CM6 extremely unstable? - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, for some reason all CM6 builds/ROMs based on CM6 crash pretty badly for me. Programs don't seem to fc but rather the phone freezes and the capicative buttons become unresponsive. I wipe everything before each flash but I still get the same problems.
I'm currently running the asim rom which has zero problems and excellent battery life. MCR21 (What asim rom is based on) also runs perfectly. CM 5.08 worked just fine but any builds after this point cause the above issues. I run stock kernels most of the time so I've ruled that out.
I don't currently have a2sd and install only a handful of applications:
adbWireless
Adfree
Adobe Flash 10.1
Bloo
ChromeToPhone
Dolphin HD
Flikie Wallpapers HD
Folder Organiser
Lastpass
Launcher Pro
Music Mod
Mute
OI File Manager
PSX4Droid
Quick Boot
Set CPU
SMS Popup
Titanium Backup
Trackball Alter Pro
Set CPU doesn't use profiles and I simply set it to On Demand. I can't see anyone else running into the same problems with CM6 so it must be something on my end, however other roms work just perfect so I'm baffled. Any ideas guys?
Thanks!

Have you tried another Froyo based ROM, such as Enom's? At a glance, it looks like all of the ones that work for you are Eclaire, which points to problems with software.
Have you tried running the system with NO apps installed? I know, it's hard to consider, but might help isolate an app problem vs ROM problem vs hardware problem.

Yep r21 is based on 2.2. I'm starting to think it might be an app problem as you say. Weird that it is only caused on CM6 though.

Try flashing wildmonk's latest CFS 950mV kernel and see if it helps...

I've tried this for the past couple of hours and while it does help to some extent I am still getting the occasional reboot. It seems to occur most when accessing internal memory such as Titanium Backup or browsing the SD card. I had previously thought the SD card might be playing up so I bought a new 8GB Class 6 card

darchdroid autokiller

I'm just wondering if you are supposed to use autokiller with darchdroid or not? I know some roms have some form of minfreekiller and I didn't know whether using autokiller is recommended or not.
I decided to try out Darch 2.7 a week or two ago. It's pretty good, but the first thing I noticed was that it was sluggish. I thought I had read somewhere not to use autokiller or a task killer with Darch so I tried a few reboots. Nothing seemed to help it so I installed autokiller and it made this ROM scream. I tried using OC widget to slow down the cpu when the phone is sleeping but it seemed to cause too many issues. Phone was slow coming out of sleep, heating up and so on. I just reset it to 710 and then removed it. This ROM is pretty good and makes me very excited for the work he is doing on cyanogen 6. Can't wait to get froyo on this thing.
Oh well even before I installed autokiller I thought it was blazing fast, and I had heard the same thing as you about using it. I know some roms have autokiller like tweaks built in and I'd assume that's why you shouldn't use autokiller, I just couldn't find out whether or not it should be used on this rom.

I don't know about ROMs, but there are some kernels based off of Darchstar's #15 kernel that have free mem tweaks imbedded, and it's specifically recommended that you NOT run autokiller with those kernels. Makes sense to me.
it depeneds, if it worked for you stay with it, but i dont use Taskkillers for my DD2.7, Why you ask? it came with one in system settings.
autokiller is far different than a task killer. It merely changes the settings that android itself uses to kill apps, it does no kill apps on its own. I use it on darchdroid and froyo with great results.
Alright there we go, thanks.

