[Q] Mflops? - Hero CDMA Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had a Samsung Moment and most of the rom descriptions included the Mflop scores. I sold it and got a Hero and I've noticed pretty much no one lists or talks about Mflop scores? Is there a reason for this, is it not important since the Hero is so slow anyways?
The fastest score I've seen was with the new AospMod rom 5.6. Do any of the 2.1 roms compare?

I think it's because no one here really cares about it. Mostly because it doesn't matter. Most of us on the hero boards are more concerned with important stuff like stability, and coming from a moment and calling the hero slow is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. ;-)

MFlops is an arbitrary cpu scoring system much like Bogomips for Linux and you see it posted on almost every roms OP. The problem is that its affected by tons of stuff and just because aospbot posts a 5.6 doesn't mean thats what you'll get, you might be running a ton of widgets and facebook sync and other stuff.
CM6 also got a 5.6 or so and I've seen 2.1 sense rom also post a high scores like this. You should use it yourself and determine what is a good score on your phone under normal conditions and then use that as a bases for scoring other roms on YOUR phone.
Mflops are usually calculated by how many Floating Point operations it can calculate per second (usually pi to some exponent), while Mips is how many Fixed point operations it can calculate a second.
So pretty much ignore it unless your running it on your phone.

Come on the moment has an 800mhz processor that can be overclocked and the same amount of RAM as the Hero (288). It's faster, but that doesn't mean it's better. I prefer the Hero.

Mflops is still used, but it is no longer a primary measure of a phone's capabilities. Most people use Quadrant to determine a phone's performance, as that incorporates 2D and 3D graphic performance in addition to calculations. But I've heard people use BenchmarkPi, CPU Benchmark, etc. It all is really quite irrelevant if your phone is fast enough and performs well enough for you; posting scores of any type is really just a digital pissing contest.

Performance

Okay, another question that makes me feel kinda dumb.
How can I improve my N1's performance?
Specifically, how in the world do I get my nexus even close to the N1's I see on Linpack's "Top Devices"?
I'm running diet_2.6.33.2.hybrid_avs_925mv_OC with cyanogen 5.0.6. I can get 7.778 MFLOPS. Honestly, I don’t even know what that means. All I know is that I want more. Or do I? Does it even make that much of a difference in everyday usage?
I've noticed that in the JIT thread under development they talk about getting up to 17 MFLOPS, but no one really explains what JIT is or does. Just that it's unstable and that if your not sure what it is, you don't need it.
I can benchmarkPi in 2790 - how in the hell do I get it lower? Under the rom description of some of the top 50 they mention JIT and experimental kernels, but there's not much room for more than just the generic names of them. Where do I get these magical roms and kernels? Do I even want them? Are they so unstable that they can only be used to gain geek cred on some benchmark lists and once they hit the "high score" they explode in flames? Do I need safety goggles before I flash the update.zip?
Seriously though, I know I'm not the only one with these questions - so any info would help. And do me a favor, please do not respond to say that if I don't know - I don’t need to know. At one point, you didn't know either. No one was born with this knowledge.
I know there is a very bright person on here that is willing to take a couple of minutes to shed some light on us simpletons. I'd like to thank you in advance. Thanks.
Even if you get higher linpack scores, you will barely notice any difference in your devices performance... That's why I tend to ignore it. If its possible to get faster than Cyanogen ROMs (not in terms of linpack) I don't know how different things would be.. im curious about how quick Froyo is though.
Oh and have you searched, Jit has been covered in more places than just xda developers, several times it has been discussed I believe.. while using it, my Linpack scores did get into the double digits though - but this (not even that noticeable actually) speed increase was not worth the random reboots, and such. When Jit is stable though, it will be quite nice.. hopefully Froyo has it.
Linpack number did not make any differences in overall usage . Now, I am using my own UV kernel and setcpu max freq to 500MHz.. only... but, I still able to get 26.8 fps in Neocore's 3D benchmark. Playing games, 3D or not, still smooth and fluid.
I also waiting for Froyo and hope we can get even efficient and fast OS.
TQ.

How to interpret MFLOPS

http://www.greenecomputing.com/apps/linpack/linpack-by-device/
I'm lost guys. I can't seem to get an answer anywhere. I posted the link above as reference. Look at the Droid section and see how there are 72 MFLOPS as the leader and then a consistent 50-30 range there.
Are the 50-30 MFLOPS devices running at a stable, reliable level or are these one-hit wonders? I have read recent posts of people happy with "11 MFLOPS" on their ROMs. Are these "Top 10" Droids really just expert devs or are these numbers attainable by the "average user?"
Thanks goiys.
Running a rooted 2.2 rom (the stock, leaked one from Moto) I'm seeing a peak of 9.333MFLOPS
Normal is high 8.x's. No clue beyond that.
How did they manage to do eight times that number?
Quite simply, lies and trickery.
If you look at some of the entries, you'll see misplaced scores like Nexus Ones in the Magic chart.
I'm willing to bet several of the outrageous scores are being done via emulators on a PC and then edited to look like phones.

