How to set Home Screen? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi:
I am brand new to Captivate (from a Tilt 2), so am exploring Android. So far I am in love with it.
I have searched, and can't seem to find how to set the Home screen. What I mean is, I found how to edit screens (add, remove). But, for some reason the Home button always takes me to the screen farthest to the right. I would like for it to take me to the center screen. How do I do this?
Thanks!

I think on TouchWiz, if you only have 3 homescreens created, the default will be the one on the far right. If you create more homescreens (say 7), it will be the one in the middle. Try adding more homescreens to the right of the one that is defaulted for you right now. Then once you get the one in middle as your default, you can delete the ones to the far left and right if you don't want all 7 screens. Hope this makes sense.

The default is the one with the little home icon at the bottom. You can put it anywhere

Hi:
WD33- Thanks so much. I tried that. I have added and subtracted a million screens, but there seems to be no rhyme or or reason (sometimes it's the farthest one to the left, sometimes it's the second to last etc), and I can't seem to get the middle one as home.
Dani:
Thanks for your reply. I don't see the little home icon. You do mean in the edit screen to edit tabs, right?
Thanks again to both of you!
EDIT: Well, after much trial and error, I had to go back to the original 7 screen layout in order to get the center screen to be home.

[Think Tank] Modify TW default.prop (Default Home Screen)

XDA user bstromberg in my General Sticky thread raised a good question and found an excellent resource. My intent is to try and modify the default.prop file to enable only 3 screens in TW, where the middle screen is the default home screen... and perhaps instruction for 5 screens where 3 is the default home screen.
socket84 had an extrmely helpful post in the Galaxy S I9000 section, which I believe we can use as a resource.... but I am not as intelligent as some of you and will need hand holding. I think this would be extremely helpful to the community, at least till CM6 comes.
Here is the post I just referenced.
Any takers to make this work, and willing to test it out?
I like this idea!!! The home screen needs to me the middle one!
looks like you would modify this property:
ro.csc.homescreen.screencount=2
In his example it is 2, so that would be 3 screens total (starting at 0, 0 is the first screen, 1 is the second screen, and 2 is the third screen).
I'm using ADW so I can't really test, but this should be easy to test and you should backup the original file before you make the change.
To make your middle screen the home screen, then the other property:
ro.csc.homescreen.defaultscreen
would be 1:
ro.csc.homescreen.defaultscreen=1
EDIT: Reading through the whole thread, it may not be that easy.
Sorry, I should emphasize that I posted this here because there are a lot more qualified people... I feel confident I can make a backup and move the new file to this ones place, reboot and test it... but I really don't know how to edit the document or where to add that code... in XDA I trust, I just got a good source to start shown to me and hoped someone would run with it (I also use LP, but may switch back if this gets worked out).

wait yours isn't? both vibrants I got came with Screen 4 as the middle one out of 7... if I press home on another screen it goes back to 4 not 1
^ but if you only use 3 to 5 screens, like i do, i would like to just get rid of the other screens and have 2 or 3 be my default in the center, but it will only ever allow screen 4 to be default, no matter the amount of screens you have (i haven't tried to remove more than 2 screens by the way)
so i too would be very grateful to whoever figured this one out.
it should be noted that your "home" screen defaults to whatever screen you had open last before the device went into sleep mode. so.. in essence there is no true home screen. it just stays on which ever one you last used.
also, there is no need to modify code to remove the extra screens youre not using. just touch the menu key then choose "edit" from the options.. from there you can add or delete screens. you can go all the way down to 1.. and add new screens on either side. for example i have my first screen as #1.. and have two more to the right.. 2 and 3 respectively. when i boot my phone, it always starts on screen #1.
this is an especially useful feature if you would rather just have a single "home" screen with the apps you use most and then use the app tray for all of the rest.
also, IME the middle screen is always the defaut "home" screen when you add an even number of screens on either side from the edit menu.

he's talking about no matter what you do the phone will always try to make screen 4 your home screen so say you have 3 pages (i guess you can call it that) it will try to be on 4 but theres no 4 so it will go to 3 even though you actually want it to be page 2 so it wil be in the middle for the home page
1-2-3 always goes to the last screen if theres not a 4th one in your home screen

thats what i was figuring he was saying.. however i was saying that my phone doesnt do that. i deleted all of my home screens, then added more going 1, 2, 3, in that order.. and my phone starts on 1 every time.
if you are in the edit screen and you add pages like this " 2, 1, 3" it will start on the middle page.

