HTC shift like tablets? - Off-topic

the HTC shift is a superb idea in my opinion.
A tablet with a proper OS. I still see no point in the ipad/galexytab.
But I dont like the resistive screen idea, and its bum ugly!
Are there any other tablet PC's out there like it? With fold away keyboards?

theres the Archos series.. some have their "own" OS ans some Android, Windows 7 Starter.. although the OS have been succesfully changed on all of the tablets... they're prettu nice, and cheap compared to the iPad or the Galaxy S tab..
xx

wow ! You learn new things every day I never knew HTC did a tablet , went on their website and they doo Maybe have a look at archos i think they do some windows tablets And tbh your right im bored of having crappy ios on my £500 tablet Apple should put mac on it, its powerful enough, supports keyboard and mouse, why not

Personally, at the moment I would just buy a laptop with a rotating touch screen to use as a tablet, and have win 7 ultimate running on it. Still would be a whole lot cheaper then any tablets, and can be used with as laptop too... That being said, I do like the idea of an Android Tablet - But I do not know for what purpose it would be used, apart from browsing XDA! But then I have not bothered to check to much about if a phone would be able to share the memory card out to android and it be recognised as removable storage, as then you would be able to download roms on a tablet to flash on your phone...
I spend a lot of time trying to justify to myself the urge to buy a galaxy tab / some form of rockchip tablet - but so far I can always find more cons! its a shame really! More of a shame is I am really thinking of going Win Phone 7!
But back on topic I have seen a few before, But I can't remember there names, I'll check on my lunch to see what my favourites have in store.

I just sold my laptop last month for a great price and now I'm playing the waiting game until I can get my HP Touchsmart TM2 convertible tablet. I'm dying for an update on a release date, but I'm getting nothing. There is one out already, but it's got the old dual-core. I'm waiting for this baby...
http://www.amazon.com/TouchSmart-tm2-2050us-12-1-Inch-Riptide-Argento/dp/B003KN3IZI
The Fujitsu and Toshiba models seem to be a bit too expensive. Anyone else have any recommendations? I need a real keyboard.
Otherwise, discuss tablet PCs!
I'm completely confizzled.... is this to talk about your dilemma or tablet PC's?

I just started the conversation with my waiting dilemma
I like the Asus Eee touch pad (4thQ), EP121 is the 12" model & think tehy will have a 10" as well.

I saw a video of the performance and it was a little buggy. Hopefully they will fix that before release...
Taking a look at the specs, they are a bit meh here. I won't lie
I have a dell xt2 and I am itching to find something better for tablet pc options especially because I travel in and out of LA and Chicago in summer and winter (so the sun is a big issue)
I complain and moan and groan about the dell xt2 for a variety of reasons; mostly its dell using old parts (core 2 dual processor and a 5400 rpm hd where the previous model had a 7200 rpm). Dell ram is an arm and a leg, and SSD is so ridiculously priced its not even funny. Dell tech support is full of morons with their head caught so far up their proverbial anus they assume issues are normal.
And despite all of the problems I have with the dell xt2, I think about the tablet pcs now and I realize this is the best I can get for the type of person I am. I'm a clinical psychology student, so a capacitive touch screen is very important. Pressure sensitivity would help in adobe like programs, but it is not necessary. I like having the ability to use my finger to size and resize because I read my ebooks. I can run mac osx, windows, and ubuntu, and I look for further customization granted and nothing can be found. But I realize for now this is the best tablet for me.
I don't need a tablet that can pop off at the top separating keyboard from screen, I need a higher gpu processor so I can render things a bit faster granted. All in all the tablet pc market is a waiting game. The i7 by lenovo is a joke (which is shocking). Maybe hp would be better with a capacitive touch screen and built with thin and portability in mind
edit
I just saw the hp elitebook 2740p
and I am impressed a bit
i7 2.6 ghz
8 gig ram
250 gig hd
2 mp webcam
lightweight like the dell xt
multitouch
However, the bad part is the pricetag is almost 3000 dollars psh no way I'm doing that mess - at least not until I get some cash and sell my dell xt2
Perhaps the only issue I easily see with the tablet is that where is the hp custom suite??? its like nonexistent which is a huge negative especially if its marketed as both a consumer and business tablet. I mean the hp touchsmart theme can be installed but that's not the point. Que sera sera
Well, the HP Touchsmart is supposed to be coming out with an i5. Given that it will be the same form factor for the most part, you can max at 8GB of RAM on 64-bit and 500+GB HD. That should only be $1200-$1350.

