TouchWizContacts.apk - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone have the TouchWizContacts.apk file that they can share with me? I think that's what it should be called - correct me if I'm wrong. I believe it should be in /system/app
I deleted my contacts application using Titanium Backup. Oh, it's backed up, but for some reason, only the data, not the app. I deleted it because I found a different contacts app I like better, but I'm pretty sure that the lack of the stock app is causing my phone some troubles right now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

system apps (like swype) can't be backed up with titanium (at least with the free version, might be different for donate version). do a search for "captivate system dump" and it will take you to a thread with system dumps for JF6/JH2/JH3
find the one you're currently running and find the missing system app and copy it back over

Well, that explains it. Thanks. And thanks for the tip - I'm on it.

Titanium Backup Important Info

Several general things to make your titanium backup and restore experience actually work properly.....
Be sure to be in debugging mode.
When first opening titanium, hit the menu button and go to preferences. Scroll all the way down to "app processing mode" and switch to "Auto, indirect"
NEVER restore system data (red and green text in titanium). Only apps. I know its a pain, but its easier to re-setup accounts and all that than restore and take the chance of the problems that usually arise from restoring system stuff.
I hope this helps people....
Restoring the data from apps that have the Titanium Backup icon will restore your wifi settings and your accounts along with various other settings.
To restore your contacts load the data from Contacts Storage 2.2 and not the contacts application itself.

Just copy the Titanium Backup folder to your external SD, then copy it back over after you flash.

I wasn't sure about this myself so what I did was just copy the TB folder to my computer and then copy it back to SD when I needed it. Maybe not the preferred method but it works.

Why?
The app itself recommends AUTO, Direct, and says that AUTO, Indirect is (If you have problems).

Under preferences change the backup folder to /SD/backup (for 2.1) /SD_external/backup (for leaked froyo). Make sure to look in that folder when restoring backups after a new flash.

It works with AUTO Direct as well? So can you provide more information? Don't put out false information. Some people take a lot of what is posted as completely accurate.

False information? GTFO. Many people posted that batch restore "freezes" for them. Mine used to also, every time. Then I went to a titanium forum, found out to switch to indirect, and have NEVER had a problem since.
You don't wanna use it, don't. But don't accuse me of putting out wrong info .....

I didn't accuse you. "Cause it works" isn't an ideal explanation. So what you're saying is. "hit the menu button and go to preferences. Scroll all the way down to "app processing mode" and switch to "Auto, indirect" ...if you are experiencing freeze issues." He asked a simple question, why post a useless/snarky reply to him?

Looking back thru this thread, i see that i may not have explained WHY i posted this, so i will. As i said in the quote above, I searched a while to get ANY tibu support. That tip was THE MOST RECOMMENDED for problems, and it worked for me, so I thought I'd try to help others by posting. I apologize for not explaining further.
As far as being a little short in the last replies, i did not like being accused of posting false info.....
I do apologize for saying it was false. Just bad wording on my part, and could have been said more... politely.
Also, being pretty new to Android. It actually took quite some time to find out some the TiBu information you posted.
Thanks for the tip!

I was pulling my hair out for a whole day searching for good support for titanium, and FINALLY found that 1 tip, and found it worked EVERY time for me on batch restore. So i just wanted to help others by posting it, and felt offended by the wording.
Let's say "no harm, no foul" =)
And I'm glad if the tip benefits you!!! =))

It's something you'll see in the list of system items you can back up in Titanium Backup. Basically, scroll down the list of things you can back up, and anytime you see the Titanium Backup logo next to a system-type item (it'll usually be green) that's some system settings thing you can backup to later restore. It won't be an app, just some settings. I don't know if the Contacts 2.2 will show up for a 2.1 OS. Can't test that myself at this point.

