Hello Legend users. I'm posting here on behalf of a friend who has had his Legend for about a month. He has been having connection issues. Most specifically his 3g drops all the time, or rather it switches from 3g to H in the status bar whenever he opens his browser. Ive tried adjusting his apn settings (Bell Mobility) which didnt work. I searched on the web and found some info referring to connection problems with early build numbers. Given that we are in Canada it wouldnt surprise me if he was on the earliest build number out there. His current is 2.02.666.3 (CL177708). And i guess the question i have for all of you is whether anyone else here has had similar issues?
Any help is appreciated

It says 3g and shows H when downloading.
3g is just the name of the network type. H stands for HDSPA and is the "speed".
So its normal to show H when on 3g. If it shows E (edge) or G (gprs) then it means 2g speeds, that is G is extremely slow en E is a bit faster but H is 7.2mbps (depending on network, might just be 3.6 if you dont have turbo 3g).
i don't think legend has 3g issues. i've been using legend from the build # 1.31, 1.32, 2.03,2.05, and 2.06. never really had an issue with 3g(i live in Korea and using KT). But i do have problem with wifi connection. it does connect to my wifi router and indicate that it is connected, but i always loose connection. i have another 4g hotspot router that is secure connection with password, that one connects find but still sometimes drops connection. don't know if this is related to the problems of aluminum case issues....but still......wifi connection is not acceptable.
K i feel stupid. Guess i should have read his manual over. Cant guess why his web pages wont load then? Super slow and then times out..... consistently. Ill play with it some more tonight.

I found sthg really weird in my unlocked ATT tilt today. I m curently using T-mobile. As many of you know that, you rarely get signal/reception in basement if you are using t-mobile. but today, when i went down to the basement, reception was gone w/ the E icon, then after a while, the E icon was changed to G, then the signal was detected and I could make phone call too. and the carrier on the screen is still T-mobile. Nothing changed except the E/G Icon. I then checked w/ my friend who is also using T-mobile(nokia phone), no reception at all. Does any one know what the difference between E and G icon on top of the screen is? will I be charged for some type of service fee or something if I make calls or use the Tmobile web w/ the [G] icon? please tell me if you guys know anything about it.
thanks in advance...
The "E" is picking up an edge reception, i get it in the UK sometimes because i have a crappy t-mobile signal in my house. When its displayed i cant make phonecalls/txts etc so might be picking up another carriers signal because i dont think t-mob uses edge here. The "G" is gprs just the basic slow phones signal.
G is when GPRS is available, E is when EDGE is available. No extra charge. This could have been easily answered by looking in the manual.......page 29
I guess this may be different for T-Mobile (and could possibly vary on the ROM you're using) but the E on my device is for EDGE service, and G is for 3G service. 3G, obviously, is the better of the two. But I'm on AT&T of course...

I don't think T-mobile has 3G here in NY.
Thanks for all the replies above
so, the signal of GPRS is stronger than the EDGE? if yes, then we are all able to get reception even if in basement. No need to get verizon anymore... lol
but why can't my friends' phones picked up any GPRS signal? is that because their phones don't support GPRS?

And then H (HSDPA) just defeats them all.
One Icon to rule them all, One Icon to find them...

No no no, g is not 3g, G is GPRS, the slower version of EDGE, thats the reason why you can call in your basement now!
G is GPRS
E is EDGE
3G is UMTS
H is HPSDA
first is the slowest, last is the fastest, so if the fastest is not availible, it switches to a slower one, like happened in the TS situation
My icon used to pretty much always be on 3G, sometimes switching to E when I drove to my brothers house which is about 25 miles away. But recently I haven't been seeing 3G at all, but only H. I did see E a couple days ago, but I haven't seen 3G in more than a week now. I thought H was only supposed to show up when you were using a data network or something? At least that's what I read somewhere on here a while ago... Any explanations?
that H is wat you want to see
first H shows up when downloading data means you're using HSDPA, but is H shows up when u're not downloading data, you have HSUPA too
Ya, as XtreMe_G indicated this is easily answered by opening up the manual.

