Problem with 720p .mkv playback - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting
When I first got my Cappy it could play 720p .mkv no problem. Then after I flashed a few times, it wouldn't play the video, just the sound. I figured in the newer roms that samsung had lowered the bitrate allowed. A couple days ago I flashed the I9000 2.1 kernel, and then Tayutama's rom in the I9000 section.
720p .mkv played flawlessly. It was kinda glitchy for me so I flashed to Cognition. (which is awesome btw) It'll play .mkv on lower resolution no problem.
It'll also play .avi, and flac too.
Why won't my Cappy play 720p .mkv?
Edit: Mod, please move this to Q&A if it's not deemed a development question.
Bump from a guy with the same issue. I'm on JF6 though. :/ Perhaps we have stumbled upon matroska files that contain audio tracks the captivate has codecs for, but not the video tracks? I'm not sure if this is how this would work. Can you inspect your mkv container for the format of audio and video tracks in it? I'll check mine when I get off work. Maybe there's a common combination that doesn't play nice with the captivate.
Sounds good. It'll take me a minute, I have to re-download the files I was trying to play.
Edit: I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700644
Nice find. It looks like people in that thread were not having trouble with AVC up to level 4 even, so I'm still at loss as to why i get sound, but no video. ?? Here's the info on the file I was trying to play. It's the only mkv I've ever tried on my phone, so I'll keep experimenting.

With that MediaInfo on that matroska file, I would definitely try to re-encode the video. If you change the resolution to be 800x480, you can significantly drop the bitrate. I bet you could even still use high H.264 levels that use CABAC and such and it would play without a problem.
But before you do a full encode, just encode segments, like a 30 second sample, and see what results you get.
Also it might be worth trying to find a media player that uses lavf for decoding.
I know the video track is pretty overkill, but in other threads there are plenty of people playing higher bitrates AVC without issue it seems. And I'm not having stuttering or sync issues. It's just a black screen with audio working fine.
Lots of flags thrown up at 6 channel AC-3 audio however. I find it hard to wrap my brain around why the audio would cause the video not to work though ??
It would be nice if some dev made a codec pack for the stock Android player. Still downloading my mkv...
Here's my MediaInfo. It might very well be the 6 channel audio causing a glitch. I'm looking for a program that will demux, let me re-encode the audio to 5 channel @ 41khz. I'm going to work soon, if there's results, I'll post them tomorrow.

My multichannel AC-3 theory seems to be debunked. Found a few people running it with no issues.
New theory: Header Removal Compression. Seems there are players out there that don't play nice with this matroska spec, which is built in as enabled on some muxing and encoding software. Googling around shows a handful of media player and media software that won't work with it. Anyone know how to tell if an mkv was built with header compression enabled?
I'll try making an mkv with it turned on and one with it turned off and see what happens.
Looks like our files were ripped very similar. I won't give up hope on the 6 ch ac-3 idea til i see what you find out.
Sorry I haven't replied to this thread. My wife is having health issues. I should be back on track in a couple days.
I have a similar problem
When using rock player
This file play in normal mode but very crapilly but in system mode it is black

So last night I tried to play the latest episode of Dexter (720p) in the stock player. I was using the Cognition ROM v2.1.4. It didn't play the video, just the audio. When I got off work I flashed to Tayutama's i9000-GT ROM. I played the same file in the stock player, and it played great, no stuttering, audio was perfect and in sync. There's something different in the JM8 euro ROM, (Tayutama's base for his ROM) that the JH7 OTA based Cognition ROM doesn't. Maybe updated codecs? Everything I have thrown at this ROM (media-wise) plays great! Here's the media specs on the file I was playing:

[bug report] MX Player: sound level jumps when hardware buttons used on my Meizu M2
On my smartphone when a video file is played and i use hardware buttons (or swipe the screen up or down) to change the sound level, i get random changes in sound volume (usually it unexpectedly changes in steps from very low to very high and back). Which is very annoying. Please check out the video i made (links are at the end of the post). At the end of the video you can see that the only way to correctly set the volume level is to use an onscreen bar. I can not reproduce this bug 100% of time, but it's present almost all the time. Please feel free to ask me for further information. Root for P8+ ( MT6580M )??
Meal, I ordered a second phone from China (wish.com), where I would like to play around with Android a bit. As far as everything goes, but that bothers me enormously, as soon as the phone completes the wireless connection and rebuilds (be it by manually de-activating the Wi-Fi function or by a reboot, etc.) is the MAC address every time edited! It has not been rooted and nothing has changed on the system! The annoying thing is, in the FRITZ! Box, I have the Mac filter in it, since some kiddies live in the neighborhood and have often asked for my wireless password, since they allegedly have no Internet at home. Hence the MAC filter. But that is useless, if the MAC address of the mobile phone changes! Does anyone know a solution to the problem or knows where the error lies? Have already queried a system update, but no newer version was found. As I said, it is absolutely in the original state and no root etc. !!!! / edit Cell Phone is this: https://www.wish.com/c/58afac58a7d7bf5bbdb10f2a In the appendix still the information, which I could
