[Q] Flashing to JM7 from JF6 - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all im trying to flash my captivate to JM7. At the moment im using the method i got from this thread (JM7 realease on i9000 page 4) I flashed without the pit file.
I actually have several questions 1. When i start my phone its starts up like it crashed with different colors then to att boot screen, is that normal.
2. Im trying to install SRE rom to it but when i try to launch it from recovery gives me a error status 7.
3. And ultimately am i doing something wrong for my phone, or is there a better guide with files im missing. Thank you.

Right under your nose...and you shouldn't flash sre(a captivate rom made for captivate firmwares) to the I9000 firmware
Edit: Just post if you got more questions about the progress. And im pretty sure that you can just substitute the jm5 for the jm7

The link appears to be broken. How does the phone perform with the Tab's rom? Does it lag? That seems almost impossible for the Tab's rom to work on the Vibrant since the screen is much larger. Did you use screen density? Anyways thanks for your finding.

Are you serious? o_0
Galaxy Tab firmware on Galaxy S? Nice.
If everything on screen is too big then try getting an app called "LCD Density Changer", which can change the dpi setting in build.prop and therefore Android can scale down the UI. The default is 240, I set mine to 180 to fit more informations on screen
Why is it not working?
this must mean that any themes or roms built for the tmobile tab can be used on the vibrant. it would be nice to find it working better since its a few hundred bucks more expensive than our devices. but that really doesnt mean that the programmers get paid better for one more than the other. i hope to see some good outcomes from all of this. thanks op
I'm downloading...who had try? full functionally on vibrant?

this a joke?

I'd have a hard time flashing something like this even if a well known dev posted it.
and this guy only has 6 posts, all of which are useless.
Nothing comes up anywhere else (Google or xda) about anyone getting the tab software to work on a vibrant.
My advise to everyone is to be careful what you flash, unless your ready to deal with the consequences.
just my .02

does your phone boot up at all?
If it does, then your good to go.
if not you'll have to Odin back to stock.
I'd recommend Eugene's froyo that doesn't brick, then back to stock just as a precautionary. I doubt this rom actually installed at all, but in the off chance that it did, flashing Eugenes froyo would probably be the safest route.
thanks men i try no working i read odin faill ican help me please
Seems kinda weird putting tab stuff on a Vibrant? Or am I missing something.

If you can use odin then just odin back to stock and start over clean.
be careful what you flash to your phone.
Yea, This is just a joke. Though in reality the tab is just a big gal s
Would be quite funny if it worked
We are all lab rats!!!
Ok, ,i am a pro at fixing problems so I got back to the stock rom in no time, but I must say this guy had a idea to flash odin3 a galaxy tab rom to a vibrant phone and posted it here with his fingers crossed hopeing that one of us xda lab rats would hit success flashing it. OMG!

well yes i acctually own a n1 and am obssessed with roms. right now im still trying to get myself familiarized with the sgs. which is kinda confusing coz of all the numbers.
iam on darky's 9.2. its alright but looking for a stock one right now so that i can customized it myself to my liking.
heres specifically what i wanna do right now:
- flash a stock 2.2.1 rom deodexed
- apply kernel (voodoo or speedmonk)
- lagfix (not sure if it depends what kernel
- all from cwm no odin. (bad experience) lol
and from there on thats where ill start from. right now thats all i wanna do.
thank you for your reply sir.
Okay on a pc here is the link

I have done lots of customisation with this rom and use it on a daily basis hope it helps you.

Anyone have the link to the stock froyao 2.2 official?

that's 2.1
for some reason nobody posted a 2.2 kb1 stock rom. all us americans are too obsessed with flashing i9000 roms or heavily modded roms. the only way to kb1 stock on this board is flash 2.1 and use kies mini to update, assuming you havent messed anything up that will prevent kies from recognising the phone like info in the efs partition.
oh right... i get confused by your damn numbers... kb1...
we had JI2 (2.1.1) and JL1 (2.2)
you know how long it took me to hunt that wrong one down?

I thought I saw a cappy stock ROM 2.2 on here when I soft bricked (I use a vibrant). They had all of them plus pre rooted versions and everything. Ill try to find it and post a link.

Here is a link. Just use the file as PDA and use your standard pit and you should flash back to stock 2.2. No problems reported either.

Here is another one..more of the same I suppose. Both are froyo stock though, and I'm pretty confident either will work. This one definitively says use 512 pit and use the tar file you download as the pda.

I used this one to upgrade from stock 2.1 to stock 2.2 using Heimdall a while back with no problems to speak of. The phone ended up developing the same lag as 2.1 eventually so I have since gone with one of the many lagfixed roms.

Flashing a gingerbread ROM?

Hi, I've had my vibrant for quite a while it's been rooted ever since day 1. However I just got got Clockwork Mod working on stock 2.2 KA6. I'm now ready to flash a 2.3or 2.3.4 ROM and I wanted to know how do I go about it. I not sure if I can just flash over the stock 2.2 or not. I also hope I wouldn't have to resort to ODIN, as every one of my last several experiences with it was not good at all. Someone please help me out!
Read the first post of the rom you want to flash. This should answer your questions. You do not need to odin before flashing any gb roms that I am aware of. Just remember you can't go back to froyo without doing odin. (also this belongs in q&a or general). Good luck!

yes u can go from froyo to gb. maybe all of the gb roms that are around explicitly say that u can and how to. it is easy, there are youtube videos on how to do it. About odin, I try to use it every time I change rom, it has never given me any trouble or problem, you just gotta have the right files.
maybe this post should go on another forum though..
only a year old and already so grown up...my my how the time has flown by in the vibrant section. no flaming or "WRONG SECTION" comments...nice work guys
they grow up so fast :'-)

Coming from Froyo - Clear my confusion please?

Hi.
Before I spam up more of the ROM threads I figured I'd better make a thread.
I'm at 2.2.1 with Voodoo Lagfix and Soundfix Kernel right now.
I want to upgrade to Gingerbread or one of the more functional ICS Roms.
Now in all the threads about them I don't see anything about Bootloaders, Firmware and so on.
My Question:
What do I have to flash and in what order?
I figured bootloader>firmware>ROM+RADIO?
Will the old ROM(2.2.1) work with the new bootloader?
The situation is kind of bad since my phone is my only source for internet right now, so KIES for basic stock upgrading is out of question.
I want to reconfigure my apps and all that stuff anyway so a backup will of course be done but is not necessary.
Thanks for reading and maybe some other people coming from 2.2.1 or lower will also find help here.

use the above link .. be sure to click on update bootloader .. as you are coming from froyo rom to GB rom so you need GB bootloader.. rest of the odin settings will be as shown in the video in the link
Thanks for your reply.
I hope you don't missunderstand me but I don't want to just follow a tutorial, I want to know what I am doing.
And this tutorial is basically telling me "use that PIT and that PDA" and boom.
But what about the bootloader? Does this change the Kernel?

.pit file contains the information of how to partition your space, if you choose .pit file in odin, you'll have to click repartition otherwise its not needed..
for details about all file types you can just google...
The guy in video didn't check bootloader because he was flashing from a GB rom only.. when you are coming from a froyo rom, you'll have to check the bootloader option as it'll be required to run GB rom otherwise you may end up in a boot loop..
The kernel that comes with the rom will be flashed... so the kernel you have now will change

Yes, it's possible and the same procedure as with any GB ROM. Important is that most ICS ROM's are still in beta, nobody can and will guarantee anything.
Sorry, you can but you need the GB Bootloaders
