I have looked on about 10 threads and 10 websites trying to get Keis to work. I use Touch Wiz.
What am I missing here ?
When I connect my USB to the phone and I have it set up so these options pop up and ask me what I want to do
When I select the Keis option -- the screen dissapears for one sec then re-opens with the menu again (asking me what I want to do)
It diappears again. And it does this over and over. Ever 2 secs just disappears then reappears.
WHY is this happening ?
HOW can I get a firmware update (bell i9000m) when I can't even connect o keis
no one eh?

Doesn't work for me, too.
Set default action when plugging in usb to KIES and disable USB-Debugging.
This works for me.
If your MTP-Application crashes on and on, look at your internal sd card and delete files with long filenames. KIES doesn't like long filenames.
Dud try to put microsoft net framework 3,5 on your machine and that should help i had this same problem and this was the cure hope it will help you too

Go to Settings/Wireless and Network/USB settings and click on Samsung Kies. USB debugging needs to be turned off.
Open Kies, click the logo in the top left that says "KIES" then select "Driver Recovery" let this run to the end.
Now plug in your phone, does it work now?
Also try closing kies, closing kies in the tray too, then connect the phone, choosing kies as the connect option. Wait until it says "connected" on the phone, then launch kies.
Oooh. Make sure you close adw or launcher pro too. Must use tw ui.

I had the exactly same problem when I was using Windows 7 64-bit. There was apparenlty no fix for it. Luckily, I had the opportunity to move to 32-bit which solved all the problems.
Are you, then, using Windows7 64 bit edition?
Win 7 64-bit user here. Works fine for me.
Say, what exactly have you tried so far? That should help us to narrow down the source of the problem.
I ended up having to do a hardware reset before I could get the MTP Application problem solved and KIES to detect the phone. Even formatting the internal SD didn't help.

In mass storage mode delete all files (and directories) with extension longer than 16 chars.
For example:
DCIM\.thumbnails\.thumbdata3--1967290299
has extension 22 chars long
did you check here?

in my case it was an USB port issue with Windows 7 x64
unfortunately it fixed itself up, so i have no clue what was the cause of the problem

Oh god, I'd never let anyone at the AT&T store touch my phone for an update. I'm betting on a Kies solution seeing as how the last ota bricked so many phones.

Have you tried mini kies? And you have a phone that is very easy to root, mod, etc, so robert be afraid to get yourself hooked on flashing like etter rest of us.. just check the three button thread in the dev section first.

I have seen many threads with people saying that kies does not recognize their phone or what not. I had the same problem and I played around with it and figured out my situation and why it was not working. Maybe you are in the same boat as I was so I hope this helps. I had installed the Launcher Pro app (since I didnt like TouchWiz) and used Home Switcher app to change and set Launcher Pro as my default UI.
I installed both the drivers and kies software from the Samsung website for my phone:
www.samsung.com/us/support/downloads/SGH-I897ZKAATT
At first, it was not working even when I changed my USB settings to "Samsung Kies". Settings --> Applications --> USB Settings --> Samsung Kies.
I found out that it was because of Launcher Pro....Kies did not like because your phone must not have any apps running when the phone is plugged into the USB port with Samsung Kies as the USB setting and should be in some "idle" state. So....I set "Samsung Kies" as my USB Settings, I used Home Switcher to set TouchWiz as my default UI, made sure I was at the TouchWiz home screen, plugged in the USB cable into my phone and computer...voila....my phone went into "Samsung Kies" mode (on my screen, it shows MTP Application on the title bar and shows a USB cable with the words "connected" below it). From there, Samsung Kies recognized my phone and I was able to access my contacts, messages, calendar, etc from Samsung Kies.
Hope that helps!
EDIT: Also, whenever I try to plug it in with an app running, i get the error message "PC connection only available only in idle screen. Close running applications". This is what prompted me to think about switching back to TouchWiz home screen at first. Maybe the people who are having trouble with Kies need to close their apps as well.

