Hi Am switching to Sprint and want an android. I'm 55 years old and love to text. Is this a good choice to intro me to android world.(never had touch screen but I'm a fast learner) Text, internet and talk are the order of importance that I will use the phone for. I think the Evo would be too much to start with. Whats your expert opinion. Had a Nokia 6301 for last 2 years. Thanks in advance.

I was a Motorola RAZR user before switching to the Hero, so in terms of phone usage, technology platform, and priority of functions the phone provides, it was a big difference. The touch screen is not difficult to get the hang of, the only thing is that may take some getting used to is the touchscreen keyboard (definitely some learning curve there, compared to a tangible one). Other than that, you shouldn't have a problem.
In truth, the EVO and the Hero will provide essentially the same functionality; EVO has 4G connection, the Hero doesn't, but in terms of OS configuration and general usage, they are very similar. They both run (stock, of course) on HTC Sense, HTC's shell over android that replaces a lot of the stock android programs with shiny and beautified new ones. The big difference between the two is the hardware. The reason the Hero has such a huge community of support on these forums is that it has very limited hardware, and most found that stock it ran very slowly. Hence, the need to mod and improve it, and if I may say so myself, they've done it quite well. The EVO actually has the hardware to properly run HTC Sense, but there is a large community for the EVO as well, and growing.
Either one will have essentially the same learning curve in terms of functionality. The Hero has one of the largest communities of support on these forums, so asking a question as you did will usually get a response (and one that is far more useful than any Sprint Rep could give you). The EVO has a good-size community as well, and has 2x the processing power, memory, and extra goodies like a front-facing camera for video chat and stuff. The Hero is $149.99 with a new contract, the EVO is $199.99 with a new contract (if they have it in stock; there has been a MASSIVE shortage).
This is just the background information; I recommend going to a Sprint store and playing with them yourself. A lot of people don't like the EVO because it is HUGE size-wise. A lot of people scoff at the Hero because to get it to run well, either serious work or rooting is pretty much mandatory. Either way, I say its a good choice. If you have any more questions, let me know, but good luck in your search!
If you go to the hero pm me with any questions u might have if I can help ill b glad to and I'm on here a lot warning its very addictive lol and IMO I'd go the hero first time around good luck

No expert on these things, but as one newbie 55 yo to another the Hero is a good phone to start out with. The Evo is too if you can get used to something that large coming from a smaller phone. Both have a ton of stuff on them to start out with..but as far as which one to get..you got 30 days from signing up with them to really decide which you prefer. You have more screen size with the Evo and a lot faster processor to start. Like what has been said..go try them both out and see which you prefer..I never thought I would get the hang of a touch screen keyboard and now I wouldn't go back to one..they just add way too much bulk to a phone for my taste and I can type and correct just as fast as using a real keyboard now.
Mac
thanks
Thanks for the insights. I'm going to get the Hero. (contract is up Sept 16th with Tmobile) I will be back in the next couple weeks to let you know how its going. I'm really interested in the process of making the Hero go faster. Its something I will probably persue after I have it for a while. Again, thanks for the replies.

Ah, Grasshopper, you have chosen wisely!
I'm a couple years your senior, have had a Hero for about a year, have rooted and flashed my phone to the point where I'm very happy with it. Have also become something of a root-meister for the rest of the family
These phones are like computers: you always want them faster. Having said that, I use my phone mostly for (gasp) phone calls, texting, MMS, and casual browsing and Youtube viewing. The Hero - especially when modded, is quite up to the task.
My only complaint is the tiny tiny text within many of the apps. Obviously, the developers are all 20-somethings with the kind of eyesight I used to have when I was that age <GRIN>.
The EVO has a larger screen, but not having played with one, I don't know if that translates to larger type, or just more tiny type that can fit on a larger screen?
As someone else said, the Hero has a huge support base in the community, so you'll find lots of help as you learn and navigate your way around it. If you get a Hero, you'll be happy with for at least a year or two as you develop further insight as to what you want in one of these phones.
Before discovering how to root and mod my phone with some of the excellent ROMs available (I'm now using Cyanogenmod 6) I was ready to go back to my Katana. The stock ROM is cludgy and frustrating. With CM6, my Hero is now snappy and responsive and I can see living with it for another year...until the next upgrad.
Good luck!

