What's the difference between using something like APNdroid etc to control mobile data and just going checking
[settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile networks -> data enabled]
Does this do something different?
Effectively the same operation.

Thanks for the fast reply.
Does android not allow an easy way to toggle this? Why change the APN name instead?

As in the widget to toggle data connection on/off? You have to download third party alternative.
I got charged for data even with data when roaming unchecked. Apparently A-GPS disobeys that setting. Changing/"disabling" the APN should work regardless.

I have a HTC Diamond GSM. I would like to disable internet access through my cellular carrier (Rogers - Canada) and keep Wi-FI access only in order to avoid data charges. How can I do that ? In settings ? In registry ?
Thanks
Google 'nodata.cab'
Download
Install
You can then toggle which data connections you want to disable or enable.

prob solved
Ok....problem solved...mods pls close this Thread...
As title says....
i have already disabled HSPA and HSUPA through sgs tools but it seems i can't find anywhere how to disable GPRS and EDGE....could someone please guide me??i dont have a data plan and i only wish to use wi-fi....
Thank's for any help!!!
just delete the APN in settings or change it to something that wont work. this will disable any data use over mobile network
Thank's for replying,i've already done that....
i use apn on/off widget...
but what i really want is to disable the function completely to reduce battery drain as much as possible...!!
Long press power and something like "Data network" deactivate that. Should cope with the settings >>> wireless ... >>> mobile network >>> use packet data .
When you deactivated everything you can't really do more. You can't remove the whole data package from the phone.
Quick settings from the market is what i use . Mobile APN set to OFF = no data unless required = switch on .

It just changes the apn config to something invalid and back.

Yes but saves trying to strip stuff out of the firmware that may be more problematic .

There's always plane mode....
Or you can just take the battery out
Go to settings->wireless & networks->mobile networks and disable the data enabled option

It just does the same i thing i already suggested while installing an extra unnecessary app?
He wants to NOT use data AT ALL. So why the xtra app? No one is trying to strip anything out of the firmware here.

This does nothing different, just change APN settings to something unusable and thats the most you can do.
All
i miss the quick access to disable my mobile data/LTE/4G connection on the S5. S4 had it right at the top. Best i can find is a widget called 'Data ON-OFF'. Couple other apps/widgets would turn it off, but not back on. i would have to go into the settings, more networks, mobile networks, and check the box by mobile data.
anyone know of a way to get this in the drop down menu in the top? On the S4 it was just a swipe and touch on the 'mobile data' button.

Not w/o root access. You can follow these steps though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713752
thanks. widget works pretty good, just have to exit the program instead of bringing down the drop down menu. its like AT&T wants you to use up your data plan
I always use *#*#4636#*#*

yes, follow this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721550
And it will add the disable/enable data to your notification panel and quick toggles. Some carriers have removed that quick toggle from the panel.
Note that this will just disable/reenable all data, if you need to specifically disable like LTE only and fall back to 4G, you will need a app like phone info from the app store.

But with our AT&T phones not able to root would we be able to do that? In the tutorial it mentions needing root. Thats why I am asking
Yeah, I forgot that you are all locked sown on AT&T variants. You'll need to wait for a root method and then this will work.

May be you can try Hotspot shield or Hola.
I prefer Hola -better internet this gives per app proxy & in yhe list of apps try tethering apps
you may not be able to use wifi tethering if disabled form operators side.
If you use Hola then enable unblocker, enable acceleration, then tap on unblocker see the list of apps select the country you want & Run(play) the app.
but you can try VPNs(Hotspot shield & Hola) for same & report here if it works.
Hit Thanks If i helped.

Please try this
Install the apk
Then go into Settings -> Connections -> More Networks -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names. Once there, press menu, and choose "Reset to default". (Make sure you have at least one apn checked after resetting defaults)
Then try Tethering. You may or may not need to reboot after resetting APNs.
Let me Know
Get Wifi tether router set interface to wlan0 then create new APN, name whatever you want, apn to fast.t-mobile.com and make sure it's set to ipv4. Set tether provisioning in build prop to false. Reboot. Enable wifi tether and try it out, should be good. I set the build prop tweaks in 3c toolbox so it should stay, tethered around 12 gigs so far with no issue.
Go into airplane mode, then come out, directly after hit whichever one you want to do (wifi hotspot/USB tethering) and it should work without problems. I have tried and used both. If you have an easier way, please share!
Go to An settings and add dun to the end of the pan type. Works everytime. Not just Motorola, works on Note8 and V20
"An settings"? "pan type"?
Are these typos we have to decrypt? I don't have anything like this is my Network Settings.

Lol if he's typing on this phone I can understand it, I mistype a lot on this one. But I do look back and fix them. You should try the APN settings and see if they work for you. I still gotta stick with the airplane mode method.

No they don't. Maybe in one of them, but not mine.
If you go to sprint.com you'll see on the front page they include 10 GB of hotspot data. After those 10 gigs I believe it's throttled. I've had this for as long as I can remember.

That's not the plan we have. We've had our plan since 2007. Everything family plan I believe
I did mean apn lol. I also used 253gb of data last month.
WARNING about switching to a plan with free 10GB/mounth Mobile Hot Spot: Despite confirming with the Sprint phone jockey that Google Voice carrier integration would still work when I switched from my Everything to a Freedom Unlimited plan; it ended up breaking the integration and "cancelling" my Google Voice account. It took me about five days talking to Google and Sprint; and only after going back to the Everything plan, I was able to get GV working again.

I just acquired a stock Sprint Z2 Force on Oreo 8.0 and the usual Airplane / Quick Hotspot tap fix isn't working like it did on the E5 Plus and Z3 Play, both of which were also running Oreo - the hotspot never activates on the Z2. APN's are all greyed out and locked and there's no way to add another one as of now. I need Hotspot in emergencies only, but I do need it for those occasional situations. Any other workarounds? Thanks!
Update - APN's can be added (not edited or removed) when the phone first reboots, but adding the dun command to the default "internet x.ispsn" APN - under a new APN with all other settings duplicated (as was suggested) - doesn't enable the hotspot as of now.

Add dun to the end of the internet apn, then change the dun apn to x.ispsn
