[Q] Question about Odin - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I apologize if this is the wrong place to post this. Can someone explain the basics of what PDA/PHONE/CSC are? Right now by dialing *#*#1234#*#* I get:
PDA: i897UCJF6
PHONE: i897UCJH3
CSC: i897ATTJF6
I flashed the JH3 ROM from JF6 using the PDA option, was that correct? Also, can someone explain the proper way to flash with Odin? Thanks in advance.

I realize development isnt the best area for this, but i would be interested in an ‘idiots guide’ to odin, etc. As well.
Ive moded android phones before but it hasn’t been with odin

+1 the stickied Odin thread is not very detailed on what you're actually doing when you use the program.

+1 This would be nice

+10000
I have flashed WM thousands of times...android is a whole different monster and ODIN seems like such a shoddy program...no one ever puts a tutorial in their rom threads and I end up spending hours reading just to make sure I have everything set...
And am I the only one that has to run odin liek 30 times before it actually takes? Even the 1 click restore odin takes me several times pulling the battery for it to even start loading...

I hate to bump this, but could someone at least explain what PDA/PHONE/CSC are?

If you clicked PDA in odin and pointed to the right ucjh3, you should be on jhs pda AND modem, i think, though i don't believe there's much difference. As for explanation, see below....

Ok, I'll try to explain:
Odin - PDA=Kernel - The brain or core
- Phone:= modem - self explanatory
- CSC = Carrier specific options - usually ignore this
Most of the time, the package you download is all-in-one, which would go in the PDA box. It basically "wipes" the existing system (not data, like your music and stuff) and installs whatever you tell it to. In other words, stock is UCJF6. The "leaked" newer firmwares are jh2, jh3 and jh7. They are complete files. To upgrade to the jh3 for instance, you would download it, unzip the zip so that it was now showing as a .tar, and point odin PDA to it. Then connect phone in d/l mode and click start in odin when it says added. It will reprogram the firmware and reboot, at which time you close odin and disconnect cable. You have just flashed!

[Q] Question for Flashing

hi i just downloaded the JH3 firmware and was wondering how to flash. I know i have to use Odin but what about after that can anyone give me a step by step? and the odin im using is not the one click download im using Odin3_v1.0.exe it has 8 white boxes on top
ALL THE TOP STUFF IS ANSWERED TY.
But if i do flash will i lose all my stuff on my phone like contacts music pictures etc
Did you even bother to search? There are multiple threads ands stickies about this already.
yes i did search but i didnt find what im looking for and the sticky u r talking about in the dev section is for the one click one it does answer what im asking
The info is in the dev section but here are the simple steps.
Preperation
1)Enable debugging mode if you want to use adb reboot download
1a) make sure you know how to get into download mode
Steps
1) Open Odin and install the 512 pit in the pit section and the .tar in the pda section
2)plug phone into computer with cable
3)get phone to download mode
4)Start
All should go well, if you get a fail make sure you look at your process because it should work just fine this way.
thank you flashman but if i do flash to jh3 will i lose my all my stuff like contacts?
edit:
and the pit file you are talking about is the one at the bottom of the page where you download the firmware right

search the market for UiA backup contacts, and you can back up all your contacts to a .vcf file on your SD card.
I didnt lose any pictures or music, but its always best to back them up just in case something goes wrong and you have to format.

Yes it should be the one that says 512 pit. You will need to use that when you flash JH3. Just use Kies to back up your contacts or use gmail, but you shouldnt really have any issues.
ok i got my contacts and media backed up and after that i plan on doing SRE is there anything i should know

Nope, just read the threads that are in the dev section so you know what to do in case anything happens, or just so you have the understanding of what is going on with your phone.

[TUT] Flash baseband and ONLY baseband

This will do nothing other than changing your baseband, nothing else will change and you can do it with whatever ROM you have installed, custom or stock.
1. Get the latest ROM for your region, the simplest way to do that is to use CheckFusDownloader which you can find here: http://fus.nanzen.se/
Start the program and choose firmware, phone (GT-S5570) and region on the right side, then click check firmware on the left side, finally click download and save it to c:\baseband.
2. Get Cygwin here: http://www.cygwin.com/
Install Cygwin (you don't need to change anything if you don't want to, just let setup run it's course until it's installed) and start the Cygwin terminal.
In cygwin, type:
Code:
cd /cygdrive/c/baseband
tar -xvf [filename of your downloaded ROM] amss
tar -H ustar -c amss > MODEM_S5570.tar
For example, if the filename of the ROM you downloaded with CheckFusDownloader is S5570XWKQG_S5570XWKQ5_S5570OXFKQ6_HOME.tar.md5 then you'd type:
Code:
cd /cygdrive/c/baseband
tar -xvf S5570XWKQG_S5570XWKQ5_S5570OXFKQ6_HOME.tar.md5 amss
tar -H ustar -c amss > MODEM_S5570.tar
Once you're done with that you have a baseband file in your C:\baseband directory called MODEM_S5570.tar that you can flash as one package using Odin.
Remember that basebands are intercompatible so just pick the one that is for your region.
And no, no custom rom will care about it regardless of what they say.
Hi
this seems cool trick but to what I understand it gets the baseband out from a downloaded firmware (please correct me if wrong)
Would it be possible to just extract the basesband from the phone?
thanks
Sorry sir I don't get it
Is this just change the baseband I mean just the appearance In about phone or change the system too?

