Hi,
I just flashed my captivate with the file I897UCJF7_homebinary.tar using ODIN and s1_odin_20100512.pit.
In ODIN I set the option re-partition.
Now the phone says:
update media, please wait...
E: Can't mount /dev/block/stl10
(invalid argument)
E:copy_dbdata_media: can't mount DBDATA:
copy default media content failed.
What can I do????
Regards,
Mauricio

I am very much an android noob so please forgive me but cant you just grab the odin one click to flash back to stock?
This was all covered in the JH7 thread on multiple occasions.
To fix the problem use the 1 click recovery program to flash back to Stock JF6 (Or JH2 or JH3, whichever, it doesnt matter)
After it has flashed and booted and all is well again, get back into odin, put the JH7 tar file into pda, DONT TOUCH REPARTITION, and flash.
The reason for this screwup is because the JH7 tar package does not contain params or dbdata files, it's not meant to be a full installer- it's meant to be an upgrade. When you partitioned you deleted your existing dbdata and params partitions on your phone, so when JH7 tried to set them up they didn't exist.

Thanks for this info. I've been wondering about the difference between the odin's (having only used the one-click) and your concise explanation helped clear it up. thanks

Sure thing, if you're really interested in the Odin differences they can be summed up pretty easily:
Odin 1 Click - Handy package that does all the footwork for you, contains pit, automatically repartitions and wipes your entire internal NAND clean and reinstalls stock firmware.
Odin (The non 1 click variety) - Is capable of the same things as the 1 click, the difference being you have to have all the components necessary. A separate pit (only necessary if repartitioning), and a tar file that contains the firmware you want to flash. The normal Odin is a little more powerful because you have options to flash specific components to your phone. Like if you wanted to flash a kernel, you could place a kernel image into the "PDA" slot and it would flash ONLY the kernel leaving the rest of your data intact. This can also be done with modem files ("Phone" slot).
I see that this has been resolved, but I'm curious if anyone knows what the PIT is and when it should be used. I didn't really see any reference to it in the JH7 update forum (although I did stop around page 40). Also, are there different tars for Phone and CSC when those are to be used? Thanks for the help, I had a hard time figuring out Odin to the point where I could make it work.

The pit file is used as a map when you repartition your phone. I've also had to use it when flashing in a Eclair modem file to Froyo =P But that's about it
With the JH7 firmware you don't have to worry about phone or CSC, it's all included
Zilch25,
Excellent and concise information, I have been using Odin for a while but still have to admire your thoughtful explanation.
Anytime, I'd rather have people know what they were doing when they do it rather than just following instructions- makes them more capable of troubleshooting their own problems in the future

I am trying to root my captivate, on rebooting ( reinstall pkgs.) I get an error "can't open / sd card/ update.zip.
SD card is out and unmounted. Tried factory reset to clear but still same error.
Any suggestions would be welcomed.
Make sure it's just named update not update.zip.
I'm having same problem and it's renamed "update".

The file must be copied as is. Don't rename it in windows and you can check your phone with my files after copied....name should be update.zip if not rename it on phone to that
And it needs to be on internal sdcard... /sdcard/update.zip

[Q] Why Do I get this error "The Parameter is incorrect." Trying to Write to my Phone
I have a brand new Samsung Captivate from Rogers.
I have updated it to 2.2 using kies.
I then did the one click root.
Now when I connect it to my computer I get "The Parameter is incorrect." every time I try to copy a file or make a new directory.
I have formatted the memory from the phone and I can then copy files or make folders temporarily. Until the phone decides that it wants to throw the error again.
I can also run a check disk from my computer with “Automatically Fix system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" check. This will also fix the problem temporarily.
So how do I fix the permanently?
This is my first post so please don't flame me to bad.
Thanks in advance.
looks like something wrong in your computer. try to reinstall the usb drivers and switch to another computer to see if it still happens.
I have tried it on my desktop, my laptop and my work desktop.
The problem always reappears.
I am using the driver from the Wiki.
Windows ?????
Windows 7 x64
Parameter is incorrect error:
You need to make sure your drives (SD) are/is formated with FAT32.
This will allow maximum file size of 4Gb.
I have formated fat32 and it has just started getting the error again.
I found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-907854.html
this is what is happening to me.
Has anyone found a fix?
i had this issue with stock 2.2 rogers.
one time i was able to fix by right clicking the phone in my computer> properties> tools > scan for errors. Found some.
it was also deleting files/songs that i put on the internal sd.
returned the phone. no problem since, but have also been using custom roms since.
This is weird. I had the same problem on an old version of di11igafs rom. It was related to the file vold.fstab which deals with mounting storage. I find it odd that this is happening o a sock rom. If any of you feel so inclined upload your vold.fstab and ill have a look.

