HUGE ISSUE... With Lagfix and JH7 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i had JH7 working fine for 24hrs. Noticed on another forum that someone ran the tatyama lag fix and it worked fine.
I tried it and my phone did not recover. I used odin to reflash JH7 and everything came back ok, however my email settings in "account and settings" were still inputted. I went to delete them, and re-add them and I get a
cannot connect to server error message on both my exchange and direct push live accounts.
I have reflashed 3 times and I am currently on JF6, When it goes to verify the account it goes to "checking incoming server settings..." and it just hangs up and after awhile it says to Force close or wait...
or
Setup could not finish
Cannot connect to server.
Anyone experience this before? I can access a website, and setup pop email in the "email" program icon on touchwiz.
please help.
Things i have tried...
-factory reset
-format internal sd
-flashed both JF6 and JH7 same issue
-cleared cache in recover menu

i also get...
Activity (in process Email) is not responding...
I just reflashed with JF6 with PIT and Re-partition checked... no luck..
Is this an ATT issue or my phone?

Did you both try the master wipe option with the odin one click stock?

Try using the One-Click Stock Tool to flash JF6, if you're still having problems after that. Plug your phone in with Debugging turned on and run the Master Clear option. Flash once more just for the hell of it.

Yes i did do the master wipe.
I can confirm that i believe the phone has wiped everything because when i go into lbstestmode, i see all the default stock options like lcs.spri..etc... no google settings.
can someone try to add a hotmail account to their "corporate" email settings.
should be...
email
password.
server= m.hotmail.com
login= your full email
see if it gets stuck on incoming..etc
can't imagine a lagfix crapout would kill my email program to where i can't have any activesync email addresses....
just tried adding att apn manually. no dice.

I have done all of these twice.. including wiping my internal sd card as well and no external sd card in the phone.

i am able to setup a google account, facebook, and pretty much everything else.
Just the exchange email setup freezes on incoming settings screen and or won't connect to the server.

I'm having the same issue and have tried the same things, but I didn't do a lagfix.
I'm using Exchange, not Hotmail, but I have the EXACT same issues as you.
If I can get it working I'll post it here. Someone on AndroidForums is having the same issue too.
I went back to JF6 and it was having the same issues when it was working fine before JH7.

I just notice the same issue while trying to add exchange account. gonna try to flash back to JF6 and see if issue persist.

There wasn't a dedicated thread, just a reply to a post I made there: http://androidforums.com/1571516-post31.html

I had it all working fine last night with JH& and SRE 1.3
I read somewhere to NOT check the re-partiion in ODIN- that JH7 will not work unless you leave this box unchecked.

Yeah, I didn't have that checked at all

Just wanna verify with other people. It seems even after rolled back to JF6 or flash with stock kernel, the kernel version is still shown as 2.26.29 [email protected]#2. I couldn't flash unhelpful or stock kernel anymore. What's the kernel version supposed to be in JF6?

i can flash any kernel or rom and exchange setup craps out. I may have to go to ATT for an exchange

It appears that my suspisisons were correct.
IT WAS ATT!!!!!
I can add exchange accounts this morning with no issue!
going to reflash JH7 now..
argh!

Looks like its working here too. I was even trying to do it over WiFi last night though...weird.

Yep. It's working for me to. However, I didn't test again before I reflashed to i9000 JM7. Anyway, I'm happy now.

Is anyone else having this issue? I have flashed my phone to every possible combination and done the master clear but it still hangs when I go to setup my exchange settings.

I already have mine setup, but it seems to crash (FC) on occasion, so there's still an issue somewhere.

[Q] Captivate wifi stopped working even after factory reset

Good day,
As of about two days ago my Captivate (rooted, side loading enabled) would get stuck "obtaining address" when trying to hook up to wifi. It does this with my home access point as well as municipal wifi. It says "obtaining address" for about 3-5 minutes then says "could not connect" or similar.
I tried uninstalling all recent apps - no dice. I just reset my Captivate first through the settings menu and then through the volume buttons/power button method. It still is not working. Any ideas? Should I return it for another one? Since I did a total factory reset twice, I don't see how it can be a software problem... then again, I am new to Android.
Thanks, gents and ladies.
If you are within 30 days, I'd return.

