Samsung firmware closing...? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

http://twitter.com/SamsungFirmware/status/21937810800

surprised they got away with it this long, pretty blatant use of the samsung brand name. They just need to be more subtle about it.....lol.

The leave the wiki up and add the new files there.

um, their twitter page is gone.... I swear to God if this is samsung's doing, I will never buy their crap again. I guess I better start downloading all the files I want form their site before it goes down.
EDIT: crap, its down.... but before the twitter page went down, the guy said he was moving sites... so hopefully it will go up again. FU samsung.

What do you expect? They were using Samsung's name and on top of that calling their site "Samsung Firmwares" would fool the average user into thinking it was a legit Samsung site.
Plenty of other names they could have used.

Here we go
http://www.samfirmware.webs.com/
Please vote!

yeah, all they need is just a change in their domain name
then everything is good business like before

They have to change all links inside their site, anyway everything is online again

Screaming, the sounds of screaming!

Hehehehe, I just had to post this...
My phone carrier is iWireless, in Iowa, USA. We are offered the Pantech Duo (not sure what number) for like $40US with a two year contract. I have a Kaiser, and my wife has a converted Tilt... we're not interested in a 'new' phone, but it is time to re-sign my contract, and I figured I'd look at what back-up/spare phones I could get cheap.
I wanted to do some research about the Pantech Duo, and see what was known about it. I first searched here, only to find it is shunned (I don't blame you), and that there USED to be a few forums for it, but they seem to have aged out...
So, I went to the Pantech site. What I read there I couldn't just ignore...
Here is the whole page, but you can't read it well...
So, here is the close-up...
Worth a laugh...
I lol'd....
Hahaha love it, had to check the pantech site to confirm, http://www.pantechusa.com/phones theres the link if anyone else wants to check it.
Great find though haha
Sam
It has been changed now, but I still go back to this post to get a good laugh when I need it.
That's too funny LOL
epic win FTW!
Haha nice. I don't even know what they possibly could've meant.
Ha ha ha..
LoL
Nice work dude
Thanks!
err, Um, Hey, Thanks!
(apparently our posts have to have more than 10 letters... odd)
Heheheh. Just saw it on a second visit to this thread. Looks like some web designer lost his job (or forgot to remove filler text!)
LMFAO. I bet he still has his job.
It is odd, my dad insists that it was done deliberatly to make us all take notice of them, and therefore be more prone to buy from them... He just doesn't get that in this case, the phone quality doesn't support the 'bad publicity is STILL publicity' theory...
I'm sure it was a case of someone taking the un-finished slides and either running late on his due date to turn it in, or the text was corrected and not saved to the right file before submission.
There was another example of this not too long ago. I can't find the link at the moment but the guys entire conversation was saved into the advertisement about lingerie he was buying for his gf.

SamsungJohn : A Question For You

I find this very curious, since January, I have been very vocal on the Samsung USA Facebook page as well as Twitter about the missing Froyo update. Today I went to check the Facebook page to find that somehow I had lost the ability to post anything.. shortly thereafter, I realized that I no longer "liked" the Samsung USA page. I did not do that myself, Samsung must have had that done (reported me for spamming/abuse?). Perusing the wall posts, I notice a distinct lack of people complaining about the 2.2 update.
I was not abusive, I did not swear or use foul language in any of my posts on that wall. I cracked a few jokes, sure, but nothing that could have been considered over-the-top. In fact, I waited until AFTER the promised "by the end of the year" deadline (promised to me on Twitter by @GalaxySSupport) to even being posting any complaints.
Is this Samsung's damage-control strategy moving forward? To try to stifle public outcry by booting us off of your pages and deleting our posts?