Hi,
I just got my Samsung Galaxy S a few days back and installed Kies on my Windows Vista PC (32 bit) last night. It asked for an update as soon as I started it for the first time and I did so.
When I tried connecting my phone to the PC USB, it asked for the connection mode and I chose "Samsung Kies", right after this I see the Galaxy S flickering between the MTP application connection screen and the home screen. This goes on indefinitely and I need to pull out the cable to stop this.
This is really frustrating. Is this a problem with my phone (USB port damaged) or some other problem? If anyone else here is facing this and has resolved it please let me know how.
TIA
Put your phone in mass storage mode, connect it to your PC so that you can browse the internal storage and delete any files that have extensions longer than 16 characters. This is the reason why MTP is crashing over and over. If you do a search for it, its a common problem. I think there is even an app that someone wrote to scan your internal SD and automatically remove these files.
Know the name of the app?

Had the same problem a while back and this fixed it
Thanks for all the help.
Remvoed Dolphin HD (the one that had 16+ chars extensions) and was able to connect with Kies.
Ive had this problem when trying to install KIES last night, going to give this a go as i want to upgrade to some FroYo goodness!
Hi guys, I've had a look around the net and asked on other forums, but can't seem to find the answer to my problems, so someone recommended here.
Apologies, if this has already been covered, but I did have a search and couldn't find what I was looking for.
I think I have two problems, don't know if they are related, but don't think so.
Problem 1:
Got the Galaxy S for my daughter for Christmas. She has never been able to log in to the android marketplace. She was using the her google log in which wasn't a gmail account. Today I signed her up a gmail account, and tried again and got the following error message:
You don't have a network connection.
This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. Please try again when connected to a mobile network, or connect to a wi-fi network. If the problem continues, call customer care.

The phone is definitely connected the net by wi-fi, which I have proved to be working correctly.
Problem 2:
To try and solve problem 1, I thought I would see if the firmware was up-to-date, however, I can't get the phone to connect to Kies. I have tried on two different laptops, one running Vista and one Windows 7. It seems to be saying it's some kind of driver problem. I have clicked on install drivers on Kies, but it makes no difference.
I have made sure the phone is selected Kies. I have also tried selecting mass storage and connecting through My Computer, but still it doesn't recognise the phone.
I believe the phone's firmware is out of date, as it is 2.1 update 1 and I believe 2.2 is available.
Apologies for the long post, can anybody help me to get Kies and marketplace working?
I am not interested in jailbreaking the phone, as it's for my daughter.
The phone is a contract phone, in the UK with orange. I have made sure orange safe guard is not active.
Thanks in advance, if you need anymore infor, i will try and supply it.
Any idea's?
Bump.
Can anybody help or is the best option to try a factory restore / take it back to the shop?
Well there is alot of tread that explain how you connect to kies.
If you can use internet then it should work.
Have you try to power of the phone and wait 5 minutes and then power it on?
**DamianGTO Steam kernel. 350MB Ram. 500HZ. ext2/jfs . js3 base**
I have got the market place working by doing a factory restore, but for the life of me, I can't get the phoned connected to Kies to do a firmware update.
I have tried on 4 different laptops.
1. Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
2. Windows 7 Home Basic.
3. Windows Vista.
4. Windows XP.
and I can't get it to connect on any of them.
I have tried un-installing and re-installing Kies. I have tried using different usb wires and ports. Phone charges by usb when plugged in.
I have tried connecting the phone in both Kies mode and Mass Storage mode.
The error I keep getting seems to be a driver error:
Device Driver software was not successfully installed.
Please consult your device manufacturer for assistance in getting this device installed.

tell me if that trick works
Are you using a USB hub? If so don't . Plug it straight into the rear USB of your computer.
Do you have Bluetooth active? Turn it off.
Are you using any other Home than the one it came with (the screen you see when you first turn it on)? Go back to the stock TW Launcher
In the Kies Tools menu click on Install Driver and then try again after it's finished.
Finally if it is still not connecting leave it plugged in and go into device manager. If the drivers show up there they should be listed as Samsung i9000 if I remember then right click and un-install drivers then unplug phone and plug it back in after a few moments.
Also use the cabel that did come with.the phone.

Been searching for a while and can't find anything in the forums, or any apps. Thought I would post it here to see if any of the wizards knew of something that might work.
I carry my Note 1 (GT-N7000 international version) without any case in my trouser pocket (screen towards my leg) with nothing else in the pocket. It's the way I like it and works fine for me. But, occasionally the home button will be accidentally pressed. Although it eventually turns itself off, I was looking for an app that would modify the home button so that it only works on a long press (I never use the task manager anyway).
My phone is not rooted and is still running the original 2.3.6 (never got any software update notification).
Has anybody heard of any app (or setting?) that would allow me to do this?
Thanks
I guess you can do it without getting rooted
But you can use apps that work with proximity sensor..Try this one
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...1dGlzLnZpbGl1cy5hbmRyb2lkLnNjcmVlbmxvY2tlciJd
raj
It never occurred to me to look for proximity sensor apps -- I just kept searching for home button apps.
It works. If the home button is pushed, it almost immediately shuts itself off.
I knew there was a wizard out there.
Thanks.