Is there anything I should do besides having already reset the phone - so as not to void the warranty? The rooting and sideloading mods should be undone now, right?
Thanks for the help.
See if you can manually set an IP address. Sounds like DHCP is having issues for some reason.
Also, I am not certain but I think I remember reading that even a factory reset might leave remnant files around. Do a search (I am too lazy) and if I am right, look into wiping the phone and then reseting it.

Rooting your phone voids your warranty. Have you done a Odin one click restore back to JFS 6 stock. That should fix your issue, and if it doesn't you know you probably need to return the phone.

Is there anyway to do this without wiping the phone?
I have using this ROM for over a week, when suddenly this issue popped up today. I don't want to go through the painful process of restoring all my settings.

Just flashed cognition and com.android.phone crashes constantly

Well I just got my cappy today. I decided to install froyo, I went with cognition.
So i rooted, installed Rom manager, backed up. Installed Titanium backup. Backed up everything i didn't knew what it was. Installed cognition.
After this when it loaded it keeps giving me this error constantly and lagging the phone. Since its my first android phone I'm not sure what to do. I didn't restored anything with Titanium, though I'm not sure if this program does this automatically...
I cleared user data and cache and the error persists.
I'm currently on Ubuntu on my pc so odin is not an option. So I want to have the phone working fast, preferrably with froyo, should i download another rom and reflash with rom manager? Any ideas on what I've done wrong or why the error is displayed?
I'm very thankfull for any sort of help, premature answers are more than welcomed
Either try to get odin to work with ubuntu... Wine?
Find someone with windows PC and odin.
Dual boot xp / 7 and do it yourself
First this is NOT the area for questions per se this is for DEVELOPMENT.
I suggest you try in the General or Q&A section or in this case the Cognition thread since that is the one having issues for you.
Without ODIN I cannot recommend anything so I suggest you try the Cognition thread amigo.
Regards
Just removed my simcard and the error stopped
Does this mean the phone is no longer unlocked?
I bought the phone unlocked so I'm not sure how to restore it to the way it was. Should the unlock code still be somewhere over my phone internal memory? Any quick ideas on how to do this? Or should i look into the whole unlocking post on froyo?

Check out this thread...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778609. It involves setting up a VM(virtual machine) but that is a very easy task. I hope you find this helpful. But do not flash over Cog. You need to use Odin, flash back to stock, do a master clear and then re-flash Cog via CWM.
You prob's flashed Cognition right after the reboot forced by ClockworkRecovery, so the media scan wasn't completed, phone freaked and just lost most of its powarrrr.
Oh yeah: wrong subforum...

That sounds logic. Any ideas on what should I do so I can make the phone stop giving me this error with my simcard inside?
btw i dont know if this has anything to do but with my simcard inside i noticed 2 things
First it gets gsm signal crashes, looses the signal, regains it and this loops over and over.
After this i also noticed one service restarts over and over when this happens

This happened to me once, so I went back into recovery and used CM to reflash. My files were still on the root of the internal SD card, so I figured I'd give it a shot. It worked for me - cleared up my FC problems.

Select reinstall - hopefully it will launch the CM recovery mode. Then you can select to install from the SD card.
Just reinstalled cognition but it still has the same problem. Should i download the i9000 reoriented and try with that one to see if by any chance...?
Did you try reflashing with sim card out? Maybe a master clear would help too?
Yes the last time i tried with the simcard out. I'm guessing the phone is still unlocked, a master clear woudn't change this? If anyone can confirm this I'll try it asap.
I'm downloading as well Doc's rom 7.5 to try reflashing that instead, I can do that or I have to downgrade and then reflash?