You know this is very interesting as when trying to give the Vibrant a bad review (for the software not the hardware) on their website it will tell you that they are looking for different type of reviews and won't post the bad one.

thats insane. i'm really starting to dislike the samsung brand. buying a new tv soon too to replace my 5 year old samsung
Unless samsung comes out with something AMAZING (honeycomb for my Epic) to make up for all their lack with the galaxy S line, I will never buy another samsung product again.
SO MANY of my tech friends said "samsung does not support their phones, YOU WILL BE UPSET"
As I sit here the audio out ports on both my car and desk docks DO NOT WORK because they haven't released a year old 2.2 froyo.
Looks like my tech friends were right. The only reason my gps works is because of the hard working dev's here......and I have paid them for their work! I feel horrible for all the stock users in the world who have a **** gps thanks to samsung.

Same happened to me with the Captivate on AT&T's website. Except mine was all hardware complaints.
My hardware is perfect
But sadly software is not! Unless they move away from carrier based updates this will be my last Samsung or Android based phone.
Remember Samsung when my phone crashes due to poor or out of date software or can't download something for the same reason I don't see the 3 mobile logo all I see is the Samsung logo.
This is all happening too close to the release of the Galaxy S 2 launch!

Man, same thing happened to me w/ my Epic review. I was pretty honest that i loved the hardware but the software needed updating. Got a message saying my review did not match what they were looking for and was rejected. Pretty easy to have devices w/ 4 and 5 star aggregate scores on your website if you're controlling which reviews you accept samsung.
You guys should take some screenshots of this and send it around to sites like engadget. The more bad press we can get for samsung, the faster we see updates. Worked for the t-mobile guys after they very publicly accused samsung of holding back the update to sell their newer phone.
Hi Guys,
I am also a samsung owner, not the galaxy S series but a phone called the Samsung Spica i5700; not supported by Samsung anymore after they claimed the hardware was not capable to run Android 2.2 froyo, ehh! the devs over at samdroid have ported AOSP and CM builds of 2.2 froyo onto it and are as of now porting AOSP and CM of GB.
the point I have is samsung is pathetic in customer support, all they want is to sell the customers to buy there new devices, and when the samsung #nevergain hashtag was started by an xda member and the hashtag went BOOM into samsung's face they are here to regain some respect, for that they need to prove a point to us, we have already proven them wrong.
I think the way to froyo, is to keep the heat up till they break down and beg to give source away.
everyone should retweet this:

What can I say that has not been said more eloquently by others.
GPS + Froyo for Captivate Update please. As that would make the phone much more desirable and usable, The immediate next thing I am going to do is Ebay that Piece Of S***. Seriously Never going to touch a samsung phone even with a barge pole.
Thank you Samsung for making the Galaxy S brand a pinnacle for quality, support and customer satisfaction.
P.S. I know this has been posted before and does not add ANYTHING, but had to vent.
What the hell is samsungjohn discussing with the xda people? I mean it's been fully 5 days now and absolutely nothing of substance has emerged. What is taking so long? I mean seriously, can someone give an update or something?
Im not really sure theres much to discuss... but yeah, IF the 'hello' part 2 posts WERE the big announcement, it would be nice if the XDA powers that be just posted 'Sorry, thats really all he had to say, he wants to meet devs at a music festival, thats it... he is gone now, go about your business'. I just really hope he doesnt think an 'open dialogue' is a HUGE announcement, and actually has something WE care about. He may just think that was huge because, well its his thing... his job... to us its like, yeah, another source for cut n paste responses... great... oh and one not on FB or Twitter! How convenient!
Whoa! Did this just get moved to 'off topic'???
Wow... its like Samsung Mobile with negative comments!
whatever... Guess its not technically about a phone.

Oh, that's terrible.

Megaupload

A lot of ROMs/Mods/Files were hosted on Megaupload and none of the links are working now because of the government shut down the site I am LOST without my ROMs and Mods I guess that means that all developers have to upload the files to some other site then?
I lost my files too. I hope it will come back soon
Your powers of deduction have filled me with wonderment and awe.

