I went under settings, applications, and I do not have an option anywhere under any of the menus including development menu to allow applications to install from unknown sources. I have done everything in the Captivate User guide(rooting, backup, recovery).
I am trying to install market enabler.
Phone is Rooted.
Go to the development section and look at the sticky called enable sideloading. Or you can load the stock rom and use sre and it will enable it for you.

Did you mean the "[How To] Enable Non-Market apps on Captivate (consolidated)" Sticky?
I am not exactly a power user yet. That was a whole lot of impossible for me.
Yes you found the right thread. You are going to have to get very comfortable with terms in threads like that if you plan to flash or modify your phone

SRE! I think it is suggested to un-root first. Check the sre thread, its a rom and kernel that roots, overclocks, removes bloatware if you want, unlocks tethering, installs busy box, installs app to fool the market so it thinks you're on another network and opens the ability to install unknown sources all in one update.zip.
Flash to stock with the odin one click and rename the sre file to update.zip and reboot into recovery and reinstall packages you'll have everything you ever want in a phone. For now.

No you can be rooted as long as your on the stock rom. I've flashed back and forth from sre to another rom a few times and as long as your on the stock firmware its fine if your rooted. Matter of fact I would recommend rooting stock, then clockwork mod recovery nandroid backup of stock rom before moving on to another invade there are problems. If you use Odin beforehand, I'm pretty sure it will wipe your backups making them useless. ymmv
I am having the same issue. When I try to install an app it says "Install blocked for security, your phone is set to block installation of application not sourced in Android Market". As a safty feature it will not let me install any file/app that was not downloaded from the market place. How did you get it to work? My friend has the same phone but thru verizon, he said all he had to do was go into settings/applications and uncheck some security feature. Please help.

I just want to take this moment and point something out to everyone else who has never used ADB or the command prompt before who is reading this thread:
It looks more intimidating then it actually is. Once you get in there and start fooling around, it's not as hard as you originally thought. I'm telling you all, take the plunge, and try it out. I promise it's not that hard, and if you run into trouble, there are literally thousands of people on XDA at any given point in time. Somebody will answer your question if they haven't already. Keep getting 2.2.1 updates after root. How can this be stopped? Its annoying to keep rooting only to get the system updates again and again. I'm rooting with a signed fr91 file. Any way to stop this?

Upgrade to 2.2.1 frg83 then use the one click super root to root 2.2.1 you won't get the update any more u can find it in nexus wiki

Download 'Quick Boot' from the market and use it to reboot the phone. Then, clear the update notification from the notification menu. The update message should go away for a while (mine lasted a week before it came back).
I'm still somewhat hesitant to upgrade to FRG83 and use SuperOneClick since some people in the thread are reporting problems. I love my phone how it is right now!

Are you and Memnoch30 referring to the post you laid out in another thread? I'm pretty sure you wrote detailed instructions on how to do the manual rage root using adb. Will this method work fine if all I want is to run stock 2.2.1 with root-requiring apps like setcpu and move2sd enabler? Sorry for being such a noob

I just installed 2.2.1 and used the SuperOneClick method to root the phone again. I had to turn the phone off, run the program, and then boot the phone for it to work. I suggest you try this method. It couldn't be much simpler.
Now i keep getting the new firmware update message and i cant seem to turn it off even with the quickboot. Any ideas?
Install the update, root again. Now really, this "idea" is 1 message above yours - what made you post?
Hm i tried to update but failed, could be due to tampering of the build number that I did previously but after that it didn't bug me anymore, at least not for now. Will try the superoneclick one next time. Thanks.
It might be back in several days, but if you've tampered with the system and advanced the build number - it shouldn't appear anymore.
yeah i sure hope so. will know in a few days
Does anyone know how I can get the apks for a couple apps that I cannot get in the market since I've updated to Froyo? You have to edit the fingerprint in build.prop to pretend you are still on Eclair JH7, for which you have to be rooted. Bite the bullet man.
I'm so nervous about it. I rooted my old G1 without a problem, but this phone was a lot more expensive. Have you rooted yours? Was it pretty easy?
There is a One Click out there. Super easy and painless! I have done it several times without issue Root with reckless abandon!

Easy as pie. On 2.1 it's one click. If you are on 2.2, it's slightly more involved, but if you were able to flash Froyo successfully, you can root it in your sleep.
appbrain
theres an apbrain app that allows you to push installs from market via webbrowser but Im still on eclair so......... but it works great you just enable it and browse the market from appbrain website, even from your phones browser pushed angry birds on today
This has been resolved in multiple forums
for everyone with this problem all you need is root explorer or something else that lets you view and edit the build.prop file. you need to replace the part that starts with ro.build.fingerprint to this:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon_wwe/inc/inc/inc:2.2/FRF91/231334:user/release-keys
Good luck.