I think the problem could be that your unlock code was deleted. When you flashed. If you can not use odin try this, find the jh7 ota update. I think you can get it from the cognition download page. Flash this it will bring you back to a 2. 1 Rom. Read up on how to unlock your phone. Unlock then copy the unlock code. Then flash cognition again and follow steps to unlock.
If you are on the newest cog make sure you disable the voodoo lagfix prior to flashing. I can not guarantee this will work but it is worth a go. If you created a nandroid prior to flashing once you are on jh7 you should be able to restore
Captivate
Cog 2.2

Cognition Q&A

Hey Guys I put together a Q&A thread for this rom to prevent tons of new threads about rom Spicific questions from new users.. Please feel free to post any questions here.
As Aslways there is no Flaming, name calling or the such.
No question is too noobish, But please look for your answer first.
Now for the info needed to help. In your post make sure to included the version of the rom you are using, modem, kernel, ext...
Also please give it some time for your question to be answered.
Thank you for setting up this thread.
I would like to add selected AT&T bloat to my Cognition 3.04 install, specifically the AT&T Hot Spots app. Without this app, I have to manually launch the browser and connect whenever I want to use WIFI at my work.
DesignGears used to have APKs for each bloat item on his Cognition page, but it seems the page does not exist. Where would I go to get this app, along with other selected bloat?
How do you stop cognition from force closing when you try to open the messaging app. I think I am restoring the wrong things on titanium backup

Are you using FB kernel?

Nevermind, fixed it
This won't work...
Here is a quick Rundown
I897 ROM (Cognition) + Stock Kernel + I897 MOdem (Stock = JL1) = BLUETOOTH WORKING (no static)
If you change the Kernel and modem to Firebird and JK4 this breaks the combination and you end up getting static. The Firebird Kernel is based off the i9000 source.
IF you want to use the Firebird Kernel, I suggestng switching to Perception which uses the i9000 source.
*This is my understanding of how this works...if I am wrong please correct me*

I do not use bluetooth for anything other than file transfers. As far as I know, Firebird does not allow for bluetooth dialing or voice.
Newbie: tell me prepare steps before flashing
Please tell me the steps I should do to a pure stock ATT Captivate before flashing Cog ROM (will probably wait for v4 which apparently DG is working on now).
I don't need (right now) the how-to-do-each step, just what to do. May have to ask later for some of the details, but I =think= I know most of the process, just have never done it yet. What I am still not clear on is the "for your safety" (e.g. backups other than Tibu), the "it's a good idea", and the "just in case" to do's.
I would like to end up after flash with all the apps I have now (except ATT bloat). Please include the apps I will need before the flash process and any that would need to be there afterward.
Oh, on ATT apps--I do use the ATT Address book at
Contacts >menu>more>Settings>ATT Address book
because the gmail sync WILL NOT send phone contacts to gmail--only the other way from gmail to phone. So, would like to keep that for backup in case of phone theft/lost. Possible?
Thanks.

Skip Step 1
Thanks, however, other than doing the root on a stock phone, that is not the BEFORE things--it is the flashing process. I was asking for things desirable to do before starting all of that (well maybe after rooting, but before the flashings).
Examples (made up)..."you should use ____ and manually copy ____ from _____ to ______." You should get ____ app and run it; copy the ____numbers from the screen and save them, or move the file it created at_____ to____.
Maybe there is nothing else that should be done, but I am sure somewhere I read something about that last part (saving some number out of the original setup).
I am trying to avoid any possibility of ending up saying, "Dang, I wish I had _____."

Other than backing up your user apps and the data related to them, there is not much else to do other than root your phone and flash the ROM. Afterwards you can restore user apps and data (but not system data) and flash a separate kernel and/or modem if you like, nut it is not generally necessary to do so. As long as the ROM you are flashing is for the phone you are flashing it on, there should not be any problems.

