Question for Google Voice users

I hope this is acceptable. I've been searching Android market and a couple of different forums including this one. I really miss a feature of my old cell phone and wondered if the upcoming google voice will finally provide it.
My motoming A1200 had a custom firmware with an excellent voice response system. When paired with a BT kit or headset or A2DP set, the VR would fire up anytime the BT off-hook (sometimes called the function button, call button, whatever...the main button on a BT device) button was pressed.
With a car kit, the end effect is very useful, especially when you have BT buttons integrated into your steering wheel.
So, when I got my G1 last year, I lost that and miss it very much. I've thought that all we really need is for google to hitch up the goog-411 voice response facility to our google contacts database whether it runs online or in the device or with an optimized combination of both.
Does google voice do this? I've read that it accepts voice commands and searches your contacts. Has anyone with google voice been successfully calling out from a BT kit by voice-searching their contacts? If so, can you put in a good word for me so I can get a GV account ASAP?

GV is currently accepting signups for a waiting list. I've been told they'll be rolling out a bunch over the next few weeks. I'm guessing there will be another beta testing round and they're wanting to stress the system harder. Have you added your name to the list yet?
I just tried triggering voice dial with my motorola ht850s and came up with nothing. Also tried to start voice search manually by long-pressing the call button but wasn't able to prompt a search via the headset either.
The current GV app for Android isn't made by Google and doesn't seem to integrate this feature at this time. Lets hope an official GV app hits us soon. I expect it will take advantage of this feature and more.

Automatically forward text messages?

I have a Nexus One with Tmobile as my main cell-phone. I received a Sprint HTC EVO 4G from the Google IO conference. I want all of the text messages I receive on my Nexus One to AUTOMATICALLY forward, as text messages, to my Sprint EVO smartphone. Is this possible? If so, how do I set this up?

Another way you can go about it is forward the sms as email and set the program to not mark as read.
Edit: This is referring to a 3rd party program from the market. There are a few, try some and see what you think.

This is a good time to mention Google Voice, for anyone who might be unaware of it's powerful awesomeness. As of a few months ago, I've fully switched over and I am loving it. If you're going to have two phone numbers for a while (or even if not), you would be a prime candidate for Google Voice.

I already have google voice. Everyone with a Nexus One has Google voice. I do not want to make people switch to my new google voice number, and Google voice has nothing to do with what I want to accomplish anyhow. The point of the thread is how to make an android phone automatically forward text messages, AS TEXT MESSAGES, to another phone. Do you know how to do that? If so, please share it with us.

If you did forward them as text messages, they would just come back as sent from your phone. The solution I gave works better because they will apear as SMS From:xxxx.

Update...
A friendly fellow on another android message board system tipped me off to SMS Forwarder in the android marketplace. I installed it on my Froyo Nexus One, and it works like a charm.
However, I hope there is a way to do this internally in android, instead of requiring a third-party application.

The SMS Forwarder application shows where the forwarded text message originally came from.

I was saying it might be beneficial to consider using GV for texting in the future. If it's such a huge deal to switch for you, then fine forget it. But it's still information for others who might be reading, which is why I specifically said "for anyone" / "everyone". This is a public forum after all.
and Google voice has nothing to do with what I want to accomplish anyhow.

Google Voice allows you forward text messages to two (or any number) of phones.

No there isn't.

The absolute best way to get SMS forwarding is through your carrier. But that'll depend on whether your carrier cares enough to add such a feature. Rogers in Canada just added it.

- It's a public forum, but my initial question was very specific. You nearly de-railed the thread.
- I did a quick search, in fact I did an extensive search on these boards and on the net. I couldnt find any answers so I posted here.
- My very specific question asked how to automatically forward a text message from my Nexus One phone to my Sprint EVO phone. Forwarding from a google voice number to other phones was never the right answer, and you know it. Why people insist on inserting themselves into internet message board questions, when they know they don't actually have the correct answer, is beyond me.

A VERY quick search on the market brought up some results you were looking for.
And people usually insert themselves even if it's not the exact answer the OP might have been looking for because the OP might not know about the idea, and decide that fulfills his/her needs for the situation. Why people insist on giving douche responses on internet messaging boards when people are merely trying to help them is beyond me.

App Requires Phone Number work around

I tried to install the verizon fios dvr manager/remote control - the application however requires a cell phone number - does any one know a work around to create a "fake number" on the nook to use these apps?

I would also like to get something like this working for Google Voice so that I can use the messaging service.
Any and all help is appreciated.

I signed into my google account and google voice "just worked". Of course i can't make any calls but i can use it to send texts and receive texts sent to my gv number.

I think if you could lift the data/configuration from your existing phone then you could copy that to the Nook and be working. I could not find where the data was stored though for the app.

I just entered my iPhone's number (which is already registered to Google Voice and has the Google Voice app on it) and I can use it for texting just fine.

Can you give a short tutorial on how to get this set up? I too (and im sure others) would like to be able to text from the Nook.

Setup gvoice on a phone first (you should able to find a tutorial by searching google). Then use the same # when setting up on the nook.