Megaupload...
Yeah, this really sucks. I don't even get why they closed the place anyway. I mean yes it may have had a lot of "bad" files there, but it's not like it was MegaUpload who put it there...it was the users. Also, they are trying to filter out the copyrighted stuff. So it's not like they're not doing their job. *sigh* I hope it comes back. It was one of the best sites to download from since I got great speeds.
I didn't even think of the impact that taking down megaupload would have on Android ROMs... Hopefully most of you have backups :S
Damn in Megaupload allways the developers upload roms and another things...
this is bullcrap this is another way the government is trying to dictate us and control what the internet does
At least on my device, devs are used to upload on MultiUpload, from what I see.

Limewire was taken down in much of the same way, it was an OBVIOUS hotbed for piracy, i don't think they government should of had the ability to remove it but when they got rid of limewire, you had to know this would be coming at some point. There were legitimate uses for Megaupload but a lot/most of it consisted of people sharing pirated data
Yeah but Limewire was just for piracy and Megaupload wasnt, they had a lot of stuff on there that wasnt. They should have the power to do this, I think this is their response to the other day where a lot of website shut down, including this one, to try ot get the bill from passing. I think its all bull, WE are the people not them, WE are the majority and the majority rules.
My guess for the both of these sites fell under the SOPA rules that are trying to implemented before anything was signed into law. You can still go to megaupload and it will state the reasons that they were shut down. One of them being piracy act. Remember for those in the USA to vote this current administration out of office before all of our rights are taken away
SOPA=NWIH (no way in he!!)
This just another example of a tyrannical government shoving their noses just a little deeper where it doesn't belong. The internet is the only thing that still works in this country, and they just want to control it. I say vote em out, all of them. !Ron Paul 2012!
Devs have to upload them in other file upload sites.
the best idia to write to megauload to tell user acess to download personal file
and then move to anader upload
it posible connecting with proxcy usa ?
never mind
The way Apple sees it, any rom on there with a 'slide to unlock' is copy written material being pirated.

Has anyone else been the victim of maliciious adverts while visiting XDA?

I recently was on this site using my phone and (I'm not going to go back and figure out which advert was the culprit it's not my job) became the victim of the ransomware virus. I factory reset my phone rather than try to manually remove it. I had disabled my adblockers because though I can't afford to send money for your efforts (if I could I would but alas I live on less than $300 a month after rent and bills) I do feel like I should at least give something back and for now allowing myself to be subjected to 3rd party commercials is the best I can do. However this ended when that happened to me. You (XDA) has to put more effort into vetting the people who pay you to put their adverts on your site and or check to see that those adverts aren't being altered and used to mess with your reputation by attacking your visitors. Initially I was shocked that XDA may be a scam then after rationality set in I dug around and saw that the only fault (hopefully) of XDA is a lapse in security and that they too have been the victim of those green hat hackers. If that is the case, which I believe is the case you need to do something about it.

Sorry to hear that .some pop ups do show up when I'm searching threads with my phone but I usually ignore them and close the page . I'm happy to say I've never gotten anything bad from using XDA.
I have no problem with xda so far. I have joined this forum since 2014
But, my friend has problem. He cancels his registartion as new member because of this:

Yes, I had been subjected to a lot of malicious ads while using XDA on Android for a while, especially opening of websites that make the phone vibrate a lot and you can not go back from unless you close the tab. Really annoying. I haven't had this problem lately though.
I encountered this too. Not on XDA but when surfing Internet in general on phone.
I never use the build in Android browser any more but Chrome or Firefox app. Never had it since than anymore.
I root all phones and for those who do also root: freeze the standard Android browser in Titanium Backup.

