Hi,
Is there a way to edit registry like in this tutorial http://mingersoft.com/blog/2010/09/samsung-galaxy-s-reclaim-the-missing-three-button-modes/ to downgrade from JPH to JM1? I don't have 3 buttons combo and I can't root the phone.
I am new to this but I dont think so through Kies, I think you will have to use Odin, download the JM1 files from www[dot]samfirmware[dot]com and adb to get in to download mode. It could be dangerous as you don't have the 3 buttons combo, but I did it and it worked first time, but do research first, and take your time.
Seams this phone is very easy to brick, un-like my HTC Desire, so be careful, the official Froyo is out soon, so it may be better to wait to see what happens with that?

I prefer the Kies method because I tried to install the 3 buttons combo fix described in this tutorial but It didn't succeed. Anyway, I was able exiting from download mode and nothing was changed to the phone. I think that Kies is not forcing flashing something that isn't compatible like Odin and I'm not risking to brick the phone (may'be I'm wrong).
PS: I've read that Samsung people claim that recovery and download mode aren't supposed to be used by customers. False, because after the unsuccessful flash, Kies asked me to put phone in download (or recovery, I don't remember well) mode because the firmware must be recovered. Obviously I've ignored that because the phone was ok.
I did the Kies to JPH, the day after, the 3 buttons combo came out! so used Odin to go back to JM1 then did this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201
I have an unlocked & unbranded phone.
It was all very risky, but was ready to return phone, as I've only had it 7 days in the UK, but it all worked for me, but would not want to recommend this, I've got a fair bit of experience in flashing phones, or I could just be a bit stupid, and went for it.
There seams to be lots of different stories as to why the 3 buttons combo is missing, its just stupid, what ever the reason as it will cost Samsung more in repairs, they must know the Android community likes to do a little hacking here and there!
What ever you do, I hope all goes well!

I don't know how to go back to JM1 using Odin. Every tutorial says I need root at least. Or having 3 buttons combo enabled.
The way I did it?

This could be wrong, anyone with more experience than me please say if it is!!
To get into download mode:
What you need is the Android SDK, install then using the Command Prompt and type "adb reboot download" this will reboot the phone in download mode.
then look here www/samfirmware/com for I9000XWJM1 # and Galaxy S / .PIT File: DOWNLOAD. (512) and the Odin program.
Pit file 512
for PDA choose CODE_I9000XXJM1.tar
for PHONE choose MODEM_I9000XXJM1.tar
for CSC choose CSC_I9000OXAJM1.tar
I did not have repartition clicked the next two were, and I checked Phone Bootloader update.
I had Odin setup with all the right files and settings, then used the "adb reboot download" the phone went into download mode, and then drivers were auto installed and Odin found the phone on com7, I held my breath and went for it.
But, I would do lots of your own research through this site, I could have just been lucky? and if you have even a little doubt, don't do it and wait for Kies and the official froyo.
Hope this helps a bit!

Ok, I will give it a try. But, can you gave me a link to all this files? I am really confused by now, reading dozens of threads and I want to be sure I will use the same files you used.
Hi
here for the SDK
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
and here
www.samfirmware.com
for the firmware/Odin/and pit files
I used:
I9000XWJM1 # (this has the CODE/MODEM/CSC .tar's in a zip file, password needed but on the web page)
Galaxy S / .PIT File: DOWNLOAD. (512)
Odin 1.3
this was helpful, but not a guide to this:
http://www.techlivez.com/2010/07/how-to-upgrade-galaxy-s-to-android-2-2-tutorial/
Thats about the most info I can give you, but I will say (not to be nasty) but I hold no responsibility for a bricked phone, it is easy to do, but appears even easer to brick! the new froyo may be out on the 23 of this month, so maybe wait till then to see if samsung has fixed all the problems, I'm sure you would kick yourself if you bricked it a few day before an update that fixed the problem.
Related
I already read all kinds of guides to unbrick the Galaxy S but none of them worked.
First, the patient:
Samsung Galaxy S International Version, factory free. Froyo 2.2.1 (I don't know if it is related with this problem, but 2 or 3 weeks ago I updated from Froyo 2.2 to 2.2.1)
Now the symptoms:
Two days ago, several settings changed to default, and even though it looked weird I didn't worry.
Yesterday, when I went into the Android Market web, a message appeared, saying that I didn't have any phone registered in my account. I thought it was a phone problem (and boy, it was!) so I restarted it. It didn't. It shows the Samsung logo with the model, then the Galaxy S animation and that's it! a minute later the screen goes black and vibrates randomly, every 2 minutes or so.
The 'treatment':
I already had a problem like this in the past, but then it was really my fault. After desperately looking for the solution, I managed to do a hard reset by using the 'adb reboot recovery' command, because the 3 button combo didn't work. This time I used the combo, just in case, and it worked! but before showing me the recovery options some weird message about installing some csc stuff appeared. When the recovery menu appeared, I thought that the phone was OK, so I rebooted it without doing anything else (I should have done the factory reset, right!? but I didn't want to lose anything :S). Big mistake: the problem continues, and now the 3 button combo doesn't work!
The 'adb reboot recovery' command doesn't work either. When I use it, this message appears:
* daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
* daemon started successfully *
error: device not found
I have already done *almost* everything I found in the forums. The only thing I haven't tried is the USB jig method.
I should mention that I've never used Odin, or downloaded a custom ROM or anything like that. When I had Froyo 2.2 I rooted the phone but with the update it was gone. And that's it! no lagfixes, no custom ROMs, no nothing!
Can somebody help me?
PD: Sorry for my English, I am Peruvian .
I suggest that you flash back to stock Froyo 2.2 via Odin with pit 512 and repartition checked .

