone. im not sure if its because the Galaxy S released here in Korea is a bit different or what, but i need some help.
ive followed the tutorial non this site, downloaded update.zip and transferred it to the /sdcard folder on my phone. then the first problem i had was getting into android system recovery. all the sites/forums i read (including this one) said to hold volume UP + home button and the power on. this doesnt work on the korean galaxy S. after asking some Korean friends (who also own galS's) how to do it, i learned you need to hold volume DOWN + home, then hit power on. sigh.
anyway, my current problem is that once i get into system recovery, i only have 3 options:
-reboot system now
-wipe device (factory reset), except sdcard
-wipe cache partition
i dont see the option mentioned in the tutorial that says 'apply sdcard:update.zip'
and yes im sure ive got the update.zip file in the right folder and that its not corrupt (ive deleted it and downloaded it again a couple times to be sure).
so can anyone tell me how to get the 'apply sdcard:update.zip' option to show up in system recovery? is there something else i should be doing since this is a Korean galS? so far ive found many of the tutorials for N. American and UK galS users on here and XDA forums havent been quite accurate when applied to the Korean version (for example, the method to launch system recovery being different, etc)...
any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
That's weird. Maybe Korean phone is different from the rest of the world.

First off I would like to say that this is one of the best forums I have ever seen as the amount of support and helpful users and creativity put into these phones are staggering. I was going to go to Windows mobile for my next phone but I now doub it with this site or at least maybe I will dual boot.
So I am sure I am asking questions that have already been answered but my problems with the phone (USA G1) are many and the answers to some of the problems are so fragmented that I had at one point 14 tabs open for reference to solve just a few issues. I am 70% noob with the G1. I have had the phone for a year with no major issues just the annoying Force Close that seemed unecessary for the commonality of the app that had problems. Texts were annoying because I could not tell if they had been sent the previous day or recently as service at my home is come and go and my older Verizon phone had envelope information and even said if the person had read it or not so no annoying duplication. However, otherwise it was stable and would last about a day and a half with the double size battery.
Recently, however I had rebooted from the power button prompt and it got stuck (I can't remember on what screen) and figured installing a different ROM and other files would fix the problem. By the way, I had bought the phone rooted and I believe it was using JF 1.42 and a Cyagen mod (forgive my spelling). So I followed step by step from this forum the wiki on the lastest stable Cy ROM. I followed the instructions to the T.
Being new to the software, it was a slow process with a lot of repeating of steps discovering little details that were not mentioned like naming something update instead of update.zip like instructed or adding the .img as an extension. So I had nearly made it and then I came to the DangerSPL and other files to be loaded on the phone in order via fastboot. Despite, several attempts I could not get the skateboarding droids or the rainbow screen to come up so I finally decided to just continue as I had been using Amon-RAs 1.7 update zip feature to follow the instrucions and install the software in order. All was well until I got to flashing the actual ROM which said something about how it said the E: [insert file name here] was not correct so it aborted everytime but it did show some progress on the yellow bar.
Next came the issue of the G1 screen hanging up after the above problem and for some reason I could get to the 1.7 screen but only by holding the button required to access Amon RA longer than usual other wise it would say the build of Amon RA at th ebottom with no commands and the reboot itself or hold it longer and finally get to the Amon RA but it would not load my recovery files as I had made many along the way.
I nearly gave up but then came across this solution which worked by using method 1 at well I am not allowed to pu the websit in here but I am not allowed by the mods. but it is the 4th one down if you google "how to fix a soft brick g1" and the link is titled Unbrick - android-roms - How To: Recover your G1 from a bring ...However, it did get stuck at the rainbow screen as it finally let me do the fastboot and I saw the Androids skateboardig but it hung at the rainbow screen. It was here I noticed that my 32A phone was now a 32B. I took the battery out and powered it up and lo and behold it was asking me to put in my google information and I finally made it to the home screen.
I thought "Yes!". Now, I can try again since it will fastboot now which was what was recommended at the final steps but I was mistaken. I could not searc the market for common apps like wave secure and it frequently said it does not exist. I saw that my terminal app was gone and when I was finally able to download it from the market and my superuser app was gone and the termina would not respond as before to the input of SU.
Then, I noticed my phone's screen would randomly come on and only sometimes go off. When I pressed menu it was as if it the call button was stuck and it would either repeatedly bring up voice dial or call someone. The buton does not appear to be stuck otherwise. When it would briefly stop, acting like the call button was in turbo mode it would give me the option to mount the SD card as I had lost my micro sd card reader but never give me a chance to mount it before the call button interrupted with google dial or calling some number.