Hey, thanks for the post, but question since you brought it up here and I was going to start another thread but you seem pretty knowledgeable about this...
When you install a new ROM or backup and restoring apps, is using TB really "clean"? I am so used to Windows crapola, that someone told me it is "cleaner" to just reinstall all your apps instead of risking some "crap" getting transferred over through TB's process.
I understand to not backup and restore system stuff now, but what if u do apps only, which is really the better, cleaner way to install in a new ROM?
Thanks.

i guess if you want the "cleanest" possible way, you should just reinstall the apps, but honestly i've never had a problem restoring with tibu (well that's not entirely true, but that was due more to user error )
if you do have a problem with a restored app you can always uninstall and reinstall from the market.
but everybody has their own voodoo rituals, so just find what works for you and makes you happy.:highfive:

Need help: Attempting to restore DLNA/System Service after Uninstalling

Prior to rooting, I reformatted my phone and afterwards I backed up all system apps and bloatware with Titanium Backup Pro. I then uninstalled all bloatware that I knew was safe to uninstall. No problems whatsoever.
However, just to be on the safe side, I decided that I'm going to restore all uninstalled apps, unroot, reset, reroot, and use Pete's script bloatware remover/renamer.
All bloatware has been reinstalled successfully except for DLNA. Whenever I try to restore DLNA or DLNA System Service 1.0, Titanium Backup simply stays on "Restoring App+Data" forever, unless I reboot the phone. I have tried reinstalling DLNA first then I tried reinstalling DLNA System Service first. To no avail. It just gets stuck on "Restoring App+Data."
Any ideas?
Hmm, strange...same thing is now happening with Flickr Authenticator. Perhaps TI is bugging out now. I just don't get it. Really hope to hear some input soon.
i restore all removed apps with this: www.psouza4.com/Droid3
once U download unzip n place in a subfolder named restore
I had a similar thing happen to me when using Titanium, but with different apps. I'm not sure what causes the bug, nor am I certain about how to fix it. It's part of why people have been recommending that we freeze apps as opposed to backing them up (with Titanium) and then deleting them.
However, you can get the apps back by going into the system dump and copying the necessary files back into /system/app. You can find the system dump here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1164736
Just take the DLNA and DlnaSystemService apks and odex files, place them on your SD card, and then copy them over to /system/app using whichever method you prefer (Root Explorer, ADB, etc). Hope this helps

I don't think Psouza's Script can restore apps that are uninstalled. Only if they are renamed or frozen by TI. Please someone chime in and correct me if I'm mistaken.

That's fantastic, thank you my friend.
You are wrong.
When I was updating from 5.5.959 to 5.6.890, one of my apps was gone. Deleted. Idk how, but I searched my system for 10 minutes, it was called Fota.apk
I used psouza4s tools (he helped me) and restored the missing app, and then I got to update to 5.6.890

