[Q] USB tethering and Windows 7 - Nexus One Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Before someone says anything, yes drivers are installed and everything is working on the driver end of things but the problem comes when I plug in my phone and enable the USB tether the network and sharing center in Windows 7 just comes to a complete crawl, also it shows that i have a connection to the internet but i get packet loss.
Anyone else come across this, and any ideas?

Could be that its W7 X64? The drivers are installed and working correctly, what version of W7 you running?

I am also running cm6 final version. Internet works fine about five minute but my phone rebooted. I am wondering if we have similar problems. My wireless mode works fine. However with wifi I seems to run up the temperature of the way up. I worry if my phone can the heat it produce. It constantly stay up at 100 degrees. I need to fix the tethering some how.

Wireless Tether Help (heh)

I'm going to be eaten alive for asking for help, but I can't get wireless tether up and running.
I bit the bullet and rooted today, installing CyanMod (v5.0.6-test) in the process. Downloaded and installed wireless_tether_2_0-pre10.apk (code . google . com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list) and the app runs fine but my laptop couldn't connect. So I decided to look for a new kernel. I searched and installed intersectRaven's AVS_xtra Kernel (forum . xda-developers . com/showthread.php?t=653598&highlight=wireless+tether+kernal) but still nothing.
I'm obviously inexperienced. Any help would be honestly appreciated.
(Spaced out the links. Felt like posting my sources was worth disobeying the no link rule. :/)
Did you try this kernel update?
hxxp://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/wiki/NexusOneKernelUpdate
I use the desire rom and the built in app they have in the ROM is great, all i do is open the app on my phone and search for networks on my computer and im connected.

thanks

It has always worked great for me, never had any problems.
i noticed that in my WIN XP laptop it didn't recognize the wifi network
but in WIN 7 all works fine.. (but it shows a different icon in the wifi select screen)
It's the exact opposite here. Win7 (64bit) refuses to connect but Vista connected just fine. But at least the application works. :] I installed the kernel from googlecode. Didn't check to see if it worked on another machine beforehand, but it works on everyone's but my laptop now.
I really like CM and have no complaints. :/ Does anyone know why my laptop cant connect? (USB tether isnt much of a bother, but compatibility issues in the future may be)

wired tether issue

I have an old laptop that doesnt have wifi. Got my phone drivers installed. But everytime i try to turn on tethering, i get a popup saying new hardware ,and that it needs drivers.
I dont have adb setup, as it wont work for some reason.
Guess i should speculate what im trying to do. Tether my laptop to my wifi router. Any ideas or pointers would be great.
laptop is a hp running win xp sp2, its a fresh install, so i could update if it might help, but cant do sp3.
Or would a linux system work easier?
Figured it out. XP sucks and doesnt have the RNDIS crap.
Nevermind. got no connection because the network did not assign a network address to the computer.
Im lost now.
Figured out that my problem was Windows SP2.....Go figure.
So I installed ubuntu 9.10. Didnt help anthing. still am not able to connect. Any info would be great, I've read around through all the threads, and am really starting to get confused, as it says everywhere that it should just be plug and play.

SP2 will not work. I've tried for hours but as soon as I installed SP3 on my work WinXP machine it worked flawlessly.
Why can't you install SP3?

I don't use ucraptu -- it is perpetually borked.
Fedora will work -- just about any version since networkmanager went default. I think that was about version 7 or 8, both of which are already obsolete.
Just turn the thing on, plug in the phone, don't forget to ENABLE WIRED TETHERING, and you're done.

Because my Hp laptop doesnt like it, get blue screens too much. I have tried numerous times, From updating to it, and a fresh install of it.
Its just an old laptop, and its HP. Has 1.2 ghz, and 512 RAM, if that makes my point. lol

Em... yep. That's what I mean.
And do yourself a favor: Start with a livecd. It downloads small and is easy to test without jumping through too many hoops.
Appreciate the help. Fedora looks great, and I have nothing to lose. There online d/l sucks, had to find at the bay.
Stupid ubuntu. got a kernal error before the cd could even boot. Gonna be pissed if Im stuck with ubuntu.

well thanks for the pointless addition. Im just trying to find an OS that will work with wired tether, Ubuntu was supposedly plug and play... it wasnt. and now I get kernal errors when trying to load new OS.
Figured out that it had nothing to do with my OS, it was the ROM I was running. Tether works great now.

Froyo USB Tethering not working?

I followed the directions here:
google *com/support/android/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=182134
but could not get the drivers to properly install. Has anyone else tried and was able to get it to work? Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the drivers working?
For me the drivers are giving me cannot finish installing error.
Edit: I'm using Windows XP by the way. So any other XP people having trouble?
Mine worked fine just slow as hell.

All you do is plug in via USB, go to settings > wireless... > Tethering... >Check USB Tethering... That's it that's all.
And mines is hittin' at 4+ Mbps...not slow at all.

Did you get add new hardware option? When I try to install new hardware it says device cannot start (code 10).
Works fine here (Windows 7). I just got 5.03 MB's which is insane

No, no new option. I just plugged it up. One thing tho, I have updated my SDK when the 2.2 SDK came out, but I wasn't asked to update my USB driver, so that's probably irrelevant. It worked just like before the update.

<<---Tethering...
Does anyone know any hacks to get it working on Mac OS X?
USB tethering and wifi hotspot both working flawlessly with a netbook using Windows XP home here.
Maybe the OP error was trying to install the tethering driver for the mass storage device, or the adb device that pops up when connecting the Nexus One if you have "USB debugging" on. I suggest connecting the phone to usb, ignoring any popups that appear asking for drivers (if any) and then active USB tethering on the phone, a new device asking for a driver should pop up. The driver goes there.
Hotspot and Tethering worked fine for me testing with a Windows 7 netbook.
Mine working perfectly with windows 7

T-Mobile isnt going to charge us for internet now because this new tethering is built into the OS? Im sure T-Mobile/ATT sent a WTF letter to google about enabling tethering without their permission

I've been wondering (and asking) the same thing. I wouldn't put it past them.

[Q] Tethering via Bluetooth Dial-up Networking (DUN)

Is there any way to tether an android device to your laptop via Bluetooth DUN? Basically what I'm trying to do is to initiate a internet connection (over 3G) from my laptop, WITHOUT having to take my phone out of my pocket.
I used to be able to do this ages ago when I had a Symbian device, and it was convenient. What I have to do now, is take the phone out of my pocket, start the "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" service on my phone, and then put it back in my pocket.
Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks. I just tried it. It seems to do most of the job. However, you still have to start the service within the app on the phone (for example after a reboot). Would love to have something that runs on its own, without any user input at all once it is installed.
As well, does anyone know what the battery use is if I leave it running all the time?

I used it on my G1 running donut and it didnt seem to make any change on battery life, but my battery life was horrible to begin with,so it could have some impact and I just didnt notice. My g1 lasts about 4 hours on a full charge, thats just sitting there,it dies after about 45min of talking.

[Q] Grayed out USB Tethering setting?

I have the GT-7000 and I am to understand that both mobile hotspot and usb tethering come as default features. ive seen a simple guide on how to get it working and it basiscally states the obvious: Check it on. The wireless hotspot is no problem, its working, but the usb hotspot option is forever grayed out and I cannot turn it on. Tried every stupid simple thing but it never becomes selectable. I downloaded and installed pdanet and that works fine but i want to know why the native setting isnt functional so I can just hot swap between computers without having to go through that install process on each computer wherever I may be. Anyone?
EDIT: For some odd reason the next time I tried on another day the option became select-able. I still dont know the reason it stayed grayed out before but at least its working now. So yay =)