coming from t mobile you can get the hero for 1 cent on amazon, just got two for my parents in their 60s and they love them.
Personally i think you should gget an evo...its practically an upgraded hero. The only reason why you should pick up a hero over an evo is if screen size is a problem. And cost.
Dont get me wrong, i love my hero. Ive had it since day one, but if i had known about the Evo before hand, then i wouldve opted for that. Especially since it works great out of the box (after a few updates, but the hero was that way too ). Its almost a neccessity to root the hero mostly because the processor is slow. But after you get it running at ~700mhz its great
But personally im going for the epic 4g on october 1st. Its like an Evo with a keyboard! Plus, it may be thicker than the Evo, but its just as thick as my hero, so thickness is a non-issue for me

Well guys... the time has come for me to move on. I recently got a 32gb Iphone 3GS last week and love it! The main reason I moved to it was for its speed and incredible improvements in features over the 3G, as well as the amazing touchscreen keyboard. I really had wanted to go with the Touch Pro 2 for AT&T, but could not wait till October for the release. Also, I had a chance to try out the TMobile version of the Touch Pro 2, but was a little let down by it. I expected it to be much better from all the rumors surrounding it on the web, but it wasn't. I was hoping the VGA resolution and wider screen would make the all new touchdscreen keyboard on the TP2 as good as the Iphone, but it wasn't very accurate. I loved the hardware keypad buttons my Kaiser, but since the TP2 doesn't have those and is full touchscreen unless the keyboard is slid out, I figured I might as well get the Iphone since it's a touchscreen as well. The TP2 seemed a little slow compared to what I thought it would be from the online reviews. The slide out keypad was very nice, and much better than our Kaiser's. Another thing that WM doesn't have which is why I switched to the Iphone, is its Facebook app with chat. I use Facebook at work daily, and love the ability to be able to see who's online on my phone. I had been under the belief that I would always stick with Windows Mobile since it is so customizable. I loved my HTC Kaiser, which I successfully converted from a Tilt to a TyTN II by changing the housing and adding the front camera. I am truly amazed at how much I learned about this device since I joined this forum, from flashing custom roms, to changing registry settings, and configuration settings to make the device work even better. Before this forum, my Tilt was a joke since it was so slow. Now, it's amazingly fast, and very functional.
Basically, I just wanted to thank all the members on this forum who helped me whenever I had any problems. All of you were so helpful and were quick to respond. I also wanted to thank all the chefs and developers who put all their hard work in to making those custom roms for free, and updating them frequently. I really enjoyed the WM 6.5 releases you guys created, even though it isn't officially out . Lol.
My Tilt has been the first phone that I have owned that I still truly love, even after getting a new Iphone. I will be attending Cal Poly University in a few weeks, majoring in Electrical Engineering, and plan to bring my Tilt with me. I still browse this forum almost daily, since the developments, along with the members, are just great. I plan to still update my Tilt with new roms that come along, since it just seems wrong not to, and is something I have been doing forever. I am not truly leaving this forum, just won't be here as often since I have a new daily device. I will still be around here though to offer help to people who have problems or need advice.
Anyways, sorry for the long post, but just wanted to thank everyone, instead of just basically leaving on a bad note saying WM sucks. I believe it can only improve, and can't wait to see what lies ahead for it. Thanks again.

I'm so on the edge as well....have the Tilt all modded out, and want the Touch Pro 2, but I keep seeing my brother doing all this stuff on his iphone and so I've been looking for an unlocked used one to try out on T-mobile. If the TP2 wasn't $350 bucks!!! I'd already have it....

I too went to the Iphone. Sigh
Thanks for the positive comments left by the few of you that did. I am in no way biased toward the Iphone, nor WM, I just appreciate a fine device, regardless of its make. For those of you that have criticized the Iphone, I ask you this, "Have you even tried the new 3GS out yourself, or are you just basing your opinion on responses from other people?" Before the 3GS, I never would have considered the Iphone, since it's features really weren't that great. The 3GS has some amazing features, that truly swayed me. There are just some things that truly make the Iphone better. I was sick of not being able to do what friends of mine were able to do with there older Iphones, like Facebook chat, as well as get some of the amazing apps available from the app store. The 3MP camera with autofocus is truly amazing! Also the amount of storage space on the phone is truly great. For me, I own a MacBook Pro, so switching to the Iphone made compatibility between the two much easier. Not here to criticize devices, just here to clear up some misconceptions about them.