Once you switch to a custom ROM you will no longer be able to use ATT Phone Book... I learned this the hard way. Besides... ATT Phone book SUCKS!!! With the new ROMs... Google will sync your contacts better than ATT ever did but since you've already used ATT here' is what you'll have to do to save your contacts.
1. Go into your Contacts on the phone and click on the Menu Soft Key on the phone.
2. Look for an Import/Export feature and click on it.
3. Now Export your contacts to the SD Card. It will name the file something like: 00001.vcf
4. Now either use Drop Box or connect your phone to PC and save the file.
5. Login to Gmail and use the import feature. Click on it and look for the file you just saved and select it. Gmail should now have all your Contacts.
6. Now you are ready to do whatever you want with your phone with no fear in ever losing your contacts,
7. That I'm aware off... once you use a Custom ROM Froyo and above Gmail will sync both ways. You'll just need to select in on the sync and contact menu.
8. From the home screen... click on the Menu Soft Key and go into settings. Look for "Accounts and sync" and click on it. Add your Google account and allow it to "Auto Sync" and "Background data."
9. Now go back to your Contacts and once again go into the Menu Mode. Click on "More" down arrow and click on "Settings".
10. In there you should see a "Save New Contacts to" Click on it and choose Google.
11. Your all done... from now on your phone will keep your Contacts in sync with Google Account even when you add a new one on the phone.
Note: In "Display options" under the Contact Menu... I have mine to only show Contacts on my phone with Phone Numbers only and to only show Contacts from Google. This avoids Repeats or a crap load of email only contacts being shown on my Phone list.
Hope this helps you or anyone else not wanting to lose there Contacts... I had to learn the hard way the first time when I found out ATT sync wouldn't work anymore. It Sucks anyways in comparison to Google Sync since ATT doesn't even allow you to export Contacts from there site.
Thanks you very much for that--very clearly expressed and complete.
Agree the ATT sync is not great, but since Google sync was not taking them, I had to save them somewhere....thus the ATT.
Hmmmm....on Item 4 about Dropbox: I guess I don't know how to make the mobile version work.
I put the vcf file into a folder I made called "nonpublic." It shows on the phone, but is not appearing in the Dropbox account either online or on my laptop.
I don't see a sync button or anything in the menu button, so how do you get things in dropbox folders on the phone to sync to the other places?
LATER: Installed OI File Manager (recommended in a Dropbox document I found) and was able to make it work. In Dropbox on the phone, you have to use menu and command an upload ("Any file"), then it lets you start your file manager, you drill to the file, and upload it into dropbox server; then it syncs. A bit complicated and not immediately obvious--but it is quite a useful capability.
So. Question. Nobody (to my knowledge) has made a one-click-flash-Cognition-to-your-phone-nice-neat-package deal yet...right? I mean, I've been looking at these forums for a while out of curiosity, and I [think] I can handle it through the various methods, but I do feel comfortable with everything settled in one click (or as few clicks and presses as needed). Maybe I'm just scared of unleashing the true potential. IDK. Thoughts? Redirections? Beatings?

[Q] Not the same Captivate after Advanced App Killer

I installed Advanced App Killer last night and now my Captivate has me captive. I was able to get 2 phone calls today and after the second one, my home screen doesn't show when I press the power button. When I call the number it rings until my voicemail comes on but the phone shows no signs of life. When I reboot by taking that battery out, it will boot and the screen will appear up until it scans for the SD card. Then the screen goes blank and I can't get it to come on. I recently installed SpeedMOD k13C and I have SetCPU installed. At this point all I want is a working phone.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
1) If you can get into recovery mode use adb pull to back up any important data (photos, etc) to your computer.
2) Try to boot into download mode, flash stock and see if the phone works.
3) If you can't get into download mode try a jig, if that doesn't work I don't know what to tell you.
Edit: Oh yeah, and don't bother with app/task killers, they're pretty much useless and tend to cause more problems then they're worth.

Stop using all task killers.
Stop using SetCPU.
Check the build number of ur phone. If its 10.09 or earlier, u can use odin 1 click. If later, do NOT use odin 1 click. Search on how to make/use a JIG on these forums.
But before u do anything like odin, pls let us know the build number.

3) If you can't get into download mode try a jig, if that doesn't work I don't know what to tell you.
Edit: Oh yeah, and don't bother with app/task killers, they're pretty much useless and tend to cause more problems then they're worth.