wayyyyy too expensive for the features...that's double the price of what HP is expected to have ready in less than 30 days
If it is soley about price Thinkpads are not usualy the way to go, but IMO they are worth every penny. With it you get the best keyboard, the best pointing device (trackpoint/nipple > mouse > touchpad), the best build quality, and with X200 T, the best tablet computer.
If you already have a laptop and are just looking for an auxillory tablet, then something else is in order. But if you want a laptop and a tablet, or just something with the convience of a tablet that still has the full power and utility of a laptop, the X200 T is hard to beat. It is the only tablet which I would consider a "laptop replacement" (it's a laptop in disguise); to me the higher price and extra 1.5 pounds are made up for by this fact.
I do wish Lenovo would shove more powerful hardware into their machines, especily on the GPU side. And honestly one of the biggest draws for me and many other Thinkpad fans is the trackpoint/nipple. Once you get used to it, you can never go back to using a touchpad, and at times it is even difficult to use a regular mouse. I know Dell puts something similar on their business laptops but it is a far ineferior implamentation to the Thinkpads'.
HP Slate looks alright
and it's the normal smartphone price about £350.00 and has a 1.3 Ghz processor!
not to big as well because that was one of apples failure along with the oth half a million because if you want to type with both hand you have to put the flippn' thing down.
wanna get my self a slate
Thanks

I agree with you on the build quality. From what I have seen, Lenovo seems to dominate that market, but I just cannot agree with you with the trackport/nipple. I've logged quite a bit of time with Lenovos and IBMs and I just don't get why they still make that thing. I upgrade my mouse every year and I just can't have anything else. Well, maybe a stylus!
But what I was really looking for is a netbook with touch capabilities that can convert into a slate. I want a real keyboard and I want specs that beat the XPS M140 (Intel M 1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HD) and I want to be ready for touch software coming out later this year. I didn't want to spend more than $1000 either. It seems that the HP Touchsmart is the best (and only) one so far.
IdeaPad S10-3t is garbage. EeePC T101mt is garbage. the S10 blade gets expensive when you want to upgrade to something decent. And the HP Touchsmart Tm2 seems to be perfect, just needs an optical drive.
I have got an hp pavillion tx2650eg which is very fine with its touchscreen. The touch input isn't that good, but the input with the inductive pen is wonderful

I read a while back that Dell was investing in convertible tablets, but I haven't seen anything yet. I'd trust purchasing Dell, but they just don't have anything cost-worthy.
Also, it's always good getting jobs early in the degree process and then working your way up. I apparently make more now in my bachelor's position than others trying to get jobs with their master's degree. If only that degree would finally come in the mail.

Just think it would be fun to mess with.

How do you justify using a tablet instead of a laptop?

I mean tablets are generally more expensive, require a lame data plan, have a barely usable keyboard, and are much more limited in terms of games than say a laptop? I mean all in all I can't find a plus side as to why a tablet beats even the worst laptop I own. I just wanted to get some input as to how a tablet could be better than a laptop... my laptop is barely larger and is actually lighter than most tablets so I can't find a reason to justify buying any except the 5 inch streak (due to it also being a phone)
They're more portable; you have to remember.that tablets are made for consuming data, not inputting.
That makes them great for pretty much any leisurely activity you can think of, but they aren't made to actually do work on.
Waking up and having one in bed; going to the coffee shop and relaxing; using while wwatching tv; these are all possibly better with a tablet.
Hell I have an ipad and I use it for every one of those; I pretty much only use my computer for typing papers, downloading things, and printing documents.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
Well I guess I splurged and bought the Adamo XPS and in terms of portability I'd say they're about equal. I wake up with it next to me and dont even use my TV anymore thanks to netflix on this thing. I mean in my opinion you get all the function of both a laptop and a tablet on a good laptop... I can't think of a thing an ipad can do that my laptop cant and can think of a million things the other way around.

I've been thinking of getting a macbook air 11 inch cause it's all the portability of a tablet but can still do computing. I'm having trouble myself finding a reason to get a tablet because I have a smartphone. Just want one cause of the cool factor. Not others thinking I'm cool, but I think tablets are cool.

As always there is a golden compromise.
I was looking for a tablet like the ZTE Light or Samsung G. Tab but couldn't justify splashing out the money they cost.
Also without an extra (expensive) contract with a provider they would be useless.
Can't see much usefulness in those cheap China made Android tablets without 3G/4G connection, that's flooding the market.
So I stick with my compromise between Laptop and Tablet. A Netbook from 2009.
The Eee PC 1005HA have more power than a Android tablet and longer battery time 3-7 hours, dependent power saving or performance setting for battery power (the batteries have been used daily for two years).
Also Win7starter is a far more powerful OS than any phone-OS.