Weird.
I'm running BB v0.4
smoked glass theme + add-ons
2.2 Froyo and I'm getting 12.737 MFLOPS consistently, the highest being
just over 13 but it only did it once so I didn't upload that to Linpack
'cause I think that'd be cheap.
I couldn't edit my post but it is clocked at 800Mhz
and I'm wanting to try the 1.2 ULV kernel by P3.

[FROYO]Quadrant and Linpack scores

Hello guys, I've just benched my Captivate after installing the leaked Froyo rom and I'm quite disappointed to say the least....
This has really been beaten to death. Quadrant and Linpack are geared towards Snapdragon.

I agree, and in the end who cares?
If my phone runs fast, runs all apps fast, and does everything i want it to do; then i really don't care what the benchmark says.
The Droid X is only faster in Quadrant because it doesn't use Samsung's crappy RFS filesystem, but that's easy for us to fix with lagfixes. The Nexus is only faster because the JIT is optimized specifically for Snapdragon processors and these benchmark programs favor Snapdragon processors as well. With a lag fix our phones are the fastest thing out there. Don't get too caught up in synthetic benchmarks.
dont worry about numbers as much as real world performance.. turn on flash and go browse pages.. proof is in the pudddin!
I agree it is all about real world use. Not to mention if I am not wrong that it has already been stated that Quad doesnt give 100% accurate results. Thread closed

[ThinkTank] JIT Optimization w/ Hummingbird Chipset

The possibilty of Android 2.2 speed improvements made us Vibrant owners salivate in anticipation for the JIT compiler but didnt see a significant increase in performance like it did with the nexus one. One thing that could eliminate lag in addition to lag fixes is optimization of JIT for our CPU hardware. We would like a proactive effort for developer to investigate for the above avg user. (Non-Developers) JIT Optimization = Higher Linpack MFLOPS
I think we're getting it in gingerbread =p

Im tired of hearing about linpack and quadrent scores already, they mean nothing. This is the fastest phone on the market right now period,if you dont like it trade it for a g2 or what have you like the rest of the idiots on craigslist.I personally have used every android phone available on tmo including the nexus1,g2,and mt4g.I xan tell you imho this phone is way faster and more responsive, and obviously the display and graphics are 2nd to none.complain about the lack of flash or ffc,but please dont complain about speed and performance, and as far as lag,try flashing a bionix rom after a clean stock odin,I've been using it since it came out and can tell you bionix final v2,and my current rom obsedion v5 run smooth as hell w/ no lagfix or oc kernal. So do yourself a favor, ignore linpack scores.

yes, basing everything off benchmarks is dumb. however, you can't ignore the fact that optimizing JIT for the hummingbird will net real world performance improvements.

thank you.....and plus i kno about the myth of high linpacks = better performance. i said "JIT optimization = High linpacks". High Linpack is a side affect of the performance increase. The nexus One performance has jumped exponentially from 2.1 to 2.2 because of the JIT optimization of the Snapdragon in theory, it should do the same for the vibrant as well. Everybody's phone reacts to sofware differently. think im lying, ask the ppl who had vibrants that couldnt OC like the rest like myself or ppl who cant have Voodoo. Trust me lil boy i aint nowhere a noob. Please take ur trollism to some1 else who dont kno wtf theyre talkin about. If i really wanted to get another phone, i wouldnt be posting stuff like this or being an active poster in a Vibrant forum right? Right????? Checkmate....

This has been discussed before, certain Qualcomm chips are better optimizer for arithmetic calculations than the Hummingbird it. It means nothing in real world usage, where the Galaxy S variants still dominate (with a "lag" fix, of course)
Still, despite obvious advantages of Qualcom's CPU, the Hummingbird still can benefit from software optimizations of JIT to efficiently interface the hardware. Performance may not jump like it did w/ the N1, but it would help. Just like a car w/ 600 HP. A car w/ that amount of power is just useless unless it efficiently gets ALL that power to the tires right? same concept applies.
We are not getting it in gingerbread. The snapdragon have faster FPU performance due to a 128 bit SIMD FPU datapath compared to Cortex-A8's 64 bit implementation. Both FPUs process the same SIMD-style instructions, the snapdragon just happens to be able to do twice as much.