Yeah, I know HSDPA is what I want to see the most, but when the hell did AT&T have HSUPA? I live in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia Metro area... Anyone else from the area noticing this?
And as for the OP's question about E and G, there is no difference between signal strength and ability to make voice calls. E just means that the cell offers Enhanced G.
Whether you see a G or and E (or 3g or H) is dictated by the data connection offered by the cell - which has no baring on voice at all.
If you have any signal, you should be able to make voice calls - the speed of the data connection (ie for web/email etc) is the only thing indicated by the Letter - except that 3g/H can also do simultaneous voice and data where G (and E) can't.

That's what I thought, but then I tested my data connection speeds and when I'm supposedly on basic GPRS the speeds are much greater than anything either GPRS or EDGE could accomplish (unless EDGE was having a perfect day).
I did notice however that it only shows G instead of 3G when I force the phone NOT to use 3G while 3G is available in the area. If I allow it to use 3G service it shows up as "3G" and the speeds remain the same. As soon as I force it not to use "3G" it shows up as just "G" but the speeds stay the same.
"E" or EDGE always seems to be indicative of the correct speed. But for my device it switching between G & 3G are one in the same, and the speed doesn't change at all.
Could just be a glitch with the software on my phone, but that's how it is for me.

Thanks for that.
That will be the reason that when I used a tomtom one and got traffic via my bluetooth phone, a traffic update would kill any call I was making.
I assume I am correct in also expecting my TyTn II to ignore voice calls (or drop gprs data connection) if I am using the TyTn II for internet access for my laptop and a voice call comes in?
I sometimes get the E but as far as i know we dont have Edge in t mobile UK.
how do you remove the G?

Same thing here in Baltimore. I have not seen my 3G icon in a while, only the H.
data speeds seem to be the same though.
My G Icon changes to E Icon
Hello,
I have a small problem...
First I will Switch ON my wizard. After Switch ON I will see a G Icon at top of the today screen ( That is correct ). When I press the power button, the screen goes off (i.e Goes to Sleep Mode ) and again I press it to wake up. but now the G icon will change to E icon.
I not understanding why this happens.........
Also when i connect to GPRS internet but it shows as I am connected to EDGE with E icon ( This happens on when I wakeup the device )
My probem is that why the icon should change when I wakeup the device.
To confirm you that, I have also disabled the "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" setting in registry.
This problem will not occur in wm5 but only in wm6 or wm6.1.
In wm5 There is no E icon or it is not showing as "connected to EDGE" when I connect to GPRS internet.
Please any one help...............
Thanks in advance

3G and H are both different types of 3G. Some ROM will distinguish between them, other ROMs show them both as 3G. H is faster than standard 3G, so you don't have a problem...
Edit: OK, that's weird. My response appears before your question, and the time is wrong...?

Hi,
I recently brought my Nexus One for repairs because my phone would restart automatically after my phone gets to hot. After I got my phone back from repairs, they must have fixed the problem. But then another problem started! I have problems with my Nexus One to connect to the 3G network in my area.
My Nexus One sees the network. But when I try to use 3G it looks like it tries to connect to it but the network doesn't seem to respond. Then sometimes my phone switches from a "3G" to an "H" and that works always.
Does anybody know what the problem might be? I can't barely send text messages, place calls or use the Internet! I hardly think that its a problem with my network provider considering that my brothers G1 phone works wihtout any problem!

Maybe the idiots at Telamon sent you the wrong model? (T-Mobile vs. AT&T?)

Check that you're using correct APN for your carrier.
My phone doesn't always switch to the H. Sometimes it sits at 3G and it seems that the network doesn't respond. Sometimes when I use WIFI it takes a few minutes until the WIFI starts working, even though the phone indicated that it connected to WIFI correctly. I was using the standard Android 2.2 ROM from Google but I decided to put on CyanogenMOD a few weeks ago but its still the same problem. I guess I'll just have to deal with it...
My carrier had some little problems during the past weeks, aparently they were working on something. I sometimes, for short periods, did not have data connection or no servic at all. Now the problems are gone and a speedtest today showed that at my home, the download speed went from an average 1 Mbit to over 5 Mbit!
However, the H symbol won't go away anymore! It used to switch to 3g when not data was transferred. I assume that this will influence battery life.
Is there anything I should be worried?
From what I recall, H is faster than 3g, as long as your in a good signal area, the H will always be visable, it will only drop down to 3g if the area your in has no H signal... and if there is no 3g it will drop to a 2g signal... simples, having the H does not meen that data is being transfered!
I am aware of the different speed levels, what I experience now is that the H symbol stays all the time, whereas it used to change to 3g when idling even in areas with very good reception...