Good luck. The 3G is pretty good, but for me, the 3GS was the only model that was actually an upgrade for me from the Tilt. I love taking pictures and videos, so getting a basic 3G would have been a downgrade due to a lower MP camera, and no video recording. Not to mention that the 3G can't do tethering, unless it is jail broken I believe. Plus the 3GS is twice as fast!

If you really think that this thing is going to take decent pictures and video for you, you are going to be sadly disappointed. I went to a wedding yesterday with my 3Gs 16GB Black, the camera is great outdoors with natural light in ideal settings, but so is my " dollar store " keychain digital camera. Inside in appropriate wedding lighting, it was useless.
Aside from that , what do you have A.D.D. ? Chumley Ex and I both have Tilts and 3Gs' , we haven't said goodbye. It's like being married and having a girlfriend on the side , can't you do both ?
I am a loyal Tilt-er (for the past two years), and I just tried out a 3GS this weekend to see what all the fuss was about.
It is a beautiful machine, but there are several things that I still find inferior to the Tilt:
1. Soft keyboard makes typing long messages difficult.
2. Can't sync POP properly. I can delete messages off the server from my phone, but when I delete messages off the server and I've already downloaded them to my phone, they stay on my phone. Tilt handles that and keeps all POP inboxes synced to the server.
3. Switching between email accounts is incredibly tedious and time-consuming, having to back out of one and then go into another, especially if you have many folders.
4. Still no GPS app with text-to-speech for street names.
5. Horrendous battery life.
Did I miss anything? Am I wrong about any of these? I do like the iPhone, but it doesn't feel like I'll be productive enough. Thoughts? Thanks.

Wish you a happy life with your iPhone.
hey.. Where can I find "all" those tricks to get my Kaiser faster btw? There's not a general topic saying "get it fast" and and I can't make a accurate search since I don't know what makes it faster?
quite off topic.. hope someone can tolerate and help =)
bye mate =)

Tilt is bulky and slow compared.
Tilt music and video play back suck, if you can get video working at all
Internet access and browsing is slow and clunky compared.
Can't play my DRM itunes library on Tilt.
Tilt can be "fixed" for all of this , but 3Gs out of the box does it all,
Both your list and mine go on and on, which is why I have both.
The cool thing about the tilt was that 2 years ago it did pretty much everything the newer iphone do now. When the tilt hit the stands the iphone was only edge, it had no gps etc.
The tilt can go to all the nice flash pr0n site, the iphone only gets one.
the iphone is smooth and it just feels like something from the future.
After using Android on Touch for 2 months, I'm convinced that my next phone will be an Android phone. Now I need to convince my family members who want Iphone. Nobody has either Android phone or iphone at the moment.
I'm using Touch as a proxy for Android phone and my wife uses Ipod Touch as a proxy for Iphone. Unfortunately, it is obvious that Itouch blows Android Touch in terms of UI, speed and stability.
So my question is are android phones such as Droid, Incredible offer much more speed and stability (no FC) than Touch? I want to hear first hand experience rather than spec comparisons.

then you are posting in the wrong forum; most of the frequenters here have the HTC Vogue: Touch CDMA . . .
I believe we've had several members graduate to a "android device" and they have had nothing but good results. Jamezelle I think was one of them, he got an Eris and loved it if I remember right.
There is a night and day difference is speed stability etc. The nexus one, or sony x10 for example run cpu's that are more than twice the speed of our vogue, and a better cpu to boot.
My friend has a sony x10, he compared it with a few of his buddies who have iphones and the screen quality itself was the biggest difference. Vilord got an incredible, went out with some of his iphone buddies, nothing held a candle to the incredible in terms of speed/screen quality.
android = more free apps, faster cpu's faster gpu's, more 'hacking/customizing' ability
iphone = ease of use for non technically oriented people, tons of commercial apps, yeah they cost but they mean better quality too.
Don't take me wrong, I obviously prefer android, but the iphone is also really nice, I wouldn't complain if I had one, especially since they're starting to be able to run android. lol

I'm going to say that I completely agree with this statement. I ran android on my touch for quite awhile and switched to an eris. I'll tell you it was a great move, not to knock the vogue, but the screen clarity/size, speed and capacitive touch + multi touch are a huge upgrade.
Being in this forum got me hooked on android, and consequently I had my vogue longer than any other phone in the past (my thanks go to the devs and the community), but I'm sure happy to have an upgrade. Now onto the incredible..
As for swaying people to use the native android devices, one of my buddies and my girlfriend have an iphone and a bb storm. When they saw android on my touch they kinda laughed at it and thought it was a "cool" novelty, crammed on my small device, but now that I have the eris, they both want an android phone. My girlfriend wants my eris when I get the incredible and my buddy is probably gonna sign a 2-year with vzw for the incredible, or get the nexus on t-mobile.
To each their own though, some people like the "simplicity" of the iphone, but when they actually see their options, they may want to change...