Couldn't disagree more. I've also used just about every Tmobile compatible android smartphone. I currently have a Vibrant and I wish I would have kept my N1. And I almost pulled the trigger on trading in this POS for a G2 but the financial loss was just too great. I've yet to try any Bionix based MOD that was worth a damn. Not a one. Admittedly I've quit trying but I can't imagine much has changed.
The only thing keeping me from throwing this phone in the ocean some days is Cyanogen's team is getting close. I'm running the beta on a Euro SGS I have. Hate it as much as the Vibrant but I'm hopeful CM can save this phone from a sledgehammer.
You may be tired of hearing it but from my seat, as long as Samsung controls anything on these phones you will continue to hear it. Loudly.

Please, stop embarrassing yourself. The Nexus One is and was a great phone, but the Vibrant is better in almost every way. Better hardware, bigger screen, better screen, faster, and more units sold.

Wonderful analogy. I however do not love my Vibrant. I love the hardware and screen but because Samsung pulls the strings, usually I want to drop kick the thing because of it's limitations, instability and overall suck of the Samsung ROM. And yes, pretty much all the mods to it on here. Though Axura is about the closest thing my phone actually likes.
What makes you even think the Galaxy S line is even going to see Gingerbread? This is Samsung we are talking about...

Htc fell off and google knows it,thats why the new nexus is made by samsung, htc may have pioneered android but there sound always sucked and right now samsung kinda controls the display game, nobody else can produce super amoled and there abou to release super amoled 2,admitidly samsung has a bad rep for not supporting current models(i.e. The whole behold 2 debacle.) And words can't describe how much I hate motorola, htc is still good but I wouldnt call them the android kings,I feel samsung has alot of potential to become the flagship brand for google.

Oh Ye of little faith.......... Get real I have had almost every phone on the market (I can afford to buy what I want when I want) and after so many this has come closet to what I've been looking for especially since the 2.2 roms are out. My Biggest complaint about people knocking the phone is they always blame the phone for their poor flashing skills. This phone rocks and it is flexible enough to allow gingerbread whenever it arrives. Try that with a DroidX or HD7......(you fill in the name)....BTW I have a FFC and talk over 3g on it using tango without lag. I just need to make it so I can video a call to a computer and I am golden.
Bottomline..........this is a great phone........that is why there are so many devs playing with it.

You, my friend, are not very smart. This thread needs to be closed or moved to general. Just as you would make an idiot of yourself trying to argue relativistic quantum mechanics with physicists, you are doing now.
This thread got interesting. As has already been said the Snapdragon benefits from JIT more because of its 128bit SIMD. While I am sure there is probably some room left to optimize JIT for the Hummingbird I wouldn't expect anything near the gain the N1 saw. I guess it is good or bad depending on how you look at it but the latest 2.2 ROMs floating around is as good as it gets regarding 2.2 and JIT. Don't expect much if any gain there.
But lets face it in the real world the phones perform about the same which leaves me to believe the benchmarks are that much more meaningless because they usually don't test things you actually use the phone for. Some of them would have you belive the N1 is twice as fast as the SGS and anyone with a grasp on reality just knows that isn't true. This also makes me curious when I read about people saying their phones are slow. It makes me wonder what they have done to them to slow them down because even on the stock ROM my phone was pretty snappy. And on Onyx 4.2 my phone is blazing fast with no lag fix or OC! Seriously this ROM is crazy smooth and fast and everything works.
Don't expect much from CM that you can't already get in the 2.2 ROMs floating around here. CM will still be RFS and they are using the same lag fix as everyone else here and really there isn't much of an advantage to their ROM as long as that is the case. Sure they will have features that you won't see in other ROMs here but overall I expect the CM ROMs will perform about the same as the SGS source based ROMs.
As I have already said I think this phone is fast but if there is any real speed gain to be had it will be accomplished by replacing RFS with something more efficient.

From what I understand cm for the vibrant still has a lot of proprietary samsung stuff in it, because otherwise it just wouldn't work.

Quadrant score doesn't mean much. Compare real world usage and you'll see that stock rooted performs much better than 0.6.8 at this time. It's especially evident when scrolling through rich websites which will stutter badly on 0.6.8. The same sites are smooth on stock. Eventually froyo will get there, but not yet.
Quadrant is meaningless for comparing one device to another, across different Android Builds. It is somewhat meaningful as a gauge on the same device for comparing between builds, in the same sense that you can gauge a car's speed by knowing it's horsepower - more is better.
That said, CyanogenMod-7.0.0-RC1-encore-KANG, which is currently running on my nook, errors out on Quadrant. General usability is on par with my G2, so take from that what you will.