So I've used root explorer and found the build.prop, but I can't do anything with it since it is a read only file (can't edit, rename, move, etc)...any ideas?
Did you actually look and tap the button on the top of root explorer as soon as you open it that says "Mount system as R/W" or something along those lines?
Long press on the file, that will open up a bunch of options.. Scroll down to open with text editor. Edit and save. The root explorer will automatically create a back up of the original

I just watched the 3 part You Tube Video on Flashing Cognition ROM to Captivate,I need to ask 3 things. First the video shows the One Click Root method though computer. I already have my root rooted with z4root app is this OK. After the new ROM is on the guy went to Market and got Ti Backup and he side loaded it can't you just load Std. way though Market?( I have the Paid Ver. of Ti Backup) Third question on the video he stated to use "restore All Apps with Data" but written on the Screen says to use "Restore Missing apps with data",which is it? I hope this my last question but I really want to sure of what I am doing before I try this.
Thanks for help
Would have been better suited in the General forum, but..
Rooting with z4mod = fine.
Getting TiBu from market = ...fine.
Restore all apps with data = literally restores all of your backups and data
Restore missing apps with data = restores apps that are not installed on the phone, ignoring ones that are installed on the phone.
Best to ask in Q&A section, but I'll still help you out.
1. Yes, that's fine. The way you root it doesn't matter, as long as it's rooted.
2. Not sure why he'd go to the Market to get it then sideload, but yes, you can get it straight from the Market, but make sure you know how to keep your donate version after a flash, as flashes (usually) wipe /data.
3. Restore Missing Apps with Data.
Thanks guys I really wasn't sure where to Post this. Yes I have Backup of Ti Backup folder on my computer.
Thanks again

Is there a easier way to Root your captivate, I have tried several one click or different ways and have had no luck. Anybody can help me with this or point me in the right direction that works? the one click app don't work I really want to add and run other apps.
And also the KIES software does not work it never did. I really don't like the software even after trying the lite version. I like Droid Explorer. Oh yea this is on a 2.2 Froy OS

Have you considered joining the party and flashing a custom ROM? They all come prerooted to make your lives easier. At least I know my ROMS, MikeyMikes and anything by designgears does. I have not tried the rest yet.
I would definitely follow adam's advice and just flash a new rom. here is a good tutorial to help you get started:

Adam's roms are great as well as DG's. Give one of them a try and realize how good of a phone the captivate really is.

If you are that stuck on rooting only, and one click really doesnt work for you (thats a first).
Google root captivate. A root update.zip should be very easy to find, put it on your internal sd card, reboot into recovery mode and select reinstall packages.
Id post one, but i am on my phone...
^ not going to be able to root on stock froyo at the recovery 3e wont let you install unsigned zips. The one workaround to this would be flashing a custom kernel via ODIN and then using that custom recovery to root.
Doh! I missed that.
Maybe odin to 2.1, and install a custom rom / kernel package...
My apologies if this has been asked before... I've spent some time searching both here and google, but I don't think I've found a thread that answers this question specifically.
First:
I've rooted (Using SuperOneClick) for the first time to use the "Battery Calibration" app (which works great by the way), but then started getting a little creative and removed a whole bunch of stock bloatware and other programs I don't use from my Bell I9000M.
Now, after using it for a couple of days, I noticed under WhatsApp settings under "About", when I hit the "Contact Us" button, it stated no Email App was installed (I removed the Gmail app, as I only use the built in Samsung Social Hub email). I didn't really notice if Gmail was the only selection in there to begin with, but it appeared weird to me.
So, while the phone was still rooted, I did a factory reset. After doing so, I noticed the phone was still rooted (I think - SuperUser was still there), and none of the Apps I originally removed were there.
Then, I thought I screwed up the Rom, so I used SpoofFW under root and manipulated the firmware version so Kies would allow me to redownload KC1. It did so, but after the ROM was installed, SuperUser was still there, but all apps were back.
I was under the impression that when you update your phone via Kies, it returns to full stock. Guess I was wrong.
So how do you bring it back to full stock, eliminating any traces of Root?
I've never installed anything beyond root... no kernal changes, new roms or anything else.. just SuperOneClick.
Can anyone help? Sorry about the wordy post.
SuperOneClick should offer the possibility to unroot too.
If not you'll have to flash an unrooted stock-FW (available at samfirmware.com).

It does offer the ability to unroot... is that the only thing required?
I'm asking as we all know, when we uninstall stuff in Windows, traces of the program are still hanging around.
Android is familiar with Linux, not Windows.
If you unrot and uninstall all apps which require root nobidy can say if your phone was ever rooted.

So all I have to do is unroot and basically install KC1 from Kies or ODIN to restore the Apps I've deleted and I'm good to go.
