In AT&T's infinite wisdom, they removed the menu option for switching between the 3G and 2G/Edge networks. I found the following on the forums on how to force 3g or 2g on the Captivate.
Enter the Phone app.
Dial *#*#197328640#*#*
Select [1] DEBUG SCREEN
Select [8] PHONE CONTROL
Select [4] UE STATE CONTROL
If you want 2G, select:
[3] CHANGE RAT TO GSM
If you want 3G, select:

Do any of you android developers have the ability to create a widget that does this for us? Something simple like press it once and you are in 2G, press it again and you are back to 3G? I'd pay $2 for that (or buy you a couple beers if you live in Denver.)
Backstory: I get HORRIBLE 3G reception at the office. So my phone tries desperately to find the 3G network with very little love. So I don't get 3G speeds but my battery gets drained. Edge works awesome at the office and is fine for getting emails and synching. I'd like to easily go to Edge in the office and then turn it back to 3G when I go out for lunch or go home. I've looked through the market and have not found something that does this in a simple way. If you read this and would be interested in such a widget, please add a comment so developers can see demand beyond me.

The OP just detailed the process for switching the radios in their post... They know how to do that already. What they are looking for is a widget that can do this so you don't hebert to fumble around jun the service menu.
I'll add five bucks to they put somebody can get it done.

This would be awesome if someone could make it happen. The SGS info works really well and did make it easier, but it's still somewhat of a hassle going through all those menus.
Yeah...that's better, but still not what I was looking for. I hadn't seen that app yet, so thanks for pointing it out. I'd still like a widget that allows me to toggle 2G/3G with the push of a button.

Sorry If I didnt make that clear, but my post is a program that gets you to the service menu without entering it manually,Yes you still have 2 do the steps but easier as far as getting into the service menu. I do understand that you are looking for a 1 button switch back and forth and hopefully someone will find it or make 1.
I have tried using the APN on/off widget, but found it ineffective. Wish some one could come up with an widget that Actually works on ALL AT&T ANDROID DEVICES as AT&T disables the toggle between 3G and Edge feature.
Smoda widget kind of does what you want, although I think it may disable data all together.
Can't be done unless you root your phone and install a custom ROM. Thats why you can't find a widget to do it.
I've written Toggle 2G that can do exactly what your asking for and combined with the Locale app can even do it automatically. But will require installing a custom ROM on your phone.
Cheers,
MB
P.S. I live in Centennial, so I'll take you up on your beer offer if this helps
Edit: I haven't done much research on the Captivate, so I don't know if there are any ROMs that will work.
@sfernadez:
I have been using that app for a while now... it makes it slightly more convenient, but it's not the simple 2G/3G toggle that we are looking for.
All of the widgets and apps that are supposed to do this just turn data off altogether on the Captivate.

I need an app/widget that easy switches between 2g & 3g on a Hero rom... i know there are a lots of apps for this like usefull switcher and 2g/3g widgit that takes you direktly to the settings for 2g/3g but this doesn't cut it. Becasue on a hero rom when you go to the settings there is no "use 3g only" setting...
So does anyone know of an app that it self kind of forces the phone to use 3g or 2g without just taking you to the settings as a shortcut?
This would be helpful to me as well. I use 3g while driving to and at school, but at home, I live in an area that currently doesnt get 3g so I switch it off. It would be so much easier if there were a widget like the WiFi and Bluetooth that the Beautiful Widgets app comes with.

but really, i assume you are on a sprint leak rom, and are used to the sense widgets. i feel your pain. i use an app called juicedefender (when i'm on a sprint rom) and it has a widget called APN off or something like that. the app its self is badass but that widget is... superbadass. check it out it maybe exactly what you've been looking for.
Have you long press on the screen and set it up that way? Choose widgets, go to settings and select mobile networks.

Hi everyone,
Okay this might be a dumb question but I'm going to ask. Is there a way to remotely enable/activate the GPS and WiFi on my Android phone through a text message? I currently have GPS Tracker, Lost My Droid, Real Time GPS Tracker, Seek Droid, SMS GPS Enabler, and Where's My Droid installed on my phone to try and remotely turn on my GPS and WiFi. The problem is that yes sending the text to my phone and have the sound go off for Where's My Droid and Lost My Droid works, but the problem is having my GPS and WiFi turned off on my phone and not hearing because its not there. Yes, their are plenty of good apps that let you track your phone if your GPS is on, but they do not allow you to turn on GPS and WiFi through (SMS) text. So all and all, is there an app or apps that can do this for me, so I can do what I want to do?
Any information would be helpful, instructions would be better lol.
Thanks, II

I am the Dev of seek droid. Why leave the GPS disabled? It really does not conserve that much battery. Enabling the GPS does not leave the GPS turned on or even give the GPS any power unless the application you are using requests GPS.
Go pick up tasker from the market, and you can create a profile to have it enable gps whenever you get an sms.
You should probably have taker already anyways. It's a beast.