Wait, I don't get what you're saying. Let me clear it up:
Very good reception = H
Not so good reception = 3G
You want to see H (means HSDPA which is a a type of 3G data, but it's faster).

Okay, I'll try that too!
I live in an area with very good reception and therefore the phone used to switch from 3g to H whenever data was transfered and back . Now, however, it stays on H all the time and does not switch back to 3g when no traffic occurs.
It is just a change in the pattern my phone behaves so I wanted to get some info on that...
Hi, it's your phone doing what it should by seeking the best signal.
H refers to HSDPA which is based on UMTS (3G). Consider it a 'turbo' version of 3G. It's sometimes also referred to as 3G+ because it's faster then 3G but not really 4G technology. The tower in your area most likely got upgraded to HSDPA that's why you don't see the 3G icon anymore.

Not correct, he mentioned that his phone was using H on demand before, so the capability was there already.
The problem is that H mode uses more battery than 3G, which is why it normally only switches to H during data transfers instead of continously being on.
Possibly your provider made a change which forces your phone to stay in H mode. On hardcores homepage (see speedmod kernel thread) he describes a method to manually deactivate H mode if you want to play with it.
Hope that helps.

seems to be the explanation... Suddenly I have ~6 Mbit, so almost unsurprisingly there had to be a catch
as for disabling H, it would be permanently so not quite an option. I guess, I'll have to live with it but nevertheless I'll call customer support..
Hspa and 3g are actually different technologies, but can be used on the same site and freq. If you have noticed that your phone is nowdays all the time showing H ( hspa ) and not in 3g like before it means that your carrier has expanded their hspa features and capacity of the network on that area. Main difference between these two tech is of course the speed and how network resources are shared between the users. In 3g you have dedicated ones, but speed limited and in hspa you are sharing the resources between other ones under that cell area. hspa is good if you are near by the cell and there is not too many users from battery consumption point of aswell from througput point of view, 3g is better if you are on the cell edge due to dedicated resources reserved only for you. Main point is, battery consumption of your phone depends mainly how you use your phone ,what kind of applications you have and how often those are connecting/contacted by the network.
Browsing in 3g sucks!

Hi, I'm having some problems with my mobile data connection. I live in Brazil, and I'm always traveling between two cities. In one of them I always have the signal of a 3G+ network. everything works normally.
but the city number 2, I only get the signal H / H +, and with this signal I can't get network access.
PS: in the city number 1 I also have the same problem when I receive signals H / H +
This problem persists independently of the flashed ROM.
Sorry for the possible errors in the translation.
ops... I think I created the topic in the wrong area, sorry.
Its because in city 2 the network isn't enough covered.
Are you the only one with this issue?

Im from the UK and got the same problem. Im on h/h+ mostly. I am working in a metal box warehouse that blocks all signal nicely, so if mobile data enabled the data connection drops or changes to hspda or gprs. I know certain points where the signal is fine so theoretically the connection should b restored automatically, but it wont. If I scan for network provider and register on 3g network of giffgaff it working immediately. It seems the phone drops the previous tower and connects to another which has no 3g capable signal, but in network setting the preferred is lte, so I guess the phone should find the best available data network. Sometimes the only way to go online again is restarting phone cuz there is no data connection at all. Weird.
Hello guys. Been using my BS for nearly a month. but i had noticed something strange, that is whenever im on data connection idle, it shows H as in HSDPA connection. but as soon as i load a page using opera mini, or any other apps that needs data connection, the H indicator changes to 3G.. and the page was loaded somewhat slow because it was on UMTS (3G) connection only. Im running Maximus HD rom 3.0.. and this problem also exist on stock rom. It is not my carrier fault because as i insert the sim card into my note 2, it can load page and surf the net on HSDPA connection.
is there any possible fix for my probs. thanks.