SNote - kinda crappy

For a company that is so good at something's , this is a pretty bad app and desktop experience.
I am a heavy user of Gnote and Evernote.
And of late Synology notes..
You would think that since you have spent a zillion won on development of a phone with a great pen setup you would also spent a bit more time on making sure the note taking ability can be..
A. Be Synched .. (sync is on for notes on my phone and shows its synced to thier cloud via the bytes).
B. The file format can be read by your own desktop program. (The desktop version I have found is an April 2018).
While it will view/import a exported pdf..
it will give you an option to backup a *sdoc file but not import it.. (what's the point of this?)
So on Both of these above there is a fail at this point in my tests..
(due to miss-understanding by the reply posters to the original post I have edited to be clear about what has been tested)
While the phone shows that the notes have been sent to Samsung cloud..they are not linked back to the desktop app..
ie the desktop application not sync with the "said notes" after checking log in a few times..
As a suggestion (and this doesn't not have to be driven by the Korean side but could be by the international components within Samsung development).
Samsung development team, if you want to see a good note app in action buy yourself a Synology NAS and reverse engineer thier app and desktop program. ****..
As a suggestion to put forward a worthy idea..
"if your a lowly Samsung engineer, I have just given you a leg up the ladder.. crack this and you have made yourself a job..it would be then the best business tool ever. Especially for the Dex software development..'
Ok.. so we have on the desktop program the ability to import .SPD...snb...pdf
But not the *.sdoc export from phone.. transfered via network storage..But it will see the pdf version.
Really..
You can export the *.sdoc android format out but can't even import it into your own desktop app.
What's the point of that???
Seems the tail of the Samsung donkey is not talking to the head..
(reference to post 5 on this one,
as it seems that some have taken this as aimed at a nationality which has been explained,
it is not a jab at anyone but a jab at interdepartmental development for a better product offering..
as it happens this is not only a problem for Samsung but for a great many companies)
Rant over..[emoji41]

Pull ya head in..
who said anything about nationality?
Samsung is a multi national with programmers across the globe if you haven't noticed..
It's a review of said program..
And as one of my roles in this life is as a teacher and trainer I am pretty sure that the mix of Grammer I have used comes from yea old book of 'English'..
Not a 'hey Google - give me American English' computer driven set.
The point is.. and if you had done any research..
is that if you did..
you will find that it's been a few years since the first Samsung notes came out and since then they have gone backwards with it..
Not "dust" I would say that, plenty out in WWW land on it..
I would have used it on my Samsung Nexus 10 and a few other Sammy devices but as there are others ie Evernote that do the job well.
As a reference I travelled and worked across 38 sites in China and used Evernote extensively over a 4 year period.. while I had the Samsung Nexus 10 with the first Snotes on it..it never cut the cake for a truely worthwhile app. -- yes..went from the Asus Transformer to the N10 as a travel tablet ..
With a but of luck, it will get better and get the attention it deserves if it is viewed as a business app.. which by all accounts the phone is being aimed at..
Think Dex... As the feeling of a new ecosystem coming . (Refer to video added in next post of mine as there is clear indication that Samsung is aiming Dex as a B2B situation with customised B2B branded apps)
Anyway..ya'all got anything to say about the program or you just spamming threads?
On that note..pardon the pun..
Evernote writing works fine..
Synology note writing is still a bit too "artbrush' as in thick pen lines so as a note taker in meetings not quite there..
And to carry the theme on.. the new Lenovo with a touch keypad and writing abilities is looking good.. this is where it would be cool to see a foldable screen that is touch sensitive be made..something like that could be coming in a cover and we could fold it out to write on with the pen and with Bluetooth connectivity..
Bring back the pen and hand writing!!!!!