No, it will change the baseband in the phone as in replace your current baseband.
The baseband controls GSM/GPRS/G3/GPS settings which means that if you flash a ROM for another region than your own you might run into problems with all or some of those. For example, i can't remember how many posts i have read on this forum about GPS problems when people have flashed a ROM that isn't for their region.
You can use this procedure to fix that problem, just flash the baseband for your region and it will work fine on ANY ROM, custom or stock.
Basically, it's a universal fix to a problem that some people have.

so from as per the details above I assume we cannot extract the baseband from the phone?

Nope, you'd need the block area on the phone where it's stored and dd it.
this is for flashing basebands on roms available and if your rom isn't it's because it's old, just use the checkfusdownloader to get the most recent and you'll be fine with that.
I thought i made it all clear in the first post.

I am sure you must have made it clear, only may b I did not understand clearly, and sorry I still do not get this how to do it.
Lets say I got the brand new phone and nothing has been modified, how do I take the baseband out from the PHONE for future use in case if I need to restore the baseband in future.
So anyways, if it is possbile to get it out of the PHONE, please explain it in details how do I do it, sorry I am quite new to this thats why.
thanks my friend.

You don't, you download the latest ROM for your region with checkfusdownloader and use the rest to get whatever baseband you want INTO the phone.
If you already have the correct baseband for your region, why would you change it, if you have the wrong one, you replace it using the method in the OP.
It is possible, but i am not going to spend the time researching blocks to find it, so either you do that yourself for no reason what so ever, or you go with another amss from the same rom that you have which IS THE SAME BASEBAND.
It's not phone unique, it's unique to every region and you can find it or an updated version using the tool i referenced in the OP, if you cannot, your phone doesn't exist or at least Samsung haven't produced that phone.
I am not sure how to make this any more clear than that.

Now it is quite clear to me, thanks.
The only reason I wanted to get one out from my phone was that, the things seem quite ok with the phone so my baseband is quite ok, but in other rom (for my region) if it is an updated one and if there are some better features or removed bugs (unknown to me) then I would install it through your method. But after installing new one if I find that my old baseband was working better than this new one, I would not have chance to put the old one back. So was the reason to backup the baseband from the phone just in case new one does not work good for me.
But as you have made it understood quite clear, thanks for this, really appreciated your help.

Ok, the point of this thread was to provide the TOOL (checkfusdownloader) and the WAY(the explained extraction and compilation of one file that will work.
I still don't get why you don't just use that information.
You CAN use even old basebands found via checkfusdownloader.
If you don't get how to use it, just say so because this seems a bit... puckered with nada.
WELL done Jinxxed I will try it right now.
but i have a query, suppose that i have the suitable firmware for my device, can i just extract the csc file from the package and grab the ops file, then load and flash them via odin?

Wait, why would you flash the CSC, this tutorial is for flashing baebadn without ANYTHING else affected.
And that is what the procedure does, it just changes your baseband without chanign ganything else.
You can pretty much flash any file this way, including recovery or what have you.
So yeah, whatever firmware you want, with whatever baseband you need, this is how you do it.

To answer this as the question is in need of answer.
Yes, you can do that with any rom file in any way you wish except for the boot, img and the arm11 file, just don't mess with those.
If yo REALLY want to, i can tell you how but at that point you'll want more than one phone per person.
my bad I mean the amss file that contains baseband and related stuff
since you had gently answered that is doable via ODIN, so what about the ops file should i leave it as he is.
sorry to bother you mate, and thanks again

My wife died tonight.
YOu can use the regular way of flashing it or just electing out one part in the tass and flash it.
Now everyone will be wary of it because i made a mistake.. .it's not really a problem, you just comment out the line you won't use. i'll bet my left ball on that.
That said, i've experienced a lot lately, so bear with me if i'm slow but expect everything exactly correct.
I'm going to be offline for a while now, my wife died today.

