Hi all
I need an app that will let me overlay gps data over a map. Now I have some GPX files which are easy converted to KMZ files and can be viewed using google maps but the problem I have is that I want to use these files in more remote areas where data connection is likely to be lost.
Is there any way to download google maps so I could still use these files just by using a GPS signal? If not is there an alternative way of using these GPS files?
Also does anyone know of any other tracking/fitness/cycling apps? I have MY TRACKS and CARDIO TRAINER.
Thanks in advance
Gary
I've been using endomondo for over a year now, in my opinion by far the best app for cycling
Sportypal. Its an app with differet tracking options including a cycling option.

Google maps will use your data connection to load the maps. Google Maps doesn't give voice directions. You can use another free program called amaze gps and it gives you voice directions. Although it will still use your data connection.
you could also try nav4all..
the GPS is free to use - however - depeinding upon what software you're using to view the maps - that can cost.
If you're using google maps or any other type of GPS software that downloads the maps "on the fly" via an internet connection - then it's using your dataplan to download the maps - which may or may not cost you depending upon what type of data plan you have. If you want ot avoid that issue then you need to get some other software like TomTom or Igo - those actually let you store the maps on your SD card, thus no internet connection required - you just use the GPS signal - which is always free.
Are there free apps that have maps on your phone? Would that decrease the memory usage if you are only using GPS as opposed to GPS & Data?

I'm just a wanna-be techie...but don't most users of PPC's have the unlimited data plans? I know hubby and I both have Touch Pros and it is $30 a month for unlimited data total for us.
PPC's are just way too much hardware for someone NOT using the data options. I rely far more on non-phone features.
lol, well yeah most people do. I just got laid off so why pay 120 a month when i can cut my bill almost in half. Im not driving everyday anymore so i dont need the data.
Try terracrosser, it will download google maps or yahoo maps at the zoom you specify then retreive them as you drive. The program is a bit clunky but it does work. And its free. Just a gps signal is needed.

I've never heard of one - map data is expensive to come by for providers, so they will generally either charge for the product (Garmin, Tom Tom, etc.) or will provide it on an as-requested basis with some sort of ad revenue (aMaze, and I think nav4all). Google is (for now) an exception to the can't-get-something-for-nothing rule, but you have to have a data plan to use them. If you can live with ads (and last time I used it, they didn't have any yet) aMazeGPS keeps advertising that they will allow caching of maps in an upcoming version so you could potentially download the maps you need for a trip while you're on your home network.
im using garmin mobile xt on my touch pro. the maps can be preinstalled to the phone so there is no charge when using gps.
Hi All,
I was searching for an app that will show the GPS position of my phone realtime in Google earth. I found Ipoki (www.ipoki.com). It's a great app for tracking phones in google earth and google maps in realtime.
However.. The app keeps crashing on my phone on random intervalls. Anyone of you using this app and do you experience the same problems?
Does anyone know a replacement for this app (just in case i can't solve the crashes). It is important that the location can me viewed in Google Earth. I tried latitude, but the update frequency isn't very reliable.
Thanks in advance.
Isn't this the same as Latitude from google maps??
---EDIT---
sorry didn't read good.
Currently there doesn't seem to be any easy reliable way to track an Android device via Google Earth (apart from Ipoki which seems to have trouble on the Hero). Presumably you mean using Google Earth on a PC and creating a network link to a kml file?
The only apps that come close are Instamapper and Glympse, which offer live tracking via a map on a webpage.
I used to use http://www.mgmaps.com/ on Symbian devices; you can configure a auto-updated kml file which sits on a server and you can point to from GE for live tracking. This works really well, but the app doesn't work on Android yet (though apparently it DOES work with the custom ROMs since they support Java). Keep an eye on this as I think it will work well with the new ROM, and I believe the developer is working on porting it to Android.
It looks promising and i am running the customrom from modaco. However can you point me in the right direction? I downloaden the generic app from the site and put it on my sd card. However, the javabox doesn't show the file, so i can't open it.
Check the forums on mgpaps.com, there are users there successfully running it on the Hero.
Hey guys, im going on a vacation soon, and i really dont wanna be charged with roaming, so google maps is out of the question. And i might be out of phone reception.
I want a good app with preloaded maps, preferably satt images, not just roads as i wont be driving, and preferably free
Any ideas

how about this app?
have a look here for general info on gps and here for some nav progs, maybe some of them can also do what you need
cheers
If you don't need routing, take a look at navi computer (it's freeware): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=581474 Comes with a normal windows program which allows to export maps. By default only open street maps, but if you change around the config file, you can also export google & bing sat/maps (google for 'MapSources.xml Google and Bing maps'). Plus a finger friendly windows mobile app which works pretty well and can use those exported maps without any net connection.
Hey,
I'm searching for a App, where I can use offline maps (OpenStreetMap) and make tracks. There are a lot of apps but as a example Outdoor Navigation is slow and buggy. Also I can't import the maps (*.nmap) from DropBox. I can download it within the app and this is very slow (7h for 100MB).
So it will be great, if I can import the maps through DropBox or SkyDrive and export the tracks to it.
I don't need more, but I can't find this app. Do you know one?
best regards,
neon

Have you try TrackMe By LEM it's in the marketpalce, maybe this is the one that's the one you're looking for.
You may also check outdoor navigator

Yes, this App can track my rout, but I can not import OpenStreetMaps through DropBox or SkyDrive. I think there is no map support at all.
@wbadry
Outdoor Navigator was my first choice. But it is very slow. I need 7h to download a 100MB file. Also if I download the map live, it takes very long. And if I compare it to Maps or gMpas, (g)Maps is much faster. So this isn't a problem of the OpenStreet/Bing/Google server.
But both Apps have a confusing navigation. TrackMe is very strange. Only icons without text and the layout is from WM6.5 and not WP7 :-/
@neon
I think we need to use google earth to see it.
To see what?
I was wondering if there is an offline gps software available for the htc one. By offline I mean a software that does not need any data connection/wifi what so ever to function. Just utilizing the gps built into the one. This will be mainly used for walking and locating places but it would be helpful if there are driving directions as well. What do you guys use?
yes, its called Google Maps

Copilot, Sygic, I use Garmin
I use, (ordered by preference):
1. Sygic
2. NDrive
3. Tomtom
4. Navigon
5. Copilot
There are a few navigation apps that can be used off line. They are very large in size but will do what you need.

I think you can now download your route from Google maps now and use with navigation and offline