[Q] Contacts process force close after removing some bloatware

Would really appreciate some help.
Removed some bloatware via Titanium Backup, and of course, I got trigger happy.
process com.motorola.contacts (Contacts force closes)
process com.motorola.conversations (text messaging force closes)
So I have Root Explorer and got a hold of a system dump for Bionic.
I started by moving YahooContacts.apk (one of the apps I guess I shouldn't have uninstalled) back to the /system/app folder...but it doesn't show up anywhere as an installed app (just that the .apk was moved). If I try to actually select the .apk and try to install it says "Application did not Install" but the .apk IS moved.
Processes still don't work after moving.
I would appreciate any help, at this point I can't text or place calls. Thanks in advance, this forum helped me with the entire root process.
You cannot freeze/remove ANY of the other authenticator apps, it will cause contacts to freeze. I ran into that on the Droid 3.
First off there is no need to delete/remove, Freezing them accomplishes the same thing but most importantly it allows you to reverse what you have broken by Defrosting it. Do yourself a favor stop deleting and start freezing. If 16GB is not enough internal storage for you then you might consider an external HD from Seagate!!!!!!! LOL
I realize I made a big mistake. That's totally on me But it's in the past
Do I have any options to get this working again? I am definitely going to freeze apps in the future.
If I did delete an authenticator process, is there any way I can get those back? Would they be available through a system dump?
I believe that you need to make sure the permissions are correct after reinstalling an apk to the system/app folder. I've never done this, so I'll let you do the research. I've heard you can use root explorer to do this or a script with terminal emulator. Sorry I can't help more
I have the exact same problem, and am attempting to troubleshoot this issue on a different forum, however I am not allowed to post links but I'll try and keep you updated.
Edit: It's not a problem with permissions, I've made sure that they're correct with root explorer. It seems to be a Bionic-specific issue. I might just return it at this rate.
Thankfully, there's an unroot to use. I think im in the same boat. re-added all the yahoo related .apk and .odex and set permissions/owner, still nothing. Unroot and hope the Verizon dude is in a good mood!
Except now ADB is throwing "ERROR: ADB could not be granted root access" when trying to unroot
excellent.
Someone in the thread I was talking about had some success, its on droidforums dot net, droid bionic forum, bionic support, HELP! accidentally deleted IMSCServer from Droid Bionic thread. Maybe you can try something I haven't.
just do a factory reset thats what i had to do as I had the same problem.
I tried that, it didn't work... Did you actually get your system apps back? Did you do it through settings or the recovery menu?
i froze my bloat thats prob the difference and it was yahoo that caused the problem for me...

It really begs the question why anything with Yahoo is required by the system. Furthermore, why did they make it so frustratingly hard to reinstall system apps on the Bionic? Really disappointed in Motorola for this.
Here is the fix for Contacts, restore these files and set correct permission, reboot and presto Contacts fixed
That did it.. I have been looking for the YAHOO Contacts.apk file for 3 days with a bloody wortheless phone that I spent 300 shells on!
BTW I agree with Glimmerman, WHY DID YAHOO get involved in contacts? Talk about a sneaky way in integrate them.

Sorry if I'm newbtastic here but what do I do with these APKs and odex. I tried installing with ES explorer but it would not install. Am I supposed to move these files somewheres? /system/app then try install ? Thanks
answered my own question. I WAS newbtastic afterall. LOL. Thanks anyways. This did it. Dang Yahoo!
lol yep my girlfriend did this yesterday fortunately i have a bionic too so i just pulled the files from my phone and pushed to hers.
damn you yahoo.
also, apparently go contacts EX will 'fix' the problem (you must use their app however)

[Q] Can't reinstall missing apps

I didn't found awswer to this anywere so here it goes.
A couple of weeks ago i was playing cut the rope, then the phone frezze reboted itself and half of my apps had disapeared (market, gmapps, gmail, file expert, youtube, zdbox, launcher pro, etc) but others like google sky, titanium backup, some games, mixzing stayed there.
1st of all i can't understand the logic behind this but thats not why i am here but if someone explains it i would be greatful.
Then i restored some with titanium backup and the market app i had to install the apk with appinstaller because i couldn't with titanium.
Now my problem is when i try to install file expert and other that i didn't had a backup, because when i try to install them throught market i get an error saying that its not possible to install the app in the predefined directory or something like that. The error message is in Portuguese so i'm translating the best i can.
I'm also afraid that these apps are occupying space even though they don't appear anywhere on the phone.
So can anyone please explain what is going on and how i fix this?
My phone is rooted, obviously and i don't remember the name of the rom since its a vanilla rom very similar to the original one.
Thx in advance

I also had a problem similar, which was related to the calendar storage. I thought I can just download it from PlayStore, but no, that was a integral part of the system. I ended up getting that file from some other phone but with same Android version.

Oh, are you talking about calendar storage? I'll see if I can get that this afternoon.
Edit: Actually, this is not correct. I see that the structure is different now. Is this because the ART instead of being dalvik?

Yeah I had that problem. Titanium backup was not restoring it either. It was just get stuck at 0 percent when restoring.
I ended up just restoring the whole system with Odin and re-rooting and then not being an idiot.
