Please, give me some advise before buying SGS - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
In one week I will get this phone and please- give me some answers.
I would like to root it and to put some very good custom rom and kernel as well as lag fix. My questions are:
Whitch complete programs for PC do I need for all these operations?
Would you give me a link for the best custom (or not custom) rom with Froyo, also for the custom overclocked kernel?
Also for good instructions how to do it?
I am asking because I have been used Milestone and Hero, there everything is clear for me, but here I am noob..

there is a sticky FAQ post with all the answers.

[Q] Just bought a G1! Few questions!

Hi
Just bought a G1 off eBay, very pleased nice price.
I have a few questions if you can answer them.
1. As far as i know the G1 is stock and runs (will it be) cupcake? Is it 1.5?
If i decide to upgrade a 2.2 rom can i downgrade to 1.5/6?
2. Is it easy to root?
3. Could you post a nice "how to flash a G1" tut?
4. recovery? is it installed via fastboot?
Thanks
And i hope you can answer these questions for me!
in market, search "Universal Androot" to get root permissions easily.
as far as rom upgrading, the forums have several tutorials that you can search easily so it would be redundant to repost them just figure out which rom you want and they give instructions in the threads
I prefer Biffmod 2.1, it runs smoothly for me(its Froyo)
Good Luck
Start Here work your way down thru each link before you do anything, READ!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Will take a look.

[Q] Please help me out guys!

A friend of mine asked me to root his phone for him. I personally have a rooted and ROM'ed Samsung Epic so this is not exactly new to me. My first question is what is the best way to root and ROM this phone? After searching around my head is spinning a bit about this. For my Epic I was able to do a one click root that also installed CWM. After that I was able to use Clockwork to flash new ROM's and kernels.Second the reason he gave me for wanting to root was to be able to have WiFi tethering. Am I going to need to install a custom ROM for his phone or is there an app that will give him this feature once we have his phone rooted? Thanks in advance for all of the help!
Quickest, basic answer...
For Root... [APP]SuperOneClick v2.3.2
For the tethering question, he will have to check out a Rom that offers it as one of the options (most do). Don't ask what Rom is recommended, he will have to make the choice depending on his preferences to the specifics offered in a Rom. There are plenty of choices here... Captivate Android Development
Your right about the ROM so I removed the question. I guess I was looking for some recommended ROM's that were stable and everything worked. Thanks!

[Q] I'm beginner!

The beauty of it is there are many ROMS to chose from, and the captivate is pretty much unbrickable (trust me, I've screwed up about 20 times in the past month alone) and I've brought it back to a working phone every time, so try flashing one or two, see how you like it.
The reason you can't find any threads on " what the best rom is " is because the best rom doesn't exist. The features I find to suit my needs may not suit yours.
Do you want a 2.2 rom? There are many of those to choose from, all stable.
Maybe a 2.3 rom, the newest samsung leaks, a few different features from 2.2
Since you're a beginner I don't recommend flashing ICS , those are still in beta form, thats just a brick waiting to happen.
So, pick a rom and read what it offers, if it fits those needs flash it, play with it for a few days if you don't like it flash your second choose, but seriously. READ READ READ, watch some of the videos that accompany the rom before you do anything, thats the best advice I can give you.
Be sure to Read all of the "Sticky" Threads... they have this stuck to them... View attachment 843677

I updated my phone to 2.3 few days ago.My bro said those custom roms are better, faster, etc... CM7.1 is good choice ?
I've never flashed CM7 so I can't give you an evaluation on it, some like it, some don't.
Darkyrom
Try darkyrom. It's super easy to flash, gives great battery life and is smooth as butter. Just go to darkyrom.com and under the forum section, go to base roms and download the JVP base, extract it and run odin, the rest of instructions are all in the forum =)

How to root Galaxy S

Hi,
I am fairly new to this and need advice on how to root my samsung galaxy s.
Details below:
Android 2.1
Baseband Version : I9000XXJM2
Kernal Version: 2.6.29 [email protected] #2
Build number : ECLAIR.XWJM3
Any assistance as to how i need to root the phone, new kernals and latest ROM will be appreciated
Using the search function and reading before opening a new thread is generally considered the best way to go about it my friend.