I just graduated from the Vogue to the Incredible and as nice as the Vogue was running Android it doesn't compare to running Android on a native device for a few reasons.
A) Everything works out of the box (MMS, GPS, Bluetooth, etc)
B) Way faster (No slow downs, freezes, reboots, etc)
C) Multi-touch (Capacitive vs Resistive)
D) Bigger and brightrer screens. (3.2in or more vs 2.8in)
The Vogue running Android is definitely ready for daily use and its more than a side step to a native phone but it still a bit short of the new phones. Also consider the age of the device. Its amazing how much extra life Android has given this device but its just not a fair comparison.
I love my Vogue and kept it for 26 months only because of Android. Bottom line, if you think Android is nice on the Vogue, you will think its awesome on and actual Android device

hehe. I was thinking about that the other night. At this point I think an iPhone would be a pretty sweet device to have. The best of both worlds.
I've seen the YouTube videos of it running Android and it appears to be running pretty good.
I had an iPhone for a couple months. Honestly I prefer even Windows Mobile.
Yes the iphone is beautiful, shiny, all that jazz great apps don't get me wrong, it's fantastic.
BUT
I mean this in the most sincere way - I firmly feel it is NOT your device. Apple's name is written all over every aspect of your device. I'd compare it best to communist Russia - good overall standard of living maybe, but no individuality, no choice, nothing. Sure there's cyanomod (sp) but the breaking point for me was when my iphone was having a problem and the only way to fix the problem is plug it in and resync / restore with itunes (epic facepalm).
Now Android is leaps and bounds ahead of Winmo, with regards to UI, but truthfully, just being able to troubleshoot your own device, having those errors here and there, it really is something to be appreciated when you are on a device that is owned by someone else. I can only imagine how wonderful it must be to have a droid or nexus one - I dream of it as a present day utopia.
Whatever you do, make sure you really try the iphone and see if you can really make peace with it. I absolutely could not. Everything is completely dumbed down. Don't get me wrong - I'm all for the ease of use and minimalist experience, but I feel Android strikes the right balance - flush between iPhone and Win Mo. YMMV, maybe you like your phone to just do what it's told and have no connection to it. For me, I get quite emotional with these little things. Pretty soon I'm going to have to buy a ring for this Vogue, it's going on 3 years...
Call me corny, I just feel NO emotional connection to the iPhone. I feel like it was just handed to us and we're told this is your phone, use it. Almost like going to a public library and lending out a computer but you can't do anything to it.

That is so funny...it was like I was reading a post about myself in the 3rd person or something....That is the exact same reaction I received from my g/f and her brother who rocks the BB Storm...but the funny thing is, last week, he asked me what I thought about the incredible because he is now thinking of making the switch from BB. Who's laughing now!

I agree 100%. I'm sold with Android. I like to tweak things to make it work.
But my family members like simplicity over functionality. They don't even know what jailbreak means. Nevertheless, they like Ipod touch. Go figure.
I have to convince them that the new Android phones just work out of box. As you can expect, demonstrating Android using HTC Touch won't make them convinced.
I am supposed to get a business demo of the Incredible, so Ill report back here. They're apparently on back order even for business demos, so it might be a week or two. I currently have the xv6900 running on Verizon with Myns RLS5 on NAND.
yes i have also graduated from my vogue to an eris, and then to the motodroid, and android is 300% better than it was on my vogue
Up until got the HTC TOUCH (VOGUE) My friends would laugh at me and ask "OK what phone did you get now?" I would literally go thru a phone every 7-9 months. Until the Vogue came into my life. Sure everyone got BlackBerries and iPHONE's, but I would never have enough incentive to move over. I have been using using Myn's ANDROID on my touch for the last 90 days and it gets better with every release, but I still get hiccups and crashes from time to time. Sometime the phone will lockup completely. (granted I am running off a CLASS 4 SD card) I just love the form factor of the device. HTC really got it right when they released this phone. But alas .... now that I have a taste for ANDROID I know that my next device will probably be the HTC EVO on sprint.
I'm a current iPhone 3G owner and I'm due for an upgrade. I was at the AT&T store last week buying my girlfriend an iPhone4(ironic, right?) and saw the Captivate. I picked up the phone and fell in love, I love the screen, love the interface, loved everything about it. My immediate reaction was, I need to have this phone, this is going to be my upgrade. I start reading around websites and forums and all I've been reading is negative things about the Captivate.
My question is, is the Captivate an upgrade over the 3G and is there really that many issues with it? I'm growing tired of the same ole, bland ole iPhone and love the customazation available with the Cap.
Thank you.
Of cause it is an upgrade to your 2 year old iPhone 3G. This is the world of tech.
And yes, there is a lot of issues too. Because there is no perfect thing in this world.