Had a similar problem with mine, went from 2.1 to 2.2 on a factory unlocked phone and wound up in the same position you are in, first the pics in gallery started doubling up, then problem with market. 3 button combo no longer worked. Was pretty new to xda and sgs so didn't try adb. What I did do was bring it to my local vodafone shop, and even though it wasn't bought from them, they sent it off. Got it back within 4 days, free of charge, and the maintenance report stated that they had replaced a faulty display module, and upgraded it to 2.2.1, which wasn't available here at the time. (Doesn't make sense to me, but it must have been a hardware fail of some sort) but it got fixed, fast and for free.

Yes it works, I used it. Now I have stashed my home made electric component at a very safe place as I know while working with hacks I am going to need it again.
You literally don't need much electronic skills. What you need is a Micro USB cable (buy the cheapest one that u can find if u have to buy).
Buy a 301K resistor (if not available then get as many to bring total to 301k, I bought 3 300K and 1 1K to make a total to 301K).
There are tutorials with pictures on this site, search and u will find them.
One last thing don't worry at all up to this moment your phone is fine. Once you have your JIG ready, post a message or I am sure some one will guide you through or PM me I most certainly will as I know exactly how frustrated you might be right now.
Cheers
Try to go to download mode (volume down+home+power) if you can do that, send me a private message and i will explain you about odin.
Something more: what is USB jig?

A friend of mine bought this phone for me in Spain and sent it to me, and here in Peru only Movistar has this kind of phones. I'll take it to them, but something tells me that their won't be as good as Vodafone's.

Thankfully, the only thing I am sure is that my phone is fine... It's very hard for a Galaxy S to completely go FUBAR (unbrickable, I heard). But I'm really frustrated, not only with this problem, but with the RFS lag. I watch some friends' android phones (LG Optimus One, for example) go really smoothly while mine sometimes goes choppy, and it makes me envious Actually, the first time I f*cked with my phone was when I tried to use OCLF. The only thing left was to resign myself.
I expect to make my jig tomorrow, even though I have a very unsteady hand

I tried to get the phone in download mode and recovery mode with the 3 button combo, and nothing happened. As I wrote before, I could get the phone in recovery mode once, but now I can't. I should have done the hard reset then, damn it!
And about Odin, I heard that I can brick my phone with it if I do something wrong, so I never used it (I don't want an expensive paperweight ).
About your question, a USB jig is a 'device' (so to speak) that one can manually make with a mini USB connector and a 301k resistor, as you can see in a previous comment. It's supposed to make the SGS go into download mode when you connect it to the phone.
Acerca de escribir las cosas en ingles, pues creo que asi nos entiende mas gente, jejeje.
PD: Is it true that flashing a ROM, even a stock one (stock froyo, for example), voids the warranty?

