Does anyone keep their phone "naked"? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've had my phone for a few weeks now with a case on it (body glove mirage). The case is really good, but every time I have to take it off for something I'm reminded how much better the phone feels with no case on it.
I'm curious, has anyone kept it naked? How well has it held up? I'm wondering if anyone who's done this now has scratches or anything on the metal back of the phone.
Thanks!

Mine has been naked since i got it on launch day - still looks new without a single mark on it. I have put my keys in my pocket with it a couple times, but i move them when I realize it.
No scratches on glass, metal or plastic.

I've got butterfingers so for me the case keeps me from tossing he phone across the room when I take it out of my pocket. Plust without it the phone almost feels too light

Hmm. This is promising lol. I do keep it in a pocket with nothing else. I used to keep my iPhone 3g in with my keys. The back did not enjoy that, though the front stayed relatively scratch free.

I've dropped phones before too, thankfully not my Captivate yet. I just played with it without the case some more and it just makes life so much easier. A lot less reaching.
It's so tough. I've never used cases before because I hate the way all of them feel and the width they add. But I also don't want to destroy my phone like my 3G lol.

If you keep it naked don't drop it! The glass is supposed to be tough and scratch resistant but the paint on the metal back plate scratches easily and the plastics get dings when it hits the ground. I droped my phone twice in one day and now have a ding in each corner. That's 2 dings each time I lost hold of it. Now it has one of those film protectors front back and sides. And I have the body gloves case that I go back and forth between.

I have also had mine without a case/screen protector since launch day. the only noticeable scratches are light ones at the top and bottom where it curves on the plastic body. other than that, the screen and back are perfect. I have dropped mine a few times, but its usually about from 2-3' up, nothing like a 6' drop.

Interesting stuff. I think ultimately I'll decide to keep the case on. Because I know that one time I drop it or get a decent scratch I'm going to be cursing myself out for not having it on there lol.
Side question: How well do we think these phones will hold their value?
I ask because I was able to sell my 3g on ebay for $130 even though the screen was dead, the camera was dead, and it was really scratched up. Not bad since I paid 200 for it a year and a half before!

That's the one good thing about buying Apple ANYTHING. It holds its value like crazy. I can tell you from experience that the 1 year old HTC Hero can still fetch 200 bucks. A Samsung Moment can get about $150.
The Captivates are selling on Ebay right now for about $400.

My 3G got scuffed on the back from pulling it in and out of a belt holster that was lined. I finally decided no more holsters.
As for value - I got $190 for my 8GB 3G. It is hard to say about these. Lots of people want contract free phones. Since the captivate has top notch hardware with 16GB internal and expandable storage, I think it is a good value.
If we can unlock them after Froyo (AT&T said they would after 90 days to me anyway) then I think I can get my $150 back I paid for the phone maybe more.
It is all about supply and demand. I am amazed someone paid what they did for my 3G - it is old hardware, but Apple has people fooled. iPhone 4 is going for $900 on eBay - crazy stuff. As long as Apple doesn't sell an unlocked US version contract free, the prices will stay sky high on iPhone. Captivate, not so much. The non-contract price is about $500 so in 2 years what will people pay for a used one?

Well it really depends which network and which phone I think the captivate being the only decent android on at&t will last a bit longer than maybe the vibrant and other variants like the fascinate or epic whose carriers embrace high end android phones

i go no case.....had my iphone 3g with no case for probably a year and a half, and now i am running a naked captivate also. I actually like the feel of a case better, but have yet to find one i feel like investing in....and it looks so awesome without a case!!

I absolutely love my Body Glove case. It's the best mobile device case I've ever used, and I've had a cell phone for thirteen years.
I kept my first captivate naked for the first three days and noticed that my "Scratch Resistant Gorilla Glass" couldn't hold up to three days in the pocket of my slacks by itself. I was just beside myself as I've had an iphone without a screen protector since the phone launched, and never saw a scratch otherwise.
Seems to me that between the iPhone 4 and Captivate both having threads and threads of scratched devices, Corning needs to rethink the Gorilla Glass formula. Whatever the 3GS screen cover was made of should be the standard. I beat the hell out of that phone and not one scratch to be seen.