I came from an iphone 3G, and it is definitely an upgrade from the iphone, yet a learning curve because the 2 OS' are completely different! But so worth the switch!!

I don't think I'll have any problems with anything tech wise, reading around seeing all the issues is what really has detered me from this phone. I think I'm going to make the switch..
You won't regret it. There are fixes for most things, the only issue I have thats still nagging is the GPS problem.

Well, yes, of course the Captivate is an upgrade over the iPhone 3G; the screen alone (nonetheless the rest of its specs) should make that obvious.
Lastly, the only problems I really know with the Captivate is some having GPS issues, and the phone experiencing lag. Otherwise, everything is pretty much an acquired taste due to the switch from iOS to Android. If the Captivate will be your first Android phone, then I can pretty much assure you that that part --switching OSes -- will be the hardest.
I came from a 3GS and felt like it was an upgrade in every possible way, except the Marketplace. It's not quite there yet, but catching up fast.
There are a lot of problems with the phone, but I will tell you this. You will probably have to go through a handset or two (maybe more in some cases) before you find one that works as you expect. Don't be shy about exchanging the handset till you strike gold and don't see anything outside of the GPS issue, which is an admitted software fix from Samsung.
Outside of that, you will be overwhelmed at first. Learning a new OS is always a bit daunting, but when it's an open source OS it's even more so. You have to get yourself into the mindset of how to do things, as opposed to if you can do them. Tons of customization and software choices. The phone really lets you flex your personalization muscles. If you don't like the browser, download a different one. If you don't like the music player, there are 10 more to take it's place.
I qualify for an upgrade next week. I'm stoked. Android has gotten better release after release--the hardware has become rate limiting, I'm ready for a new phone.
What do I get next?
My impressions are that the Samsung Epic is technically a better phone than the Evo 4G but that because it so new that there's much less software development for it at the moment. I enjoy CM6 and have been flashing the nightlies every few days. With Epic, I'd be stuck with 2.1. Will the Epic catch up in development?

I used both the Evo and the Epic and the Evo is a superior phone. Heres why, the community for the evo is way bigger and it has the best devs... guys like Cyanogen, Sterickson and other are evo users and activaley particapate in the forums there. The phone is fast and performs better on every test I've done on both. There is way more development for the Evo. Its 50$ cheaper. Froyo Sense, and a ton of custom mods, all the great devs and theme from here are now in the Evo forums.
I almost got the Epic I like Samsung phones but I was more partial to the verizon epic as I don;t need to physical qwerty. Best way to see what you want is go down to best buy and use them download some apps play around thats what I did and ended up with the Evo, only thing I miss is the track ball but got use to not having it very quickly.
If you liked the Hero then you'll love the Evo.
When im able to upgrade, 12/12/10, im going to get an epic 4G! I did a lot of resarch on it and it seems like a great phone.

