I did. I searched Google as well... I can't find the app I was looking for. Thank you for your help though.
Alternative for what? What are you using now?

Barnacle wifi tether

I am using Wireless Tether which is downloadable from the market. It works very well and is easy to use. The only downfall of it is, it seems to heat up my battery pretty bad and drains the battery tremendously fast. Anyone that has tried barnacle or anet experience the same issue?

That's a good question. As Android continues to grow, it will probably be required to have one since these smartphones are doing more and more.

+1 to this. The locate and alarm feature is great. Plus, it scans every app you install and backups all contacts and pictures. And free, too. I think Lookout would be your best bet.
Hey guys,
Not my work or my find. But just posting this d/l link for you all. Allows you to pick a number for free, limited numbers though (I'm a 217 area code and it gave me a 765) but its a start! App is called TextFree and its pretty straight forward. Works like a charm. Thanks theMaginator!

Thanks, works great
Try text plus you pick a username and it acts as a phone number. Free on market
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
Text plus does work great. Your contacts know who you are when you text them, vs textfree where you have to let everyone know your new number

Is there any way to Txt to the phone number you get with the data plan?
Here is the website for text plus.
It actually directs you to the market and shows you the app in the market but doesn't let it download.

Has anyone been able to get a notification tone when you receive a new text?
Here is the APK, seems to work fine even though the market claims its not compatible.
OK so here is my current set up. Using GtalkSMS to redirect all my sms to the zoom and to reply from also using Google Voice got it working. So for now this should do.

GUYS (and GALS)!
There is an application in the Market called Quick Settings. If you have Froyo, this application has a feature that hacks the built-in Hotspot app and makes it work without carrier requirements!! I have tested it, and it works GREAT so far. Give it a shot!

Thanks:good::good:
If you are rooted, then just install Wi-Fi tether from the market. 4g and it works for me. And that way big red won't know.

what is the best tethering app out there?
I like PdaNet and use Blue Tooth DUN mode to connect my tablet. BT uses less power imo.

I usually use PdaNet via USB. It will even charge up the battery this way, albeit very very slowly.
Hi....I had flashed the latest version of philz kernel on my stock jellybean n7000. Following this I have noticed that im not able to send files via wifi direct. I can only receive.
Wifi direct is one feature which I love...pls give some suggestions to get it up and running.
Thanks

As an alternative to WiFi direct I recommend You this app:

It's way better than WiFi direct

talking about wi-fi direct alternatives, i would like to ask here for more wi-fi direct alternatives as i am on PA, also should the other person also have same app to be able to transfer through that app? or is that i can use this app and other person can still receive it via wi-fi direct?
Yes, the other person has to have this app installed.
But trust me it's worth of it.
The app works like this: receiver makes an WiFi access point (app does that automatically) and the other phone just connects.
Some other apps :
WiFi file sender
Hoccer (maybe spelled wrong)
Bump.
But as far anyshare is the best
Try it

Nah, I don't think so. Only original wifi direct can connect. I haven't seen any other app to send via WIFI direct.
Just send Your friend (or whoever You want to send files) anyshare and You're ready to go.
While I'm sending from my note to sgs2 the transfer is ~1.3MB/s and it's much easier in use. Wifi direct sometimes has problems with connecting, custom ROMs don't support it well. That's why I have used WIFI direct like 6 times in my life.
Just give it a try
Never knew of these apps...do they work on other phones as well? Thanks ! Will give them a try :beer:

Yes, they work on other Android phones. Idk what the minimum required version is but I think it's 2.3+