I really liked the phone design and lines so I went with zagg max protection. It's just like the screen protector but covers the whole body of the phone, it has no shock protection but its virtually scratch proof.

Naked since day 1. With the exception of 2x 3"x1/4" eGrips strips I put on the back cover sides to prevent me from fumbling the phone like a wet bar of soap. Love the thin-ness and the egrips don't hinder "pocketability".

Had the Sony X10 then switched to the Captivate. I go naked just keep loose change and keys in other pocket. Love the thinness of the phone. Still searching for that perfect skin. Tried a few but just make the phone bulky. A lot of the wear and tear of a phone has to do with your job and lifestyle. Learning to adapt to how you work or play and also how soon you want another phone(gadget lust) plays a part. I tend to sell/trade a newly released phone within 6 months so I try to keep them like new. But to each his own.

It's been a while now, no screen protector?

It's been a while since many of us got the Nexus S. For those of you that decided to go without a screen protector how is your screen now? We know its not Gorilla glass and there has been some debate if one is needed or not. So naked people, how's your screen today? (If you purchased the phone like 4 days ago please ignore this. I'm more curious about people that have had the phone since launch or close to launch)

Beautiful and scratch/mar free.
Been running naked screen since 12/16 with no regrets.
Got my phone mid-January, and I decided to play it safe. Ghost Armor. Love it and it works great.
I'm considering pulling this ZAGG off of this beautiful Super AMOLED.

Ghost Armor interested me, but there's no kiosk near here in Los Angeles.
I used to be really good at installing Zagg full bodies and other brands of screen only, but I messed up my last Zagg attempt (my i9000) and am not 100% happy with the outcome, but not unhappy enough to re-do it, so not sure I want to invest the time and money to go with the GA, especially since I would not put it on the screen, just the back.
I used screen protector on my previous phones (G1, nexus one, G2). When I got this phone I realized that I was taking care of my phones just so the second owner will get a almost brand new phone and wasn't enjoying it to it fullest.
I got the Nexus S and there was no way I'm putting cloth on this sexy screen. I'm enjoying the phone to it fullest. No scratches so far, I also take good care of it by dedicating my right packet only for her, no coins no keys, just my nexy.

Ooo ya, if there hadn't been a kiosk I wouldn't have done the GA. And you'd have to buy the whole body protection which I'll admit adds sharp corners to the phone that I'm not 100% fond of. I actually took off the side protection because it was just too damn sharp.
By the way, distorted. Have you noticed its pretty much just you and I in the mornings and that we just end up chatting?

Yeah, actually I had noticed that you and I tend to hit the same threads at the same time.
Maybe we're just the only ones on the West Coast...everyone else has hit work by now. For them, it's not as much morning as for us.

Fair enough, though I'm surprised by how early you get up. I'm only up this morning because my wife woke up with a fever so I'm up taking care of her for a bit.
I Zagged my first one but had to return it(TBH i didn't like the zagg but like to keep my phones in tip top condition as i only keep them 6 months.)
anyway CPW replaced my phone last week because the back button wasn't working but I could't transplant the zagg so went naked !
bad decision...although I keep it in a leather pouch, I noticed yesterday there is a small scuff to the screen coating near the earphone.
I love the phone but what a bad decision not to have gorilla glass or factory apply a protector!
I'm going to take it back to CPW and see if they'll replace it under sale of goods as the screen is not performing as expected - no one would expect a scuff within 5 days if their phone is only ever touched by fingers or the felty inside of phone pouch.

I don't sleep much. I was up at 3:00 AM local today, but took a short nap at 4:30 or so.
Getting old sux, you need more sleep, but can't seem to get it!