If you use root explorer or ASTRO (which is free) to navigate to the root directory of your phone, look for the folder named 'etc' inside that folder should be 2 VOLD files. make a copy of these.
PS: MAKE SURE NOT TO MOVE THEM!!! xD (or delete O: )
So I just got off the phone with samsung and they told me to return the phone to rogers because rogers website is giving the wrong firmware.
Now I do not know if this is true but I would like to fix the problem.
They also said that I can not put the correct 2.2 on as kies will see the wrong 2.2 and not install the correct one.
So now I guess I have no choice
I have attached both of the vold files for you to look at.
I hope someone can come up with a fix as Rogers does not want to change the phone. They are waiting on a fix from Samsung and Samsung says there is no fix coming and that I need to change the phone.
Is there a way to go back to 2.1 Rogers?

use odin 1.7 with
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19201431/SGH-I896_UXJI2StockRogers2.1.zip
to get back to 2.1 rogers. use the PIT file and RE-Partition. i have been flashing phoenix roms with no problem.
i only had those error problems with stock 2.2 after updating, but to be honest only had the phone less than 1 week between 2.1> 2.2>custom> returned to store. the second phone was on phoenix within 2 hours of getting it.
Hi Everyone,
I got the SGS I9000 a few months ago and I must say I'm not particularly happy with the lagging at times.
I youtube'd some videos, but I'm really confused on the best method to use and which rom and lag fix I should use and how to install.
If anyone can help me that would be great, I have the Galaxy i9000.
Cheers
Search this is a repetition of multiple posts asking the same question .
Their is no best rom .
Simple method would be to read the faqs on this forum understand what you are doing first .
Rom Kitchen Faqs and build your own rom would be my first choice ,

Warning if you do not understand then you brick your phone .

I'd say Darky's ROM is the probably the most appropriate choice for beginners. It's one of the easiest to flash with just a few steps on Odin, and comes with the standard Voodoo lagfix.
The guide can be found here:
http://www.darkyrom.com/community/index.php?threads/odin-rom-darkys-resurrection-edition-9-2.895/
It is not the best ROM - that is a decision you have to make for yourself according to your own preferences - but it is easy to handle for first-timers and stable, and gets you to where you need (on a custom ROM) and with minimal fuss.
ROM Kitchen is good for those who want additional options for customization, but it's not recommended for beginners especially if they don't know what all the customization options refer to, and it's easy to run into problems of you don't know what you're doing.

Thanks very much for you help Madrenergic
I found an easy method to root my phone here on XDA using Super One Click. I then Installed OCLF from the market which worked a treat and made my phone allot faster.
I did some research and found that OCLF changes the file system to ext2, then I researched voodoo lagfix and found it changes them to ext4 to make the phone even faster, so I went ahead and downloaded the voodoo 5.5 zip file to transfer straight to my phone.
It says to put the file on the internal sd card which is what I thought I had done, but when I went into android recovery mode after selecting "reboot into recovery mode" from Clockwork Mod Recovery, it gives me the option to "apply sd card update.zip" which I selected but I got an error message saying it could not find the internal directory of my phone or the file is not available.
Any pointers?
Daft question, but did you rename it to "update"?
You could also try this, it's what I used the first time I started playing around with my phone: https://market.android.com/details?id=neldar.sgs.kernel.flasher
Make sure you make a back-up with this app before applying the update.
You picked a good kernel, it's the first one I used, and I was well impressed with the results. Make sure you grab the voodoo control app from the market, there's a free version and a donate version, it's worth getting the donate version, the devs on here deserve our support.
As always read everything through a couple of times until you're sure of what you're doing
I only have a folder called "SD" which is where I put the zip file and. I have allot of other folders when I connect to usb storage, but I put the file inside that sd folder not where all the other folders are located.
I also don't any option to mount the internal sd card.
Connect phone in USB Mass storage mode PC should show two drives copy file to Phone drive .

Ha... You have e2 recovery (or was it e3) eather way it cannot flash anything else than samsung brand firms.. Easiest is to download sgs kernel flasher from market and flash voodoo file "update.zip" you don't have to do anything else...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Take that file out of folder name "SD" and paste it to your sd-cards root.