[Q] Some questions about CM7

Hi all,
With CM7 i'm enjoying my Milestone like never before. But since it's my first custom ROM, i have some questions though.
1. When returning to the home screen, 9 out of 10 times it reloads and rebuilds completely. How can i avoid this?
2. If it's a memory issue and i want to keep it in memory, how can i accomplish this without the risk of losing other essential apps from memory, like SMS and phone?
3. I read something about priorities for apps, how does this work?
4. Sometimes my device reboots randomly. My CPU is set to 900. Can this be the cause? If so, what's the best CPU speed setting?
So far for now, but i guess i'll be back with some more ;-)
Thanks in advance,
Gerard

I'm no expert so someone please correct me if i'm wrong and sorry for all spelling errors.
What version of CM7 are you running? If u'r running RC3 0.08-11.03.16 that homescreen Redraw (problem number 1) should be minor, something like 1 out of 10 times, atleast on my milestone. There is "Keep home in memory" setting in Cyanogenmod settings -> Performance, make sure it's enabled and for the problem number 2 enable "Keep SMS in memory". You shouldn't care much about app priorities cause CM7 memory management is taking care of that pretty well. Random reboot are DSI errors, they are minor in the newest CM7 version but there is no failsafe way to avoid them, if you don't want to chance the kernel, you can read about that in CM7 for milestone thread.
Thanks, i just can't find the "keep SMS in memory" option?
Then you probably won't have the newest version of CM7. You can find it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941346 and flash it just like u flashed it at the first time. Just wipe cache and dalvik cache from open recovery and you will get to keep all your personal settings and files/apps.
That's the one i have and i already found it. But thanks again!

A few answers of my own:
1) The CPU speed is probably NOT the cause of your reboots, but if you want to be sure, try it for a week. 700 is safer, 550 is default.
2) If it is your CPU overclocking, you may be able to fix it by upping the voltage on your overclock. This will lead to a bit more heat and a bit more battery drain, but should fix the reboots if CPU related
3) I would look at the SUPERCHARGE your Milestone thread about memory management settings. Although Zepps's settings and scripts are meant for tweakers and are probably a tad aggressive if you don't know what you are doing, they did speed up my phone by 200%.
I would recommend installing AutoMemoryManager and using the mild settings if you want to do something less aggressive than the Supercharge scripts...
You will get some of the benefits of the supercharge and a very low risk of apps getting killed by the memory manager.
My 2 cents!
thanks caz.
I'm pretty sure the new minfree settings that I've been testing out are the best of both worlds... superfast and background friendly.
I hadnt had a chance to update the thread yet and post the new script.
But for those interested, this should really work great... 6, 8, 24, 26, 28, 30.
Thanks all, i'll look into those things. By reading that is, because i've got a lot to learn!
Hi all,
I'm still experimenting and impressed by this ROM. Just now I performed a fix permissions to prevent apps from fc. That modified the read & write permissions of all apps. I assumed it couldn't hurt to try, but now I'm wondering what it did exactly. There aren't any noticable changes. Can anyone fill me in?
Thanks,
Gerard

I'm not sure what you mean, but this is my first custom ROM coming from stock Eclair on my first Android device.
So I have no idea which is the best, but I do know that I'm very impressed by CM7. It runs perfectly on my Milestone, so I feel no need whatsoever to try another.
Yup, for sure

I can only speak for myself, but I haven't had one single problem so far. Shooting pictures and videos works fluently on my device. I am also not aware of any possible known problems, but maybe others can confirm this.

CM 7 Release Candidate RC 4.0 available on Nook Color

It is finally here!
http://reviewhorizon.com/2011/03/cyanogenmod-7-0-rc-4-release-candidate-for-nook-color-available/
...and brings hardware acceleration
Straight from nightlies to RC........ wow
Ok, for those interested, i do not believe this will have the video lag fix.. i do not get how this can be an RC level release....
I just installed it and it seems to work fine, including YouTube. No lag detected, at least on my Nook Color.
Anyone know if the sleep issue has been resolved?
Or if the menu lag/garbage collection issue has been fixed? When I tried it about a week ago certain apps such as Reddit is Fun were basically unusable due to the extreme menu lag.
thank you XDA
You've given me a very nice tablet for cheap.
Glad to donate. This is really fun!
CyanogenMod-7.0.0-RC4 has arrived
CyanogenMod-7.0.0-RC4 has arrived
http://www.cyanogenmod.com/blog/cyanogenmod-7-0-0-rc4-has-arrived
The next round of RCs have arrived. From RC2 until now has mainly been bug fixes and we’re getting near the final state. In this release, there may still be some lingering GPS issues on the Evo and the N1 call audio bug hasn’t been fully fixed. But if you were happy with the previous RCs/Nightlies on your device, there is no reason not to update to this one.
That being said, this is the most stable version of CyanogenMod 7 to date and will probably be the last RC before the final rolls around. The most notable new fixes are on the tablet side of devices. The Nook Color, for example, now has working hardware acceleration. Because of these fixes, many of them are receiving their first RC. There was also a big fix from AOSP for EGL issues, which is why all devices bumped to RC4 from RC3.
Feel free to grab CM7-RC4 (or RC3.14159265358979323846264338327 as we call it internally) from ROM Manager, our forums, or our mirror network if you prefer manual downloads.