I'll go to Best Buy to check them out. Thanks for confirming what I am thinking. I will likely get the Evo. Both seem to be great phones. If I were less addicted to the pace of development, I could be happy with the Epic. They are still waiting for Froyo...
If you have small hands, get the Epic because it's smaller than the Evo.
They are both 4G, but a plus on the Epic is that it has a physical keyboard, so you might want to try that out.
It's your descison, so you should make sure you get the one you want

Are you abandoning the Hero? within a month ill bet we have a working Froyo running on it, with Sense!
I'd at least wait until the Christmas phones come out and see if anything with that sweet 1.5ghz processor is coming out yet. I felt like an idiot when I upgraded to a Hero 3 months before the EVO came out...if I had just been a little more patient I'd have a much better phone. Then again, that would also have meant 3 more months of broken sliders and ****ty Samsung construction, so I guess it's a fair trade. With Sprint Premium you get up grades every 12 months so it doesn't really matter anymore...just pay your bill on time
Also, see the HTC Knight on XDA's main page. Looks like it's coming out for Sprint and should be an awesome deal. When buying technology that moves this fast it's always better to do some research and wait for a release rather than just buy the best thing out there for "right now."
Im waiting till next christmas in 2011 and see whts out then.
I'm actually due for an upgrade tomorrow but I will be waiting for the HTC Knight / Speedy which has a release date in the beginning of January. I do not want a 4G phone as I am in the middle of nowhere and will be prolly be the last to get 4G coverage. That's as long as I can wait unless I hear something about nvidia's tegra2 chip then I guess ill have to wait for that.

Ive had an update since may, but have been holding out to see whats next. Dont have 4g where I'm at, so an evo or epic plus $10 a month doesn't make much sense for me personally...plus I love these hero forums too much to leave.

Had a question for those who used to own Palm pres and rooted them.
As of now how would you compare the Palm Pre (rooted of course) to that of a rooted Hero (say mine, AOSP 2.3.3)
Does the palm offer anything better than the hero does. Just wondering because a guy on C-list is selling his palm for cheap and was wondering if it would be worth the time to maybe switch up phones.
If i'm in the wrong thread sorry, if this offends people because its not directly a Android HeroC question, sorry again. Just wanted to ask
i have no first hand knowledge..but better? perhaps the cpu and the ability to use a touchstone..and a slide out portrait keyboard, which i do know a lot of people that liked that design.
what's not better? probably development for webOS as compared to Android...i'd imagine you can still find more WinMo 6.5 apps than you can webOS, as I never see anyone with Pres or Pixis. Everyone owns Android phones and iphones.
just my $.02
The palm is way smoother and faster, once you overclock it. I'm running screenstate 500/800 and its great. Battery life is pretty good too. Beyond that, I prefer android. There are way more and better apps. Also, tethering on the pre is harder to achieve and is a much slower connection, fwiw. Could be because I haven't figured out how to update radio/profile/prl on the pre.

Good to know
Thanks for the response. Reason i'm asking is i'd just like a change of phone for now and i'd rather not do a true upgrade, but instead maybe move to a phone that was what i was trying to decide on when i first got my upgrade last year.
Again thanks for the responses.

Be careful though, activating an "old" phone is considered an "upgrade" to Sprint, so they will charge you the new $10 premium data charge that comes with activating a smartphone.

don't that just suck! did it to me when switching to a used hero from a hero!
man i wish we wouldve got that webos port to work awhile back until sandix or whatever that douchebags name was ruined it for everybody, that wouldve have been the coolest thing ever.
The Hero is a great phone ONCE it is rooted. If you don't have the Hero rooted it's basically a pile of crap. I'd pick the Hero(rooted) over a palm pre(rooted) any day.
And with AOSP developing an incredible rom for the Hero, it's a nobrainer.
Nice input guys
Yeah for clarification I do have a rooted hero (aosp 2.3.3) its just i'd like something thats more integrated. I liked, when looking at the pre before, how it integrated all my contacts honestly a lot better. I like having my google account synced to everything, but I've had times where switching roms and stuff i lose important contacts and it sucks.
Just trying to find a different scenery i guess since sprints pretty much put hero's in the dump.
Also as a little note i hate how we're so limited with our phones. Can't play really any games, barely any ROMs that I'd like to try but cant because of our hardware, etc...
Anyways i'm rambling... Take it easy guys

You're not going to get this answer from many people, but the best, most stable firmware in terms of integration is the stock, up-to-date firmware (all OTA updates installed). There were issues when the Hero first received 2.1, but that was almost a year ago. They have released several OTA updates since then, and as far as I know they ironed out any major outstanding issues.
Sure, it's not the latest and greatest, but it's stable. And HTC Sense does have good integration features. I switch back to it from time to time, and the only thing that really disappoints me about it is not being able to download the latest versions of every app due to API differences. But all intended features work as designed, including making phone calls. And there are Sense features that still haven't made their way into other ROM images or apps.