So do you restart your phone after you save? Because mine doesn't do that either.

+1, doesnt work for me. No matter what order I add screen it always goes back to 4 or 3,2,1 if less than 4 screens.

This doesn't work. If I delete all (accept 1 that it wont let you delete), swipe to the right and add a screen that becomes 1, you Cannot add in that order. It will always default 1,2,3,etc.
EDIT: I think what your saying doesn't work because you cannot delete all 7 screens and then decide which one to add in which order. You HAVE to keep one, and no matter what side you add it to it will always keep them numbered in order. So it is impossible to add 1 after 2.
So I added to 2 lines and then just the first line and tried both ways to our default.prop but it did not fix the problem. Right back to 4 for home. It was mentioned in the original post that someone else had they same problem and it was determined that they were using an older version of the ROM and those lines weren't already in there. That is the case with ours so this method doesnt seem to work for us. At least for now.
I feel like some people are not understanding.
Default IS (or tries to be) number 4, always.
If you come back from sleep (or even hit home key from any app) it will go to last screen it was on before sleeping, but if you press home again, by default, or mistake, or just making sure you are on home screen because you are driving or doing other things, it always jumps to the real home screen (4) or closest to, if less than 4 screens.
I agree this needs a fix. Minor issue, but annoying none the less. I have 7 screens and only using 3 because I want middle screen to be default, that is how all other phones are, why did Samsung change it?
ok let me clarify..
when i was deleting all of my unused home screens, and went down to just one, i deleted all BUT the middle screen.. which was labled as screen 4 originally. when i added the two other screens back, the screen then became screen 1 and was labeled as such automatically.. follow?
after looking back on my posts i can see where the confusion was. maybe by my deleting the screens in this manner i haphazardly stumbled upon the "right" way to do it..
When you go from 7 to 1, what was 4 is now 1.
Add two screens and now it can be 2. In the middle.
However it is still going to screen 3, since there is not a4 when you press home. Nobody can get it to do what you claim. Can you post a video or be extremely specific?
I still have my doubts and think we're going to have to edit the file.

I never use my home key to get back to the first page. I always swipe. after hitting my home key mine goes to 3 too.. but when the phone starts up it always starts on page one.. how odd...
ok sorry for the confusion everybody.
Not sure if this has anything to do with it but I decompiled the TouchWiz30Launcher.apk with apktool and there is a launcher.xml file in /res/layout-land and /res/layout-port if you look in this layout.xml file there is a piece of code: android:layout_height="fill_parent" launcher:defaultScreen="1" />
So I am wondering if it has something to do with this also.

[Q] Touch wiz home screen

Question. I seem to have lost my home screen on touchwiz.now when I double click home it slides to the last page of however many pages I've set up no matter if I then shuffle them around each other. Additionally, in edit mode none of my home screen pages show a house icon, specifying home screen, ie the one touch wiz defaults to with home screen double click. anyone know how to restore a touchwiz home page?
There's no way to restore any screens once they get deleted on touchwiz . Sorry
Sent from my fonez so excuze the speling erors
just to be clear i'm not trying to restore a home screen that i've organized widgets and links with.. i'm just trying to reset one of the homescreens to the home one with a home icon. If you edit your homescreens you'll find that one of your screens has a house icon on it and thats the one touchwiz will swing to when you double click the home button.
Anyone?
you found one of the odities of the Touchwiz home screens. If you have less then 5 ( i think) the one on the end becomes your home and you can't change it. If you have 5 or more you can move them around to make the middle one home.
TouchWiz uses pane 4, or the highest number to it as Home. I've never found a way to change this. (aka 3 if you have 3...)
I too had this problem. The only way I found was to leave it on the 7 screen configuration, and just leave the end screens blank.
Hmmm. I seem to have stumbled into this as well. I didn't think it would be possible, but I deleted an empty page and now don't seem to be able to create a new one (now that I have more crap I want to load on one).
yes thats one of the bugs in touchwiz I think. Unless you have 7 screens; the rightmost screen becomes your Home screen. I tried looking for a solution for long time and no go yet. Lets wait for froyo update and may be a new touchwiz! btw you can always install launcher pro or ADWLauncher. But I think touchWiz is more sophisticated that those two.
There is a free app in the market, called SGS Screen Changer that let's you set the default screen when you use the Home Button (needs root and Busybox to work).
Good luck!