For some reason on my phone if I leave the GPS enabled it will drain out my battery in a few hours (8hrs). Where as if I turn GPS off, my battery has lasted up to almost 16hrs which is double and it is the only setting that I have changed.

Thanks for the advice pizz0wn3d. I will look into Tasker and see if it works for me and what I need it to do.
f you don't see the satellite dish in the notification bar then it really shouldn't use any battery, even if GPS is enabled. If you have location stuff turned on so the GPS is being used (i.e. you see the satellite dish in the notification bar) it will use battery.

Let me know and I can send you the profile I use. It makes the phone talk (alerting them that gps is being remotely enabled to track the phone down) and sends a confirmation text to the number that activates the gps. Then you can use "wheres my droid" or whatever else to track that S.O.B. down.

Bob, I do know this. For some reason my Map app starts up on its own and launches Latitude causing my GPS to activate and stay on. I don't want to uninstall Maps or Latitude because I do use them. Its easier to just turn off GPS then hassle with trying to find the source of the problem, in truth.

Well the way my profile is set up, whenever I receive a text with a certain phrase in it, it'll turn on the gps. Along with a few other things
It's not one of the advertised features because it's just one of the many things you can do with it.
I'll try to post a dropbox link in a few minutes.
Edit: This oughta work. Import this into tasker.

It should be able to import after you paste the xml file into:
/sdcard/tasker/profiles
Then just hit menu -> profile data -> import one profile

If you use Latitude, it will be on all the time and cause battery drain because it needs update your location 24/7 even if Gmaps is not used. You don't have to uninstall it. Just make sure you log out of Latitude if you don't use it.

Well for the lock screen; I was trying a remote lock down after I enabled the GPS tracking, so they could not turn it off, other then removing the battery of course. The only thing I can do right now is, set screen time out to 7sec. which is the smallest amount Tasker allows. The lock in Tasker is a joke because if you click on the notification bar at the top and select something you can bypass the lock, even in full screen mode.
As for the Ringtone/Ringer; I was trying to setup the phone to ring when people text me, similar to that of Where's My Droid, but with a twist. When I get their text, the assigned ringtone under their contacts or from file would play, that way I would know who it was without having to look at my phone every time. For this one in particular; do you or someone else know how Where's My Droids setup works? Then I can try to base it off of that. From what I can tell, it tricks the SMS into using the the ringer system and not the notification system. So a bait and switch from SMS Receiver to Cell Receiver. That's all I know for now.
Thanks for the link! I'll go through it to learn some more about Tasker.

I've never tried to set up a remote lock through tasker, I just had it set up to enable the GPS so I could lock+retrieve it via wheres my droid/lookout. But i have heard that the tasker lock down was pretty weak >.<
I actually never realized the phone didn't support custom tones for contacts outside of the calling ringtones. That actually sounds pretty difficult to implement via tasker. You would first have to disable notifications from your sms app so the tasker profile wouldn't just play a sound over that one. You'd also likely have to create a separate profile for each contact that you want to have a custom sms tone for.
I've seen plenty of 3g/4g radio toggle widgets but none that do it automatically.
I 'm willing to pitch in towards someone willing to develop a 3g/4g radio manager for the TB. I'm sure I'm not alone.
I think it could be something as easy as an app that toggles the 4g radio on when the screen wakes up and toggles 3g on after x minutes of inactivity. The span of inactivity could be set in a menu option. All that would be required aside from that is a widget to toggle the radio manager on or off.
I would pitch in! Seems like it would save the battery.
Any updates on this??
fwiw I haven't seen anything to even suggest something like this is in development.

It's a toggle, not a radio manager.
Tasker could sure be modded to do this

The Verizon network has what's called eHPRD. That's supposed to switch it for you when your signal runs low. I personally don't get a good 4g signal so i switched to rev A along with CDMA prl. It works and I always have a data signal.
I would be happy for a widget on my home screen that I can press to toggle between 4G and 3G
In the market place there is an app called lte 3g/4g. It is just for the thunderbolt to do just what you have wanted. It's been there for a long time now.

LTE OnOff in the market, dials into the support menu (or whatever it's called) where you can change the radio. A bit of a pain, but better then having a dead battery 6 hours into your day.
This doesn't work on the Droid 4, the only option is to turn off the radio entirely.

You need lte onoff as I stated earlier. Motorola has seen fit to remove the option in settngs to run on cdma only. the app I listed takes you into a support menu allowing you to select the bands through a drop down.
Widgets will most likely not work as the setting is in the framework and is not easily changed.
