Is there a way to make a rooted Captivate connect to the T-Mobile 3G radio frequencies? I'm comfortable using various ROMs and hacks....
I could be wrong but I think the 3g frequencies are different so it wont work.if there is a way I'd like to know also.

I thought this was already discussed when the unlock codes were found. The Captivate should work on Tmob 3G but the Vibrant cant on Att 3G. I don't believe you need to do anything to make the frequencies any different.
Tried my friend's sim from TMO in my captivate and it only does edge. His sim back in his G1 gets 3G so it is not the area. I believe the Vibrant works on ATT 3G but the Captivate doesn't work on TMO 3G.

you have it mixed up: vibrant can work on one of at&t's 3g bands, but captivate will not work on any t-mobile 3g bands.
Yes that is correct, I do have these mixed up. I meant to say vibrant would work on att and captivate would not work on tmob. Sorry for my error.
Sweet life
I'm on my captivate w t-mobile w no luck on 3g. Too bad because I prefer the design of the captivate over the vibrant. I'll try to make due w 2g & WiFi.
That's too bad... However I just ordered a Vibrant, and I can sell my captivate for what I bought it for. So far loving the Galaxy S line!

Has their been any development on running a Vibrant modem on the Captivate to enable 3G?
you mean running a captivate on tmobile using 3g? I could be wrong but isn't what is limiting that, the phone hardware and not modem software? not sure

You right. It is hardware based. You will never be able to get AT&T 3G on a T-mobile phone and vise versa.

Im pretty sure u can run a captivate on tmo 3g but not a vibrant on att 3g. Or the other way around. One way u can.

There is a version of the vibrent I think from Canada that uses the same 3g bands as att. I have both the captivate and the vibrent from T-Mobile and 3g doesn't work on either if I swap the sim cards

Im using my t-mo vibrant unlocked on at&t. I also get 3g. The captivate unfortunately does not pick up the t-mo 1700mhz 3g.

How's the coverage and speed? Have you run a speed test? Would love to see a screen shot of this.
I'm assuming you're rooted, btw....
Hmm.. I had tried to use my brothers Nexus 1 T-Mo with my AT&T sim and I could only get Edge.
I could have sworn that the two networks are incompatible due to the internal modems and the bands that they are using like zelendel said before.
Otherwise I would've gotten my hands on a Nexus S

From what I remember reading AT&T uses three bands for data and T-mobile only uses one.
Is it possible to get a T-mobile N1 to support the 3G Bands 850/1900 that the bell network supports? I know it is possible to flash different radios with android phones. I am still a fairly new user to android but i'am trying to learn and u can't learn with out asking questions
Thanks,
Ryan
You won't get 3G. You need the AT&T version for Telus/Bell/Rogers. You could try Wind or Mobilicity.
well that sucks, neither of those are in Nova Scotia where i am located
You could always try to look for someone to trade with, AT&T for Tmobile Nexus.
But it would probably be hard to do in person if there is no demand for it in Nova Scotia.
I don't know how safe it would be to trade by mail.
Any plans that Wind or Mobilicity will come to Nova Scotia? Just curious.
You could get it to work on Rogers GSM network but you won't get 3G, I could be wrong but I don't think Bell or Telus have GSM networks so you're out of luck there.
Oh yeah, there is that little snafu too. Even worse.
It will work on Rogers but you won't get 3G speeds.
It won't work at all on Bell/Telus.

So are you saying his Tmobile won't work on Bell/Telus at all?
But an AT&T will work fine on Telus, with 3G as well?
I am considering buying a nexus one for when I switch to telus next month.
Yes, the T-Mobile version will only work on Rogers/Fido with 2G only.
It will not work on Bell/Telus at all, ever.
It will only work on 3G on Wind Mobile and Mobilicity.
If you want full Rogers/Telus/Bell support, you need the AT&T version.

