Those of you that want to get rid of the Touchwiz calendar for the AOSP variety can download these two files.
Just download to your computer and put in the root of your main directory.
connect your device via usb
adb push c:\Calendar.apk /sdcard
adb push c:\CalendarProvider.apk /sdcard
adb shell
su
mount -t rfs -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl9 /system
busybox cp /sdcard/Calendar.apk /system/app
busybox cp /sdcard/CalendarProvider.apk /system/app
cd /system/app
rm TouchWizCalendarProvider.apk
rm TouchWizCalendar.apk
exit
adb reboot
On reboot they will be there. I did this without any issues. Enjoy.
Display isn't quite right but its still much better than the touch wiz one.
Hmm. I don't know if I did something wrong but My calendar is completely gone, AOSP, Touchwiz, or otherwize. Would you mind pulling the stock APK& ODEX files and sharing them here for me?
TIA
Am I doing something wrong here. I reflashed my phone back to factory and did this again, step by step copying/pasting what you put and I have no calendar. Hmmm.
Did you reboot?
You have to reboot or the change never loads.
You also may need a deodexed rom something I haven't released yet but will be soon. That would be the only other difference. Maybe ill release it tonight depending on how things go.
All the odex and deodexed apks can be downloaded here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773142
Yes I rebooted every time after I copied it over. I tried it again just copying the files over into the system/app folder without deleting hte TouchWiz calendar and it still would not show up.
Must be the deodexed framework then. I should have the rom finished tonight depending on how things go.
Yeah same problem here with the calendar not showing up. Root Explorer shows Calendar.apk and CalendarProvider.apk are both in /system/app like they should be, but they don't appear in the list of apps and when I try to install them they don't install either.
Now downloading the Megaupload file of the original apps so I can get a calendar of some kind. The only thing I really hate about the Samsung calendar is that it defaults to a locally stored "My Calendar" that doesn't sync with anything and is completely useless. And you can't delete My Calendar or even make it not the default, you can only hide it. Stupid stupid stupid, but at least you can work around it.
EDIT: Wait, could this work if I had the Calendar.odex and CalendarProvider.odex files? I'm not running a custom rom so I think I need the odex files. Not sure though, the whole thing is a bit confusing to me.
I installed your deodex'd ROM and still doesnt work (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=783031)
Same issue as before. I boot up, ADB in, SU, remount, copy the Calendar APK's, delete the TouchWiz Calendar APKs, reboot, and no calendar at all in the phone.
Is you recently released ROm compatible with these AOSP APK's?
OK I got it to work. Woot. I used the directions and files here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=735035
And it works perfect. I am so happy to have the factory Calendar back and be able to share calendar events via Gmail again. Woot!!!!!!!!
What I cannot help but wonder though, will this work on a non-deodexed rom. ie, Factory ROM with root installed. I defeintely have to isntall this on my wifes phone but I just do not know if I need to flash the deodexed ROM on her phone.
Woot.
This tutorial is missing this....
Go into manage applications. Filter to all. Uninstall com.android.calendar.apk and com.android.provider.calendar.apk. Reboot again

CM6 is truly awesome, but guys like me miss stock apps like the Music, Browser, and Launcher apps. The replacement apps are great, but they don't feel solid enough ATM for some. You may argue that this isn't logical, but as a UX designer, I have reasons that you may or may not appreciate.
I can also use other ROMs, but other mod apps on CM6 like the DeskClock and WyContacts are cool for me. I also don't want to miss all other "invisible" stuff on CM6 like the Bluetooth HID support, FLAC support, trackball wake, etc.
I tried doing this myself by pushing the stock apks, renaming them to use the names of the mod apps, removing the mod apps, etc; but nothing worked.
Can someone bake CM 6 RC2 with all its goodness plus the stock Music, Launcher, and Browser apps? A ROM with both stock and mod versions of those apps would be cool, but if it's not possible, just the stock apps would do.
I can understand (and somewhat agree with you) about the stock launcher and browser... but why in God's name would you want that atrocity that they call a music app?
But, i'll give you +1 for stock launcher.
Out of curiosity; why not just get the apk and push/install it via adb (then set it as default on the device)? If it's just those three, seems simple enough. Am I missing something.

Yep.
I did that. Didn't work. Looks like those apps are tied to CM6's framework or something

I don't know about the browser and music apps (I MUCH prefer the stock ones), but I'm using the stock launcher2.apk on CM6.0 RC2 without issues.
Just do adb remount and adb push launcher2.apk /system/app/
If you want to remove ADW completely you can do adb remount and adb shell su rm /system/app/ADWLauncher.apk

I have tried to push the stock Music app to replace CM6's one and have no problems. Perhaps you can give it one more try?
Ok here it is just flash it in recovery. http://www.4shared.com/file/gVONv3gW/stock-signed.html
Stock launcher and music app are awful. LauncherPro and ADW are much better and faster than stock launcher.

That's really odd. I successfully pushed it with adb. I even checked with Astro and the apks really went to /system/app/. After pushing the three apks, they just uninstalled the apps (the mod apps were just uninstalled, and the stock apps still weren't installed).