Ok so I've installed SGS Kernal Flasher, now what folder do I put the Voodoo (update.zip) into? I'm assuming I put it inside the folder for SGS Kernal Flasher?
P.S This is what my internal SD card looks like:

Nope, judging by the screenshot you posted you have the update in the right place, just open kernel flasher and find the update, 3 pics attached.
Select back up kernel, when back up is complete select choose kernel, on pic 2 you see 2 dots above back up tap on the 2 dots, then you should see something like pic 3, scroll down to the bottom to find update and tap on it.
Job done, as far as I can remember
I agree. Darky's froyo 9.5 would be the perfect balanced mod. Though I would recommend Hardcore's Speedmod K13E kernel over Dark-core 1.4. The battery life was considerably higher with Speedmod, plus there are many more useful features, like headphone calling. Though I would agree, if you're a beginner, for now use Dark core, much easier to install, with less complicated features. You can always update to Speedmod later
Thanks everyone for your help. I ended up Using ODIN to install the voodoo update.
Everything is now much smoother to use and faster opening.
Only time anything is slow is straight after I have rebooted my phone, for example opening contact takes a few seconds after rebooting the phone, but then opens instantly after that.
Dear co-members and developers,
ther is one question, that i have not been able to find answer for.
Is it possible to unzip/mount the official Galaxy Note rom, then change som apk (for exmaple i want to change the launcher for the TW5.0 one, or replace the originial phone.apk with another one) and after this, to flash it via odin. (i do not wish to root the phone)
Until now, i was able to extract the factoryfs.img, change the format to ext4 via simg2img (one of the tool i found on xda) and mount it (i could transfer files). But now, i am not sure if i can flash such edited file into my note without bricking it (since i change the filesystem little bit (as i understand the transformation process from samsung img to ext4 img).
Thank you for your answers.

Yes you can .But I doubt that it may give you triangle or counter. In that case, its better to root, install cwm, make your files a cwm zip, flash it in recovery....
Thank you for your answer.
The real issues is not really the counter, but the fact that i converted the "official" samsung img to ext4. I ma kind of afraid what that might do with my phone

may be the best way is to root, install cwm, make your mod along with other unmoded files into cwm zip, flash it to check if it works. If it work, then make a odin rom.
It has two advantages:
1.You can find if the mod works.Take a backup before trying the mod and if it dont work.restore the backup.
2.It wont brick your phone in anyway
Hi,
Trying to help a friend recover files (media) that were accidentally deleted on the sm-g900a. To recover those files, all signs indicate that rooting is necessary.
She tried using towelroot without mod, but it failed. I'm guessing she updated sometime in the past. So I'm guessing to root, she'll need to follow the steps (rather, I'll have to follow the steps since it might be a bit much for said friend) in the Root Guide on the General page.
**Q: Once the steps are complete - ie flashing the experimental firmware/OF3- will the chances of file recovery lessen (media files)? (ie will flashing the new firmware(s) override hard drive space that was occupied by said deleted files?) My first guess is minimal, since I'm guessin that part of the hard drive that'll be re-written are mainly the /system and /data files. I'm thinking about this like a traditional HD. But since this isn't my phone, I'd like to get second opinions.
**Q: She's not a tech person so any hitches w/r/t the new stock will be a hassle. Are there any glitches in the no-ship OF3? If so, I'm guessing flashing firmware from sammobile will remedy the problem. (root after this will not be necessary)
***Q: An afterthought. (It's been a while since I've flashed a phone w/ files I cared about. I'm pretty sure they aren't buuuttt) Will the files in /[user] directory affected with the flashes? (eg /sdcard, /internal (however the nomenclature works on the S5. Not the actual Sdcard)

Okay I'll try to go in order here.
1. flashing the new firmware might lessen the chances of file recovery. I'm not exactly sure how NAND chips work, so the problem might be that it zeroes all the sectors out (unlikely) or it just uses a file index and the entries are erased. So proceed at your own risk, if the files are already lost there isn't much more to lose at this point anyway.
2. the pre-rooted OF3 is just the entire OF3 stock system but with the su files inside. Everything else is the same, so you shouldn't have any problems.
3. I'd guess no, but take that with a grain of salt since I've never really checked.
Any other questions, feel free to ask. Good luck!
