Hi guys,
I am in dilemma, in India we don't have 3g network and to download huge games data for my android is impossible. I can't even find a free wifi network.
So is there any way around to get my net connection from my laptop to my android. Like a wifi hotspot??
Depends what phone you have and if it can hock into an AdhoC wirless network.
I guess you have a desire (i checked your post history)
http://www.ott.net/knowledge/htc-desire-adhoc/

May help I guess. GIYF
Also you could search reverse tether if you want to do via USB.

What you want is called tether but in this case wired tether which is in most ROMs here

Actually I think he's looking for the inverse, which I've seen people look for before. I don't think I've seen a solution though.
I think he wants to do the oposite. Use the internet connection that his laptop is already using so that his G1 gets internet.
If that's the case, then please pass your phone to the nearest person and go read some internets...

Question is, why would you want to? Only reason I can seem to think of is if the laptop/desktop is connected through a wired connection, meaning you have no wifi at your house. If you do have wifi, and your laptop is connected through wifi to your ISP, then your phone can also connect with it's wifi adapter to the same AP.

Wow I just assumed he wanted to use the phone as a router.
I was sharing internet through BT and Wifi for some time, but did not succeed to do it over USB. Beside there is one big problem: even if you will set everything on linux level and have internet in your phone, Android will not know about it. So apps which don't make checks for internet connectivity will work, but these which do, will be waiting for internet. I've found some workarounds, but that problem is really frustrating.

Yep dont need to pay for tether

Got to test it out with my nook today - it worked great!
its not working for me. My buddy doesn't see it on his Evo 4G wifi.
Just tested it out and it worked great. No 4G in my area until October so I was running You Tube, which blocked here at work, over the tether and it it was really smooth. The app was painless to use, no configuration at all just started it and gave it SU access and off I went. My laptop connected right up.
Nice app/find.

FYI-> I went to tether today and the 4G built-in app expired so i tried my restored wifi tether from my dInc.
it worked.
4g and 3g tested, both working.
not sure why this app didnt work before...

I believe the reason most phones can't see it is because it creates a Wifi hotspot in Ad-hoc mode and not Infrastructure mode like most Wifi routers do. Android phones cannot connect to an Ad-hoc network, at least I haven't found one that does.
If you connect to this network from a computer you'll usually also see it listed with Ad-hoc mentioned or a different icon of some sort.
I have noticed that Apple's products can connect to an Ad-hoc network. I'm not sure why this limitation exists on Android handsets, it's quite annoying.
Most of the "official" carrier Wifi hotspot's do support Infrastructure mode, so that's why you can connect when using one of those hotspot app's.

It is because in Ad-Hoc mode there is no server assigning it an IP Address like you get with the infrastructure mode found in routers and other devices. You have to make sure that all the devices are configure with matching IP addresses (addresses in the same subnet and class), gateways, and subnets. Ad-hoc is generally a manually configured network where you configure each device. It is what we used to call peer to peer in the old days.
The app listed in this thread works great. Just to check ppl are turning on the wireless radio first? I know its a simple thing but you would be surprised how many times ppl forget that step.
I've been fighting with this app since I got it. I know the problem is with my laptop, but when I had the Inc. i could connect with no problems at all. I see the signal from the phone in my wireless list, just as an adhoc connection. I just can't get my computer to ever connect to it.
I know the error lies somewhere between the keyboard and chair, but if anyone has any ideas on what I should try, plz let me know.
Running. Win7 Ultimate 64bit
Thanks all!
it works!
The first WiFi device I tried to connect was my wife's phone (Samsung Captivate) but her phone would not find WiFi Tether signal.
But my rooted Nook Color did and it works fine.