Reading & searching is always a good idea but often if new you don't really know what to search for so here is a little help.
If you just want root then go to cf-root Read through at least the first post. it is a lot but very helpful.
What you usually want is the cf-root with the last three characters of your build number. If it doesn't match try get one that is close. If you plan to flash a custom ROM then it doesn't matter to much which one you have.
If you want an easy way to have root and the ability to flash custom ROMS you may as well start with DarkyResurrection. It has an easy to follow thread and the download has everything you need in one download.
Alternatively if your goal is to get ICS then here are two tutorials that will get you through the whole process from beginning to end which I recommend doing either one of. Once done you will be in a great position to move onto any ICS ROM, Kernel or Modem you like. My personal favourite is Slim ICS with semaphore.

Lastly a great Samsung Galaxy Resource site: SamMobile. You need to register but it is free.
There are 2 ways that I know of to root your phone depending on what you want to do going ahead.
If you want to install a custom rom, then follow the instructions given above.
But if you want to keep your stock rom and root your phone to install some apps that work only on rooted phones then I would suggest that you use the SuperOneClick method.
Let me know if you need instructions for the SuperOneClick method and I will be happy to share it with you.

Install samsung kies and update to gingerbread. Then do cf-root.
I would advise to first upgrade to GB, which is much better version of OS than Eclair. If you are not able to upgrade using kies, you learn how to upgrade here: https://www.fixmystuff.in/FMS_Forum/threads/samsung-galaxy-s-gt-i9000-flashing-to-original-rom.46/
Then how to root here: https://www.fixmystuff.in/FMS_Forum...-i9000-rooting-gt-i9000-2-3-3-india-ddjv9.47/

Sorry ratl0lz, but this is not spamming. I have already written something for helping others and just asking them to visit the page instead of reproducing everything here. Just writing "CF ROOT" may not help for someone who does not know things as good as you know.
Thanks,

[Q] NooB Question

Firstly I apologize as I have found this being asked before, but not in these circumstances. I am new to android being a long time iphone user. I now have a N7000 that I used PC Odin to flash LPY. I have noticed all of the concerns over bricking and with my lack of knowledge I am thinking I should flash a custom rom to avoid these issues.
My question is which is a good rom to go with, ICS (Such as kingdroid 2.0 or something GB?) More accurately what is the best process? I am currently not rooted. I am ignorant to android and I have noticed a steep learning curve making the transition. I explain this to help understand why I am asking this question.
I have attempted to search, and I have browsed Dr. Ketan's thread, and I still cant find a good answer. I just don't want to have a bricked phone trying to get to a custom rom. Any help or suggestions is highly appreciated.
Should I root it first then use CWM to switch to another rom?
What custom roms are recommended for easy use out of the box?
Another quite simple question is if I saved all of my contacts to google are they currently synced, as in if I switch to another rom they will still be accessible?

What I would do if I were in your place: I'd revert to rooted GB like this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25285584&postcount=3
then I'd flash one of the CM9-based Roms, because they are the only truly safe ICS Roms ATM, and these are
1. official CM9
2. Asylum
3. Paranoid
4. MIUI
5. KANG
Also, your contacts are safe with Google, and you can restore them in no time at all.

Thanks for your response, when you say revert to a rooted GB is that the process through PC odin? Also does it need to be one of the safe roms? It seems the problem stems from a wiping command?
Hello!
Yes , use pc odin to revert back to gb, i did so, i used an prerooted stock gb .
Then follow chasmodos guides to go to ics again.
One more thing, to back up my apps so they are there on the new rom do I have to be rooted?

yes !! to use app like Titanium Backup !
or since you probably downloaded all apps from Google Play Market
then when u install your new firmware/rom you can simply download all of them from google play(but u lose the data of those apps )

You are posting in the right place (Questions and Answers) so no one will flame you here. It's the places people post like in development that get flamed. If you have questions, post here and someone will try to answer.
