ok i just got in my adapter to use on my tilt and when i plug it in with some headphone, i get nothing.. still sound comes out the speaker of the phone and not through the headphones.. do i need to be doing something to route it over or does it automatically spose to..
Which adapter did you get? It should route all sound straight to earphones just like any earphone plugin would.

its a regular adapter that i got off ebay, and i just dont get it, its not routing to the headphones
i think you might have acquired a converter that works for MOTOROLA devices...i made the same mistake initially so i guess it must be a common misconception
if you look at the mini usb part of the adapter, you will notice it is shaped like a trapezoid...point it into your eyes so you can see the little contact pins inside.
with the wide side of the trapezoid along the top and the narrow side of the trapezoid along the bottom, the "correct" adapter would have pins along the narrow side while the motorola style adapter would have pins along the wide side of the trapezoid.
PS: i'm sorry the reader may have to use a dictionary and recall their geometry lessons to interpret my post but i didn't feel like making a diagram or searching for a picture...

If you're planning on keeping the seido adapter, just be sure to Baby your usb prong brother. I was using the seido adapter for around a year and a half with mixed results as most of the time I'd have to fiddle with it to stay connected which was the Good part. Recently upon pulling out the adapter it decided to take my usb prong with it since it's so damn tight which essentially circumcised and killed my kaiser which was a very Happy ****ing day for me. You might be better off getting a set of stereo bluetooth earphones as it'd be a lot safer...
Just wondering if anyone has heard, knows of, or thinks there will/won't be a device specific car mount for these Evo Shift's?
Personally i'm hoping there will be one and soon. Something like whats out for the EVO now, but only for the shift.
I'd suppose it be a car mount that lays the phone on its side due to the USB port being on the side rather than bottom.
For now I have one of those universal mounts, but hate it. Miss having a car mount that i just drop my phone in and it holds it firm and charges it without me having to hook a cable up.
So anyone else wanting a good car mount? or heard about one coming out soon maybe?
I've been hoping for one as my last 2 phones have had them. Motorola Droid then the EVO.

With this phone's charger port being on the side (vs the bottom as on the Hero) the chances of a mount that charges as soon as you place it in there is 0.
I'm sure there is a work around that. Mount landscape then tilt vertical. Nothing too hard.
I got a cheesy $5 one by cellet from Fry's Electronics. The charger is in a weird spot though. I just put it on the mount when I'm using google maps.

This one apparently works with the charger plugged in. A couple people in the Android Central forums have it. I am waiting on it right now.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ELOOZO/ref=oss_product
Edit - sorry didn't read the bottom of your post about you having a universal but wanting one you can just set the phone in.
well, if it really comes down to it, i'll just deal with a universal mount and be happy anyway. Tho I am a little worried that with the universal mounts the clamps on the side would hit the volume buttons. but the one you linked from amazon looks like it might just work since on the side its got that little cut out. might barely miss the volume buttons.
heh, guess my other option is to switch to the EVO. But I'm liking this built in keyboard a lot. not sure if it'll be worth giving up.
Although, doing a more in-dept search online for car mounts for android phones, I found several mount options out there for the HTC Desire Z which has a side slide keyboard and the USB port is on the side and yet there's a custom fit car mount kit for it. So maybe there is hope that one will be out for the Shift after a while.
The generic suction car mount I have has sides that slide so that it avoids buttons when gripping the phone.
ProClip...duh. They'll create a holder that slides in from the side with the rails on the top and bottom. Will have a cutout for the power button and volume buttons.

Check out this one on amazon instead of the one posted earlier:
amazon
That's the one I bought for my hero but it works much better with the shift. The bottom of the holder actually goes on top of the phone so that the volume rocker fits right in the hole on the sides (unlike my stupid hero haha). And it can also be used with the sand bag to sit on the dash or suctioned to the windshield.
Mine works well
I have one and it works well, but I do have to be careful where I place it or it will hit the volume buttons.
Has anyone had any luck in finding a car dock specifically designed for the Shift? If not I'm going to get the universal dock from amazon a couple post back as long there is access to the usb and audio ports. I lost count of how many times I've had to reach over and grab my phone in order to keep it from flying on the floor after a sharp turn or quick stop. The dock may even save my life by keeping my eyes on the road instead of having to look down and over to change music or check Maps..
ProClip will have one, but they haven't given me an ETA yet.