Edit: Okay, set up Google voice and I'm able to send texts using that number however the apps that require a phone number do not see it. Not a huge deal, but there might be more apps out there that require a phone number to work.
I simply set up Google voice via the Google.com/voice website. And then got a Google number to use for texts. In the voice app you can compose a message and my Google contacts are available.

I agree this thread was hijacked. We want a workaround for the Android verizon manager on the kindle fire or nook color where the app was meant for a mobile phone. Would there be a way to give a rooted device a phone number?

Depending on the ROM your running, you may be able to enter a phone number in the settings.... otherwise you may be able to edit TelephonyManager.smali and find the section to pull the phone number and hard code a phone number in the same way we do IMEI edits.

I got the FIOS app to run on my Nook by doing the reverse of this. I found the few places in the app where the phone number was looked up and replaced those by calls to get an apps prefs setting "Display Name" which is entered during set up but unused by the app. So I put in the phone number under Display Name during set up.
This was done using apktool to patch the app but I am reluctant to post the modified version as this is explicitly ruled out by license agreement.
I did consider going the TelephonyManager route but as I am using CM9 which is still changing quite a bit then that becomes a moving target. If CM9 puts explicit coded support in for entering a number like CM7 did then that would be the best option. I did find, however, when using the CM7 option that it had a tendency to lose the entered number during reboots.

You can set a phone number, IMEI, location and many other things for each individual app with PDroid without modifying any code on those apps.
All you need is to enable the PDroid framework. There are packages in Botbrew for Nook or you can use the auto-patcher if you have Linux.
The above links are for CM9. If you have cm7 there are auto-patchers for Linux and windows, which can be found at the PDroid thread.

That looks like a better more general method. In checking this out I also notice that Verizon did do an update a couple of weeks ago where the FIOS remote app claims it has a new pairing method which works with non-phone tablets so maybe this isn't needed any more for this particular app. I'll try that out.

It is a pretty neat program, with a ton of functions and uses that go pretty unnoticed.
One note, though: due to an update in the CM repo, our auto-patcher ( and even the patches I used to make the auto-patcher) broke.
I have updated everything for CM9, but we are waiting on an aokp build before releasing another version of the auto-patcher.
But the Botbrew packages are up to date and can be used immediately for 5/08 and the patcher will be updated soon.
If you are running an older build, make sure the package you use matches the build date. And the auto-patcher still works to builds from 5/06 and earlier.

I tried out the new version of the Verizon app and it now does allow use of a 4 digit PIN as opposed to a phone number for setting up the remote control pairing. It finds the set top box OK but then immediately crashes on the Nook Color CM9.
I'm going to do a bit more investigation and maybe try it from a Touchpad to see if that behaves the same way.

Thanks for your message, I'm actually one of the guys behind Voxtrot. You may have forgotten to say that we do provide free calling, but only if both persons are registered on the network.
Voxtrot was successfully tested on the Nexus S sporting Gingerbread, but never on a customized HD2, hence possibly the force quit issue.
Anyway I'm happily gathering feedback so if you have some, don't hesitate.

I'm sorry if this has already been debated elsewhere. I did search and try to locate threads on this already, but didn't come up with anything which (seemed) relevant to this problem.
If anyone has a link handy for another thread which already discusses this, I'll close the thread if that is wanted.
With that said... Here's my issue.
As stated elsewhere, one of the main things which excited me about Gingerbread was the ability to do native SIP dialing. About time, I say! Now I've flashed Gingerbread on my SGS and so far the results has been below underwhelming.
From what I can tell this is how you get SIP/VoIP/Internet calling on your phone using Gingerbread:
1. Sign up for Google Voice.
2. Install Google Voice and sign in.
3. Voila. Your Gingerbread Android-device now has a bunch of SIP settings and options.
This is ofcourse, unless your manufacturer has somehow crippled your phone's software.
That might be the case with Samsung's firmware, but I wouldn't know because the steps outlined above is absolutely impossible for anyone outside the US. You cannot sign up for Google Voice anywhere else. End of story.
So. Is this for real? Did Google release a smartphone OS for worldwide consumption, touting "native SIP", native internet calling as feature and then implement it in a way which means it will only work in one country, all else be damned?
I seriously find this very hard to believe. There has to be a way to get this functionality up and running otherwise. Seriously? The internet maestros at Google implements a core OS-level function tied to (one) geo-location? Is third-party solutions ala Sipdroid the solution for everyone else?
So... Please tell me I am completely mistaken and that there are steps for getting SIP running on my phone, despite me not have an adress of residency ending in "US".
Any hints or links in any direction so that I can actually get to try this out would be über appreciated.

Use this zip as an update from CWM recovery, enables the menu "Internet call settings" under "Call settings".
Works on odex and deodex ROMS [I have the same JVB as the OP]

Since I already have some framework-res.apk dependent mods, I just pushed the permissions-file as mentioned in that thread, and now I have "Internet calling options" available.
Yes, I realize this will only work while on wifi and SIP over 3G will be disabled, but at least it gives me something to experiment with so that later I will know if handing over my other mods for 3G VoIP/SIP will be worth it.
