Hey, I used the search button already, but couldn't find any answers, so I'm creating this thread.
Has anyone here used Google Voice Search to "Text xxx example message" yet?
I tried a few times but it never lets me select handcent as the default app to send the text with. Does anyone know how to get that done?

If i'm correct, it sends the text using the Google Voice Search app, then the message gets displayed in your stock messaging app...or since you use handcent, it will also appear on there too.
Yeah, it "sends" with the voice search app, but when I press send, it asks to use
a. Google Voice
b. Messaging
No handcent option. Have tried re-installing handcent, to no avail.
Just select stock. Basically, you're choosing which service to send the message by--your carrier or GV. If you select stock, it is sent through your carrier, which would also appear in handcent.
Yeah I'm doing that right now. It's just annoying that I can't do it with Handcent.

It doesn't matter what app you're using instead of the stock messaging app, they ALL get sent from your device and the message will appear in ANY messaging app that you use. So in a way, you ARE using handcent even though you're selecting the stock messaging app.

Hey guys,
I just recently got my HTC hero and I have a question about the messaging app. First of all, I am currently using Handcent mainly because if you use the stock app, texts always show up on the lock screen even if you are using the pattern lock. That is annoying, and I don't understand what the point of the pattern lock is if you can just see my texts without having to even unlock my phone...anyway, so I am using handcent and it's fine. I've made sure to remove notifications on the stock app so that I don't get double notifications, but my question is: is there a way to delete the stock app? I mean is the phone going to slow down since it is getting texts from 2 apps, does that make sense? Even though the notifications are disabled for the stock app, the texts still go there and they are also going to handcent...So basically i would like to know if:
1. i can delete the stock app (i have rooted my phone so...)
2. does it matter that the phone is pulling texts to two different apps
3. is there a way to make my texts not go to my lock screen, if so i would just not use handcent
Finally, on handcent, i will oftentimes get a text twice from people. does anyone have this problem?
Ok tahnks!
1. Don't delete the stock messaging app.
2. From what I've read on these forums, Handcent basically gets texts from the stock messaging app to get texts. Your phone isn't really doing twice the amount of work.
3. Hmm, I use handcent, and I disabled notifications on the stock app, and I don't see any texts from the stock app on my lock screen.
I also get texts twice once in a while. I think it has something to do with scrolling down the conversation window while the text is being received... not sure, but that's what I noticed.

Look at handcent as a theme for ur stock text app.
Deleting stock would make text not work.
No way to turn that off in stock text for the lockscreen
Dbl text is the carrier at times. It happens. No way to stop it.
My experience is different, I deleted the stock app (mms.apk) and my text work just fine. As long you as you remembered to turn on auto retrieve in your handcent's setting under "Receive message settings". It has been working for me without any issue.
Handcent and Google Voice don't play well with one another. Handcent won't display my Google Voice number despite what the Google Voice settings say. It also behaves... oddly for me. I really wish it would work the way I want it to, though. Hot damn, is it pretty. I love the interface and the customization options. I just hate the fact that it won't play nice with Google Voice. So... ugly texting through my preferred number, it is!
Have you tried chomp sms? Similar look, not as customizable, but may play better with gv

I have tried Chomp. But, as far as I can tell, when not sending from the Google Voice application, it tells people that it came from my cell number, not my Google Voice number. The whole point of Google Voice, at least for me, is to have one number forever, not switch between them.
so i downloaded "Handcent" text messaging and it works fine... other then getting double notification i had a question:::::
since i get double notification it obviously means the Stock SMS still gets text messages from people i send messages to from handcent... do i get charged towards my texting plan on the stock sms? or not?.... if i am, would a solution be to rename the stock sms file with .old in the end of it so its gone? will i still get charged towards my plan?
Handcent uses the same SMS system app so there's no extra charge for texting via it.
To solve the double notification, just go open the default messaging app, hit menu -> settings -> uncheck Notifications.
Now you should only get notifications via Handcent.

Technically, yes. The stock sms program still gets the texts. But all it really is doing is accessing the same system SMS program as Handcent.
They're both just front ends for interacting with the SMS program.
You don't get charged "extra" for using Handcent versus the stock messaging app.
I've been using Handcent from day one and there's no extra charge and all my messages show up in both apps. I just never open the stock app.
Handcent doesn't bypass SMS charges by using data. It's just another app that does what the stock SMS app does, just a bit more prettily.
For free SMS you need Google Voice. But note you have to use the Google Voice phone number as inbound/outbound. Also, there's no api for sending messages through Google Voice so you can't use any frontend app besides Voice itself.

Ahhh, I see now. Yes, any texting from your phone's number is charged to your texting plan.
To use SMS through Google Voice, just give people your GV number and have them use that to text you. It will not be charged to your plan text bucket.
First install the GV app if you haven't...
Then, as the previous guy said, just have people text the GV number. For outbound texts you can either fire up the GV app and select "Compose" from the menu/respond to a text someone's already sent your GV, or go to Contacts and use "Send Message" for a contact (the first time you do this the app choice menu should pop up -- you can set GV as the default for future uses).
Make sure Google Voice isn't set to forward the text messages from your Google Voice number to your cell phone number or you will be charged for the text sent from Google Voice to your Cell number.