Thanks for your help. I was finally able to have the screen up long enough to uninstall Advanced App Killer. Now it seems to be working fine although people tell me that I don't sound clear on the phone. Any thoughts on that?
Thanks!

That sounds like a modem issue to me, which one are you using? I'm using the UGJK4 modem myself. The other ones I've tried resulted in staticy (sp?) voice calls for the other person.
Herp derp Captivate XDA app.
How can I tell what modem I'm using? I recently flashed with SpeedMOD K13C. Is there any other info you need?
Thanks.

Can I use that UGJK4 modem on a Captivate?
A different modem might do it. There's a thread with a ton of them: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272
I'm currently using JK4 on my Captivate, as it's the default in the ROM I'm using, Paragon. Working well so far.
Let this be a lesson to people who want to install a Task Killer. The most recent Android versions handle memory management quite well, and killing apps yourself is harmful to the OS.
There were several stories this week about malware infecting android devices this week through a number of legitimate apps installed from the market. I would search and make sure you didn't download any of these apps. The behaviors you were describing are very similar to phones infected. They where able to access your account and send messages to pay sites and caused other havoc. Even if you feel your phone is running fine now, it wouldn't hurt to check on it. I installed an antivirus app two weeks ago and it scans every app I install before I save it to my phone. Just a thought

It seems that ROM Manager does that for some reason since you probably have 3e recovery which doesn't allow you to flash unsigned files. Try booting into recovery manually and trying it from there. When the phone is off hold down vol up/down and power buttons. This worked for me.

[Q] Phone is wigging out, need techsperts help.

Hi guys,
I have been searching the forums for 2 weeks now trying to fix this myself, but I have put my pride in my pocket and am asking for help.
Backstory: Rooted phone, flashed CWM, used tons of custom froyo ROM's (doc roms mainly) and most recently Darky's 9.3 (awesome).
But then i decided I wanted Gingerbread (this is where the trouble began). Gingerbread worked just fine, but as there is no custom roms, I flashed back to 2.2 (obviosly screwed something up), because since then I have been plagued with process com.whatever.android.somethingelse has stopped unexpectedly. please try again.
please don't ask which force close message I am getting, lets just say, I am pretty sure I am getting them all!
I have flashed stock 2.1, custom 2.1, stock 2.2, custom 2.2's, I even went back to gingerbread a few times trying to fix this ***** of a problem. I tried re partitioning just the .pit file and then the other 3 files seporatly. NOTHING WORKS.
So, I am calling out to all you guys and girls who are heaps smarter than me to please help. the phone functions, turns on, make or receive calls and texts (not mms), emails work sometimes, but if I turn the phone off and on all the settings are wiped and I need to reload all the user details.
Oh, I should also add another major issue, I cannot use the internal memory for anything, I cannot take pictures unless I select the external SD card, I cannot install apps from market or .apk. I cannot even move data to it when its mounted on the pc.
I am completely lost. please help me.
And thanks in advance.
I
C'mon guys, I know there is a lot to read, but please, can no-body help me?
Sounds like it might be a dead internal sd card. You said you tried a re-partition with 3 file firmware? That should fix pretty much anything. I think your only option is to return to samsung at this point.

Thanks for the response.
is it possible to fix myself?
As Samsung will not cover it, even if I flash the stock Telstra ROM, it will still show that it has been rooted?
In doing your research, I'm sure you've heard of the internal SD problems that plague the i9000, are you by chance with Bell Mobility? This line concerns me..
"Oh, I should also add another major issue, I cannot use the internal memory for anything"
When I experienced multiple FCs (force closes) and incompatible system UID's, I tried flashing every kind of ROM there was with every kind of PIT file as well to no avail. However, one in particular worked for me and others. It is usually referred to as a full ROM. It contains the .csc and .sbl in it as well as the usual ROM contents.
The ROM I used is called FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar. Note, flashing this ROM with a pit file (be it 512, 513, or 803) wouldn't help me at all. What fixed the problem was flashing ONLY the ROM file in ODIN. Unfortunately, I can't find the thread where I found this ROM. I suggest searching around for it, if you can't find it PM me, and I will up it somewhere for you.
I'm not sure if this will help with your specific case, but its worth a shot. Also, wherever applicable, do a factory reset, clear your cache, and a full wipe install.
Good luck.
[edit]
Do a complete wipe and install with a stock 2.2 or 2.1 ROM in ODIN, there will be no evidence of a root.