I do not believe this to be a hardware issue because as far as I remember the call button worked normally during the steps as it was requently used. So my questions, at the moment, are these:
1. How do I tell if the call button problem is a hardware or software issue?
2. Once I find my card reader and will I be able to use the factory bootloader to go through the updates.
3. Obviously I have derooted my phone (or maybe I can delete the diag from sd card and it will operate as it is derooted), will I be able to reroot my phone by using my backups of nandroid basically leaving me at whatever step I was on to the road of recovery?
4. How do I use my nandroid backup to recover especially if I am stuck with the factory bootloader?
5. I copied my SD card before I did the wipe originally so will I be able to find a .xml from handcent with my texts? (I text myself my mileage for work as with my hours, it is easier than using an app plus it saves space for other apps)? Should I load that backup nandroid first and start over?
6. Is there a quicker way to root like...a program?
7. What is your advice for the future other tha obviously backing up my texts more?
8. When did wave secure start costing money? I think I might have backed up everything a few days before the crash but I have no access to it now.
9. What other key combinations can I later use for the fast boot?
10. When formating the card to fat32 what allocation do you use and do you use quick format?
11. What is lost dir. and why is it empty?
12. In Amon RA 1.7 there are several caches which I cleard all of them when asked to clear the the cache in the wiki directions? Should I clear all of them and what are the seperate caches, espicially the davik one?
I am sure I am missing some question but I will post more as I try to follow your directions or attempt other methods. I apologize for the long, long story but I wanted make sure I did not leave out any detail so this can be resolved ASAP because I am sure I am receiving texts and calls and people are probably thinking I am ignoring them (no one leaves voicemails anymore so how can I know if they called or texted during the phone's sickness). I also apologize if I have broken any forum rules or posted in the wrong section or violated some. Thanks guys in advance. I miss the fat little thing so much.
Oh My god! Sorry but that's too long for me to read, my attention span isn't all that great =p
I will try to help with your questions but I didn't read the whole intro so my answers might be a little redundant.
1.Run "adb logcat" from a cmd prompt on your computer and see if pushing the button registers on the computer
2. um ok??? not a question
3. you will have to re-root but your backups will still be usable after you gain back root
4. boot to recovery (home+power), scroll down to backup and restore, select restore, and select the file
5. I'm not familiar with handcaent so can't offer help there.
6. It's not hard. Downgrade with DREAIMG.nbh to RC29, use update.zip to upgrade to 1.5, install one click root, use it, flash a recovery, and flash a rom.
7. You should write shorter paragraphs =p
8. Again, not familiar with it.
9. HOME + POWER, and BACK + POWER
10. No clue....
11. It's a folder automatically created when you don't unmount your phone before disconectiong the usb. It's useless and you can delete it.
12. When installing a new rom, just wipe everything. It saves you trouble later on.
Hope I helped...
Thanks I will give it a try later today and probably come back with more questions and longer paragraphs
Hello guys.
FYI this is about Samsung Galaxy S Wiki 5.0 - YP-G70CW and I posted here as there is no forum for this device, and the i9000 is the closest (i think).
So, I had bought a couple of months ago this device in China but it came with no Market, no Google apps, and does not allow any Google apps. So it is very limited. Check here, we couldn't find help that time.
Now, I got a Brazilian version of this device from a friend. They are the same, but the Brazilian system got all that the Chinese one misses.
I installed ClockworkMod Rom Manager but looks like it have no support for Samsung Galaxy S Wifi. I have choose the i9000 model anyway, but it does not create the backup files.
So now I have an appropriate device to copy from, but I need help to make that backup / ROM file(s).
thanks in advance.
Any tip would be appreciated.
I don't think that there's the same processor as in our i9000 -> so ROMs won't fit.
Ok, I understand.
But do you know how to make a ROM from a device (without ClockworkMod ROM Manager)?
I borrowed the same device (but from a different country) and I would like to know how to copy the OS from the borrowed one to mine.
Is there any way I can copy the system, without making a ROM?
thanks in advance.
I am pretty sure you could potentially use ODIN to dump the files you would need but the liklihood of turning both devices into plastic bricks is pretty high. That being said I have a Chinese ROM of the YP-G70 that has the Android Market and Google Apps. I have a Canadian device I got from Woot and accidentally futzed it up. Only ROM I could find was the Chinese one and I had to flash from ODIN. If you want it PM me.