Try the new version of Wake Timer in the Market. Works for me on Froyo.
Are there any major issues in RC4 that should make me hesitate to move up from Nookie Froyo to CM7?
Does the internal media partition work properly on this ROM?
Sent from my Nook Color!
Only issue I had was that I had to manually install google apps to get the market working.
Other than that- I miss the Tablet Tweaks.
can i flash this over the 29 nightly with out wiping
Yes.
10char
Nightly over nightly gave me no problems.
You might be fine.
Worst case is that you would have to boot into recovery to re-flash the rom and wipe data and cache, so just make sure to back up your current rom.

The issue was that you couldn't actually sleep the device... death sleep or something in the kernel and the nook color. Basically this means the device was always on and using about 2% of the battery per hour even while "off". That pretty much means it can't go on the wifes NC.
Where do you get Android marketplace apk? I just flashed this and now I don't have a market place. I'm coming from phiremod 5.2.

quick question from someone who's never messed with nightlys before my nook...why would I install this instead of nightly build 32? I'm guessing the RC4 would be just a really good nightly build that they feel is ready for release, yes?
Edit: I just noticed that the RC4 was just posted, so I think what I said is basically right.
Another edit (sorry): also, can someone tell me what clearing the cache does (or doesn't do if you decide not to do it) when you switch or update roms?

The cache consists entirely of files that can be thrown away as they get regenerated by apps as needed. When you upgrade your ROM it's recommended you clear the cache so that the system and its apps don't get confused by cached files that represent scenarios that are not relevant to the ROM you're running.

I would really like to know if this is fixed in the RC release too.
Just flashed it to my NC. I went back to Zeam launcher just becuase it's what I was using on Nookie Froyo and I had all the settings & shortcuts backed up already. I also added Button Savior for those times when the status bar buttons are hidden. I really like the "lens" lock screen as it's much more convenient to swipe down on a 7" screen than across.
So far I haven't run into anything that doesn't work. Titanium Backups of my user apps went in quite happily. My Angry Birds can rest easy, their hard work has not been in vain
The only hitch so far - my Titanium restore of Thumb Keyboard did not work as expected. Under input settings, the checkmark refused to go on. I re-installed from the Market, enabled it successfully, and then restored the data only from Titanium.

[Q] I9000 memory problems

Hello everyone! I've been following this website for a while and have been using HellyBean on my device.
I'm using the most recent version, 27/09 and I am sad with the RAM problems I'm having. Simple things like writing a SMS can be a nightmare at times because the keyboard goes away and it does not appear again! Using the AOSP browser it closes a lot and the wifi icon goes gray constantly.
I've tried to do a clean install twice but this happens every time. Has anyone been having these problems or is it only me? Anyone knows how I can fix it?
Thanks in advance!
After a reboot how many free RAM do you have? Have you installed apps like whatsapp, skype etc. they need huge mem ...especially the Gapps ...and our device only have 512MB RAM less reserved for the Kernel to be used by some drivers (video, capture, JPG) for DMA (Direct Memory Access)
What kernel uses HellyBean in Stock? Maybe try Sema-Kernel with BigMEM-Libs gives you up to 409MB RAM available for the Android System, but breaking the video recording in 720p, maybe it could help ...

