How can I turn off 3G and use just 2G? SOLVED - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I've had my Galaxy a few days now and I noticed there's no obvious option to turn off 3G like there was on my old Topaz.
Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off 3G (not data connection, I still want to use 2G) to save battery life.

Go to settings > wireless and networks > mobile networks > use only 2g. The option is there.

Erm, that option isn't there, all it says in mobile networks is:
Data Roaming
Access Point Names
Network Mode (this is only GSM/WCDMA switching)
Network Operator
I bought my phone as handset only so there's no branding and is rooted (option wasn't there before rooting either).
Can anyone help? Is there an app that can help?

My options changed when I upgraded to the newest firmware available in Australia. GSM is 2G and WSDM is 3G.

I downloaded an app/widget from the market called DCSwitch ... it allowed me to disable/enable my HSDPA radio with the touch of single button on my homescreen.

XXjvo mobile data problem?

Today i flashed my gti9000m to 2.3.3 successfully with oden but for some reason my phone can not pick up my mobile data/3G signal even when i set it on, i am with virgin mobile canada
Any suggestions for a fix?

carrier settings
you will need to ring virgin andget the mobile data carrier settings for your service on your phone. These settings are in settings>wireless and networks>mobile networks>access points.
In there, should be the specific settings for the carrier ie. virgin.
Without these settings you will not be able to browse the net on your phone or send receive sms or mms. Hope this helps.
Hey thanks for the access points advice I just used the find access points on the APN settings abduction it worked perfectly!
thanks again!

Don't forget to flash a modem that supports the 850MHz band KC1 is great.

JVO does support WCDMA850 by default.

Thing is there is a fix for data and roaming issues on NA networks the KC1 modem has that you probably should be using. That being said... I've used them both side by side and you'll get longer battery life with JVO. So its a trade off

Is it possible to disable the cellular network features but keep 3G data?

Is it possible to turn off the cellular features like calling and text messaging but keep 3G data activated? Like how you can go on airplane mode but turn wifi on manually, but for 3G instead.

3G is data through the carrier. If you are in airplane mode, 3G is off.

Yea but is there any other way to disable the sending and receiving of calls and txts and just leave data active?

Any ROM can do this: *#*#4636#*#* push Phone Information and change the network to EVDO only. Make sure to put it back though.

Thanks thats exactly what i was looking for.

I don't know how an unlocked phone works but I'd say download Phone Info from the market, open it, go to phone information, and set it to WCDMA Only for 3G, GSM Only for 2G, and LTE Only for 4G. Assuming you're on jellybean that is. If you're on ICS then search in either general or Q&A in the Atrix HD forums for a thread called build.prop and do the steps there.

I did exactly that before you replied. Works fine, saves battery. Thanks mate

Hi
If possible can you pls help me on this as I'm also facing the same issue with this device the method mentioned above doesnt seem to work on mine.
Thanks
Add APN or use app "Network"
I also wanted to shift to gsm network only to save battery.
I installed a app named "Network" by "Philipp Magelow" and changed the mode to "GSM Only" and later added a APN(which was not added by default)
Now I could access Edge data, which is sufficient for daily apps.

Go in mobile networks, access point names and create a new apn with 3g settings. Look on the internet for your carrier settings

add correct APN settings for your carrier in Settings -> Mobile data -> Access point names -> menu -> New APN
I did that but still no signal in 3g and 4g.

Go to dialer, type *#*#4636#*#*, go to set preferred network type and make sure you select an option that includes CDMA, LTE and Evdo