Roms are far more complicated than just the interface you see... they control everything, including how the screen turns on, how the buttons work and so on. If you have an incompatible rom you probably won't even be able to boot up the phone.
Anyway, if you really want to copy a rom you could try doing a CWM backup/restore from another phone, though I would definitely not recommend it.
If it's the same device (same CPU, same model, you know ) I don't see any problems with restoring the CWM-backup...
Ok guys!
evilh has sent me a link with the Chinese ROMs. One is identical to mine, the other have all the Google stuff (probably from Hong Kong).
The summary to flash YP-G70 is the following.
0. Download SuperOneClick, Odin3, the adequate ROM and Drivers for Samsung Mobile Phones (and install it).
1. Root the device with SuperOneClick (to say the truth I don't know it it is really required).
2. Connect the device to the computer with USB cable.
3. Turn the device off, and turn it on in Download Mode (hold volume down and power until the mode starts).
4. Open Odin3 (it shows your device is connected).
5. Click "PDA" and select the ROM file.
6. Click "Start"
Done. Wait some minutes to flash the files, the device will restart a couple of times, but when it's done the OS will start automatically. Voila.
Thanks to evilh. It worked like a charm for me!
*I take no responsibility for brickings or any damage to your device, do it for your own risk.

Glad I could help. Nice to be able to give back to the community every now and again.
We should start a list of apps that break this device. For me it was "Font Installer Root" by JRummy16. For user chinchachoma it was one of the apps that changes pixel density.
So I dropped my Captivate and shattered the screen a couple days ago. There is no picture on the screen at all but the phone does power on because I can here ringtones, etc. I already got my replacement phone from AT&T's insurance company (Asurion) today and I have to send this old one back. But... I want to wipe all the data off of it before sending it back, there are pics, vids, passwords, etc that I don't want the techs who refurbish this to be able to see. But since I can't see anything on the screen, that's hard to do. I do have the latest Clockwork Mod recovery. I know how to do the 3 button into recovery method, but I need to know which option to choose to wipe and how many times I have to press down to confirm the wipe, etc. I called Samsung about this and asked them, but completely forgot I'm not using their recovery, and didn't want to tell them I have a different recovery. So that was a short convo. lol Also... I do have a download jig (tested previously and successfully) so I tried doing an odin flash in download mode, but none of the Odin versions I have would show it connecting to my phone. So, what I'm asking for is help in factory resetting from Clockwork recovery "blind". Thanks!
A lot is gonna depend on what kernel/recovery you have, they all have different placement of the different options. if we knew that we might be able to mount USB storage so you can recover what you need to.
Btw just noticed your duplicate post in the general section, tis not cool to double post.
I had just put the ICSSGS RC4 rom on it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1362092
I have the kernel that came with that. I'm not sure which version of ClockworkMod Recovery it has. And I wasn't sure where to post this (as I'm new to this forum), hence the double post. Apologies to the mods and members.
Edit: I had a Heimdall usb driver installed on my computer, that's why none of my Odin versions would work. I uninstalled that driver and installed the stock usb driver. Got Odin v1 to load and flashed it back to stock. I was able to copy everything off the internal sd (quite excited about that) when the phone restarted. Then did a master clear with Odin.
Thanks to everyone who viewed this post, and hopefully it will help someone else that comes across this unique problem in the future.
Im EXTREMELY technologically challenged.
I used to use a Nokia e75 before getting the Galaxy Note (around 6 months ago)
I got it from the 'grey market' in the U.A.E (and it had rupees label on it).
I have a few problems that i need help with please.
1. Since i bought it from the 'grey market' (not an authorized dealer) it doesn't upgrade. Im still on Android 2.3.5. When i do a check for 'updates'… no update available is the message i get. Is that right? Can i do something about it?
2. Nokia used to have a 'suite' software that would automatically backup EVERYTHING on the phone, into a 'file' or folder. I have a macbook pro, is there something like that … that i could back up all the contents on my phone? (i tried Kies but it's limited and complicated for my pea brain!)
3. Just today, my speaker stopped working for audio files and messages. My ringer is audible but nothing compared to what it used to be. What do i do? There's no sound with games, messages and so on. The phone vibrates (and all sounds are audible via headphones).