Sorry for off-topic to the rest.
no issues whatsoever. Screen protectors r overrated.
I got mine on first launch day, and basically I used that one as my experiment phone just to see how durable the screen was in comparison to my previously owned N1. I had the phone about 2 weeks before I noticed some very light scratches on the screen. Nothing visible head on, you could only see it from an angle with a light source reflecting off of it. For the most part, I kept it in my pocket free of hard items, but there were times when I threw it in my pocket with a few coins and keys in there. My second unit I kept for about a week. I specifically steered clear of sharing my phone with other items in the same pocket. Lo n behold, another small scratch surfaced up on the display. As I said before, it's nothing you can see right off, unless you specifically look for it. Over a short period of time, using this phone without a screen protector, will develop some sort of scratches on it, guaranteed!

I have the Nexus S for 10 days now. No screen protectors but I put it in a soft pouch when it's in my pocket. So far pristine.
I've been carrying mine in a ziplock in my pocket. My pockets seem to attract lint like no tomorrow, and I dont
want any getting stuck between the screen and bezel. I wish my cases, soft pouch, and Skinomi skin would show up already.
Phone is pristine, I'm just trying to avoid micro-scratches on the battery cover.

I use ziplocks for my phone when it's raining (which doesn't happen much here in LA); I don't even need to take out of the bag to make a call or use the phone.
Ive had mine for about 6 weeks now...just before christmas i got it. Up until about a week ago i used it with no screen protector. Its fine as you would expect. But anyway i been using a screen protector for about a week now, and i feel a lot better...i dont have to worry about any little accidents or anything.
Screen responds exactly the same...no issues.

What protector is the best for clarity? I have a Zagg and it isn't the best for clarity.
I have seen a realook on a captivate and it looks great but they don't make one for the Nexus S.

Seidio and Steinheil. Clarivue is also good.
Ghost armor all the way! No issues here with it. Had it on my g1 and it kept the phone perfect for 2 years. That one was applied by the kiosk. Don't have one real close to me now in this state but after applying these things now in a few phones I could probably do it in my sleep. Nothing under my screen and it looks and feels great. No clarity issues and it seems the film self heals scratches. You can just barely see orange Peel in certain angles under the light but you can't feel it. I had the zagg before and its utter crap in comparison. The zagg is very bumpy and the thickness of it doesn't feel right on the phone. I've found the ghost armor to fit better as well. I originally wanted a static type like realook but with the curve of the screen it doesn't seem any of those type will fit as flush as this one.

Does the HD7 need a case / screen protector?

So, after thinking about jumping off the iPhone bandwagon i've decided to jump on to the HD7 bandwagon.
Just bought it today from eBay and will be recieving it in the next couple of days.
I've never used cases before on my phones, mainly because i think they make the phone look ugly plus they make the phones bigger and the iPhone 4 was no different - and i've dropped it multiple times and there is not a single mark on it...
But i'm not sure about the HD7 - it does look a little fragile. Screen protectors i hate with a passion (mainly because i can never put them on properly )
So, is it worth getting a case for this phone or is it OK to leave it naked?
Ta muchly,
Casdawer.
I've had mine for several months now. No screen or case protecting it.
Nary a scratch or scuff on mine. If you were able to keep your iPhone scratch-free, you shouldn't have an issue. It's not at all fragile, imo. I've even dropped it a few times from a few feet and suffered no damage.

I beg to differ on this. I NOW use a case (Otterbox Commuter) on my HD7 as I dropped mine on the asphalt in my parking lot and only from about a foot or so up (I was bent over) and it damaged 2 of the corners on my device (not the screen THANK GOD). I recommend that you use some type of case be it a soft gel or a hard shell just to be safe.
As for screen protectors... Spend the couple extra bucks and get someone who knows how to put it on do it for you and get a QUALITY one like Ghost Armor, etc and not just the cheap kind. You will be glad you did.
I was thinking this case...

