I see several different versions of ODIN being mentioned in the forum and I'm wondering which is the gold standard and/or the most up to date stable version for use on the Captivate.
Here is what I've seen that confuses me:
- References to ODIN one-click and non one-click
- Versions 1.0 all the way up to 3.0
- Filenames such as ODIN.exe and I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.zip
Can anyone assist in clearing up the confusion?
I agree it gets confusing. I can tell you that I use I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0 to flash my captivate back to stock before loading a ROM. That version makes my captivate just like it was when I first received it. It is the One-Click 1.0. The only thing I want it for is to wipe back to stock before loading a ROM and it works so I just have stuck with that one.

Uh. I don't think so.
Then I must have gotten wrong information from the android forums. What does the 1007 number mean under your battery? I read that it was month/date that the phone was manufactured?
edit: whoops it must have been July 2010?
I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.zip is the one I have always used

Thanks guys.
It seems like maybe the version of ODIN you use should be correlated with build date?
I'm on 1008.

Odin should be used only until 10.09 (correct me if i am wrong on this date). But it should never be used on 10.10 or later builds as it tends to brick them. There are separate threads detailing how to get them to stock. Since u said urs is 10.08, u should be fine.

Is that correct that the 10.08 mean 10 = 2010 and 08 = August?
I have a 1010 captivate, and I used Odin last night following the instructions located here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
It worked, took me back to stock so that I could flash Cog. 3.04. Hope that helps.
Good thread, I've been wondering about this myself. Three button download mode does not appear to work on my gf's phone but two button + usb does. Also I'm comfortable adb so adb reboot download is probably my best bet. Would I ever be so bricked that I wouldn't have access to adb?
Phone is a 1007, which version of ODIN do I need?
The other question I've seen asked often is,
"Will ODIN return MY phone to Stock ATT 2.1?"
People want to know if ODIN is going to return THEIR phone to the exact state and build it was in when purchased. I don't know the answer to this. From what I gather, ODIN is A stock 2.1 build gathered somewhere along the line, but not necessarily MY stock build.
Or, were all Captivate phones sold by ATT the same out of the box regardless of time or location of purchase? I know that there was a JH7 update, but is that the only thing that has changed on all Eclair builds for the Captivate or are other things different as well? What was the original source for ODIN? Was it a Samsung/ATT release of source code?
I also keep that I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.zip for when i want to flash back to stock. works great. If i ever screw anything up. Just go back in time. Also keep root folder near as well.

Yes, you could get to the point where you can't get it to fully boot and use adb. I can't get the three button or two button usb option to work, thus I haven't flashed any ROMs yet. Last thing I need is a $500 paperweight.

I can get the two button download mode to work. Is that a failsafe if I'm ever ALMOST totally bricked?
There is a version of Odin that fixes the 3 button recovery. It copies slightly different files to the phone.

I've read everywhere and searched everything I could...It seems ATT updated froyo so I can do anything with update.zip or go into downloading mode, just recovery mode...
Can anyone solve my problem... I have rooted it and unlocked Non market apps on it...
Oh yes, I used Kies in order to update to 2.2
Odin oneclick,if your build numb get is 1009, , out l lower. Otherwise, use regular odin. Plenty of articles here on how to do it. Next time, please use search before starting a new thread.

you dont need to go to 2.1 stock. just any stock.
hell i dont even bother going to stock between rom.
almost all the roms WIPE your phone before install anyway.... so stock goes bye bye,,,
You must not have searched too hard because this has been answered at least a dozen times. Newbie FAIL.

Indeed that is the understood objective, but getting into download mode is the impediment. I have tried a number of the advised buttons/odin/usb/battery sequences, each of them many times. All yielding only a return of the soft brick image. So now I am waiting for arrival of a shipped jig from MobileTechVideos..Still hopeful.

i have also successfully flashed with odin with a completely black screen. phone looked like it was off but was really in download mode.