Yes it should as I had the similar issue, Get the JIG working (when JIG works, ur phone will be in download mode) then using odin load the stock rom on your phone, first time after the load of ROM it will take several minutes to reboot so dont panic.
If you dont want to loose much of your data then make sure you DON'T click on repartition check box.
Send me a pm once u have jig working

Tonight I'm going to try the jig. Now, I remember the USB debugging isn't enabled. It isn't a problem, is it?
nope. Do follow the instructions (you should be able to find that on xda dev site) on how to use JIG to get into download mode though.
OK I managed to get it into download mode. Now what?
flash a 3 file firmware, with 512 pit and re-partition
then flash this on top http://sourceforge.net/projects/teamhacksung/files/galaxys/GT-I9000_FROYO_FULL_PDA.tar/download
boot into recovery and do a factory reset.
then move onto what ever rom you want
I think your best bet would be trying to flash using EZBase to 2.2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991792&highlight=ezbase
Very user friendly instructions, meant for recovery purposes. After we get the phone booting and working again we can worry about trying a new ROM or Gingerbread.
I will continue the story where I left it.
I took the phone to customer service, and they managed to install an incorrect ROM, (my phone is I9000, they put a ROM for the I9000B) and they send it back to me, saying that my phone couldn't boot, so it should be a BIOS error. At least it goes into download mode. I want to flash stock Froyo 2.2 or 2.2.1. I have no idea how to do it, so please be very simple in your responses :$
PD: Once I get my phone working I'd like to try some other ROMs, I am really tired of the lag.

What are the advantages of repartition?
re partitioning, repartitions the file system, along with flashing a new ROM with all 3 files, this restores the phone to a 'new like' state, as if it was out the box.
its also the best way to unbrick devices too !! i re-partition mine every couple of weeks. but i am a constant flasher
I have tried installing EA24 stock (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133053) but still Freeze when booting. The error message shown on the picture. I am clueless and need your help.

I had a more complicated version of this. couldn't format, couldn't mount, nothing. My tab showed this, I tried flashing several different kernels/roms/cwm, everything, nothing. Actually made it worse. It got to a point where when I powered on, I only got the backlit softkeys. A few times I got a weird image I've never seen before. Something about bad or unknown upload mode (with a little droid in teh corner....should have taken a picture). And finally I would get nothing; HOWEVER, if I plugged my tab into my laptop and gave it a few seconds, ODIN would see it. I could try flashing a kernel, but it would never process, just hang at the first step so....
with the tab plugged into the laptop and ODIN showing a connection, I would hold VOL DOWN + POWER until I see it disconnect (this is evident of a power down since I have no lights to indicate that). Once it disconnects (yellow box disappears) you can let go of POWER but do NOT release VOL DOWN. It will reconnect shortly thereafter. You are now in Download mode (whether or not you actually see anything on the tablet. You can test this theory by flashing something. What fixed it for me? I downloaded firmware from samfirmware.com. Specifically I downloaded JJ7 v2.2 (full file name I used was P1000XWJJ7.rar) I think what made the difference was using all 3 files. I did not use a PIT file, I put P1000XWJJ7-REV03-ALL-CL669843.tar.md5 in the PDA box, MODEM_P1000XXJK5_REV_00_CL690077.tar.md5 for Phone, and GT-P1000-CSC-MULTI-OXXJK2.tar.md5 in CSC. I did NOT check repartition. Now, this was after I had tried several things like flashing PIT by itself, different stock kernels, full ROMs, etc.... This was the final step I took. Now I'm back to normal.
I'd be interested to see if this solves anyone else's problem. I am so thrilled that I just fixed my "bricked" tab (no power, no response, no apparent charging even) that I'm hoping my time and effort can help someone else.
Let us know what happens. I am actually scouring the forums now because I know at least 2 others were having similar problems as I and maybe this will help them as well.
BTW, I did lose EVERYTHING on the internal SD, including all my backups. Thankfully I always made backups to External
P.S. I should mention it is an AT&T (GSM) Tab.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think your version of galaxy tab is different with mine and I am not sure that it will work. I am really desparate for solution. This disaster started when the tab's battery is low and suddenly off and when it's charged and turned on it bricked
Point being, tabs are tabs. You will need to use the same procedure, but a different ROM that is designed for your tablet. Go there and find a ROM. There is a thread about unbricking your tablet, I think in the Android Development section that should have a link to samfirmware.com and may provide you with a ROM version that should work. something that may help: plug your tab into the charger at least overnight. I used the stock charger and cable and charged it for 12 hours or so. I did not get any indication that it was charging since the screen and softkeys would not respond, but it did charge.
Of course, I look back and I think you have an indicator, but still a good idea. Try it anyway. Can't make it worse, eh? Mine seemed hardbricked, but it wasn't. I was real close to taking it apart before I found something that works. I believe, IMO, what really fixed it is flashing ROM (PDA), Modem, and CSC files all at once. It could have been something else, but that was the last thing I did before it finally booted.
Go to samfirmware.com, create a free account, and sign in. Then go here (I think your tab is a P1010, correct?) http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-p1010.htm
and Download this:
1010XWKC1 ## MULTI - CSC - OXXKC1 P1WIFI 2.2.1 2011 March DOWNLOAD
(click on DOWNLOAD)
Unzip that file you just downloaded
Start ODIN
Hold VOL DOWN and plug in tab to computer
I believe 3 files should be in the .rar (you can use 7-zip to open, Google it)
the MODEM file goes in Phone.
the CSC file goes in, you guessed it, CSC
last one is PDA.
I think I just rewrote instructions that can be found in the Galaxy Tab Bible. lol. This is what I would do. It worked for me.