Flash via Odin as one package with the normal ops, the same ops file that we have been using to flash stock ROMs, in Download mode as always.. now, only do this if you already have a custom ROM.. It will not wipe any data but it is recommended to do a nandroid backup just in case something goes wrong.. Check About Phone, Baseband Version to see the changes..
question
if i have 2.3.6 xwktn, can i use 2.3.6 dxkpd as my baseband? thanks.

[Q] How to root galaxy note GT-N7000BDULB3 version

Hello xda developers
I am wondering if someone can answer a few questions i have about rooting my samsung note?
I'm in Australia and just got my note with vodafone on Saturday. I have been doing some searching in the dev section and I haven't found my kernel version (2.6.35.7-N7000BDULB3-CL977082) to download from dr.ketan I have also searched for it on sammobile.com with no luck also.
So from the above statement does anyone know where i can get a copy of it from or know how i can backup mine from my phone atm?
I have found a root solution however It is for the GT-N7000 model which is at rootgalaxynote.com/galaxy-note-root/how-to-root-galaxy-note-gt-n7000-method-2odinheimdall
If I followed this above method would I end up bricking the phone as the phone version are different? I found nothing on a search when comparing the two
Sorry for an the essay of a post too.
Looks like you're the only guy in the whole wide world with the exotic N7000BDULB3 GB, mate.
https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=N7000BDULB3&sourceid=opera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
Anyway, you can always flash and root and older Rom, then upgrade to whatever you want whilst keeping your root. Here's a little guide to downgrading and rooting I wrote some time ago, hope it helps.
You'll have a rooted KK9 rom after you're done. Then you can download any new GB version (LC1 is the latest) from here and flash it with Mobile Odin, with Everroot and Inject Superuser options ticked. That will keep your root.
Good luck.

Thanks so much, and your posts are one of the easiest to follow and gives a great head start for noobs! Great Job really!
I used this method and now I see a yellow triangle.
1. Will this yellow triangle during boot up, disappear if I follow your unroot method?
2. Will my phone can be updated to ICS once Samsung officially provides upgrade to ICS for Galaxy Note?
3. I tried SetCPU, the phone became very hot, when I over clocked and it just hang. I brought it back to normal.
4. What are all the other useful, important things we can do after root, other than installing Titanium Backup etc.

With the KKA firmware when extracted I get the 2 files like you said the .tar.md5 and the dll file.
In odin do i just select the .tar.md5 file under the pda option? or do i have to put the dll file in an option as well.

and i don't know if this is Soft or full brick but i get stuck at Firmware Upgrade encountered a issue, Kies does not help in it when i type the cellphone info into that option, it gives me a error so no way through kies. i didn't do any way yet to try to save it i'm really unsure what to do i checked really a bunch of different posts so its really confusing, i really get in panic when stuff like this happens so forgive me, i hope anyone can help in somehow, also, if better i need to save it in a way without having to wipe my stuff because most of my apps data are in the phone, but i dont mind if theres no other way than using wiping in one of the steps.
i don't really know how to follow if you link me over a thread so its better if you post the explanation here.

You must do factory reset when you go from GB to JB. That is why you get a bootloop probably.
So to make it short situations is like this:
1. You had problem with Kies
2. Tried with Odin and got force close of odin in Windows?
3. Retry with Kies with same ending
So what Windows do you use? Do you use 8? I read some had problem with Odin and 8.x. Did you use Odin 3.0.x?

Yeah, forced closed odin 2 times, kies like stopped and disconnected everything on 69% leaving only the android on downloading screen but that didnt brick it, i use windows 7, odin 3.09 only gave me fails so i used 3.07 where it got stuck on nand thing.
also, any ways to backup things even though the thing is bricked? i can go to download mode fine and i think i can go into recovery too (never tried it on this phone)

Your internal data (on internal SD) will be there, but Factory reset will delete your apps and its data.
Or try to flash GB with ODIN and see what happens.

It is probably soft, you can go to Odin. Way to unbrick it is to flash stock firmware with Odin - like you did. Find GB firmware and flash it with odin like you did.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1985398
If your phone is I9070 then use firmware for I9070, if it is I9070P use I9070P firmware. If you miss this you will hardbrick phone, and not be able to use Download mode.
And do not use Hong Kong firmware.
sammobile.com and samsung-updates.com are sites where you can find firmwares.
You were on custom ROM when you did update with Kies?

Use region next to you, I am using Italian and I am from Serbia. I do not know if you will get nand write error, you should not get it in first place. Maybe something is wrong with it...