I'm currently using a universal car mount I've gotten from Amazon and it works great.
It holds it nice and snug, the usb port is unblocked (as I use a car changer to keep the Shift charged during long drives)
Only real downside is that it covers half of the volume controls (you can still turn volume up, but the bottom portion is covered) which is no problem for me personally
Just shows how dumb the overall design is. That left side is so cluttered due to the microUSB and the bad placement of the volume buttons.
ProClip will most likley have top and bottom rails allowing the phone to slide in from the left side of the phone. Will allow for a charging cradle and possibly rotation to landscape to allow the slider to open.
That said, my Shift is getting sold. Keeping the Epic and picking up an Arrive to play with as a second phone.
I posted this awhile back on Android Central if anyone cares to have a look at what the Shift looks like in one of the Amazon universals. (Hmmm is me)
http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-evo-shift-4g/53163-car-mount-gps-2.html
I have a universal car mount. It's suppose to fit through the vents, but I broke the little flips and they went all the way back into the air tube... I'm never getting one again. I'd rather just have the phone on my seat.
I haven't had any luck with any universal mounts. I tried an ARKON one that plugged into the the cigarette lighter with a flexible arm, but the plug didn't tighten enough so the thing would flop upside down when you hit a big bump. I don't understand why a company can't come up with something that works? I think a cigarette lighter mount has a lot more promise then the vent mount crap, but thats my opinion.
I bought the Arkon mount that goes into the cigarette lighter and it works perfect for me. It is extremely adjustable in almost any direction, so you can get the desired angle rather easily. It doesn't cover the charging port and it never hit the volume keys on the side (I have a phone case). You can also adjust how firm you want it to grip your phone, with a quick release button on the side. I find that if I have it gripped firm but not too tight, I can slide my phone in and out without adjusting it each time. It holds it firmly and doesn't slide while I drive. You can also switch between landscape and portrait mode easily while it's clipped in. Hope this helps.

Picked up the HTC Vivid yesterday, came from the Galaxy SII(gave to fiance) has anyone else noticed a problem with the headphone jack in that you have the really PRESS the headphone jack in, then if you just slightly twist the connector it will tell the device you've disconnected the head phones and disables the music?
This has happened with multiple headphones and is a major downer for me as I am very active when I have my headphones in, mostly this will become a problem while riding my motorcycle to work.
How are your headphone jacks????
Mine works fine. I'd say get a replacement...

I've had my Vivid since launch and haven't noticed any issues with the headphone jack yet. You might take it back to the store, compare against the floor model, and if yours definitely has an issue then show the AT&T employee and they should swap you out for a new one.
I have a specific pair of headphones that goes in the jack very easily until the last bit, then I have to push pretty hard.
I have not experienced any disconnect when twisting the connector so far. That would seem to be a hardware problem worthy of a return.
ok, I'm slightly relieved by this, I will drop by a store on the way home to check it out. Thanks all!
yea.. mine also seems very tight when i was testing the FM radio.. luckily i never use headphones so i dont really care.
my headphone jack has problem, gonna see about a replacement
otherwise, its an awesome phone, very similar to evo3d/4g with the obvious differences.
My headphone jack is very tight. Love that factor. I use standard iPhone headsets. It seems to hold the headset in tight so as to not lose connect unless it is wanted.
Tightness with HTC earphones
I'm using the earphones that came with my HTC HD2. While testing the Vivid FM radio, I realized I was getting sound in only one earphone. I pushed on the plug and suddenly got sound in the other. I removed the earphones and re-inserted them. I could definitely tell an initial stop and then a second audible click when it went all the way in.
checked 4 different display models in 2 different stores, and had a guy go through a half dozen new phones in the box and all of them had headphone jack problems.
For what it's worth, I've discovered different headphones make the difference.
My Sennheiser canal earbuds disconnect easily if I'm not careful. My Phillips wrap-arounds are rock solid on the same phone.
Tested with my wife's Vivid and had the same results.