I'm using google voice for voicemail, but noticed that my buddy that also has a captivate can use his for texting. He's running stock 2.1, and I'm running di11i's v5.6 Stripped (an i9000 ROM). Where his has a compose button to text with, mine has a refresh. Any ideas why? Yes, I'm in the United States and have full Google Voice access.
Have you tried updating it in the market? I'm running a jpy rom and my compose button is to the left of the refresh.
Just uninstalled and reinstalled to make sure, I'm at the newest.

you might have selected your messaging app as your default after installing voice. Normally after you've installed google voice, your first txt message you try to send out via your contacts list. A pop up will appear asking you to choose an app to complete the action. it asks you to choose google voice or messaging, and an option to set whatever app is going to be the default. To get back that option you need to reset the defaults in your messaging app and not the google voice app.
The settings can be found under.
Settings -> applications -> manage applications -> messaging
pick clear defaults then try to send a txt message from your contacts list and you should see the pop up asking which app you want to use to send your txt.
using gv for texting works great, just make sure whoever you are texting has your gv number attatched to your contact because it sends the text from your gv number.
When I started using gv I sent all my most frequent texters my gv number and told them to use that number for me.
This allowed me to drop my text from unlimited to the 200 pack and saved me 10$ a month.

i hope you realize the difference between:
Google voice (for converting messages) and Voice Search by Google (for searching and inputting text into messages by voice like your buddy)
2 different things. and also not to be confused with android voice dialer. which works better as a dialer than google voice search (Which it is supposed to do also but doesnt work properly)
heres the offical youtube vid for what you want.

I'm pretty sure he's talking about Google Voice, the American app & service that us Canadian's don't get to use.
Trusselo, it let's you forward your phone to your GV account and use the Google Vmail service. It opens up a world of options compared to a carrier's vmail services. I have a GV account from when I was working down south this past summer, but you can't add a Canadian number to your account. So, until Google opens up that restriction I can't use my GV account anymore.
GV also let's you, if you choose, have 1 number which rings at any destination(s) you choose. Such as cell, house, work etc and then end up back in your GV vmail. I wish Google would open up the service to Canadians, especially since it was started by Canadians at Grand Central (Calgary company), then bought out by Google and shut down.

I read it as he wants to TEXT from his GOOGLE VOICE account, with the GV app. "that my buddy that also has a captivate can use his for texting". This is a feature of the GV app, if you select it in your GV account.
Ok that is quite possible then, either way, i dont have google voice.
I text by talking.
I use Voice Search by google to do what he wants and cant find.

I just tried that, and there were no defaults set for the messaging app.
Even on my google Voice web app, there is only a call button. Not a Text button.
I have both a refresh button and a compose button.
Dunno why you don't have both buttons.

I just got a new HTC One a couple of weeks ago, after a HTC Desire.
I rooted it, and installed Cyanogenmod 10.2.
After I installed Google Voice, the stock messaging app does not send text messages any longer. It just says, "message not sent". So I'm having to use Voice for texting, which is not always what I want to do.
I know it's somewhere in the settings, but I do not see any way to get to the settings for Google Voice on my phone.
Suggestions?

How do you use the "menu button" for other apps? haha
Two quick solutions I can think of off the top of my mind. (1) uninstall the GV app and see if it works. (2) Go to GV site and click the settings icon in the top right and play around with the settings. It may be the "Receive text messages on this phone" option you have to tick.
When you text from GV, does it send using your google voice number or your phone number?

That's actually a good question. In most of the apps, there is a 3 dot button you can press to get into the settings... but NOT for Google Voice.

Checking or unchecking the "receive text messages" box in GV settings doesn't seem to make any difference.
But when I uninstall GV, the regular messaging app works. When GV is installed, it doesn't.

Has anyone been able to figure out how to read the GOSms text on their gear? I get the notification from GOSms on my gear, I select the GOSms notification on the gear, but it only shows "New Message" instead of the actual message itself.
I've had to re-enable the stock app, so now I get two notifications on my watch, but end up having to select the stock texting app to be able to actually read the text on my watch.
I have GOSms selected in Gear Manager to send GOSms notifcations to my gear. Is there anything else within the GOSms settings I'm missing?

I don't know why you are having issues....
I have been using Gosms since day one and works fine in my gear.
Only downside is that you can not fast reply with the pre-configured texts through it.
You have to be using the stock messaging app which I find annoying. I wish there was a way to reply back.
But other than that it works fine. Nothing to do , just select it as an app from gear manager.
Are you running 4.3 on your phone ?
If not then that would be why. Before I upgraded to 4.3, it was not working either. Just what you described.
Anyone know if I root can I reply using Gosms? I asked in the Null rom thread and a Mod deleted my question and said to stay on topic...

No dice... It still only says "New Message".
Since I can't use the "canned message responses" from the Gear with GOSms anyways, I've just disabled sending GOSms alerts to my gear. I like being able to respond to the text message from my gear, and don't want to lose that functionality.
Now I have my phone send just regular text messages to the gear, and use GOSms on the phone as the default text messaging client.

I was having hit & miss on the default sms app, so tried Go Sms - but I'm not getting anything on my watch from it. I'm on latest watch firmware & latest manager. Go Sms is selected manually in 'more notifications'.
I don't use a lock screen, but I tried turning it on to no avail. I also thought the Go Sms popup might cause the problem, but I turned it off - no help either.
Anyone know a SMS app that will get the pages to the watch 100% of the time with no delay ?

weird - i am getting the notification and i can read the message. i am using the stock UK ROM. only issue is when you receive a 2nd text from the same person. if you haven't opened it on the phone, the 2nd message will say "2 unread messages". the watch doesn't talk to the app to show that you read the message.