Apart from that it's a bloody awful device!
If you hold it portrait it feels top heavy like it wants to fall out of your hand, turn it through 180 and it still feels top heavy.
Apps are expensive, £6-8 for an RDP client which is free on other systems?
£5 for Angry Birds!
It takes at least 5 minutes to turn on.
I spent a day using one and within minutes realised why they just aren't selling.

How about the ASUS transformer?

Should I keep my Streak 7 Wifi? Contemplating returning...(kinda urgent)

I already have a T-Mobile G2 (with CM7 installed), and after playing around with the Streak 7 about three days (bought it for $200 at Staples)...I don't know if it was worth the purchase. I still have a little over a week to return it, and I'm highly considering it.
I tried using it both with the stock Froyo (bloatware removed) and with dj_steve's Honeycomb...but in both cases, my phone can do the same thing pretty much about as fast, and more serious uses (like gaming or web browsing) are a more convenient on my 11" laptop (Alienware M11x). Not to mention, I do intend to switch to Sprint (for unlimited data), and I'll likely be getting the SGII or Evo3D, so even if I don't have a dual-core Android device now, I will soon.
I mean, it's nice that it fits in my pocket (even if just barely), but even with the Wifi tweak for battery life, it's not as long as I'd like, and the screen quality isn't that great when in portrait mode.
Maybe I just haven't found the right uses or apps for it...
-I don't commute much, and even when I do, I can't imagine any legitimate uses when offline (since I'm not using my phone as a hotspot on the go) since I don't read much, and I prefer watching videos and playing games at home on my computer
-I'll probably be getting rid of my car soon, so using it as a GPS/media player for it won't work
-When around the house, I prefer checking email and whatnot on my computer
I'd say the only real use I'd see out of it is if I were to get a laid-back security job where I could just bring it there and play around or something, but at that point I'd probably be more inclined to get a bigger tablet (maybe with a keyboard/dock, like the Transformer) since I wouldn't be too worried about having to fit it in my pocket.
So...any opinions/suggestions? More specifically, any app recommendations (preferably for Froyo) that I should look into (not necessarily ones from the Market)? The Honeycomb ROM was a bit too buggy for me (stuff not resizing properly, freezing/rebooting with certain apps, etc), I'd rather wait for an official Honeycomb.
Its all about personal preference. Don't care for notebooks... too unwealdy. I like something that fits in my hand but isn't tiny like my phone. I also have a gaming desktop so I'm covered there. I like the pad with honeystreak 2.0 for casual surfing and gaming when I'm chillin on the couch or in the car when I'm not driving.

To be truthful, I don't have a need for the tablet either. Life was fine with my laptop. The only reason I got the Dell Streak 7, and this is my first tablet, is for casual web surfing and casual gaming. The 7 inch screen is perfect for this, the phone is too small and the 10 inch is too big for my taste.
I have found you can talk yourself into or out of anything. I have had mine 3 days and and already been on all 3 roms a couple more than once. I cant put mine down. Im a atay at home dad, own this, the 5, and an ipad and this is cool. Juat the right size. I read, watch movies, edited a document and played some fun tegra games like riptide. All for 200.00. Honestly I own 4 tablets I kept getting different ones expecting some other wonderful thing to happen but in reality. They are all the same.
I have a rooted cyanogen mod 7 nook color, a elocity a7 terga dual core,a dell streak 7, and a acer iconia a500. and you know what the high end iconia can do that the rooted nook color cant? NOTHING thats right any app you want torun or anything you want to do you can do on any android device period.
They all do the same internet, they all do the same apps, games, same face book, twitter. blah blah blah blah.
ONly differences in any of them is screen and speed. and to be honest my gloified nook color ereader turned tablet is just as fast as and terga dual core. sure i am sure you can get some extra frame rates or some other spec that in the real world no one notices to go a bit faster on a more expensive unit but who cares really.
I found the best deciding factor on tablets is size,(10 or 7) screen clarity, and battery life.
your either a 10 inch tablet person or a 7 inch one me im a 7 inch fan (lol no ego here). battery life again too alot of people make this into a big deal but as long as it runs till i go to bed who cares i just plug it in till morning and go again who needs a tablet to run for 7 days with out plugging it in anyway.
and for screen well thats all relative lets use the acer iconia and the transforer for example the transformer uses 16 million colors and a ips screen but its viewing angles suck. now the acer uses 165 thusand colors and jsut a regular screen but its viewing angles rock so is there a difference? the human eye only sees like 150k colors at one time anyway so whats the use of a 16 million color screen?
Long and short you need to be happy with what you buy. but you sound like I use to be it just kills you not to have or try everyone of them and no matter what one you get your gonna wish you had the other. I bet you go through phones like water too. my frinds are like that they cant stand to have a phone longer then a month and they are off getting another one.
But truth be told they all do the same thing really they do... the new 700 dollar droid does nothing the old first gen droid cant do it just does it faster is all so is it worth it?
Doesn't sound like a good fit for you. I say sell it on CL for what you paid. It could make someone's day. Someone who would lay a little love and appreciation on it.
if you want to unload it for $200 i'll take it off your hands. the streak 7 is why i joined, actually rejoined this forum

TABLETS: Useful gadgets or expensive toys?