do a quick search of the dev thread for EA24 and you should be able to find the original SPH-P100 files. then you can find the EB28 and EF17 updates as well to get all the way to the official GB release.

thank you very much for helping me!!
can anyone help?
I have the T-Mobile version of this, but here's a guide and download files to recover your stock ROM. You can follow the entire guide if you want the Overcome ROM as well:
Guide:
http://www.teamovercome.net/p1000/?page_id=17
Downloads:
http://www.teamovercome.net/p1000/?page_id=21
Good luck!
NOTE:
Sprint modem is not listed, but you can fix that later. If you can get it to work with this guide & using the last modem file, we can go from there.

try the one on teamovercome . net I have soft bricked mine but it worked after i followed their instructions there..
Has anyone EVER confirmed that overcome work for non GSM tab, for unbricking and CwM functions?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA
I have done hours of researching and this isn't my first time i bricked a phone so I kind off have some experince fixing the phone but this seems harder than before.
I first tired to flash a kernel through odin on my captivate because i wanted to try out cyanogen mod but somehow the kernel had failed on me. When i tried to restart my phone, I got the phone---!---pc logo.
So i did some research on how to get the phone out of the soft brick. First thing I did was trying to get into recovery mode with the 3 buttons, but didnt work out. After that I tried to get into download mode and it worked. My first thought was too use odin and reflash, and that is what i did. Now the problem is, I had put the correct pit file and stock rom, because I had reflashed using these two same files before, but the thing is, it gets stuck on "set partition". So I did everything from, trying on different computers to changing usb cables to using different versions of odin and finally to taking out the sim card and sd card and taking out and placing the phones battery back in. And i had everything checked too so that wasn't the problem. The following were checked: Auto Reboot, Check Re-Partition and F.Reset Time.
If anyone knows the solution can you please help me out, thank you in advance!
When you check repartition, you need to load a pit file in the pit slot/tab for Odin. You have two options.
1) Flash froyo stock(kb2), if you don't want/need Gingerbread Bootloaders. The Heimdall package from Adam Outler is an easy 1 click solution.
2) Flash KF1 if you need GB bootloaders. This will also fix ant previous 3 button combo problem you may have. Use the package with a pit file and bootloaders.
It also sounds like you may need ajig to get into download mode, but if you follow the Captivate sig link below, you should be able to find everything you need to get going.
Thank you !
Thanks a lot mrhaley30705 ! I have gone through of some guides and done more research about these two, and I was thinking of flashing kb2 on to my phone but I'm really worried if it might brick my phone, because the captivate I have is the rogers one not the ATT&T one.
I just had a few questions like, before I do the Heimdall One-Click, is it required to install the Zadig file ? because it had came up before I opened up the Heimdall One Click program. I think i had used the Heimdall One-Click before (the video that is posted on youtube) by outleradam, but the thing was, it wasn't recognizing my phone. So I'm guessing it has something to do with Zadig file, because I made sure I ran it as Administrator also so I'm kinda lost.
My other question was, the consequences, if this program would not work for me, would it hard brick my phone? I really want to make sure I go ahead with it.
And my last question is, if I were to go ahead with this, it said on the forum I would have to reset my APN settings, so would that be applying another software to the phone or can i configure that manual ?
And Thanks again for all your help !
If you want the Canadian firmware, search for TRusselo's stock threads. He has a full set of Canadian firmware.
Anytime you flash bootloaders there is a chance of hard bricking your phone, either from an interruption in communication between your phone and computer (think power outage or bad cable) or accidentally mismatching bootloaders (think the old 3 button fix on top of GB bootloaders). Just follow all of the precautions you can when flashing bootloaders.
APN editing is done manually.
Oh alright I got how put the APN information, thank you.
And oh okay, that makes more senses.