+1. Best case. Had one for my iPhone 4 as well.
Just to put my 2p in. I've had the Official HD7 Leather Case since the day i bought it and it's certainly done the trick.
The stitching on the edges and corners of the case absorb the impact if you drop it from too far (i've dropped mine 2 or 3 times from waist height with luckily no damage or scratches to the phone)
i got my HD7 a couple days ago, and I had to get a case right away. The power/standby button on the top on my phone is really bad (been hearing from others theirs is pretty flush with the phone as well) so i got a case from t-mobile with a button on the top. case covers everything except ports and screen.
also went into the mall and had a ZAGG invisibleshield installed by one of their sales reps, which was great they put it on perfectly which i probably wouldnt have done.
trust me when you have your phone protected its a big weight off your mind since the phone did cost quite a pretty penny
I don't use a case on my HD7. But I don't drop phones, nor do I put them in my pocket along with my keys. If I put it in a bag along with anything that's not soft, then I will pop it into the official case, but that's very rare.
Common sense really. Neither the phone's body nor its glass screen have any scratches. And it's 6 months old.
Dropping a phone isn't really a lack of common sense is it
**** happens, people drop phones. It's good to have a case on when that day happens.
If you've never dropped any device then i solute you.
the only problem i have is the paint or what ever it is is starting to chip on the kickstand on mine, not a problem the undercoat of meal looks the same
HD7 is a master piece of technology that really need good cares and attention...however it reminds me my old unbreakable nokia 6600.
By accident (i precise it...if mental stability matters , it has survived from many stunts like climbing a wall from the top to the ground and diving few seconds in the cat's drinking fountain (a screwdriver and 2 hours of hair dryer)...
From that day i bought a soft silicone case which covers everything that don't need to be seen or plugged or take pictures (not like the one Blue1k linked...buttons are visible, and by the way it's not an hd7 device), with that smooth black case my hd7 isn't really bigger, those crappy noisy moving buttons are covered and 100% efficient (even the camera one which need to be half-pressed for the automatic focus)...i recommend it.
The screen protection should be present from day one when you open your so expected new phone, scratches are ugly, aren't they?
i like my HD 7 to be without case but it slips.... so i bought a clip on case and a silicon case...
matt screen protactor is a must for me as the screen gets so much finget prints all over and my son leaves food prints...
i dont like the silicon case as it makes it look fat so i am using the clip on case all this while...
dropping your phone has notthing to do with common sense... unless u are a control freeeeek then it maybe common sense....
i dont carry bags, my note book is in a case and get dumped in my car when i have to go, same for my phone, in my pocket all the time, some times in my back pocket of the jeans... to me phone is a tool and all the time its abused...
my phone do not last more then a year...
Just ordered this one -
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/silicone-case-for-htc-hd7-black-p26570.htm
Thought i'd start basic and see how it goes.
i just bought myself a otterbox case from bell, which i got for $35. Doesn't add too much bulk to the phone. I noticed that on mine, the metal coating has started to peel off around the edges. So i decided i can lose a little aesthetics for over all benefit of the device.
I got a screen protector too, but got lint underneath it and it iriitated me, so ripped it off, but the glass is gorilla glass anyway if i am not mistaken, so it should be ok unless you put it with keys and such.

screen protector recommendations?

I bought a set of 10 and they didn't cover the buttons.
I bought another set of 10 and they were too wide and would curl up at the edgeß because they extended over too far.
The otterbox for this phone did not come with a built in screen protector.
I need screen protectors. Im rough on my phone. Any recommendations? Post a link to a good manufacturer or retailer so I can buy some which work and are cheap so I can replace them frequently.
I got an XtremeGuard off amazon for $1. Its thick but not as thick as zagg. (Same wet install and give it a a day for all the tiny bubbles to dry up) I've gotten one for all my phones. I love em!!