Multiple screens with no scrolling

Hi everyone! How can I make three screens with no scrolling, that is I can't swipe between screens but can select the screen by pinching in and selecting the screen. I need this because I am trying to make a screen where it has shortcuts to go to the next screen. So I want to restrict swiping between screens and only use those shortcuts. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try SSlauncher.
I had exactly what you described on my Galaxy S in it worked perfectly. My screens were set up similar to an old telephone address book. On the right hand side of every one of the 9 screens I had were the numbers 1-9. I was the "home" screen. Under the numbers, that went from the bottom to the top of the screen were short description on what was of that screen. Things like "Home", "Office", "Daily", "Games", "Photo"
It was a joy to use and looked very cool with a smooth transition from screen to screen called "Flow".
One of the nicest things -apart from not having to swipe all the time- was that from the "Home" screen to screen 9 did not mean that 8 other screens had to fly past. The next screed regardless of the number always appeared to be the next screen!
SSlauncher also allows you to switch of "swiping" and even have a different background on each screen.
One warning. Do not be put off buy the developers terrible examples on the Play Store or the learning curve. Go to www.mycolorscreen.? for inspiration.
Don't hesitate to pm for help if you need it.

[Q] Re Arranging Home screens

Every time I add an additional home screen it goes to the far right,
I can't seem to move it to another position say far left.
I have tried going into the widget bit long holding the screen I want to move and dragging it, but it doesn't work, only way to do it would be to move all the widgets across one by one.
Any help would be great,
Aaron

the only way is make a new screen the home screen so if you want one screen on the left and 2 on the right make the 2nd screen the home screen or the last screen the home screen
i hope that makes sense

[Q] Moving Home Screen

I was wondering how to move my home screen from the one on the far left to the center screen? I have looking for a way for a couple hours and can't find it.
No way to do it on the stock launcher.
Haven't found one either

I haven't found a way either. I bought my phone Thursday, the moment it was released. Prior to that, while researching some pre release reviews (I read so many, Phone Arena, Droid Life, CNET, etc etc) I ran across a review lamenting the fact that the home screen was moved to the left instead of the center, but I can't remember which site it was. I had the Home screen in the center on my 2013 Droid Maxx and then I had screens to the left and right with various themes (this is my media, music and movies screen, this is my games screen, this is my productivity, etc). The location of the Home screen on the Turbo is where I had my music, movies, and media on my Maxx. It was weird getting used to the Home screen being all the way to the left, but after a few days I'm fine with it.

If he moves the stuff on the Home screen to a different page when he hits the Home button it will take him to a page he doesn't want.

Long press on a blank part of any screen, widgets and wallpaper option appear at the bottom. At this point you can long press any of the pages and move them around.
Thanks, that's useful. But it doesn't solve the problem that pressing the "home" button takes you to the leftmost screen. It was much handier having it take me to the center screen, from which I could swipe left or right for my three main screens.

Can't be done on the Turbo, without a 3rd party launcher.

Exactly. Nova is also very fast.
Plus you can add number of screens, decide how many rows/columns of icons you want per page.
You can upload backups of your screen layout to Dropbox or email, so any future phone can have the layout you want.
Lots of stuff.
I even have a different icon theme than Kitkat, downloaded from Google store.