After a reboot, the device reports 134 MB free. There are a lot of apps running and changing the RAM at the beginning but it stabilizes at around 130 MB and 120 MB. Here everything seems ok. I had some heavy apps, facebook, facebook messenger, skype (installed but not actually running, stopped using it) and firefox. Firefox was the only app I had trouble before but it is normal for it. Maybe Gapps but I find it strange to happen only now.
HellyBean uses the Devil Kernel by default. I used the option that gave me slightly more memory than default but still with access to the 720p recording. I changed to Semaphore Kernel to try and see if the same happened. Installed the slim version and it still happened. I now have the normal version because videos didn't work, I don't know why. I'll try the Devil Kernel again with the extreme memory option. I'll have no camera but let's see what happens. I'm not expecting miracles though. If it worked once with the normal amount of memory it should still work now...
EDIT: By the way, to clarify, facebook, facebook messenger and skype are not on my device anymore. firefox still is.
Experimenting now with the Devil Kernel with the Maximum RAM option (439 MB w/out camera)
Hmhh okay ,maybe you can test your origin HellyBean later ( without using facebook and so on ),and see what happened..
For Testing i i think the devil kernel with maximum RAM option is good, but i think you need the camera, so it is no option for daily use, or what do you think ...
As is said there are many apps which consumed much of ram and so android has to restart different apps often ...
Our device only has 512MB RAM...is it the latest helly bean version based on android 4.3 ???
But when you have tested hellybean with stock kernel AND Sema-Kernel and it still happened, could it be a bug in hellybean? Did you a clean installation ???

Testing with Devil Kernel now with the maximum RAM option (439MB). It has no facebook, facebook messenger and the skype app is unninstalled now as well. So far so good! I've actually managed to use Firefox and write a message in a floating window with no problems at all. I've been going at it for a while now, testing Firefox, the AOSP browser, playing games, sending SMS, updating stuff, everything works fine. Except now for the camera. While I don't normally use it I don't like it disabled. Just for testing right now.
I found a screenshot I took, the phone reported only 17MB free and 379MB used. Calculator says it was only 103,6MB, unless something else escapes me, and facebook was restarting and poweramp and voodoo sound were battling to stay running since I was trying to listen to music. I thought it might be some kind of memory leak or something since it did somekind of soft-reboot (shows boot screen but doesn't ask for pin code) and everything was fine for a little while...
I don't think there are anymore heavy apps running on my phone. It's too bad the phone is considered almost ancient now but I'll have to deal with it for now. No money for a new one so cool as this one!
HellyBean is now based on 4.3 for most of it's compatible devices. It includes the GT-i9000 I use.
I first did a dirty flash on a new version. But that started the problems so I did a clean flash ( lots of wipes since I screwed up the kernel during install ) twice and it still happened even with a more recent version. Visiting the thread doesn't seem to show much regarding this problem. I can't post there yet or I would ask them first since it's the same ROM. They are only talking about SWAP and I don't use it. So it doesn't seem like a HellyBean bug. I thought also maybe it was a CM bug since HellyBean is based on it... But I would probably find more people in my situation if it was like that. I would like not to downgrade to the last version I had no problems with since I like a feature that came with the new version (deactivated because it could be that feature was a problematic one) but if this lasts I'll do that.
Thanks for your suggestions!
EDIT: It seems to be fixed! Don't ask me how... I didn't want to get the DevilKernel from the site since I already had it on the device but I had to install the last version again which I used to test the maximum RAM option I talked about. Since I had no problem I started decreasing the RAM amount until I got to the default option. And everything is working fine! I really don't get it why a dirty reflash fixed that a clean install did not. Sad because I couldn't figure out what was happening... But it's normal again... Lucky me, I guess? Anyway, thanks for your time trying to help me! I appreciate it!
No Problem therefore it is a forum !!! And it is great that i could help, or not in your case
It is strange, but the main thing is ,it works...however ...
Thanks for reporting!!!