Done! It worked! My Android experience feels complete again.
Can anyone explain why pushing the apks doesn't work, while d750's zip works?
Weird, i use nightlies and I rather some stock apps too. The new Music App comes with a "Video" app too which i hate so i remove it as well as:
/system/app
ADWLauncher.apk
Development.apk
Facebook.apk
Music.apk
RomManager.apk
SpareParts.apk
Term.apk
Twitter.apk
googlevoice.apk
com.amazon.mp3.apk
SuperUser.apk
/system/media.
bootanimation.zip

That there is basically what i remove whenever i format and i install the updated versions of:
Facebook.apk
googlevoice.apk
Music.apk (stock 2.2)
Launcher2.apk
I'm still trying to figure out how to get com.amazon.mp3.apk to install without showing up in Downloads. I found a thread to mark it as a "System app" but it still shows up in Downloads after a while. Dunno what i'm doing wrong but i rather the newer version as well.
@shotta35
How do you go about installing Facebook.apk, googlevoice.apk, Music.apk (stock 2.2),, Launcher2.apk?
You just have to push those to /system/app or /data/app respectivly and they will "install". Or two of those you could grab from the market.
As others have said just use adb shell and remove those. The exit from that and do a adb push Facebook.apk /system/app and it will be installed there.
Is there any way to re-load the default Samsung Captivate calendar app without starting from scratch? I deleted it thinking that I wouldn't really need it (stupid)and now I realize most calendar apps look for it. If not, is there an independent calendar app that could replace it?
Thanks a lot.
-Tony
Are you on stock or a custom rom? If it's the latter I would just download the zip again, extract the calender apk and place it in the correct folder (using root explorer or whatever) and apply permissions again, and reboot.

Every time I try to install the apk it tells me that it could not be installed. I tried downloading it from a few different sources and I get the same result every time. I put it into the system folder and try to instal it from there. I've gotten rid of all the other calendar files. No clue why I can't install the new one. I'm rooted and have permissions to side-load apps. any advice?

Because you don't need to install it. Put the apk in the system folder, make sure it has the correct file permissions and then reboot. Done!
Okay. Well, it's now in the System folder as far as I can tell. I rebooted andthe Calendar is still not installed. What I'm not sure about is the permissions. What are the "correct permissions"? as in, what should they be set to and how would I chane them if I needed to?
Anyone? This has been driving me crazy for like two weeks now.
Still no dice...
Okay, I'm taking a crack at bumping this again. Honestly, I have no idea why this isn't working. I see the apk and odex files listed under my /system folder.
When I check Titanium Backup I see the following files:
com.android.calendar
com.android.providers.calendar
They're both crossed out.
Why won't they install? What am I doing wrong?

I think these apps should be under "/system/app" and not "/system" folder.
Yeah, I also have them under /system/app but still no luck. This is really driving me nuts. They're there. For all intents and purposes the phone SHOULD recognize them and install them... but it doesn't. Weird. I honestly don't know what I should do except forget it.
OK. So I was getting bored with the gray icons in the settings menu so I decided to change them up. First thing that came to mind was the TouchWiz icons, so I pulled the icons from there to use in CM.
So this is for CM7 only and to install just push the apk to /system/app/
To install through adb type:
adb remount
adb push "Drag file here" /system/app/Settings.apk
OR with root explorer:
1. Copy the apk to your sdcard
2. With root explorer move the apk to /system/app/
Hope you enjoy (its my first real upload, and its not much)
Ohhh and I'm not responsible for anyone bricking theirs phones or who need a wipe because of this, although I don't really see how that is possible... lol
Something is wrong with the display button in settings. It force closes once you hit brightness.
Hmmm... let me look into it...
works great in my lg gt540 ! But don't forget to reboot your phone.
Maybe I'm missing something but I did what u said but it bricked my phone. I used root explorer to put the apk in system/app and it copied over the stock system.apk, rebooted and the phone was bricked.
I was able to reflash in recovery and the phone is fine now but I tried a bunch of other ways and I can't install the touchwiz settings... What am I doing wrong?
Sent from my HTC Vision with CM7-RC4
I got it to work finally.
I copied the apk over the stock apk with Root Explorer, mounted R/W, changed the persmisions for the new settings apk (i allowed all), mounted R/O, rebooted and it worked.
Thanks the colored settings are really awesome!!!
FC's on wireless & networks setting
i flashed the latest cm7 version for my milestone
and added this aswell after but when i click on wireless & networks it FC's =[
I noticed there isn't really a thread with all the apps that are safe to remove in /system/app. I'm not talking about the name of the app (i.e. Media Hub) I'm talking about the APK name (i.e. MediaHub.apk). Also, tips on what happens when you remove certain things. For example you can remove the TouchWiz launcher but you need LPP or ADW in your system folder.
So anyone want to help compile this?
When i remove touchwiz the phone dosnt boot
No list for what is safe to remove, but 1,000's of posts from people who did and regret it.