Just curious that you never got any software update notification. May b "Auto update" & "Push message" under "Settings>About Phone>Software update" are disabled? Try connecting ur phone to ur PC/Laptop through Kies..AFAIK, you should be able to update to ICS..sorry for concentrating on your 2nd issue rather than the main one..

Thanks for responding! Both Auto Update and Push Message are checked. About once I week I manually check for an update, but it says that no update is available.
I can connect via Kies, but I see nothing in Kies about updating the OS.
By the way, this is actually a UK phone that I've been using in the U.S. I don't know if that would make any difference. Everything works fine.
Any help would be appreciated. I would like to upgrade to ICS.
Best regards

Even though u live in the US,you should get all the updates of the UK
Its not required to be in the same country where you bought the phone to get the software update
If you dont get it through ota,you can dowmload the ics rom and flash it through pc odin
You can find all stock roms here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
Download either US or UK rom and flash it through pc odin
There are also instructions and screenshots of flashing a rom in the above link
And if you flash ics,do not do any wipes with stock kernel, stock ics kernels are not safe to wipe and may lead to a brick.First root your phone and flash a safe kernel
Thanks to shyamub4u and rajsekhar.300!
Your comments made me start researching Kies, and I found out I was using only Kies Air. I downloaded Kies, connected my Note via cable, and the ICS update appeared. It installed fine. So I got two issues resolved in one post.
Bravo.
For a few days now, after connecting my usb cable to the pc, i get the "connect" sound on both the PC and the Phone, but it keeps going to charge only, not MTP. I checked the Dev Options, set it to MTP, still didnt work.
I also did a factory reset, nothing. Any ideas?
Also, the notification popup for choosing the connection type via USB, no longer shows up.
EDIT: I tried multiple cables, they are not the problem.

Again, all of the USUAL stuff I've tried. One thing i have noticed, under the options where i chose what type of connection i want to have, if i change it from one to another, it dosen't update right away, i have to close the options, and reopen them to see it change.
Considering you tried the usual software stuff and that you've tried multiple cables, it may be your phone's port that's damaged or something.
If you don't have any sensible data on the phone I suggest doing a factory reset, just to discard the possibility. But if that seems like too much hassle, I would get an ftp app on the playstore to do all the data transferring between your phone and any windows machine. I personally use the solid explorer plugin.
Hope I helped!

You said you've already performed a factory reset, tried cables, tried reinstalling drivers cleanly, and tried several settings on the phone.
Have you gotten HiSuite installed? If so, does HiSuite recognize your phone at all?
Have you also tried different computers? I would figure you did since you said you tried all the obvious things....
If HiSuite gives no response at all and you've already factory reset before, I feel as though its either a hardware problem like FAFI_1999 has suggested, or it is a very deep rooted software bug (behind repair for a regular user, maybe even in kernel, plus there is no clear way of knowing where the exact problem lies at this point so we wouldn't know where to look in the first place).
In this case, best advice I could give you is to send your phone to a service center.... At least if it still falls under warranty....
Does adb see your phone?
For me it always goes to charge only and I have to manually check (or uncheck and recheck) the Files option in the notifications.

I think i know the issue and i also got the solution.
Maybe the problem is an update KB that was installed on your PC. 3 months ago, Microsoft releasead a KB update that broke MTP ( https://betanews.com/2017/03/10/microsoft-admits-mistake-pulls-problematic-windows-10-driver/ ). Read the article and do what it's recommended for your windows version.

If that KB update is installed, at every reinstall of USB driver its gonna install the wrong one. I had the issue on my laptop and had to uninstall the kb and then plug again the phone in to reinstall the correct usb driver.
If the bug is caused by windows, even if you don't know how it's possible, you should try to repair windows by refresh. It's a long shot, but i had a similar problem, i could not use PPPoE service because my friend unwillingly did something wrong on his laptop. I had to refresh windows to repair the network card driver and finally configure PPPoE service on his laptop.
So... refresh?