Thanks for this dude, I will start my search for that rom.
I do a factory reset, wipe cache and data every time, however after doing all of that and flashing a new rom, it still has my google account details in the phone?? this is wierd, as I factory reset from recovery mode AND wipe all data from within the phone? Any suggestions?
Edit: and no, its is an Australian Telstra i9000

I am using odin, this is the wierd part. I have tried repartitioning, not repartitioning, I have tried 512.pt 803.pit, full wipe and reset from both in the phones settings and recovery mode. reboot it, go through settup wizzard (which eventually force closes requiring me to reboot), go into accounts and there is my google account still set up???
Edit: also, I cannot find a file called FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar, I am downloading i9000UGJH2.tar as we speak, but i doubt it is the one you were reffering to, if you are able to point in in the right direction, that would be ace.
Cheers

If you're entering your gmail address in during the setup wizard, our google account will be linked. If you're not setting anything up and it is remembering your info, then something is definitely fishy.
I would flash back to a stock rom, and see what Samsung or your provider can do for you. In all honesty, the only thing I would be able to suggest is flashing and wiping
[edit]
When you download that ROM, open it up (using a program like WinRAR). The point of a full rom is that it contains
-cache.rfs
-dbdata.rfc
-factoryfs.rfs
-modem.bin
-param.lfs
-sbl.bin
-zimage
I'm unsure of any incompatibilities between the Canadian and Australian versions, but I will upload my copy for you to try.

I'm not entering any info during the setup wizard?
could it be something to do with the file system gingerbread uses? these issues only started when I went back from gingerbread to froyo? (and before you ask, I have tried going back to gingerbread with no solution)
I may have to bite the bullet and shoot it back to Samsung... or just buy another one! would love to try FULL-i9000UGJH2.tar if you could remember where you got it?
Thanks again for your help.
Cheers,

I seem to have remembered it being in this thread, which is why i had it on bookmark, but I'm not sure if the link has been removed or if i had been mistaken since I can no longer find it. I'm uploading for you to Rapidshare, where you can download as a free user...~30 mins . Again, I'm not sure if there are modem incompatibilities or not since this I am in Canada, and you are in Australia.
Another place to check may be here...

The way you're referring to accessing this internal SD....are you flashing your ROMs to an external microsd card?
Here is the full UGJH2 that I flashed (with no other options) that saved me.

No, by accessing my SD, i mean being able to download ansd install apps (and things like that). also, just tried to remove my google (gmail) account from my phone, and it wouldn't let me, it keeps force closing.
Thanks for the upload mate, I really appreciate it, currently downloading it, will let you know.
Cheers again.

Hey mate, no go, i got some functionality back on the phone, but still force closes and I cannot save anything to SD (or install apps).
another email account (an exchange server account) that was previously deleted has appeared back set up and working (I have not been able to set this up for a week), it appeared on its own which leads me to think there is a hidden partition on my internal sd, hence I cannot access it. must be something to do with Gingerbread.
Thanks for all your help though.

Edit: It just completely crashed again, force closes just about everything that is open, phone functionality is gone (phone icon vanished) as did contacts. freezes for a couple of minutes and then reboots. i may have to throw it at a wall!
I cannot find anything about the gingerbread partition that would cause problems with froyo. damn this thing!!!

Hi mate,
I have tried that several times, i think there is a hidden partition thanks to Gingerbread.
I would be sure that your internal sd card is screwed but since everything worked fine before gingerbread something else has probably happened. Also your data wont delete and that seems to be the source of the problem. Try to install the lagfix from k13d and see if it had any results. This should reformat all partitions on the internal sd.