And for the Canadian firmwares, that's what I pretty much did with Odin, I took his stock firmware and tried to flash it with Odin but wasn't passing the "set partition" part like I mentioned before. I followed his instructions too. So, that's why I'm a bit confused now, because I'm guessing if Odin doesn't work then I would have to use the Kb2 link that is posted on your Sig. Do you have any suggestions maybe ?
The canadian version of the captivate will flash the US verson, it just changes your boot screen and kernel splash to an att one. I would flash the KB2, then if you absolutley had to have the canadian version, flash it.
Thank you !
Thanks a lot once again ! and I will give it a try and let you know how it goes !
Maybe try NOT checking re-partition. This sometimes can cause a problem, in fact most tutorials i have seen always say DO NOT check re-partition. It's worth a try
Hi, all.
I used Heimdall to flash the kernel as part of rooting my new phone. The messages in the terminal window looked good and I got the blue progress bar. The phone rebooted and I got a yellow warning triangle and everything freezes. I downloaded a kernel image from Samfirmware and now the phone boots without the yellow warning, but no other change. It still gets stuck. Can anyone help or is my phone bricked?
I can boot into download mode and am using a Linux PC.
At the moment, my options seem to be:
1) Use Heimdall to flash something? I have a 400meg download from Samfirmware, but don't know how to flash the files besides zImage, using Heimdall.
2) Get a USB dongle from eBay to reset the page that says I've altered the handset. This means I should be able to take it back to T-Mobile.
3) Go to a Samsung service centre and potentially pay lots of money to have the phone repaired. Anyone know how much this is (in the UK)?
Thanks,
Chris.
Actually you don't need to do that , as long as you can access download mod then your phone is fine , what you need to do is this :
- Download a stock rom including all stuff (PIT . PDA . PHONE . CSC . BOOTLOADER ) and also Odin 3 v. 1.82 Don't use another flashing software (as far as i know the one you used is still new and it may still have a lot of bugs so its better to use odin) .
You can download all the files i told you to on this page : http://www.androidgen.fr/tutoriel-s...id-gingerbread-2-3-6-odin-article-2110-2.html
Its in french but i don't think you will find problems finding the download links ^^
- After you get all the files place them according to the page each one at its right place in odin and make sure that "Re-Partition is checked .. and hit start
if all goes right your phone will reboot and work again
Good luck
Edit : This files are for S1 , your're asking for help about an S2 i suggest you post it in the correct section or download similar files for the S2 and follow the same steps
Thank you, zizou.
I'm sorry I posted in the wrong area, I'll try again.
Sorry I wasted your time.
Chris.
Hey guys,
In a bit of a pickle at the moment. I grabbed an S1 off a friend to try and teach myself about rooting and flashing custom ROMs and such using Odin. With the final intent getting it to run ICS. Not a very hard challenge, but evidently it is for me.
I'll explain what I did, and if you can help without investing too much of your time I would be very grateful.
When I got it, it was running 2.3.3, all the tutorials I read told me to update it to 2.3.6 before doing anything more. I managed to root the phone easy enough, no issues there. But when I tried to put 2.3.6 on via Mobile Odin, (which I used to flash my S2 to ICS, long story) it had seemed to freeze on 'flashing flash kernel' for a good 15 or so minutes.
Being the daft monkey that I am, I exited the program...by removing the battery (don't judge me please). When I went to turn it on, it wouldn't load past the "Samsung Galaxy S" screen.
It goes into Download mode fine, and I've tried to flash an abundance of different Gingerbread ROMs onto the phone and Odin has just been getting stuck on the "setup connection" every time I've tried to flash.
I have tried using different USB ports which is readily suggested by most people and seems to work, using my laptop instead, different cords as well. No luck. Nothing happens when I press volume UP + home + lock like it used to, so I can't even factory reset or anything =\
I did find somewhere that suggested adding a PIT file to Odin and selecting repartition but every one yells at each other when 'repartition' gets mentioned, lol.
I hope this is in the right place, please bare with me if I used any wrong terminologies, I am relatively new to this.
Has anyone got some suggestions that may help me with my problem? =\
Thank you!
Taylor
sigh...here's my recovery kit, unzip, read .txt file, proceed

No problems, was teasing ya! You will end up with root and custom recovery, if you then go to slim website and read and follow installation instructions you will then have lush ics