If you're a Canadian and you want a "Nexus One-like" experience on Bell/Telus/Rogers, and you're having trouble finding one with the right 3G bands...
Get an HTC Desire from Telus. Problem solved. If you don't like Sense UI you can flash it with all sorts of ROMs that will make it feel more like an N1, or you can put MIUI on it, or Cyanogen, etc...
Or according to mobile syrup(can't link) the nexus S will be on the big 3 in march
Ok so I was using galaxy s unlocker, I was never able to generate the key just add the efs.
I cant get 3g, only e
is their currently a legit unlock program that can generate a key? None of them work
AT&T and T-mobile have different 3g bands. I believe Vibrant actually has AT&T 3G bands that can be used but not Captivate for T-mobile. Probably best to sell your captivate and get a phone that works with T-mobile 3G

The Vibrant is only 1900 MHz compatible, no 850mhz. Just for clarification.

A writer for engadget was able to get a 3g connection on att with a vibrant, I think it depends on your location as the vibrant only supports one of att 3g freq
Next time just post in one spot... not 3 to 4 you will get a responce you just have to wait...

Yes, he got 1900MHz. That is the one frequency supported. 850MHz UMTS is not supported. I have also done this with my room mate's Vibrant and my SIM as well.
i believe T mobile uses 1700/2100. 2100 seems to be the most widely used/shared globaly , but it's only good in metro areas as the higher mhz bands travel less distance.
So I'm certain you all have heard about the AT&T, Tmobile merger that's coming along. Assuming that it gets approved, I'll suddenly have 3g and 4g available in my area (finally!) since Tmobile is the only one that currently supports it in our area.
My question is - will the Captivate function on the T-mobile tower spectrum for 3g and 4g data?
Please research as the answer is no. The captivate does not have any bands that work on T-Mobile. The virbrant does have bands that work on att.

How unfair! My boyfriend has the vibrant, and one of his coworkers has the new Galaxy 4g. Well, I hope they somehow tweak it so that the towers broadcast on the AT&T bands as well, else that will really stink, and provides no benefit for AT&T customers.
I saw something on Gizmodo saying that 3G phones with T-Mobile bands will no longer work on the new combined network after integration is complete. That leaves only AT&T 3G devices and whatever 4G LTE devices are around by then. So it sounds like towers will be broadcasting only AT&T frequencies.
My apologies if this information is inaccurate in any way.

Awesome for me! Sucks for my boyfriend! (though his vibrant can use AT&T frequencies if jailbroken, which he has not yet done)

I should restate what I said. The phone will work. It just won't have 3G speeds if you are using data. The Vibrant however still works on AT&T 3G towers. I don't know how or if they will actually disable bands as mentioned in a previous posters link to Gizmodo. Sorry for not being more clear in my original post.

I guess we'll just have to see - it makes sense that AT&T would convert the towers, just as they are currently they won't work. So either way in my case and my boyfriend's case we'll have to wait till our area is integrated and see what happens.
What about this?
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...850mhz-and-1900mhz-bands-too.-Works-on-ATT-3g
This thread is from last year before we really had a lot of mods to our phones. So maybe more information has been discovered?
Now we are flashing international ROMs and such and swapping modems as we like.
It seems odd that the Vibrant would be able to work on the ATT 3G frequencies but the Captivate would have been manufactured differently. And the I9000? One would think it would be capable of all the bands?
I do have both ATT and TMO sim cards with data on both plans. However, I only get Edge in my Captivate with the TMO sim inserted.
Wow. This hasn't been hashed out 100 times.
Cappy has different radio HARDWARE. Vibrant will get certain Att 3G band but the chances of you having correct band is slim since its older and slower 3G.

I have an AT&T Samsung Captivate and I'm using it with Tmobile with root and sim unlock. I know that the signal will always be on edge and whatnot but is there a radio file or anything I can use to give me better signal because I either have no signal or 2 bars on it. help?
not sure how well any of these will end up working as you know you will only get 2g...but the modem sticky at the top of the dev sectoin is what you're looking for.

Froyo would do it...
i know 3g isnt supported because of no 1700 band but dont both tmobile and att use 2100 for hspa (4g)? shouldnt we be able to use that?
Edit: I unlocked and tried a friends sim card and could only get edge, I don't know if maybe there's a setting to change to get hspa working (I know stock captivate didn't even support hspa) but I didn't try for very long.
Has anyone else managed to get hspa working?