[Q] Nook hd/hd+ custom stock rom?

I know a lot of people have created custom roms based on cyanogen or carbon, but what about just enhancing the stock rom? is that even possible? i know leapinlar has added a few scripts that do things like "enable unknown sources" but what about adding a cm-like "performance" menu to the nook stock rom? or merging elements from certain roms into the nook stock rom? sorry if this has been asked before, i was just thinking about how awesome it would be to have everything good about nook and android running on one rom as opposed to switching back and forth
i was thinking about something similar to this too. there are several things i like about the stock nook rom, mainly the gui, the keyboard etc. it just looks more pleasant from an aesthetic standpoint. however, i also like the extra performance offered by cm. so i guess best case would be if someone could 'import' some of the gui elements from the nook rom into a modified rom. however, i doubt something like that would ever happen
I like the stock ROM if someone could add a full bar with a home button it would be awesome

i wanna use my wiimote on my nook hd with epsxe the bt update in android 4.2 screws that up i have cm7 on my nook color and wiinote works can someone help me port it to my nook hd
I like the Nook Stock Rom Interface & Carousel
I also like the Nook stock rom gui and specially the cool carousel! I only wish that we could hava OTG and MHL easily, the ability to do folders for the apps and have a more powerfull settings interface. I like how the flow was conceived for menus and back bottoms because it makes it easy to navigate and very intuitive, it just works. I wish it was as fast as the CM 10.2 I have on emmc. Did I said I love the app Carousel?
anyone happen to know of a good paper theme on the play store? i was thinking maybe i could kludge together a mediocre facsimile of the gui. i know a few of the launchers support themes but i've tried searching the play store but i've found theres nothing that really comes close to it.
I would also like to see an enhanced stock rom. I actually like the GUI too, and rooted with the 3rd party app script it's pretty good. Add some customization and performance options and it would be really excellent.

I must be doing something wrong. I have run CM 10.1 and 10.2 off an SD card and stock performance is way better. I like the Nova launcher interface, but definitely thing stock runs better.

It is because you are running from SD. On these devices the SD install runs slower because of i/o issues. That was not true on the Nook Color. If you try CM10.1 on internal memory, it runs faster. Or you could try the hybrid, it runs faster too because /data is on internal memory.

So, 10.1 (10.2 too?) at least runs about as good (or better from some of the above threads) when loaded right on the Nook?
I'm tempted, but my wife says she is getting random reboots. I supposed I could install it (I have my squaretrade warranty after all) and see how well it works. The only other issue I think I'd have to deal with would be the package file is invalid and error (-24). So far those haven't come up on stock.
Nook Stock Rom performs best compared to CM ROM variants

Actually the Nook Stock Rom runs faster on my HD+ than CM 10.2, CARBON-JB-UNOFFICIAL-20131006-0213-ovation and Xperia-2.3.9-CARBON-JB-B11-ovation (CM 10.1) Roms running from emmc. I experience lag time while moving from App Drawer to home screen and vice versa. The only reason I use a CM ROM instead of the Stock is because I want to use the USB OTG function to use USB devices from the charging port (Thanks to verygreen for enabling this on the CM Rom).
My favorite and best performing ROM so far is Stock Rom with Enable Unknown Sources (to sideload apps) and Root (thanks to leapinlar). I will try probably today or tomorrow the Stock Rom and use the USB OTG App (USBHostSwitcher.apk) included in the Xperia Carbon Rom to see if it works on Stock ROM with root. If so... back permanently to Stock and bye to CM Roms until they perform better than Stock.

anyone know how, or if its even possible to pull the stock nook wallpaper and/or color scheme and apply it to other 3rd party roms? i really like the soft, textured paper theme, but i still cant find anything remotely similar in the play store.