I'm deodexed and I removed TouchWizLauncher30.apk just fine.
Steps I went through:
Boot into CWM
move Launcher Pro from /data/app to /system/app
reboot
if everything is fine at that point, boot back into CWM
shell in with adb
cd /system/app
rm TouchWizLauncher30.apk
reboot
Worked for me. If you are using Boushh's voodoo kernel and recovery you need to disable lagfix before you do it and enable it when you are done, I ran into issues with lagfix enabled.
This is so annoying,
I have tried everything I could find online,
I removed the SD card to eliminate that as an option related to a corrupt image/ card.
I cleared Gallery the data under manage applications.
With ES file explorer
I deleted the com.cooliris.media folder multiple times
I renamed all dirs to hide them from the Gallery indexing.
Example renamed “DCIM” to ”.DCIM”
I opened and examined the file chunk_0 in
/com.cooliris.media/cache/local-album-cache
I was hoping i could see how far or were it crashed by the last dir it indexed.
After hiding all the dirs. I got it to this.
Data in “chunk_0(this file will grow as dirs are scanned and files are found)” opened in a hex editor.
..US..en............./...........4.......4...........b..intro..video/mp4.......................4.........O.{.....O.u...w..............:.............../
Not sure if this is a hit on what is crashing the gallery?
I'm guessing a factory reset didn't work either?
Have not done that, dont want to reconfigure the phone from scratch.
I always like to know the root of the real issue. seems kind of common.
I never use Gallery. Ever. So I wouldn't have an exact idea why it was going crazy.
Are you rooted and do you have Titanium Backup Free/Pro?
If so, back up the gallery app. Then delete it from the /system.
Restart your phone and restore the Gallery app and make it a system app again.
its rooted and i have Titanium Backup Pro.
i did not know you can delete the gallary.
I did download another gallery like app for now.
but i may give that a try.
Yeah. Wipe the data first then uninstall it.
i made the back up of the gallery, uninstalled it, when i try to recover/install it from the back up the phone stays in an install loop.
I have to reboot the phone.
now i deleted it how do i reinstall it?
I have gallery apk from the backup and the original is still under /system/app/com.cooliris.media.apk
when run the apk i get an error, application not installed.
I tried to use adb with no luck.

pkg: /data/local/tmp/gal.apk
Failure [INSTALL_FAILED_DEXOPT]
any pointers?
Follow the exact steps.
Open Titanium Backup
Wipe Gallery data (From Titanium Backup)
Uninstall Gallery (From Titanium Backup)
Restart phone
Restore App of Gallery (From Titanium Backup)
Restart phone
Try using gallery
I don’t think titanium is an option now.
as it never finishes installing. i let it go all night.
The Gallery has been deleted and i only have the option to restore. My only options are to restore App only or App+Data. both don’t finish.
so i have been reading you can force/push installs. i must be doing something wrong as it seems a restriction is preventing the other install methods,
at this point the only reason i care is i cant view images in 3d.

maybe it not 100% uninstalled? could have been an issue with how Titanium removed it.
if the os thinks its still there it wont install over it.
crap i created file called "\" now they systems treats it like a dir. i cant delete it
this is how i created it...fat fingered
F:\~droid\root backup restore files\SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse\ADB>adb push c
om.cooliris.media.apk /system/app/\
ES file Explorer shows it as a 447.91kb file the same size as the com.cooliris.media.apk file...
if select delete in ES i starts to tally the root dir as if it will delete everything under "system"
I guess it can stay ....
I am still trying to get com.cooliris.media.apk to reinstall. will i see any installing action once i reboot the phone after pushing it?
I dont see any sign of it installing other than it appearing in the apps dir.
how does push really work should the Os install any apk in the app dir if missing?
No you won't. Do you have root explorer?
no,
does ES file Exploer work the same way?
I've never used it. Does ES File Explorer have root permissions?
this is just getting a annoying if the app is under /system/app
more or less thats it right? what would stop it from being seen by the phone...
been messing with the thing for hours.
then its crap i cant restore the gallery backup i made with out titanium get stuck...

yes i can hit any dir like system, and it can change all attributes.
I have been using it now to move files from my pc over the wifi and network shares.
I can have app.apk on my pc see it on the network with ES, and copy it to /system/app
i put a another version of gallery from another phone i found online in /system/app
after a reboot it showed up. not sure it thats a real sign as i can manual run and install it if i wish.
also this does no good in the long run as you cant view photos in 3d, as they are displayed side by side in this version of gallery.
maybe i need a fresh copy if the lg thrill gallery?
ok i found a ver of gallery from a custom cooked rom posting.
it shows up now,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309114&highlight=gallery
but it still crashes like the original one did at the start of all this lol....
atleast i can view my pictures in 3d again.
i dont know what is causing the crash, but what causes it is at the end of scanning all the images. the more picutes i have the longer it takes to crash.
if i have zero images it crash instantly.
I guess my backup of the original gallery is corrupt?
That's what it seems. Do a titanium backup of all your used apps and reflash or factory reset?