Interestingly enough, I was able to use this quite well on my Nook Color running CM7 when they had 4g turned on in my area (for one day). After they switched it back off, I have been able to connect, but the data doesn't seem to go.
I don't get the correlation, because I was even able to tether it at work where I only had 3g, but the second they turned 4g off, it wouldn't tether from 3g. Frustrating.
I just want to note I am using it on a 3G connection. They have not activated 4G in my area.
I figured out what was wrong. The problem was that I was authorizing my nook exclusively, and while this works, it doesn't appear to be a permanent solution. You have to redo it occasionally when you reconnect.

having issues with this app, laptop connects and some sites work, speak easy speed test reports very nice speeds, but for whatever reason several sites will only partial load and then timeout. Forum based websites work fine and it seems youtube works also. Not sure why others won't.
I am trying to connect my laptop running Windows Vista Home to my LG revo. I can see the AndroidTether ssid and it is ad hoc. But when trying to connect it just sits there trying then has a message that "connection is taking longer than usual" then it gives a timeout. I can get a connection with my desktop running Vista Ultimate. Anybody know what setting in my Windows laptop that may have to be changed? I setup my wireless adhoc device props to match the LG revo settings. I found a new driver for the wireless network card and it connected just fine...DOH!
Just to mention for some people
If you still can't connect try checking if u made a static ip for your network adapter....just putting this out there

OK. So we need a static IP address? And for the other poster.. how did you match the settings to the Revolution? I have been fighting this wireless tether since I rooted. All help and comment are awesome! Thanks guys.

I tried to find an answer from google and xda but couldnt find exactly what I was looking for.
I have moved my Xbox360 into the back room of my house where there is a 60inch tv to connect to but the wifi doesnt reach there. I am trying to put my phone outside that room (where the wifi can be used) and create a hotspot using the wifi connection and not the 3g. The problem is, all the apps only have tethering using 3g connection, not wifi.
Is it possible to tether using wifi connection instead of 3g and is there is an app?
Thanks
Dont you have a cheap router that can be used as repeater? Dont think there is ap like that for Android (correct me if i am wrong)
I got a repeter with 22 euro router (dir-300b) flashed with DD-WRT and it works great.

That is exacly what I was going to write. I can add that there are many cheaper routers ( i.e. Edimax, TP-Link, Ovislink ...) then D-Link which can do repeating ( or extending ) without flashing anything.
example: http://www.tplink.com/en/article/?id=250
You want to using the phone for repeater? AFAIK, it can't. You should consider to buy router as posted above.
Hi,
Is there any sulotions for ICS to support ad hoc? I have searched alot and I need to connect my Note to my PC's internet. The problem is that my pc is to old to support connectify etc...
Reverse tethering app uses my data plan in order to appear the connection as 3G. And it uses cable. Not good enough.
Ad hoc would be best option.
Thank you

If you ever heard of an application for Nokia called JOIKU HOTSPOT you will be interested on this topic. I use joiku hotspot on my nokia phone to enable to connect to multiple devices at home. I don't have wired internet. Since this is an ahhoc wifi hotspot I am not updating to ICS unless a hack is available to enable wpa supplicant to "see" the joiku adhoc signal. On gingerbread I had to download and install a modified wpa supplicant file to connect to joiku .

I have used joiku on my nokia
exactly i still dont understand wat exact you want.
You saying reverse tethering have some issue - Now reverse tether application using your wired Internet of your PC for your android device
While Joiku spot is for sharing your device network to PC
So question is you want to share net from your device to PC
OR
want to share PC internet to device?
Edit :wat i understand now is
You dont have wifi router, but just you have created wireless netwok (virtual) and you want to share your device net to PC wirelessly
if yes
try this, it have ad hoc support if i remember correctly, since long i have not used it.

I don't know. It is strange. If i have no credits in my sim card, and I connect to internet via the app, it goes fine. But I can't see connection as 3G and some apps don't work due to this.
Then when I put credits to my sim card, the connection appears as 3G. And the data plan button turns green whenb checking in setings. If i turn of I lose coonection as 3G. Some times it doesn't use data plan, but often it does.
BTW, I never use data plan for anything it is always disabled, but the reverse tether app turns on.
No idea what is wrong.

I believe it only means a wireless network (WiFi or mobile data) is available but not connected. If you connect to either WiFi or your mobile data the eclimation should go off on the other because overall you are now connected to a wireless network.

Well you only asked what the symbol meant and I answered that. If you are having trouble connecting to wifi i suggest phrasing it that way. Im sorry i cannot help with that, however; as you have provided no information specific to your situation (this would be helpful so that knowledgeable people can help you). Sorry im not well versed in such problems