I am not 100% sure about that. Maybe try other ODIN versions. But I used 3.0.7 without problem. Search for nand write problem to see what is it about.
P.S. Redownlaod firmware maybe, is it the same size as shown on the page when you started download?

I am not sure if that method formats internal storage. And if you get adb shell you could do it with command or with total commander with adb plugin (for that go to my profile, to all threads I started and you will see one about it).

Odin. Like you did now, just with JB firmware for your I9070 model (P or non P, if you miss that you will hard brick, for example if you flash P firmware on non P phone, and otherwise).
Just follow this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1985398
Simple as - put firmware in PDA, hit flash. And check if you have unchecked/checked as it is written there.
Probably Kies was the problem, because that nand write error. He messed up, and now this fixed it.

hey everyone...this is my first post on xda, i need a little help with my sisters in laws phone. basically shes got some crazy ex who has rooted her phone and im trying to fix it for her since hes making her life difficult. i can tell he has a custom bootloader installed. when i boot into recovery its odin not the normal bootloader. i can still boot into download mode but the phone wont boot up...when it does it just says that the firmware update encountered a problem and to use kies in recovery. im not super technically saavy but have flashed a tablet or too. nothing major. any help would be greatly appreciated. i just want this thing back to stock bootloader and firmware like when it came from att. does that sound like its possible. i tried to use some write ups i found online to rewrite the stock firmware and thats when it quit booting up. thanks in advance for any help people!

Grab ye file from step for and follow instructions. If she is rooted then this will work. It'll take her back to 4.4.2 unrooted.

Thanks for taking the time to help with this issue. that file didnt work, i flashed the G900A_OC4_Stock_Partitions firmware and its at least working again. thanks again to everyone who looked and especially dirtydodge for taking time.
Phone is working again guys but was wondering if anyone knows why it keeps giving me this security notice pop up...says that unauthorized actions have been detected and gives me the option to restart or cancel. Sounds like it has something to do with KNOX from my searching. Trying to solve this without rooting. When i check the KNOX counter in D/L mode it says 0x0. Ive updated firmware and security updates to latest versions and it hasnt helped. Anyone have any pointers? As always any help is greatly appreciated. Searched around the web and xda and didnt find what i was looking for.
@wigglesrewind. Chances are is that the phone is still rooted and that's why your getting the notification. Go to the pay store and download "root checker" and see what it says. Also what is your version & baseband. I'm not sure why the "downgrade to nce" file didn't work for you. It might have been a bad download but you should be able to use it if your still on 0C4.
Thanks again dirtydodge for contributing. I did a check with root checker and it says root is not installed. Also used terminal emulator and get a dollar sign in the terminal, not the hash tag. Any ideas?

I'm not familiar with terminal emulator. The only time I've ever gotten the notification that you talking about is when i have root apps on the phone and certain things aren't froze. But you need to be rooted and have titanium backup to freeze them. What version is on the phone.
Sorry, forgot to add that in the last post...
Baseband version oc4
Kernel 3.4.0
Build number LRX21T.G900AUCU4BOF3
Let me know if you need any other info. Like i said im not very experienced in this

Ok well it sounds like your on the latest firmware version. The phone may still have a trace of root somewhere. After you flashed the oc4 Kernel did you do a factory reset. Other than that I'm not sure what to do. But that does explain why you can't use the "downgrade to nce" file. The oc4 build can not be downgraded. I'd do a factory reset from the stock recovery menu and then wipe the cache. If that don't fix it then I'm out of options. Lol. Hope this helps.
Ive tried everything you mentioned except wiping the cache so I'll give that a try. Cross your fingers for me!
you flashed oc4 firmware which is why your baseband is oc4 (baseband is modem.)
What you need to do is download and odin a full odin tar file.. this will wipe everything clean and make it brand new...
Sent from my SM-G925V using XDA Free mobile app
If i were to find a full tar file would i just use the ap box in odin or would i have to do it differently? Usually those full dowloads have multiple files in them (BL and whatever the other ones are... CS maybe? Cant remember and not near the computer right now. Is that what your talking about?

Yup.. youre build is of3 or w.e which to my knowledge not downgradeable.. if you dont plan on keeping it rooted then you can flash latest full tar in odin using the AP slot..
I would recommend trying the oc full tar first if you plan on rerooting it.. the full tar will have multiple files including system, csc, boot etc.

Thanks alot! I'll find a full tar on here and odin it and see if that fixes it
does anyone have that oc4 one click file or know where i can find it. see it in my searchs but its always the same google drive share and they all say the file doesn't exist.