If your buying a set of 10, then something tells me that they are not that good to begin with. Anytime i have bought a screen protector it has been 1. Unless the purpose was to cover 10 phones I don't see why anyone would buy a set of 10. After all you only need 1 protector to cover your phone.. unless they are complete crap and you go through em.
but really.. spend the money, buy a nice one. There are a couple out there that have great reviews and even some that will insure your device even more. I don't use em for a couple reasons.. but i think zagg and gorilla glass are ones you could look into.. just my 2cents

I don't spend "the money" on expendable items. I had an iPhone previously and I would spent alot on the screen protector because my otterbox had a very hard piece of scratch resistant plastic on the front covering the screen. On this phone, I have been through several screen protectors. I need some cheap ones because theyare going to get damaged
Im not planning on spending more them $3 per screen protectorbecause of the frequency which I damage them. I want a cheap, low quality, thin, maybe even slightly too small, easily scratchable, maybe even difficult to apply screen protector.
I don't want a reputible name brand. I want cheap screen protection that works and actually covers thewhole screen because I am rough with my phone.

Hey man all I'm saying is spend 3 dollars all the time (if you really are scratching your screen that much) or spend 20 and have some sort of warranty or replacement. Or maybe be a little more careful with your exspensive phone.

I keep that on my dev phone inside its otterbox. It does not leave the house. The "self healing" capability only goes so far. It is really only good for keeping the dust inside an otterbox from scratching the phone. The screen protector is very weak. It gouges easily and under normal applications it has a rippley surface on the face.
Sounds like you have luck with anything unless you just stop being so careless and rough. Protection only goes so far.

Read the first post. 20 bad screen protectors have shipped to me so far. Lack of research and development were to blame. I can handle lack of quality control. But wgen its obvious the manufacturer never even tried to use their products....
Honestly, the ones from at&t seemed pretty good and they are 3/$10.

That's what I use and they have been great. I am on my second in about 6 months and I have maybe two scratches that are obvious when sweat or moisture gets on the phone.
This is my Captivate. There are many like it but this one is mine
I agree with the two above.
The att ones are 3/$10, cover everything but the light sensor and proximity sensor, are clear vs orange peel, and just plain work well.
Definitely agree with the above posts. The pack of 3 from at&t is actually made by Real Look. The pack costs 10 bucks. They apply easily, are super durable, and stay slick like the bare glass so swyping and cleaning the screen is super easy. Each one will last me a good 3 months if I don't gouge it, and that's fairly hard to do with how durable they are. Don't waste your time or money with anything else.

That's what I started using... I have 3 phones. Those last my wife's phone a good long time. My dev phone 3 months, and my personal phone about 1 month. I may order some real look brand if they are actually the same.
Used a matte one from Epikcase. So far so good.

I'm almost positive they are the same. One package that I bought from at&t even had real look branding on the included stuff...unless I was delusional or something. To further reassure i wasn't seeing things though, I suggested real look to a friend for his iPhone 4, and the ones he got are the same material, so I'm almost positive that at&t's are made by real look.
Woot! I found some. 5 screen protectors for $1.59 from Amazon Seller ID: eTECH
I ordered 3 sets for a grand total of 4.77. The guy had a special going on where you order 3 items and receive a 10-in-one USB SDCard reader. So For a total of $11.71 (including shipping), I received 15 screen protectors and a USB SDCard reader.
They aren't as slick and smooth as the AT&T ones, but these are the cheap expendable protection which can be changed on a whim. This is what I was looking for.
Here's a link.. 3 for a dollar. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Captivate-Crystal-Screen-Protector/dp/B0040IUGG6 That's 1/10th of the AT&T price.