Jezz you got a bee in ya bonnet..
Since you can't let it go..
Exactly where with in the first post is there any reference to a nationality or a belittlement of one?.. please quote it...
The reference to "won" is in reference to money spent in research..
You might want to consider....
"what and how" you read something is not how the writer has "framed it"
What's going on in your head has nothing to do with this conversation about whether the note program with in the N9 is..
1. Synching to the desktop programme..
(As pointed out..for me it's not..
do some testing and report back if it works for you)
The ability for you to export a file prefix of *.sdoc to be exported back into the desktop program.. works or doesn't work..
(As noted, you can't do it and the program itself will not see the very format..but will see the older versions and pdf versions..)
As noted..I was able to find an April 2018 version of the desktop program..
Thus..the conclusion is..
There is not a lot of development going into this..
Which in fact could be and then make this a useful tool set for sammy mobile users for not only the educational space but business.
But as you only want to play the man and not the topic..
I suggest you bow out or report the original post.. and or post something on topic..and not out of your 'what I think I am reading into it'
And to just be clear of where the post comes from..
I do use the phone for business and have been playing around with pdf signatures.
Thus the ability to be on the road and getting a client to sign using the phone would be a fantastic tool..
At the moment I have been testing getting a client to sign into the note app..(as generally for compliance type documentation there is 10+ signatures)..
The ability to to transfer a high resolution copy out of the Samsung app in its native format is not there..as there is nothing to read it with.
It is noted that it will transfer as a pdf but this is then a flattened document and not as high resolution and or transparent background that would be ideal for electronic signatures.
And since I alluded to the Dex eco system. Which I term as ecosystem as the little I have played with it, is limited in apps that work well within it (for now)..
Reference..
https://youtu.be/umvnRlj9yN8
For the avid reader that has posted crap about the original post being aimed at Koreans, please note that the above video seems to me to be a multi racial character..do note he uses a lot of "we at Samsung are developing"...
All good.. as said..with luck they see value in this app and allocation of resources into it.
Personally I would like them to fold it into something like a full word processing type situation.
And as noted, users of Synology NAS have a great suite of apps at thier finger tips to use with a beast like the N9 on the road..

Let's get this straight...
As a person that has lived and worked in Asia for 15+ years.. China/Indonesia/Philippines plus have worked in Silicon Valley with Italians/Mexicans/Indians..
You guys are so barking up the wrong tree..
And yes, I have spent plenty of time in Korean/Japanese/German/Dutch factories in China..
So let's set this record straight..
Rant is at Samsung the company not the country or people it comes from..
NEVER was...

From my first post..
1: Investment in Snotes..chances are decision was made on a WON budget.. nothing Racist about that..
let's just giggle and say NZ budget..
2. Engineers - if you think that comment was aimed at any nationality you are sooooo wrong..
as I actually pointed out that if a lower ranking engineer (lowly and or starting out).. was to reverse engineer the Synology apps/desktop note taking program..
and take a peek of the code and compare it to what Samsung has got out there are the moment..
(noting that Synology is a Tiawanese company).. there is a high chance that some good development could come of it..
3. Is it the tail and donkey head comment that has got you guys so uptight..
jezz.. let's say.. the hardware v software teams..lol..
Donkey head being hardware.. tail being software..
No where in those statements am I talking about any Koreans..jezzzzz
Maybe you guys have never truely worked in a multi national environment.. ???
I am not a fan boy of any company and yes, Samsung has screwed it's customers a number of times.. the partnership of Samsung and Google on the original Nexus 10 and the screens turning brown is classic example..(I still have one and while it still boots and runs no one owned up to that production fault..)
The same for batches of S6 screens and I have documented this in other threads..
If I compare those two examples to the HTC EVO which is still being used as a tv remote..hands down the Taiwanese company screen wins for longetivity
So really... The rant is about making something better and who ever makes I don't really care..
There is actually apps available that are cloudbased..
And thanks for your suggestion..I will look to that pdf one you out forward.
So keep the thread on track and put forward better solutions instead of imaginary racial over tones..
Once again.. the note pen works well with in the SNote app.. the ability to export that out as a high resolution copy .. as yet, I have not found a suitable way..
That's not to say that I have not tried...tested and got frustrated with such a simple want...
The *.sdoc format as far as my research has lead me..is a locked down format by Samsung..
If you haven't done your research..Google..
s notes conversion
And have a read..plenty on it out there in WWW land..
Thread closed until any participant can enlighten me on the objective of this thread.
For the record, I don't think the OP was racist in any way. Maybe we need to take a step back and stop assuming any sort of criticism is racism.