I have exactly the same result, have 3 headphones and one of them getting pulled out a bit easily, while other 2 works perfectly fine.
Gotta say, this is getting a little frustrating. Who's got a decent pair of canal earbuds that they like AND that don't disconnect and stop my music every time I put my phone back in my jacket pocket.
This is a little stupid really. I'm not using cheap headphones, and I don't have any problems with any other phone, my nook tablet, etc. A crap headphone jack on a phone like this is highly disappointing.
I have some house of Marley jammin buds and some Skullcandy FMJs that work fine. Only ones I have had trouble with are the blackberry ones.

Mine has the same issue. I do remember that my son's HTS came with headphones but they were the kind with the microphone and had 4 contacts on the connector instead of 3 that a regular set of headphones have. I will come home and will try my son's headphones to see if that is the reason.
Headphone jacks should be a known technology. I've used my Sennheiser headphones in a ton of devices, and never had an issue till my brand new phone.
That being said, yes, the phone has the ability to take an extended jack for microphone compatibility, so I ordered a well reviewed cheap pair of phones that happened to be on sale today for half off and include the in-line microphone. ($10 bucks, yes indeed!)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826735013
Just be sure to order today and use the promo code. I'll post once I have them how they stack up and if I still see the disconnect issue.
What I've noticed is that when you twist the headphone jack, it'll come out a little bit. The headphones with shorter jacks that are almost completely concealed in the phone will stay connected still, because it won't pop out far enough. The headphones with jacks that are slightly larger disconnect more easily, since more of it sticks out. Not really sure if that's just coincidence or not, but it's just what I've been seeing.
Have some problem here with my Shure headphones. The quick and easy fix that seem to work well for me is to use a different (short) extension cable that snaps in well to the jack...
...having said that, still sux to have paid $200 for a high-end phone and get such a crappy jack.
Count me in as someone with headset jack problems on their Vivid too...
My Sennheiser HD280's slip in and out of the jack, causing it to think it has a microphone connected (and pausing playback)
My car's aux-in cable just won't stay connected-- there's plenty of friction, but just rotating the cable alone causes it to think the headphones have vanished.
My cheapo headphones work, so long as I keep the cable perfectly still and allow no rotation/pull on the cable.
This is rather frustrating, I must admit.
I'm going to go to the ATT store tomorrow and see if their demo unit has this same issue also.
(Side note: MHL doesn't work on my phone either, but I'm not sure if that's a side effect of the way I rooted my phone)
i noticed this problem with my 3.5mm in my car. I was stumped because my sony canal earbuds were working perfectly and my gaming headset (turtle beach hpx) was working perfectly as well (the jack on this is pretty big). I went to radioshack and tried a different 3.5mm and it fit perfectly. Im guessing certain plug-ins dont work for some reason.
this might be the most rediculous question I have ever asked but is there something special about this phone's headphone input? I've tried 3 different 3.5mm sets on it and none of the plugs go in all the way. They stick out a little less than quarter of the way and sometimes have poor sound quality. Wondering if this is some kind of design flaw or if i have to take it back to the store? thx!

Guess this isn't a deal breaker for me, but can anyone recommend some headphones that go all the way and fits snug?

It isn't a design flaw -- it is a styling thing, nothing more. That portion of the plug is not (technically) necessary.
Your issue is either with your particular set of headphones, or your telephone. Using my phone to listen to music right now. The end does stick out, but the sound quality is perfect.

On a slightly related note, I've tried plugging my phone into the AUX input of my car stereo. I find that this is pretty terrible; there's all sorts of radio interference on top of the audio. Something is not properly shielded somewhere, and I think it's the phone. (Probably, now that you mention it, because the plug doesn't fit all the way into the jack...) Have no problems like this using other audio devices...
Was your phone plugged into a charger when you tried plugging it in in the car?

I noticed this too. Some 3 ring jacks (usually for microphone equipped devices) don't seem to sound right, but I haven't tested the mic at all. So far though, aux seems to work fine, and as has been said, it's just because the phone is curved. I agree, though, a bunch of the cable bit sticking out seems like it's asking for interference, but no issues for me yet.
Can someone explain to me the rationale why the headphone jack is still on the top?
When you hold the phone, the jack stick out from the top then bends down as the gravity pull down the rest of the cable. it makes no sense.
This is annoying because sometimes the cable can block the screen, I use a real headphone like audiotechnica, which has a very heavy coiled cable, the weight of the cable pulls the top side down, making the phone difficult to handle.
When you put the back into your pocket, you first have to change the orientation of the phone in your hand because you can just stick it because the headphone jacket is on the top.
This is one area iPhone gets it right.