4. Sometimes the keyboard crashes and then i have to restart the application that i was working with (namely whatsapp and messaging). Is there anything i can do to fix that?
That's all for now. I would REALLY appreciate any/all help that i can get, and PLEASE be as detailed as you can … as you would with an eight year old!
Thanks a bunch.
Sam.
p.s : if you're wondering what i am doing with these gadgets when i am so illiterate … perhaps a mid life crisis?
Lol dont worry your as old as you feel. Gray market whats that? Senior mart, or s-mart? Sorry couldnt help it.
Check your csc by getting imei, dial in dialer *#06#
Write that down and keep private.
Then dial *#272*imei#* you put the number you just wrote where it says imei.
Then check which csc is selected. This determines if you are upgradeable. The country that corresponds with this is, or should be what most people are talking about when an update is available
Now if its not available, check i.e sammobile.com firmware section.
Next to thisvif you really really want update just go to developers section here in forum and follow dr ketans thread. His tutorial is awesome!
Anyways dont ever wipe or factory reset on any ICS when you get there!

1. You can flash any rom via Odin, even newest 4.0.3 ICS - but you have to do it manually via PC. OTA update depends on region, your Note might come from one that has not received the update yet. If you need help with that send me a PM.
2. There is only Kies dedicated to Samsung devices. There are some 3rd party apps dedicated for Android in general, but they don't work very well. So i'd say - unfortunately - no.
3. That's common software bug. Enter recovery ( Volume up + home + power ) and select "Clear Cache". This has helped me fix that at least twice.
4. You can try installing ICS keyboard from the market, or any replacement keyboards like Swift etc. they usually work better than stock Samsung GB one.
Guys, i tried 'thanking your post' but it didn't work for some reason.
Baz77 - That was quite funny actually!
I tried doing that and before i could put in the final '*' a screen came up with a 'sales code'… which said 'INU'. Also it had what appeared to be initials of different countries below that i could select (UAE wasn't one of them!). It also had an 'install' and 'cancel' icons at the bottom. When i hit 'install' … nothing happened :s (help?)
Also you said if you really really want to… (i shouldn't upgrade? any problems with that? should i back up data or something before doing it? am i being paranoid with your usage of TWO really's?

1. Your first post was with so many abbreviations.. it sounded like 'chinese' to someone like me. I have no idea what those things mean. Could you please explain? Also, you mentioned PC… not with Mac?
2. okay .. kies it is.
3. I tried doing that .. and it took a 'screen capture of my phone' :s
4. Thanks.
Thanks Guys! Appreciate your help!

Anyway dont change csc, installing another one will initiate a full wipe.
Also you said if you really really want to… (i shouldn't upgrade? any problems with that? should i back up data or something before doing it? am i being paranoid with your usage of TWO really's? Id recommend not to, due to battery issues and braking risk on ICS. But you can if you want to. Best case is to choose a csc rom that corresponds with the current csc. That way OTA and kies will be possible. Did you try Kies? You can get it from samsung.com it sucks but could help, cause not everyone gets ota, for weird reason.

So ive just recieved an s3 8190 mini not an n or l model labled as sapres repairs, i have some experiecne flashing phones including a s3 mini-n so thought i'd grab this one to fix it and sell on...boy was i wrong
many hours later of various flash attmepts and reading troublshooting methods on the problems this phone does little else but restart a lot!
it wont accept anything ive flashed, i cant boot into recovery or root it sucessfully, however it will boot into download mode (a ray of hope perhaps?) after flashing various recoveries and trying to boot into it the bottom leds flash and it restarts again and it just wants to boot up normally no matter what, ive tried the 3 buttons then releasing only the power after i see the logo as ireads that worked for a few
the phone requires a pin to be entered at start which was in the box on a piece of paper, once in the time i get varies before it resets again and any settings i changed are restored things like wifi mode etc are all back...wtf is this? also apps cant be uninstalled!! and more importanly i cant factory reset, i press the first few buttons and then the final one does nothing....there is a missed call dated last year some time that shows up in the notifications area...
im currently flashing official firmware via link on this site that matches the baseband so hoping that might do something, but that seems like bind mans hope in hell, ive tried a few things from this site like a flash that makes the 3 buttons "work" which it did for some, thought not done anyhting with adb/fastboot being new to it, the phone wasnt recognised the few times i tried it.
where now then just what is wrong wiht this phone and can i get it up & running?