This is in the wrong place. You will hear that several times I am sure.
What did you do before it started doing this? What ROM are you running? Did you try entering a download with key combos and inserting battery?
you can change the name, go into advanced mode when you edit the op. but this is in the wrong section kindly ask a moderator to move it.
have you tried it with odin already open? is this when trying to 3 button in or even if you 2button + usb cable? the volume up+ volume down + usb cable never fails me.
did you have gingerbread on the phone? if yes, did you try volume down+power for 3 seconds? menu + volume down + power?

Well it doesnt even matter I know what your problem is, do not worry, you sir are a build 1010 (+) such as myself.
And when flashing back to stock FROM GINGERBREAD you MUST use this method but do not worry.
Either buy a jig:
http://www.mobiletechvideos.com/blog/?page_id=100
Or look up how to build one yourself:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819551
After you access download mode use THIS METHOD to flash back to stock AFTER you use Odin One Click:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143
or...

**Note that I have not used izcezars package but that should also work flawlessly, I have always used the JH2 method of going back to stock but either should work perfectly in your situation**
This is what I have done multiple times now when I go stock after Gingerbread:
1. One Click (TO REPLACE BOOTLOADERS)
2. This exact bootloop
3. Download Jig
4. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=995143 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10056254&postcount=36
5. Back to stock with correct bootloaders.

Heck maybe one day he will be helping out someone else with this problem too haha.

Edit: I don't play these games!
I HAVE THE FIX: SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME TODAY, ALSO I WAS ON GR-12!!
ONLY OPTION: Go to Radio shack buy 3 100kohm resistors and make a jig, its simple http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0aoabVtPJ8
trust me follow this vid!!!!
once you get into download mode, flash stock GB again, follow all the steps, using odin 1.7.
I am back on GR-12, Im not flashing anytime soon!!!
Just so everyone knows, where should a help question like this be posted if not the Q&A section?

I am guessing you tried the battery pull method more than once and with correct button combo. I have to try it multiple times to get it to work.
Bagtery pull = remove battery, open one click, press and hold the proper download mode buttons (i.e. Vol up + down or just down), then insert the usb cable. Should boot into dl at some point. I could have sworn I read somewhere that this worked for all builds.

I was flashing my phone back to stock tonight and even though ODIN said it completed successfully (passed all the steps, incl SBL.BIN), it is completely dead; won't turn on.
I'm assuming I'll need Connexion's debrick service now, but the big question is HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?
I can't figure out WTF went wrong even though ODIN went through 100% fine.........
Basically, the download mode status bar went to full and the software said successful, but the phone never rebooted.
Any help would be great.

Which Odin did you use, and what were you on before you flashed Odin?
Also, check the Am I Bricked (see my sig) thread to know if you need jtag/unbrickable mod.

I was using ODIN 1.81 (same as I'd used 2 days earlier and have used MANY times on this Cappy).
In was running Mosaic 6 (I think it was 6).
I haven't checked the thread you mentioned; I will. I've got a jig and that isn't working; Won't power on, nothing. Tried 3 button combo; nothing.
^ Was that the "3 button fix" Odin that u used to flash back to stock ??
If so, then it only flashes the sbl.bin and NOT the boot.bin file. And that would be the reason that you are now hard bricked. Because coming from Gingerbread bootloaders and flashing only the sbl.bin from the stock 2.1 eclair, you now have mixed bootloaders, which = brick.
But at least that brick can be fixed these days.

Actually, I was using the Odin v1.81 that came with my copy of All in One Toolbox - Funny thing is, this is the version that I downloaded back in March; it'd been working fine for months. This was the first issue I'd ever had with it.
I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say this was also the first time you used this coming from gingerbread.
Pretty sure the aio contained the "3 button fix" which very irresponsibly only contains one bootloader.
I wish aio would die.
People defend it because its a helpful program. I'd like to remind everyone reading this. Aio is and always be closed source. The developer lost the source. The program is unmaintained. The program is a one-click nuker. The program is responsible for a lot of bricks
I fought the battle to have it removed from the site. I lost. Its time for others to step up and report that program. Aio captivate toolbox is a captivate deathtrap.