I prefer the headphone jack on the top because I put my phone in my front pocket top side up.

Pants.
There's no right or wrong way here, both have their advantages and disadvantages. Having the headphone jack on the bottom is nice, it makes the phone easier to get out of your pocket, it means that if it's playing musing on a desk the screen orientation is already correct etc etc. But having the headphone jack on the top is good as well. I use the phone quite close to my chest sometimes (public transport) and I wouldn't want something sticking out from the bottom of it and into me. Also, having a jack on the top means that I can put the phone on a stand on my desk (like a Tylt Vu) so I can see the screen, and this stand doesn't cause any problems when using headphones because the jack is accessible.

I also put phones in my pocket top side up and its also easier and more accessible for example on my last car with had bluetooth phone calls but not bluetooth audio play so had to use aux input
other than that I think the connector being on the bottom is ugly! but thats my opinion.

So true; especially with AptX providing higher fidelity than a wired jack. I wouldn't want the jack at the bottom anyway. If you use a dock or a stand you can't use the jack at the same time. Nor would I want the USB cable and jack both on the bottom in cases where I'm using both. My N10.1-14 has it on the left side 2mm from the top which is fine. Just because Apple does it doesn't mean it's right.
I also prefer it on the top, if the cable dropping over the phone bothers you just let it fall behind the screen?
I also like it at the top. Feels better for me. Also doesn't bug me if I grab my phone wrong cause turning it around in my hands takes only a couple seconds. I never understood really what the point of having the jack at the bottom of the phone really does. Is there really and benifit?
I have had devices with the jack on both the top and the bottom, and I must say I find the ones on top to definitely be the most versatile. I can't stand the jack on the bottom. If I'm lying down on my stomach on a bed or something, listening to some music while reading, the bottom jack will be smashed against the bed. Not so great for the jack or the cord. On top? No problem. It's also better when my phone is in my pocket...when it's top-side-up, the buttons are still easily accessible to change volume or track. If I had to put my phone upside down in the pocket, I'd have to pull the phone out more just to reach the buttons. It's also more compatible with generic docks that still use auxiliary input.
If Samsung starts putting it on the bottom, I'll be forced to buy new bluetooth headphones. I really don't want to spend money on that yet.
I prefer the jack on top
I don't care about your preferences or opinions. I am only after logical reasons to why the jack is on the top.

Probably because the S-Pen, microphones and charge port take up some space. And probably because when having the jack on the top, it's easier to connect it to the main circuit board.

the most logical reason, judging by the post above, is that most of us prefer it at the top..
technically reason, could be anything... best asking samsung about that as only they would know
Think what we've discovered here is there is really no right or wrong reason, and as you can tell from various posters some prefer it on the top and some preferred on the bottom. It's all a matter of personal preference.
As to the logical reason, the one poster who mentioned the location on the motherboard and the simplicity of connections may have actually been correct. Consider the fact that the speaker and the headphone jack are both at the top on most phones, which means that from a circuit aspect, connections for sound are close to the top of the phone for most phones.
Some phones do you have the speaker at the bottom, and so I've never done any correlation research to see if those are the ones that have the headphone jacks on the bottom or not, but it would make sense that the headphone jack should be close to where the speaker is since it's just a matter of a physical disconnect of the speaker and physical connective the headphone jack.
Other logical reasons, I couldn't say I can't think of one in particular but I'm sure the engineers had their reasons.
As far as the cord is concerned, using a full blown head set such as the Audio Technica with a heavy cord in your phone will ultimately put extra strain on the headphone jack in your phone and potentially could cause it to become detached electrically from the motherboard due to that heavy pulling as you mentioned.
I might suggest that you go with either an extension cord that has a nice light cable and then plug your headphones into that extension cord, or the suggestion for Bluetooth was not all that bad. There are Bluetooth receivers that are high fidelity run by a small battery typically aa our aaa, and you can plug your headphones into that little receiver and then set your Bluetooth output on your phone and now you have completely wireless audio in your high end headphones.
Any other suggestions?
Oh and by the way, let's keep the responses light and pleasant and respectful. No need to get sarcastic or snippy.