I like tablets, they are beautiful, thin, light, their screens are great, people watch you with envy when you use one in a public place, etc. But I still didn´t buy one, just because I couldn´t find a place for them in my daily life. On the go I use my smartphone, and at home I use my laptop. They are not comfortable/powerful enough to substitute my laptop, and they are not light/portable enough to substitute my smartphone.
To tablet-owners: Do you find them useful or not?
If yes, in which situations?
I believe they are both!
I'd rather a smartphone than a tablet.
If I actually spent a week trying to use one as a daily driver I'd know, but from what I've read and heard, it's a expensive toy.
$1 gets you a reply
Its both imo. But if I bought one, it would be as a toy
I use it for to view school papers all the time. With the highlight feature of Repligo Reader it makes it even better. oh and I have the $149 touchpad so it's actually really cheap.
16gb touchpad here. Paid 100. I love it. It's mainly a toy but I definitely could see more use of it than just a novelty.

Well to me, I don't see the reason to buy a tablet as long as I have a smartphone even if it's a low-end one. Big screen doesn't mean anything to me!
I just got the Transformer Prime myself. It's a nice addition, but not necessary in the least bit. Kinda cool playing with ICS on it though.

I'd say it ultimately depends on the phone you have and the tablet you get.
For example, if you've got a Samsung Note and then you get a 7" Galaxy Tab it may seem a little pointless, but if you've got something with a 3" screen that's only really good for calls, texts and basic email and browsing then a tablet would seem like a godsend.
I've got a Galaxy S2 and a 7" Galaxy Tab and it's a good combination. I use the phone heavily throughout the day for all sorts of communication stuff, but then put it down at home and use the tablet instead, which is obviously better for things like browsing and typing etc..
I use mine as a substitute for my laptop at work sometimes. I mostly edit Google docs and use a note pad app. Although, at my job even my laptop isn't a good substitute either. My boss uses LimoSys for the Limo reservations and that program SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKSSSS!!!!!!! Sigh.
But in general I love my GTab 10.1

Honestly the current state of tablets and the OS they are more of an expensive toy. My main use for them had come in the form of a digital REAL BOOK and digital music stand. It saves lugging around all my music to gigs. If wasn't for this use though the tablet OS isn't very useful yet to replace my laptop yet if all I am able to use it for is a glorified e-reader.
tablet for me is more of laptop replacement because of its big screen size. and it always make me laugh to see someone using galaxy tab 7 as a phone
They are useful, but I would only buy one if you're not a gamer. Cause they do make great laptop replacements, but gaming is limited. I got one for christmas (which was an awesome gift btw), but I hardly ever use it. I always find myself running back to my laptop because im a gamer, but other than that it does all my other day to day tasks effortlessly. So I say only get it if you really don't need your laptop.
for the most part it's a toy, but ive gotten more and more productivity apps on it now to the point it is very close to a contender as a a laptop replacement
Toy... be honest how many times have you forced yourself to use a tablet or phone when a computer was right near you just because you want it to have a point.

I use mine on weekends to keep the 3 year old entertained while we get in an extra 30 minutes sleep. So to me I say its a highly useful tool.

I'm not always near a computer, so it's most definitely not a toy. It's the closest thing to a netbook that you can get, but most people would use a desktop PC over a netbook. Doesn't make that a toy though.
Besides, I've never dragged my PC into the bathroom just because I'm going to "sit down" for a while.
They have their ups and downs. I personally don't need one because I have a nice laptop and a decent phone. There is nothing that a tablet can offer me at this point.

Lol, maybe you should try it... I can't say I have either but I also don't bring a tablet into the bathroom, its not like I need google navigation to get back to the living room ;P I personally have the 64GB ipad2 please don't rage at me for buying an apple tablet, its already enough of a pain to use it sometimes, I definitely prefer Android. But the stuff that I use it for like email and internet/YouTube I could just do on my phone, its not really worth dragging around a tablet for. I already drag around my laptop so i'd rather just use that.