Incipio HTC Vivid Feather Ultralight Hard Shell Case

Well, when I got my Vivid, I was leaving 4 years of iPhones behind, so I don't know a life without using phone cases, since we all know how not-that-resistant iPhones are.
The thing is, I live in Brazil and the HTC Vivid isn't sold here. A friend brought it to me from a trip to USA, and I needed a case, and the only way was to buy it online.
It took me weeks of love making with Google until I finally found a store that seemed reliable and that didn't charge over US$80 only for the shipment.
I was really into the Speck purple-ish one, but the shipment was still expensive (don't remember how much they wanted to charge me but it was more expensive than the case itself so still not worth it). I'd seen many people talking about lots of cases that only had in black, and my phone is white so that didn't make any sense.
So I came across myIncipio.com. They offer two different cases for the HTC Vivid, and I chose the Feather Ultralight one, because of the material its made, the colour, price & shipment rates.
Yeah, it leaves all the buttons free, and I'm not that into this on the case, but other than that it's really good. I got it in blue so it looks really good on my white phone.
I've had several polycarbonate cases in the past and I thought this would be the same as them, but the touch is really soft, in a way that I can't describe. It feels so amazing that on the first few days with the case I was always stroking it - lol.
My phone hasn't suffered any falls since I bought the case, so I can't say much on this yet, but it seems to be protective enough - of course it's so slim that it could protect much better, but i believe that it'll work great for every day use. I tend to drop my phones a lot when trying to put them on my pockets (I'm not very bright and I wear super tight jeans a lot) and this case seems to be perfect for this kinda thing.
Anyways, if you're looking for a nice case that won't look bulky, this is the one.
It's US$14.99 on myIncipio.com
Also it comes with a clear screen protector & the usual cloth + applicator card, it's really easy to apply and I didn't get any bubbles at all, didn't have to use the applicator. It's not anti glare or anything but looks really clear and avoid scratches quite fine.
And note that my buttons are getting copper-ish.
It looks really sleek
Although it looks like it wont do well with falls, but good at maintaining everyday wear and tear.
It probably doesn't add any weight to the phone?
i also have the white vivid and this blue case and i love it it doesn't get in the way of any head phone jack

No, it doesn't add any weight at all.
Just a few hours after I posted here my phone dropped for the first time since I bought the case a couple of weeks ago.
Not a single scratch neither on the phone or the case itself. So far so good.
I was really worried because the back cover just ends up half the way across the room when the phone drops and I read people saying that it might damage it permanently, like never being able to keep it in the right place again.
So I'm really glad to have something holding the back cover in place.
And it's incredibly light, and oooh feels so good to touch that I'm starting to concern my friends, can't stop stroking the phone - ROFL.
My wife has the same case and seems to like it...I have the white, Speck candy shell, which I love...it covers everything accept the screen...and the camera and speakers of course...had it off and on hundreds of times while flashing ROMS, taking sd card in and out, and the case has held up to the abuse. Think it was around $30...AT&T and amazon both have them.

Or to protect the world against Nokia
I prefer naked becuse phone in case is ugly
Just a Sock, nothing more ^^ Case is just for Festivals.
I use a case, it's open in the front but stays put on any surface and protects the phone when i drop it.
Always used a case on my previous phone but not on the last. It's more thin in the pocket and for the moment (little more than a year) no scratch or anything like that.
naked.I can't imagine my phone in case.I think its so unconmfortable to use

I would prefer case because anything happened to my phone like fell of the table
or something like that,My phone is protected and also it keep
my phone heat from burning my hand
Never used a case and I drop my phones on average once every month... never had a problem but I sure skipped some hearbeats every time I felt it accelerating at 9.8m/s2 towards the floor.
Naked because my main phone is a Kyocera Brigadier, no matter what I do to it it's still good, even went swimming with it in my pocket and forgot about it, when I got out like 15 minutes later... just pulled it out a and started playing with it, no problem!
Definitely a case for me. Always dropping my phone. Still not used to holding these large 'smart' phones. With flip phones (last one I owned,) I could drop that thing and never really worry.
I always like phones without cases and also without screen guards. According to me it just makes the phone look a bit shabby.
My xperia M2 is about 2 months old and it's naked.
Smiley Case clothing my Sparkle V
In a case, particularly when I'm at work. Sometimes I take the phone out of the case on my off days.
naked since my case's paint is fading away D:
No case, then my family and friends ask how I don't break it.
I have zero sympathy for people that spend hundreds of dollars on a smartphone and have shattered screens (and/or backs, when glass) because they didn't protect them with a case. I have more sympathy for their poor phones (even if they are iPhones). Yeah, a phone is less bulky and in some examples sexier without a case, but a wee bit of TPU that costs a few bucks can save you hundreds in a new phone or screen replacements. I'd also opine that a shattered-to-smithereens screen is far uglier than any case.
